11. Most of my life I had lived in a Black and Latino community. Neither of my parents had made it past middle school and I was the first in my family to ever set foot on a college campus. By contrast, most of my peers came from generations of college educated family and had grown up in rich, white suburbs. Instead of sharing with others how I was feeling, I isolated myself and thought I could get through it if I just focused on studying. During the weeks leading up to my sophomore year winter break, I finally decided I would drop out. Fortunately, that wasn't the end of the story. I found strength and guidance to continue through to graduation.
Counseling(咨询) provided me a space to release and process my emotions. My counselor provided me books and other resources to understand what I was experiencing and she helped me feel empowered.
Volunteering with a campus organization that guided children in Chicago housing projects provided me a consistent reminder for why I was in college. My interactions with students who reminded me so much of my own friends back home inspired me to commit to working for access to higher education for low-income youth. I also got involved with a summer urban internship(实习生) program, where I cooperated with a group of student leaders to start a conference to dialogue about issues of race and class.
Knowledge is empowering. I read books and intentionally chose courses to learn more about topics related to immigration, race, social class and urban education. These courses and books helped me gain a much deeper understanding of my own racial experiences of oppression(压制). Most importantly, I was empowered with the knowledge I needed to work against injustice and inequality.
1.Why did the author decide to drop out in the second college year
A.He found it hard to concentrate on study.

A.Gaining knowledge from books and courses.
B.Volunteering in programs and interacting with people.

D.Starting a conference is the only way to word against injustice and inequality.
12.For Canaan Elementary's second grade in Patchogue, N. Y. , today is speech day, and right now it's Chris Palaez's turn. The 8-year-old is the joker of the class. With shining dark eyes, he seems like the kind of kid who would enjoy public speaking.
But he's nervous. "I'm here to tell you today why you should... should..." Chris trips on the "-ld'', a pronunciation difficulty for many non-native English speakers. His teacher, Thomas Whaley, is next to him, whispering support. "...Vote for...me..." Except for some stumbles, Chris is doing amazingly well. When he brings his speech to a nice conclusion, Whaley invites the rest of the class to praise him.
A son of immigrants, Chris started learning English a little over three years ago. Whaley recalls(回想起)how at the beginning of the year, when called upon to read, Chris would excuse himself to go to the bathroom.
Learning English as a second language can be a painful experience. What you need is a great teacher who lets you make mistakes. "It takes a lot for any student," Whaley explains, "especially for a student who is learning English as their new language, to feel confident enough to say, 'I don't know, but I want to know.'"
Whaley got the idea of this second-grade presidential campaign project when he asked the children one day to raise their hands if they thought they could never be a president. The answer broke his heart. Whaley says the project is about more than just learning to read and speak in public. He wants these kids to learn to boast(夸耀)about themselves.
"Boasting about yourself, and your best qualities," Whaley says, "is very difficult for a child who came into the classroom not feeling confident."
1. What made Chris nervous

12. As the coronavirus(冠状病毒) outbreak continues, many Americans are fearful of using public transportation. They are also looking for ways to get exercise without going to a gym. So, it may not be surprising that the pandemic(流行病) has led to a major increase in bicycle sales.
In the US, bicycles at big stores have sold out. And small bicycle stores cannot keep up with demand for "family-style" bicycles: the low-cost, easy-to-ride models. "The bicycle industry is seeing its biggest sales increase since the oil crisis of the 1970s," said Jay Townley, an industry expert. He compared the sale of bicycles to the rush to buy products like toilet paper at the start of the pandemic.
The rise in bicycle sales is not happening just in the US. Italy has created bicycle paths for the growing number of people who want to avoid public transportation. In London, city officials plan to ban cars from some central roads. Bike shop owners in Manila say demand is even stronger than what they see at Christmas time.
Of course, you can only buy a bicycle if you can find one. In the US, the shortages now mean it may take many months to get a bicycle. High demand is not the only reason for the shortage. Many bicycle factories were shut down to stop the spread of COVID-19. The increase in bicycle demand began in March as countries began to close down. In April, the sale of bicycles increased 200 percent in the US.
Joe Minutolo is the co-owner of Bar Harbor Bicycle Shop in Maine. He said he hoped the increased sales meant a change in the way people think about transportation. "People are having a chance to rethink things," he said. "Maybe well all learn something out of this, and something really good will happen."
1.What causes the increase in bicycle sales
A.Shortage of public transportation. B.Outbreak of the coronavirus.

11. Born in 1918, in the little town of White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, Katherine Johnson was simply attracted by numbers. As a child, she counted everything. She counted the steps to the road, the steps up to the church, the number of dishes she washed... By the time she was 10 years old, she was a high school freshman, which was truly amazing in a time when school for African-Americans normally stopped at eighth grade. To fulfil her maths potential(潜力), her father drove his family 120 miles to Institute, West Virginia, where blacks could continue high school education. Johnson's excellent performance proved her father's decision was the right one: Katherine skipped grades(跳级) to graduate from high school at 14 and from college at 18.
In 1953, after years as a teacher and later as a stay-at-home mum, she began working for NASA, which began hiring women to measure and calculate the results of wind tunnel(风洞) tests in 1935. In a time before the electronic computers, these women were called "computer". Even after NASA began using electronic computers, the astronaut John Glenn requested that Katherine should personally recheck the calculations made by the new electronic computers before his flight.
She continued to work at NASA until 1986. Her calculations proved critical to the success of the Apollo moon-landing programme and the United States' journey into space. Her story was the basis for the 2016 film Hidden Figures.

12. "Go ahead," I told Linda. "Pick up the rock, and see what's under it."
Her 4-year-old arms struggled with the rock buried in the stream bed. Her eyes got big as she examined the worms after their nest was uncovered. She watched quietly, as they walked past her foot. She gently put the rock back and said, "Are there worms under all the rocks "
This wasn't school—it was a nature-based summer camp in New York's Hudson Valley that I ran when I was 27. When I turned the kids over to their parents at the end of the day, they were tired, inspired by nature and knowledge.
Finland's "forest kindergartens" use the natural world as a jumping-off point for early academic instruction to make kids enjoy learning. Finland is following in the footsteps of other European countries including Denmark, where outdoor education has been common for many years.
In the Finnish programme, kids spend four days of a week, from 8:30 am to 6:30 pm, outside with a teacher. What has been built into the programme is quite a bit of playtime. Kids get a lot of exercise and lesson plans are freely made so teachers can use what's at hand and in season in their lessons.
While all this sounds less strict than a classroom-based kindergarten programme, the results show that these types of programmes have better results for overall physical health as well as academic performance and social development. But aren't the kids who do this coming from wealthy, educated communities—so, of course they score better on tests In fact, the greatest gains from spending time outdoors can be found in kids who are coming from less advantageous backgrounds. At a school near Atlanta, where kids spend 30 per cent of their day outside, students have improved scores more than students from any other school in their area, and most of the kids there come from poor families.
1.Why did the author ask Linda to turn over the rock
A.To help Linda be independent. B.To see if Linda had enough courage.
C.To give Linda a chance to study nature. D.To teach Linda how to protect animals.
2.What's the purpose of Finland's "forest kindergartens"

C.To show the importance of play. D.To develop kids' interest in study.
3.Compared with classroom-based kindergartens, "forest kindergartens" _____.
A.seem to be less tiring B.have no fixed lesson plans
C.set many strict rules D.have no teachers around

【综合素养】
11. Many people believe that there is one form of their language that is more correct than others. They may believe, for example, that British English is more correct than other varieties, or that written English is more correct than spoken English, or that standard spoken forms are more correct than dialect forms. Often this belief is supported by reference books about grammar, usage guides or dictionaries: If something goes against a rule in a grammar, or if the word isn't in the dictionary, it "must be wrong". Since the reference books are most often based on the observation of the standard written language, the argument is really circular: These books will naturally describe standard usage, because that is what they are for, but this does not mean that there is anything wrong with other kinds of usages that are less often described.
A better way of looking at things is to say that certain usage is "correct in its place". Standard American English is correct in America; British English is correct in Britain; spoken grammar is accepted in casual speech, and formal written grammar is employed in formal writing. So this means there is no answer to the question: "What kind of English should learners study " It depends on their purposes. For many learners, the best model is either of the two main standard varieties: British or American English. Neither of these is "better" than the other, and they are both used and understood worldwide.
People are also worried by language change. If younger people "break" the rules that older people have learnt, or use language in new ways, older people often feel disturbed: They are concerned that younger people no longer know their grammar, and that the language is going downhill. This is a needless worry: Change is natural and inevitable; it cannot be stopped, and it does not generally affect a language's efficiency as a communicative tool. A great deal of modern English grammar would have been wrong three hundred years ago, and will perhaps be wrong again three hundred years from now.

Chosen from thousands of applicants, Tianna Gonzales and Kaiya Simmons were part of a group of 100 young people who marched in the Magic Kingdom Parade and made conversation with Academy Awardwinning costume designer Ruth E.
