The announcement came after a report went viral online claiming the base camp of the mountain was "permanently closed due to heavy pollution" and caused a universal misunderstanding.
Mount Qomolangma National Nature Reserve was set up in 1988. Covering an area of more than 33,819 square kilometers, it is home to one of the world's weakest ecosystems.
Kelsang, the deputy director of the Reserve Administration, said ordinary tourists were allowed to visit areas around Rongpo Monastery, almost 5,000 meters above sea level. As for travelers who have a climbing permit, they can go to the base camp at an altitude of 5,200 meters. The mountaineering activities have been permitted by the regional forestry department.
To conserve the environment surrounding Mount Qomolangma, China carried out three major clean-ups at an altitude of 5,200 meters and above last spring, collecting eight tons of household wastes, human wastes and mountaineering trash. This year, the clean-up will continue, and the remains of mountaineering victims above 8,000 meters will be centrally dealt with for the first time. Meanwhile, the number of people who stay at the base camp will be kept under 300.
Recently, there are 85 wildlife protectors in the reserve, and 1,000 herders have part-time jobs going around and cleaning up garbage.

11. Back in April 1939 and armed with $5,000 provided by the Rockefeller Foundation, professor Frank Cyr at Teachers College, Columbia University took a tour of ten states to make the research about school transportation problems. What he found was that many students had no dependable way to get to school and the ones who did often travelled in unsafe buses in the over 100,000 school areas.
Seeing a need to fix this problem, Cyr organised a meeting—one that would change the future of school buses forever. School officials and transportation experts met to set much-needed standards for buses, including those for colour, height and width as well as safety rules that hadn't been set before or that were different in every state.
There were many different bus colours in the US before this meeting; several areas even planned to have red, white and blue buses as a way of encouraging students to love their country. Cyr presented his new choice to education officials, a reported "50 shades(色度) changing from lemon yellow to deep orange red". The matter was settled quickly. Yellow, or "National School Bus Glossy Yellow", was chosen because it was quite striking, making the school bus easy to be seen. Besides, it made the bold(黑体的), black writing on the side of each bus clear. (The bold, black writing gives information about each school area, telling students which school bus they could take during early morning and late afternoon hours.) Thirty-five states made the changes quickly, and every state took them on board by 1974.
Being recognised as the "father of the yellow school bus", Frank Cyr has surely influenced your life if you ever rode a school bus or saw that noticeable colour pulling up to your stop on a dusky morning.
1. What did Frank Cyr find about the school buses in the US
A. Funny. B. Surprising. C. Disappointing. D. Reliable.
2. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A. Who attended the meeting. B. Why the meeting was held.
C. What was settled in the meeting. D. What was discussed in the meeting.
3. What does the underlined word "striking" in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Soft. B. Bright. C. Natural. D. Beautiful.
4. What is the main idea of the text
A. Why school buses in the US are yellow.
B. How school buses developed in the US.
C. How students in the US recognised school buses.
D. Why there are school buses for students in the US.
12. On a cold morning nine years ago, Steve Cortes and his wife were travelling in Ellijay, a tiny town of 1,600 in Georgia's Smoky Mountains. It was about time for breakfast as they came across the Cornerstone Café, only to find it packed. Just as they prepared to go elsewhere, one of the diners motioned(示意) them over. "We can make room," he said. Actually, several diners moved over until there was enough space for the couple to pull up two chairs at the end of a table.
Breakfast and friendship were served. "After an hour, we had made too many friends to count," Cortes wrote.
The hospitality(好客) may have surprised the Corteses, but Ellijay is famous in these parts for taking care of others. When a thunderstorm struck the town in July, dozens of residents were trapped in their homes by fallen trees. Without even being asked, neighbours offered them food and comfort. "This is the most amazing place I've ever lived! Every time I think about it, I actually get emotional," one woman wrote.
As the Apple Capital of Georgia, Ellijay has seen migrant farm workers from Mexico and Central America come to pick apples during the harvest season. The people of Ellijay have made room for these new arrivals. The Gilmer Learning Centre now teaches English as a second language. A charity fashion show and auction(拍卖) are also in the works, with the money intended for the farm families.
"I came to America from Mexico not knowing English, and I've always felt very welcomed by my classmates and the teachers in the community," says Maria Gonzalez Santos, 21, a student at the local community college.
Ellijay's spirit of acceptance has a way of staying with people. It happened to Steve Cortes and his wife too. They started off simply driving through the town many years ago, but they felt so welcomed that they ended up moving to Ellijay. They even opened a clothing store here.
1. Why are the Corteses mentioned in Paragraph 1
A. To prove the popularity of Ellijay.
B. To introduce the good business of the café.
C. To indicate the special features of the café.
D. To show Ellijay's attitude to newcomers.
2. What can be inferred from Paragraph 2 about Ellijay
A. It has large areas of forests. B. It has a friendly neighbourhood.
C. It is famous for its delicious food. D. It is often struck by natural disasters.
3. What might make Ellijay more attractive to migrant farm workers
A. Charity auction. B. Sightseeing tours.
C. Community spirit. D. Family get-togethers.
