The Best Books Chosen by Dan Chaon
Dan Chaon is a famous author. Below are four new books recommended by him.
French Braid by Anne Tyler
This has already been a good year for books, with new work from greats like Jennifer Egan, Jean Thompson, and Marlon James. But I was particularly excited to see a new book from Anne Tyler, whose work I’ve loved since I read Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant in college. Tyler now 80. puts together the lives of a Baltimore family over decades, and h insights are as sharp, funny, and moving as ever.
Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel
I love the fearlessness and insistent humanity of Mandel’s work. Her new book — a kind of companion to her 2014 best-seller, Station Eleven — is an ambitious, time-travelling puzzle box about the ways in which we humans are always living at the end of the world.
Now Do You Know Where You Are by Dana Levin
Levin is one of my favourite modern poets, and her new book is one of her best-a complex description of what it’s like to live in modern America, which I feel I will be learning from for years to come.
Ghosts Caught on Film by Barrett Bowlin
This collection of stories, the author’s first book, blew me away with its strange vision of anxious and tormented (折磨的) characters caught up in surreal situations, tightrope-walking a perfect line between horror and heartbreak: not unlike 2022 itself.
1. Which book was loved by Dan Chaon when he was in college
A. French Braid. B. Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant.
C. Sea of Tranquility. D. Now Do You Know Where You Are.
2. Who wrote the best seller Station Eleven
A. Dan Chaon. B. Anne Tyler. C. Emily St. John Mandel. D. Dana Levin.
3. What can we know about the book Ghosts Caught on Film

C. It’s about a modern way of life. D. It’s the first book of Barrett Bowlin.

When Ariel Cordova-Rojas rode her bike to Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens, New York, last November, she planned to go hiking and bird-watching. A mile into her walk, she found a female mute swan (疣鼻天鹅) near the water’s edge. Cordova-Rojas, 30, who had worked at the Wild Bird Fund rehabilitation centre in Manhattan, knew that mute swans can be angry and ready to attack. But as she approached this one, it didn’t move.
She was certain that the bird needed medical attention. Cordova-Rojas put her jacket over the bird’s head to keep it calm, carefully picked it up, and held it in her arms. And then a thought struck her: What do I do now
Her best hope was the rehab (康复) centre, but that was across the East River and clear on the other side of town. How was she going to transport a 17-pound swan on her bike all that way Luckily, some strangers driving by offered her, her bike, and the swan a lift to a nearby subway station.
On the subway, no one seemed particularly frightened by the feathered passenger. One guy, says Cordova-Rojas, was “sitting right in front of me on his phone. I don’t know if he noticed there was a swan in front of him.”
Cordova-Rojas called the rehab centre on the road, and Tristan Higgin-botham, an animal-care manager, picked her up at the subway station and drove the bird, the bike, and the rescuer to the centre. There, staff members determined that the swan might have lead poisoning (中毒), caused by taking weights used on fishing lines.
The staff got the swan back up on her feet. Sadly, even with all that care, the swan got a serious infection (感染). Two months after Cordova-Rojas came to her rescue, she passed away.
It’s a disappointing ending, but the real story is just how far some people are willing to go to save a swan in the big city-literally. In all, Cordova-Rojas travelled two hours by foot, car, and subway while honking (按喇叭) her bike. Says Higgin-botham, “That’s the perfect summary of who she is,”
4. Why did Cordova-Rojas put her jacket over the bird’s head
A. To catch the swan. B. To calm the swan down.
C. To keep the swan warm. D. To block the swan’s sight.
5. How did Cordova-Rojas get to the subway station with the swan
A. She rode her bike. B. She got there on foot.
C. She took a bus. D. She was offered a lift.
6. What was wrong with the swan
A. She had lead poisoning. B. She was injured on her feet.
C. She was trapped by a fishing net. D. She nearly died from hunger.
7. What’s the best title for the text
A. How to Protect Birds B. Strangers Kind Action
C. Honk If You Love Birds D. The Last Song of the Swan
C
A city is rising from the waters of the Indian Ocean. In a lagoon (泄湖),just 10 minutes by boat from Malé, the Maldivian capital, a floating (漂浮) city, big enough to house 20,000 people, is being constructed (建造)。
Designed in a pattern (模式) similar to brain coral (脑珊瑚),the city will consist of 5.000 floating units including houses, restaurants, shops and schools, with rivers running in between. Residents start to move in by early 2024, and the whole city is due to be completed by 2027. The project is not meant as a wild experiment: it’s being built as a practical solution to the reality of sea level rise.
Containing 1.190 low-lying islands, the Maldives is one of the world’s weakest nations to climate change. Eighty percent of its land area is less than one metre above sea level, and with sea level projected to rise up to a metre by the end of the century, almost the entire country would go under the water.
The units are constructed in a local shipyard, then pulled to the floating city. Once in position, they are joined to a large underwater concrete frame which is fixed to the seabed on telescopic (可伸缩的) steel poles that let it gently flow with the waves.
Koen Olthuis, founder of Waterstudio, the company that designed the city, said that the possible environmental effect of the structure was assessed by local coral experts and permitted by government authorities before construction began. The aim is for the city to be self-sufficient and have all the functions as one on land. There will be electricity powered mainly by solar energy. As an alternative to air conditioning, the city will use deep sea water cooling, which involves pumping cold water from the deep sea into the lagoon, helping to save energy.
8. What is the purpose of building the floating city
A. To develop its tourism. B. To get more living space.
C. To perform a wild experiment. D. To deal with the rising sea level.
9. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about
A. The feature of the city. B. The location of the city.
C. The construction process of the city. D. The building materials of the city.
10. Where is the electricity mostly produced from
A Wind energy. B. Solar energy. C. Water energy. D. Wave energy.
11. What can be learned from the last paragraph
A. The city is environmentally friendly.
B. The city has no modern equipment.
C. The life of the city is not very convenient.
D. The government authorities love the life here.

Fifteen years ago Steve Jobs announced three new products: a music player, a mobile phone and an Internet communicator. As Apple’s then-boss gave his presentation, his audience slowly realized that the three products were in fact a single device: the iPhone.
Today even Mr Jobs might be surprised by how many uses have been found for his versatile device. The small screen has come to deal with banking, networking, map-reading, gaming and much more. Apple and other phonemakers have been enriched by hardware sales.
Yet there is increasing evidence that the smartphone era is becoming weak. Phone sales have been in gentle decline(下降) since 2016,as slower technological improvement has led to people upgrading less often. In rich countries, already saturated(饱和),the decline is especially marked. So tech investors(投资者)are on the hunt for the next big thing, in hopes of winning not just a juicy hardware market but the possibility to control the platform on which everything takes place.
The current big idea is virtual-reality(VR)headsets. More promising are glasses for experiencing augmented reality(AR), in which computer graphics are overlaid on the real world. Most of America’s big tech companies are developing or already selling VR or AR headsets. What has so far been a niche(小众的) market is about to become very crowded.
Any claim to have discovered the next big platform deserves caution(谨慎).There have been plenty of false starts.Tablets were regarded as a rival(竞争对手)to the smartphone, yet Apple still makes six times as much money selling iPhones as it does from iPads. In-car tech is another platform that has proved useful and valuable, but hardly threatens to become the centre of anyone’s digital life.It is easy to imagine headsets, which are now used mostly for gaming, getting stuck in a similar niche.
Customers gradually favour new wearable devices. These include voice-activated smart headphones, which can make calls and read messages. Smart watches can deal with scheduling, navigation and fitness. A growing array of health-tech products measure everything from blood sugar to sleep patterns. In America unit sales of these“wearables”are already close to sales of smartphones.
12. What does the underlined word“versatile”in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Being easy to use. B. Being very smart.
C. Being very expensive. D. Having many functions.
13. Why have phone sales been on the drop since 2016
A. The market is already saturated in most countries.
B. People find less need to upgrade their smartphones.
C. Tech investors are on the hunt for the next big thing
D There is no technological improvement in smartphones
14. What’s the author’s attitude to the possibility that headsets will become the next big thing
A. Doubtful. B. Negative. C. Cautious. D. Positive.
15. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. The sales of “wearables”are probably on the rise.
B. The smartphones will soon disappear from our market.
C. Health-tech products will beat voice activated smart headphones.
D. Wearable devices will replace smartphones as the next big tech platform.

There were arrangements for guests to enjoy nature and view wild animals roaming (游荡) in nearby places.
On the first day of their trip, they saw a small dog while entering the cottage. When Jimmy’s two year-old son noticed that dog, he offered it a biscuit with his small hands. The dog was happy to get a treat from the kid and stay with him. Soon the kid and the dog became friends. From that moment, the dog wouldn’t leave the kid’s side even for a minute.
On the third day of the trip, Jimmy’s family and their friends celebrated the kid’s birthday and everyone enjoyed it. The next day they wanted to spend more time in the forest. So all the adults decided to go for hunting and the kid was left in the care of his baby-sitter in the cottage.
Few hours later, Jimmy and his wife were the first to get back. When they walked up to the cottage, they saw that main gate was open and in the hall no one was there. So they called their kid and the baby-sitter, but they got no reply.

【答案】4. B 5. D 6. A 7.

10. Where is the electricity mostly produced from
A. Wind energy.

D. There is no technological improvement in smartphones
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. C 15. A

【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中“Any claim to have discovered the next big platform deserves caution(谨慎).There have been plenty of false starts.(任何声称发现了下一个大平台言论都值得谨慎。有很多错误的开始于此。)”以及本段中举出的相关例子“It is easy to imagine headsets, which are now used mostly for gaming, getting stuck in a similar niche.(不难想象,现在主要用于游戏的耳机也会陷入类似的小众市场。)”
以及“In America unit sales of these“wearables”are already close to sales of smartphones.(在美国,这些“可穿戴设备”的销量已经接近智能手机的销量。)”可知,在美国,可穿戴设备的销售额已经接近智能手机的销售额,可以推测可穿戴设备的销售正在上升。故选A。
