Cheese Rolling Festival, England
25. What is Yang Li’s difficulty in making her leaf-vein embroidery
When it was first started, locals of the English town of Brock worth, Gloucestershire would gather at
Cooper’s Hill. Nowadays, this festival attracts competitors from all over the world every May. From the
very top, a 3-4 kg wheel of cheese is sent rolling down the hill. Participants take off after it, trying to
catch the speeding cheese wheel. If nobody manages to catch the rolling cheese, the first person to cross
the finish line would be the winner. The prize is the wheel of cheese, of course. The trip after the cheese
is so difficult that doctors wait at the bottom to provide first aid to unlucky participants in need.

From checking social media every minute to being lost in computer games, we tend to overuse
technology. “For many people, a moment without your phone or laptop in sight can feel like a lifetime,”
the Daily Mail commented.
B. To bless babies.
C. To frighten devils.
D. To educate tourists.
A computer model called Mindy may persuade many people to think twice. A team from the US-based
company Toll Free Forwarding built a three-dimensional(维度的) model to uncover the negative effects
technology can have on human bodies in less than 800 years.
23. What is required of competitors for Cheese Rolling
A. Rich knowledge.
B. Keen curiosity.
D. Responsibility.
C. Athletic body.
“Spending hours looking down at your phone strains (损伤) your neck and throws your spine (脊椎)
off balance,” explained Caleb Backe, a health and wellness expert in the US. Then, the muscles in our
neck need to spend extra effort to support the head, making our back hunched and neck wide.
“The way we hold our phones can cause pressure in certain points of contact-causing text claw(爪
形),” Nikola Djordjevic, a practicing physician in Serbia told the team. It affects the elbows (肘部) too,
causing pain in the arm. Scientifically, it is called cubital tunnel syndrome (肘管综合征). That’s why
Mindy has a 90-degree elbow, and her hands look like she’s always holding a mobile phone.
Some people also commented that human evolution (进化) may not work this way. They believe that
only features with actual benefits would be kept throughout the years. For example, features that can
increase the rate of survival, instead of the negative impact of technology.
B
A small accident led to profound (巨大的) changes in the life of Yang Li, an artisan (手艺人), who is
from the Miao ethnic group. In 201l, Yang, from Tongren city in Guizhou province, created leaf vein (脉
络) embroidery (刺绣) three months after a leaf cut her hand.
The work is a perfect combination of traditional embroidery patterns and the natural textures (纹理) of
the leaves. It has a unique aesthetic (审美的) appeal of traditional embroidery matched with the
characteristics of contemporary craftsmanship (手艺).
As a native Miao woman with an inborn love of embroidery, Yang opened a folk culture products shop
with her sister in 2011. “People are becoming less familiar with traditional handicrafts, and I want to
contribute all I can to change this situation,” Yang says. At first, the small shop did not earn a significant
income as there were many similar products on the market. She gradually realized that it was important to
establish her own brand and launch products with distinct features.
However, current human lifestyles still raise concerns. A model called Emma was built by researchers
in the UK in 2019 to show how the way people work at their desks could change them in 20 years.
The research team built Emma based on the health issues mentioned by over 3,000 workers in France,
Germany and the UK. Emma’s back stays bent, and her legs are swollen due to the time people spent in
front of computers. With little time spent outdoors and in the sun, her skin is pale, too.
28. What is the purpose of building the model Mindy
That’s when she was inspired by the cut. In July 2011, Yang accidentally cut her hand on a thorny (有
刺的) leaf when she was hiking in Fanjing Mountain. A bold idea came into her head: “There are leaf-vein
bookmarks and leaf-vein paintings. Why has nobody created leaf-vein embroider yet ”
Obviously, the reason behind this is that embroidering on leaves requires delicate skills that few
possess. The biggest technical challenge Yang faced was improving the flexibility (柔韧性) of the leaves
and making them as soft as cloth. On Oct 16, a day she will never forget, Yang finally created a shiny, thin
and unbreakable piece of leaf vein. Her idea of leaf-vein embroidery came to completion after hundreds of
experiments.
A. To encourage better use of electric devices.
B. To discourage people from overusing phones.
C. To prove the immediate effects of using phones. D. To find solutions to overusing phones.
29. What does the model Mindy look like
A. She has bent fingers.
B. She has a normal elbow.
Two years later, Yang opened an embroidery processing factory and offered jobs to more than 500
laid-off female workers, rural women and people with disabilities. “I will keep doing the leaf vein
embroidery for the rest of my life because it is meaningful,” she says.
C. She has dark and healthy skin.
30. What is paragraph 5 mainly about
A. Negative technological impact.
C. Mindy’s future appearance.
D. She is hunch-backed and thin-necked.
B. Beneficial evolution prediction.
24. What do we know about Yang Li’s folk culture products shop
D. The connection between evolution and technology.
A. It was inspired by a cut by a leaf in her hand.
31. Why does the author mention another model Emma
A. To compare the two models. B. To promote healthy lifestyles.
B. It was a failure before she began to sell similar products.
C. It was intended to preserve traditional Chinese handicrafts.
C. To relieve concerns of lifestyles.
D. To contradict (反驳) the optimistic opinion.
D It perfectly combined traditional Chinese books and drawings.

There are many famous introverts in art and science, such as Albert Einstein, Charles Darwin, and J.
K. Rowling. It is believed that many introverts have a great ability to focus and strong power of
imagination.
The demanding 2025 federal Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) goal of 54.5 miles per gallon
(加仑) across an automaker’s fleet (车队) is one of the driving factors behind a series of advancements in
more efficient engine technologies. To meet the increasing fuel standards, automakers (车商) have relied
on a range of vehicle types.
____38____ Extroverts (性格外向者) love connecting with other people, work well in groups, and
are usually very confident. When introverts don’t fit into groups of extroverts, they may be seen as cold,
uninterested, or shy. Popular culture tells us that it is important to network, socialize, and communicate,
but all of this can make introverts feel uncomfortable.
Most people tend to think of hybrids (混合的) and electric vehicles when talk turns to energy efficient
cars. A hybrid vehicle uses both electric drive and an internal engine to push the vehicle. When the driver
slows, the battery partially (部分地) recharges through regenerative braking. Today, there are hybrid
versions of many modern mid-size cars. The most recent advancement comes in the form of plug-in
hybrids (插电混动) with larger (and more expensive) battery packs that can be charged at home or the
office, allowing you to drive greater distances on electric power, which significantly improves overall
average fuel economy on most trips.
Scientists are studying what causes someone to be an introvert or an extrovert. Recent studies show
that genes are a factor, and most people seem to be born with one personality or the other. ____39____
The brain of an introvert can respond dramatically to a very mild stim- ulus, but the brain of an extrovert
tends to need a stronger stimulus to have the same reaction. Our environment and experiences also
influence whether we are introverted or extroverted. The term ambivert (中间性格者) describes someone
who is right in the middle. ____40____.
Electric cars are also evolving (演化), but still confront (面临) hurdles (障碍) when it comes to
battery cost and a somewhat limited range in certain models. Promising electrics are on the horizon, but
it’s best to reserve judgment until we see whether they deliver at a price point more consumers can afford.
Hydrogen (氢) fuel cell vehicles are also advancing. Essentially, these are electric cars with the
electricity supplied by hydrogen and oxygen passing through a fuel cell stack (电磁堆). They’re super
clean, producing only water vapor (蒸气) and a little heat at the tailpipe (排气管). Until we have a much
larger hydrogen-fuel basic facilities (设施), these types of vehicles will be limited to regional use in major
metro areas (都市区).
A. The opposite of an introvert is called an extrovert.
B. Extroverts are easily accessible and understandable.
C. Introverted people are known to live with unique challenges and gift.
D. It would also celebrate the contributions of introverts throughout history.
E. Introverted people don’t require a lot of social contact, and they enjoy spending time alone.
F. Whatever personality type we have, we can celebrate our differences and learn from each other.
G. Part of what makes us introverted or extroverted is how our brains respond to the world around us.
As you can tell, along with engine technology, advancements have been made in many other areas.
With the technological competition among automakers, energy efficient cars are evolving at an impressive
pace, and that’s a good thing for the planet.

beautifully dressed ladies and finding yourself in a smelly T-shirt.
