(1)Which of the following statements is true/false?
(2)Which of the following is (not) mentioned?
(3)How many/How much/Where/How/What…?
(4)What does the writer think of…?
(5)Which is the right order of the events given in the passage? 【
When Buster was brought into the animals' home, he was wet and smelly. But Jimmy who worked there knew what soap and water and a good brushing could do.
After a bath, Jimmy put Buster in a cage and gave him some food and fresh water.
Buster wanted a home. He wanted a family. He wanted a yard. Most of all, he wanted someone to love him. A man came over to the cage. Buster curled up on his blanket and closed his eyes. “He's no fun,” said the man. “He's too quiet.”
A family came along. Buster barked and barked, so they would notice him. “He's too noisy,” said the mother. They all walked away.
Other people passed by.
“Too furry.”
“Too bony.”
“Don't give up,” Jimmy said to Buster. “Someone will want you.”
Another family asked Jimmy to take Buster out of the cage. “He's too big,” said the mother. “He might scare the baby.” The next family came along. “He's too small,” said the father. “He wouldn't be a good watchdog.”

Getting a little upset, he headed back for dinner. As he was going back, he saw his grandma's duck. Without thinking, he let the slingshot fly, hitting the duck in the head and killing it.
In a panic, he hid the dead duck in the woodpile(柴堆), only to see his sister watching! But Sally said nothing. After lunch the next day, Grandma said, “Sally, help me with the dishes.” But Sally said, “Grandma, Johnny told me he wanted to help in the kitchen.” Then she whispered(耳语) to Johnny, “Remember the duck?” So Johnny did the dishes.

Students are still taught to read notation(乐谱) so they can recite compositions that they would never listen to on their MP3 players or play with friends. Playing music enriches life. The question is why do schools teach music in a way that turns off so many young people rather than catch their imagination? Can we do a better job of using the power of music to get kids excited about school? The experience of an organization called Little Kids Rock suggests the answer is yes—if we change the way music is taught. Little Kids Rock has helped music programmes in over a thousand public schools and served 150,000 children. The organization has given 30,000 free instruments out, mainly guitars, and trained 1,500 teachers to run music classes in which students quickly experience the joys of playing their favourite songs, performing in bands(乐队), and writing their own music. The key to Little Kids Rock is that it teaches children to play music the way many musicians learn to play it—not by notation, but by listening, imitation(模仿) and meaningful experimentation. “The knowledge you need to get started playing rock music is very limited,” explains Dave Wish, the founder of Little Kids Rock. “In high school, my friend Paul taught me a couple of chords(和弦) and my life was changed forever.” On the first day of class, Little Kids Rock teachers place guitars in the hands of their students and get them practising chords that will enable them to play thousands of songs. The kids decide what songs they want to learn and the class is off and running. Their progress is surprising. Within a year, eight and nine-year-olds are playing musical instruments, and giving concerts, even performing their own songs. One of the biggest advantages that music offers is the ability to encourage students who are otherwise bored by school. “I've had students start coming back to school because of this programme.” said Adkison Thomas, who heads up music for the Dallas Independent School District. He added, “One of the best things is that the teachers discover a new side of their students. They see kids become successful who weren't before.”1.The expression “turn off” in Paragraph 1 means “________”.
A.make kids feel cool
B.make kids feel bored
C.make kids feel confident
D.make kids feel nervous
2.How did Little Kids Rock help the school?
A.By writing music for kids.
B.By playing kids' favourite songs.
C.By making instruments for school.
D.By training teachers for music classes. 3.Little Kids Rock is successful because________.
A.it encourages kids to experience music
B.it helps kids learn from great musicians
C.it allows kids to decide how to learn music
D.it offers musical programmes all over the country
4.What does the writer want to tell us?
A.Learning music is a good way to become successful.
B.Teaching in a proper way benefits students' development.
C.It's necessary for students to practise a lot in learning music.
D.It's important for teachers to discover the new sides of
students.

2.D 3. A 4. B
Researchers have recently discovered how to make families work more successfully. A surprising idea has appeared:the single most important thing you can do for your family, it seems, is to develop a family story.
I first heard this idea in the mid-1990s from Marshall Duke, a professor at Emory University. Duke was studying stories in families when his wife, a children's learning specialist, made a discovery. “The students who know a lot about their families will do better when they face challenges(挑战),” Sara said. Interested, Duke set out to test her conclusion. He and Emory workmate Robyn Fivush developed a method called the “Do You Know?” degree that asked children to answer 20 questions such as:Do you know where your grandparents grew up? Do you know where your mom and dad went to high school? Do you know about an illness or something really terrible that happened in your family? Duke and Fivush asked those questions to members of four dozen families in 2001. They then compared the children's results with a group of psychological(心理学的) tests the children had taken and reached a conclusion that agreed to Sara's theory. The more children knew about their families' histories, the stronger their sense of control over their lives, the higher their self-respect, and the more successfully they believed their families worked from generation to generation(代代传承).
“We were blown away,” Duke said. The researchers mentioned the children after the terrible events of September 11, 2001. “Once again,” Duke said, “the ones who knew more about their families proved to be stronger.” Why does knowing where her grandmother went to school help a child overcome something terrible and difficult? Duke said that children who have the most self-confidence have what he calls “a strong intergenerational self.” They know that they come from something bigger than themselves.
Duke suggested that parents do the same activities with their children again and again. Any kind of activities work to teach the sense of history: holidays, vacations, big family get-togethers, even a drive to the shop. “These traditions become part of your family,”Duke said. Years of research have showed that most happy families also communicate successfully, but it's not simply a matter of talking through problems. Talking also means telling a positive(正面的) story about yourselves. When faced with a challenge, happy families, like happy people, just add a new chapter(章) to their life story that shows them overcoming the difficulty. This skill is very important for children when they are growing up.
The bottom lines:if you want a happier family, create, refine and retell the story of your family's best moments and your relations' ability to overcome difficulty. That act alone may prove the fact that your family will thrive(兴旺) for many generations to come. What does the passage mainly tell us?
A.Happy children are usually brought up in happy
families.
B.Our family is the most important place to teach
children.
C.There are many things for the young to learn from
the old.
D.Family history plays an important part when
children grow up.
( )2. What can the “Do you know?” degree tell us?
A.What relation in one's family is.
B.What story one's family has had.
C.How much one knows his family.
D.How much one loves his family. D C ( )3. The underlined sentence “We were blown away” in the
passage may mean “________”.
A.We were surprised very much
B.We were deeply moved
C.We were punished seriously
( )4. Which of the following is true, according to the passage?
A.The event of September 11, 2001 helped Duke draw
his conclusion.
B.Duck thinks that a strong intergenerational self is
the most important.
C.Duke and Sara's research work led us to an
unexpected conclusion.

It is normal and can even be helpful to experience fear sometimes. In dangerous situations, fear can keep our bodies alert(警醒的) so that we can act quickly to protect ourselves. But for some people, fear develops into a “phobia”, which is a strong and unreasonable fear of something. For example, most of us feel a little scared when looking down from a tall building. But people with height phobia may have trouble breathing, feel dizzy or turn down a great job just because the company is on the 20th floor.
Phobias can prevent you from living a normal life. “People with spider phobia would stay out of their home or dorm room for days if they thought a spider was present.” Katherina Hauner, a researcher at Northwestern University, US, told ABC News. This is why scientists have been trying to find a cure for this disease. Since fear comes from experience—from what we are told, what we see others experience and what happens to us—some scientists think if they can “rewrite” these unpleasant memories, they might be able to help people overcome their phobias.
In a study by Katherina Hauner and other scientists, participants with spider phobia were asked to first touch a spider with a paintbrush. Seeing that it was not actually dangerous, they then tried touching it while wearing a glove. Finally, they could hold it with their hands. Certain medicine has also been found to be helpful. Back in 2010, researchers at the University of Hiroshima, Japan, injected a special medicine into a fish—who was afraid of light—to turn off the fear centre in its brain. From then on, the fish no longer feared light.
While the search for solutions to phobias is making great progress, it's an open question whether getting rid of(去除) fear is good. Some people want to use these methods to make soldiers fight harder in wars by taking away their sense of fear. Dave Smithson of the charity Anxiety UK has his own idea. “It's fear that prevents us from doing crazy things,” he says. “There's a name for people who don't have fear of consequences:psychopaths(精神变态者).” 1.The expression “overcome” probably means “________”.
A.control B.beat
C.weaken D.repeat
2.What can we learn from the passage?
A.People with spider phobia could be cured by touching a
spider.
B.A person with height phobia would lose his great job in
a high building.
C.People would feel scared when seeing others frightened
by something.
D.People have found certain medicine to help soldiers
fight harder in wars. 3.Which of the following would Dave Smithson probably
agree with?
A.Without fear, people would be braver.
B.We shouldn't let fear affect our decision.
C.Fear stops us from doing some creative things.
D.Fear can help avoid taking unnecessary chances.
4.What is probably the best title for this passage?
A.Why is fear helpful?
B.Is fear good or not?
C.How do we treat fear?
D.When should fear be treated?
Children can spend hours a day looking at computer screens and other digital devices(数码设备).Some eye doctors say this leads to an increase in “computer vision syndrome(电脑视力综合症)”.
Nathan Bonilla-Warford is an optometrist(验光师)in Tampa, Florida. He has seen an increase in problems in children. “A lot more children come into the office either because their parents have noticed that they have headaches or red or watery eyes or discomfort, or because their nearsightedness appears to be increasing and they're worried,” he says. Dr. Bonilla-Warford says part of the problem is that children may be more likely to pay no attention to early warning signs than adults. “Even if their eyes start to feel uncomfortable or they start to get a headache, they're less likely to tell their parents, because they don't want to have the game or the computer or whatever taken away,” he explains.
He says another part of the problem is that people blink(眨眼)less often when they use digital devices. He says, “A person who uses an electronic device blinks about one third as much as we normally do in everyday life. And that can result in the front part of the eye drying and not staying protected like normal.” Eye doctors offer suggestions like following which is known as the 20/20/20 rule. That means every twenty minutes look away twenty feet or more for at least twenty seconds from whatever device you're using.
Other suggestions include putting more distance between you and the device and using good lighting. Of course, another way is to spend less time looking at screens. Many experts say children should spend no more than two hours a day using digital devices—with no screen time for children under two. But not all eye doctors have noticed an increase in problems in children. Dr. David Hunter, from Children's Hospital Boston, has not seen an increase in his practice. “While it is possible to develop fatigue looking at screens for a long period of time, there's certainly no proof that it actually causes any damage(伤害)to the eyes.” he says. Why don't some of the children tell their parents even
if their eyes feel uncomfortable or they start to get a
headache?
A.Because they don't like their parents.
B.Because they don't believe their parents.

(1)From the text, it can be inferred that________.
(2)The passage suggests that________.
(3)Which of the following best describes________.
(4)The writer's attitude towards…is________.
(5)From the text, we learn that________.
The extraordinary Eastgate Building in Harare, Zimbabwe's capital city, is said to be the only one in the world to use the same cooling and heating principles as the termite mound(白蚁堆).
Architect Mick Pearce used precisely the same strategy when designing the Eastgate Building, which has no air-conditioning and almost no heating. The building—the country's largest commercial and shopping complex—uses less than 10% of the energy of a conventional building of its size. The Eastgate's owners saved $3.5 million on a $36 million building because an air-conditioning plant didn't have to be imported. The complex is actually two buildings linked by bridges across a shady, glass-roofed atrium(天井) open to the air. Fans suck fresh air in from the atrium, blow it upstairs through hollow spaces under the floors and from there into each office through baseboard vents(通风口). As it rises and warms, it is drawn out via ceiling vents and finally exists through forty-eight brick chimneys.
During summer's cool nights, big fans blow air through the building seven times an hour to cool the empty floors. By day, smaller fans blow two changes of air an hour through the building, to circulate the air which has been in contact with the cool floors. For winter days, there are small heaters in the vents. This is all possible only because Harare is 1,600 feet above sea level, has cloudless skies, little dampness and rapid temperature swings—days as warm as 31℃ commonly drop to 14℃ at night. “You couldn't do this in New York, with its fantastically hot summers and fantastically cold winters,” Pearce said.
The engineering firm of Ove Arup&Partners monitors daily temperatures. It is found that the temperature of the building has generally stayed between 23℃ and 25℃, with the exception of the annual hot period just before the summer rains in October and three days in November, when a doorkeeper accidentally switched off the fans at night. And the air is fresh—far more so than in air-conditioned buildings, where up to 30% of the air is recycled. 1.Why was Eastgate cheaper to be built than a conventional
building?
A.It was designed in a smaller size.
B.No air conditioners were fixed in.
C.Its heating system was less advanced.
D.It used rather different building materials.
2.What does “it” refer to in Paragraph 3?
A.Fresh air from outside.
B.Heat in the building.
C.Hollow space.
D.Baseboard vent. 3.Why would a building like Eastgate Not work efficiently in
New York?
A.New York has less clear skies as Harare.
B.Its dampness affects the circulation of air.
C.New York covers a larger area than Harare.
D.Its temperature changes seasonally rather than daily.
4.The data in the last paragraph suggests Eastgate's
temperature control system________.

Before my first summer vacation at college, my roommate Ted asked me to work with him on his father's farm in Argentina. The idea of spending two months in Argentina was exciting. But I was afraid of it. I had never been far from New England. What would it be like in a strange country? What about the language? The more I thought about it, the more the idea worried me. In the end I turned down the invitation. As soon as Ted asked somebody else to go, I began kicking myself. I had turned down something I wanted to do because I was afraid, and had ended up feeling depressed (沮丧的). That unhappy summer taught me a valuable lesson out of which I developed a rule for myself: do what makes you worried; don't do what makes you depressed.
At the end of my senior year, I began to think about becoming a writer. But my professor was telling me to aim at teaching. I hesitated (犹豫). The idea of trying to live by writing was a lot scarier than spending a summer in Argentina. Back and forth I went, making my decision, unmaking it. Suddenly I realised that every time I gave up the idea of writing, that downhearted feeling went through me. Giving up on what I really wanted to do depressed me. Right then I learned another lesson. To avoid that kind of depression meant having to bear a certain amount of worry and concern.
When I first began writing articles, I was frequently required to interview big names. Before each interview I would get anxieties (焦虑) in the mind and my hands would shake. One person I particularly admired was the great composer Duke Ellington. On the stage and on television, he seemed the very model of confidence. Then I learned Ellington still got stage fright and had anxiety attacks. I went on doing those frightening interviews. Then I realised that I was even looking forward to the interviews. What had happened to those anxieties? Well, in truth, the anxieties were still there, but there were fewer of them. I had benefited from a process of overcoming them. If you put an individual in an anxious situation often enough, he will eventually learn that there isn't anything to be worried about. This brings me to a conclusion: you'll never get rid of anxiety by avoiding the things that caused it. The point is that the new, the different, is definitely scary (可怕的). But each time you try something, you learn, and as the learning piles up, the world opens to you. What does the phrase “turned down” mean in the
second paragraph?
A.To say “No” to his roommate.
B.To say in a low voice.
C.To put away the invitation.
D.To take the invitation.
A ( )2. We can infer from the passage that the writer
________.
A.finds it difficult to make decisions
B.has found out what causes anxiety
C.was inspired (受启发的) by Duke Ellington's
stage fright
D.no longer feels anxious about new experiences阅读考点解题技巧及训练C 解析 作者在前4段说到当自己要做一些事时会感到担忧,后来他遇到了the great composer Duke Ellington,作者认为他是一个自信的人,但他在舞台上也会害怕。再由下文“I went on doing those frightening interviews. Then I realised that I was even looking forward to the interviews.” C。 ( )3. Which of the following opinions does the writer

What about your plan? I'm looking forward to hearing from you.
