12. Advertising can be defined as a paid form of non-professional but encouraging, and positively favorable presentation of goods and services to a group of people by a sponsor. In the simplest words, advertising is an introduction to consumers and the general public, of services and goods.
No company can guarantee to make a profit on any product unless it advertises first. Advertising creates brand awareness in the general public and makes business more popular within the circle of potential (潜在的) buyers.
There are three types of media: print, broadcast, and direct media. The first category consists of printed information sources — newspapers and magazines, which are relatively cheap. Nearly everybody reads newspapers. Moreover, newspapers are generally local, which allows small, local businesses to advertise directly to their potential customers. But most of the ads in newspapers have no color, and are not that appealing. Instead, you find opposite ads in the second type of print medium, magazines.
For the advertiser, the greatest advantage of magazines is that they have specialized groups of readers. For example, the people who read Car and Driver are probably not the same people who read Glamour, which is a women's magazine. Therefore, advertising in a magazine allows a business to direct its ads to the people who are most interested in the product.
The second category is the broadcast media. Almost everybody listens to the radio, which is usually local. However, the radio is a background medium, and most listeners are doing something else while listening. Because radio listeners exist over many stations, a company may have to advertise at the same time on several stations to reach target audience.
Millions of dollars are spent each year on radio ads, but more millions on television advertising. Of all the media, TV, with sound, sights, and motion, is the most dramatic. How many of you, for instance, can sing the slogan for Coca-Cola That's because TV permits ads to reach large numbers of people on a national or regional level in a short period of time.
Mail, which costs little, is one of the direct media. Mail advertising messages are targeted on those most likely to buy the product or service. But unfortunately many are viewed as "junk mail". Billboards, which you see when you're driving down the street, are useful because they are colorful and easy to see and short enough for drivers to read as they are passing by. Signs and posters appearing in the places where the product is being sold, such as supermarkets, are other direct media.
1.According to the passage, why do companies advertise
A. Because advertisements are non-professional but encouraging.
B. Because companies will not make any profit if they don't advertise.
C. Because ads make companies well recognized and business profitable.
D. Because advertising is an introduction to consumers and the general public.
2.The underlined part "opposite ads" in Paragraph 3 refers to "______".
A. ads in magazines
B. ads in newspapers
C. ads which are colorful and appealing
D. ads which have no color and are not appealing
3.For a small local company to advertise, which of the following is it least likely to choose
A. Newspapers. B. Radios. C. Magazines. D. Mail.

11. Online eating shows, or mukbang(吃播), originated in South Korea have gained popularity globally.
Many hosts of such shows have become popular for their ability to eat large amounts of food. But these shows have also received criticism for their waste of food. While some hosts actually do consume the amount of food shown, others may be faking it.
On 12 Aug, CCTV exposed several Chinese hosts who were pretending to eat large amounts of food while on camera, but actually later threw it away.
To discourage this practice, many video and live streaming platforms, including TikTok, Kuaishou and Bilibili, have removed videos that show food waste, and have promoted the message to "stop food waste and eat reasonably".
In June 2020, the United Nations warned that the world is on the verge of the worst food crisis in 50 years.
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, about a third of the world's food—1.3 billion tons—is wasted every year. In China alone, 50 million tons of food end up in landfills every year, according to Beijing News.
Recently, campaigns against food waste have been further promoted. In August, President Xi Jinping stressed the need for safeguarding food security and stopping food waste.
According to China Daily, restaurants and catering associations in more than18 provinces and all 4 municipalities have issued guidelines to control food waste.
In Shanxi Province, local restaurants have been asked to serve half-portions to avoid waste. The Wuhan Catering Association proposed that restaurants adopt the "N-1 mode". For example, a group of 10 diners should only order food enough for nine people first. More food is only brought to the table if required.
In addition, a nationwide "Clear Your Plate" campaign has been launched online. Users of Sina Weibo are encouraged to share photos or videos of empty plates after finishing their meals.
Meanwhile, new laws are also being considered, according to China Daily. "We will make new laws that give clear instructions to avoid food waste," said Zhang Guilong from the Constitution and Law Committee of the National People's Congress. The instructions will be detailed in annual food production, purchasing, storage, transport, processing and consumption, according to Zhang.
1.What is CCTV's attitude towards the food waste in online eating shows
A.Supportive. B.Critical. C.Objective. D.Unclear.
2.What can we infer from Paragraph 4
A.Most video media are contributing to stopping food waste.
B.We should eat up all the food on the table.
C.It's hard to carry out the "Clear Your Plate" campaign.
D.All the videos that show food waste have been removed.
3.What can we do to avoid food waste
A.We can adopt the "N+1 mode".
B.We can eat more food than we need.
C.We can choose not to watch online eating shows.
D.We can ask the restaurants to serve us half-portions.
4.What's the passage mainly about
A.Online eating shows should be banned.
B.New laws should be made to avoid food waste.
C.Measures are being taken to stop food waste.
D.We should share photos or videos of empty plates.
12. We all know that little excitement of creating a popular post on Facebook. Watching the number of "likes" can be both attractive and addictive.
That same buzz(兴奋感) can have its disadvantages, though. We all know the feeling of watching other people's posts get unending positive feedback. We tell ourselves that the only reason why these people are getting attention is that they're popular and good-looking. We sink into self-loathing(自我厌恶) and comparison. Therefore, after experimenting with hiding "likes" on Instagram in select countries, Facebook is considering doing the same on its main platform.
That Facebook is considering this is encouraging. After years of appearing to ignore criticism of its effects on society, the company finally seems to be listening. However, there is a basic conflict between Facebook's business model and its new-found altruism(利他主义). Relying on Facebook to look after its users' mental health is a bit like asking McDonald's to keep its customers' blood pressure under control: At some point, a company's need to make money is not in line with its supposed desire to do good.
The problem with "likes" is that they mark out how successful or happy others are, which in turn can promote a feeling of envy and insecurity. It's a real phenomenon. However, Facebook would certainly want you to post things that get more "likes". The company's success relies upon your posting more and encouraging more "engagement" with other people so that the value of Facebook's targeted ad business increases.
Facebook's reliance on engagement is deep-rooted, and it destroys a supposed desire to prevent the platform from encouraging envy. Without doubt, hiding "likes" can have some benefits, but the way Facebook is built means that this will always be a small step at best.
1.Why does Facebook try hiding "likes" on its main platform
A.To catch more users' eyes. B.To reduce people's envy.
C.To speed the operation of the platform. D.To encourage users to post positive things.
2.What can we infer from the comparison between Facebook and McDonald's
A.Facebook focuses more on the users' interests.
B.Facebook cares less about users' mental health.
C.Facebook makes a lot of money from the users.
D.Facebook does better than McDonald's in service.
3.What does more "engagement" mean to Facebook according to Paragraph 4
A.The growth of value. B.More users' needs.
C.The increases in desire. D.More users' security.
4.What is the author's attitude towards Facebook's hiding "likes"
A.Critical. B.Positive. C.Objective. D.Indifferent.

To discourage this practice, many video and live streaming platforms, including TikTok, Kuaishou and Bilibili, have removed videos that show food waste, and have promoted the message to "stop food waste and eat reasonably". 故选A。
In Shanxi Province, local restaurants have been asked to serve half-portions to avoid waste.
We sink into self-loathing and comparison. Therefore, after experimenting with hiding "likes" on Instagram in select countries, Facebook is considering doing the same on its main platform.
Relying on Facebook to look after its users' mental health is a bit like asking McDonald's to keep its customers' blood pressure under control: At some point, a company's need to make money is not in line with its supposed desire to do good.
The company's success relies upon your posting more and, encouraging more "engagement" with other people so that the value of Facebook's targeted ad business increases. 故选A。
Without doubt, hiding "likes" can have some benefits, but the way Facebook is built means that this will always be a small step at best.

12. Ignore what they say about TV shows rotting your brain—our research finds that many people are using television shows as both a form of entertainment and a way to help them learn English. One of the best ways to teach and to learn how to speak the English language is to actually watch American and British television shows and some learning channels.
We are interested in discovering what English learners are watching to help them improve their skills outside of the classroom. US political drama series House of Cards is the most popular TV show among our 6,000 global survey participants, particularly in China, the Republic of Korea and India. British period drama Downton Abbey is the favourite of Russian and Japanese respondents. However, learners in Mexico, the USA, Turkey and Brazil prefer Breaking Bad.
The rise of on-demand streaming services has enabled viewers all over the world to watch shows without having to wait for them to be broadcast in their country, which explains why shows created especially for online providers, such as House of Cards, have become so universally popular.
Perhaps one of the biggest surprising success stories is Downton Abbey, which is one of the most-watched British TV shows of all time. The show, which explores the lives of an aristocratic(贵族的) British family and their servants during the early twentieth century, has been watched by more than 120 million people worldwide. The creators didn't expect the subject matter to resonate(引起共鸣) so well with global viewers, but most of the stories are about emotional situations that everyone can relate to, no matter where they are in the world.
Television programmes may be a fun way to improve vocabularies and build familiarity with genuine dialogues and different cultures, but in recent years there have been complaints that actors are mumbling(含糊地说) their lines. Even native English speakers are struggling to understand what they are watching on screen. This is partly down to the desire for actors to appear "genuine" and capture the true features of a character.
1.Why has the drama series House of Cards become so popular
A.It is only shown on TV.
B.Its plots interest everyone.
C.It is about the life of the British aristocracy.
D.The audience can watch it online without waiting.
2.What has been the problem with language learning through television programmes in recent years
A.The actors' terrible acting. B.The actors' unclear lines.
C.The dramas' bad plots. D.The dramas' bad lines.

A.To show that people like American and British TV shows.
B.To introduce viewers to the world's most popular TV series.

D.To explain the function of television shows.
4.What is the text mainly about
