Carrie: Hi Sam! I’m going in July, and I’ll be studying Chinese in Nanjing for a month. I’m so excited! △ There will be 150 high school students from all over the world taking the course.
Sam: Wow, that must be really cool! I haven’t been to Nanjing, but I took a similar [ s m l (r)] course in Beijing last year. Do you know what your schedule [ edju l] will be like
Carrie: △ There will be three hours of Chinese lessons focusing on reading and writing in the morning, starting at 8: 30.
△ In the afternoon, we will have one hour of speaking practice in small groups, followed by two hours of cultural activities. I’ll be very busy this summer, but I’m really looking forward to it----I’ve never been to China before.
Sam: I’m sure you’ll have a great time. Doing cultural activities sounds fun!
Carrie: That’s right. We’ll do lots of interesting things! Guess what! There will be a Chinese cooking class! Well also visit some famous sites, such as Purple Mountain----I’ve seen some photos, and everything looks amazing! I’m really looking forward to communicating with the local people.
Sam: Well, sounds like someone is going to have a wonderful summer! And I’m sure your Chinese will improve a lot.
Carrie: I hope so! I have to go now, but could you tell me more about the language course you took in China last year I’m really interested in knowing what studying in China is like.

Tapescript
Sam: Hi Carrie, it’s so cool that you’re going to China! You know, I took a two-month language course in China last year, and it really helped improve my Chinese especially my speaking skills! The language course I took was completely in Chinese. We were not allowed to speak any English in the classroom.
Similar to your language course, we were asked to practise listening, speaking, reading and writing. For me, the most difficult part was writing Chinese characters. I also enjoyed the cultural activities. We could choose to learn Chinese calligraphy, Chinese painting and Peking Opera. As a music lover, I chose Peking Opera. It was difficult but really fun!
When I took the course, I could choose to stay in a dorm or with a host family. Sharing a dorm room with five other students might be fun, but in order to better understand Chinese culture and have more opportunities to speak Chinese, I chose to stay with a host family. They were really nice and I truly enjoyed the experience. Another thing that made me happy was that I could try all kinds of Chinese food----everything was so tasty. I’m sure you’ll also have a great time in China.
A3. In pairs, discuss the advantages and disadvantages of going on short-term study trips abroad. Use the example below to help you and pay attention to the expressions in bold/ red. P60
A: I believe it's good for high school students to go on short-term study trips abroad. At that age, they learn a foreign language more easily.
B: I see exactly what you mean. However, I wonder whether it’s really safe for high school students to travel to another country.
A: That’s a good point(说得很有道理). But most exchange programmes provide a safe study environment. The students always travel in a group.
B: Perhaps you’re right. Anyway, I also believe they’ll feel lonely, since they’ll be far away from their family.
A: I see what you mean. On the other hand, it’s actually easier to make friends on trips like that, since everyone is away from their family and classmates.
B: Yes, I agree. I guess it’s a great opportunity for them to see the world.
B. Reading, viewing and writing

1. What does the underlined word “minimize” in the last paragraph mean
“Minimize” means to reduce something, especially something bad, to the lowest possible level.
2. After having lunch at Canteen A, a student needs to go to the Library and then to the Science Labs. Look at “School map (before)” and describe the quickest way.
To go to the Library, go down the road and walk past Teaching Buildings B and C. Then turn left and you will come across the Library. After you come out of the Library, you should go southwards down the road and soon you will come to the Science Labs on your left. You can’t miss them.
B2. What do you think of Greenland High School’s redevelopment plan Write an email to the principal about your ideas on the redevelopment plan and other changes that can be made. P61
(Possible answer)
Dear Principal,
I am writing to suggest some improvements to our school.
First, Canteen A is a bit small at the moment, and Canteen B is very old. We should combine the Theatre and Canteen A into one building.
Purpose of
the email
Ideas and
suggestions
That way, there will be enough space for all the students to have lunch in Canteen A. Canteen B can then be turned into an activity centre where the students can do different after-class activities.
Ideas and
suggestions
Second, during rainy days, the students often get their textbooks wet when they go between buildings. I think we should add corridors ['k r d :z] [(建筑物内的)走廊,过道,通道] between the buildings.
Ideas and
suggestions
Third, the playground is too small and not looking very nice right now. Since many of the students like playing basketball, I think we should change it into an outdoor basketball court.
Ideas and
suggestions
Finally, the school is looking very grey(昏暗的;阴沉的) at the moment. I think that we should build a greenhouse in the area between Teaching Building A and Offices to create a greener environment for the students.
Ideas and
suggestions
Thank you for considering my suggestions. I look forward to a better study environment.
Yours sincerely,
Charles Best
Conclusion
Appreciating language
When we are no longer young, we look back on what we could have done better, and we think about the things we did not do. Read aloud the passage below about an old man’s advice.
look back on回首(往事);回忆;回顾
If I Were a Boy Again
If I were a boy again, I would try hard to know about and then deal honestly with myself, to study up(完全;彻底地) my own weaknesses and strengths, and I would begin early enough, before faults(过错;过失;弱点;缺点) had time to become habits.
If I were a boy again, I would practise perseverance, and never give up because it was hard to do something. If we want light, we must conquer darkness.
There is nothing more valuable than a determination to persevere when the right thing needs to be done. It can sometimes equal genius in its results.
persevere (in sth/in doing sth) / ~ (with sth/sb) | p :s v (r); p :rs v r|坚持;孜孜以求
genius| d i:ni s|天才;天资;天赋
If I were a boy again, I would build a habit of attention, and I would let nothing come between me and the subject at hand: an ice skater never tries to skate in two directions at once.
come between sb and sb[无被动态] 损害…
(close/near) at hand(在时间或距离上)接近
Help was at hand.
One of our great mistakes, while we are young, is that we do not focus strictly on what we are doing at that particular moment. It is easy to learn how to pay attention, if we begin early enough.
If I were a boy again, I would try to become a fearless person. I would consider courage as one of the highest achievements of life. Dangers will arise in any place, at any time, but presence of mind will often conquer the worst of them. Be prepared for any fate, and there is no harm to be feared.
fearless| f l s; 美 f rl s|
If I were a boy again, I would look on the cheerful side of everything. Life is like a mirror; if you smile upon it, it smiles back again on you, but if you frown, you will be sure to get a similar look in return.
look on the bright/cheerful side(对坏情况)持乐观态度,看到光明的一面
smile (at sb/sth) 微笑;笑
frown (at sb/sth) 皱眉;
in return (for sth)
A. 作为(对…
Inner sunshine warms not only the heart of the owner, but all who come in contact with it.
(Adapted from “If I Were a Boy Again: A Plain Talk with My Nephews”, by James Thomas Fields)
not only… but (also)…/ not only… (but) also…不但…而且…
He not only read the book, but also remembered what he had read.
She not only wrote the text but also selected the illustrations.
in contact with保持联系;有联系
come in contact with接触
Guided reading
James Thomas Fields (1817 — 1881) was a famous writer and publisher in 19th-century Boston. This is an adapted excerpt from the end of an essay where Fields gives advice to the young. Fields wrote this as he looked back on his life, thinking about what he could have done differently.
excerpt (from sth) | eks :pt;
The message is very optimistic: life is full of possibilities, and we can all learn new things and improve ourselves. If we have the right attitude, we can make the most out of our lives.
optimistic (about sth) | ~ (that…)
Through repetition, Fields strengthens his argument. Each paragraph starts with “If I were a boy again, I would ...”, and discusses one aspect of self-improvement, such as practising perseverance and building a habit of attention.
This repetition adds a natural rhythm to the text, and gives the reader a clear path to follow. Furthermore, the use of the first person makes the text more personal.
By framing the advice in the form of “what I would do” rather than “what you should do”, Fields shows that he is speaking from experience The end result is a persuasive and direct text that is also pleasant to read.
frame(以某种方式)表达
persuasive|p swe s v; 美 p r s-|
