Reading is a good hobby for all kinds of reasons.
First, reading is fun. You can always keep yourself happy if you like reading. You will never feel bored or tired.
Next, you can read a book almost anywhere—in a car, on a plane, or even in the bathroom. All you need is a book!
Another good reason for reading is that it is useful. If you read as a hobby, you will get better and better at it. And you will read faster and find it easier to understand what you read. As your reading skills improve, you will probably find your schoolwork becomes much better.
Some people say that reading is out of date. This is not true. You can read on computers, and the better you read, the better your computer skills will be.
Good readers may become writers too. They always have more things to write about.
If you wish to become a good reader, here are four important points to remember about speed of reading:
Knowing why you are reading—what you are reading to find out—will often help you to know whether to read quickly or slowly.
Some things should be read slowly throughout. Examples are instructions for making or doing something, solving math problems, and science and history books, which are full of important information. You must read such things slowly to remember each important idea.
Some things should be read quickly throughout. Examples are simple stories for enjoyment, letters from friends and news from local newspapers, which tell what was happening to friends and neighbors.
In some of your reading, you must change your speed from fast to slow or from slow to fast as you go along. You need to read certain pages quickly and then slow down and do more careful reading when you come to important ideas which must be remembered.
15.You can read a book _______.
A.almost anywhere B.when you are driving a car
C.only on a plane D.only when you feel bored er tired
16.Which of the following reasons is NOT true that reading is a good hobby
A.It is fun. B.You can read almost anywhere.
C.It is out of date. D.It can help you improve your computer skills.
17.According to the passage, your reading speed depends on _______.
A.how much time you have B.where you do the reading
C.the writer of the book D.what and why you are reading information
18.What is the writer trying to tell us according the last four paragraphs
A.How to be a good reader. B.How to read books quickly.
C.How to have fun by reading. D.How to choose your reading materials.
A good reader is very much like a driver. He must change his reading speed to fit his purpose(目的) and the material he is reading, just as a driver does to fit the road situation. A good reader may be able to read a thousand words per minute(WPM), but he won’t use that speed for everything he reads.
A good reader who is doing research(研究) reading in the library may read at the speed of 1,000 words per minute as he looks for materials for a report. But once he finds something that is useful to him, he may need to slow down to 100 WPM. A good reader may read newspaper and magazine articles at 600 WPM. But it may take him 150WPM to read his Science or Maths text. Just as a driver has a wide change of speed, so does a good reader.
19.According to the writer, good readers can ________.
A.read at 1,000 WPM B.spend more time reading
C.change the speed of reading as needed D.do research reading
20.The passage tells us that the speed of reading depends on ________.
a. the number of books
b. the purpose of reading
c. the time when you’re reading
d. the material that you’re reading
e. the place where you’re reading
A.a and b B.b and d C.b, c and d D.c and e
21.A good reader may use the highest speed of reading when ________.
A.he is trying to find materials for his report B.he is trying to work out a Maths problem
C.he is reading the material most useful to him D.he is reading in the library
22.The passage advises that a good driver should _________.
A.be able to drive at high speed B.be good at ________driving on a country road
C.be good at changing driving speed D.be able to find good materials
23.Which is the best title for this passage
A.The importance of reading fast B.The difference between driving and reading
C.The best way of fast reading D.A good reader and his reading speed

One of the best things to do in London, is a classic British pub quiz! The interesting entertainment of quiz nights always include: pictures, a music round and creative challenges so that everyone feels they can take part in. Pub owners say they hold quiz nights because everyone drinks like fish, so it is good business for them.
How does the quiz work A quiz master is in charge of the quiz and reads questions out loud. The questions are about things they usually don’t pay attention to or “trivia”. For example, you may be asked to answer what the oldest national park is in England. People answer questions in teams. There are usually several rounds and a quiz can go on for 2 to 3 hours!
The quiz covers different topics, including history, geography, science, sport, TV, music and more. In a recent survey, 1,000 people from all walks of life answered the pub quizzes on the Internet. More than half of the people didn’t know the answer to the question: “How many countries make up Great Britain ” About eighty percent people had no idea of the question: “What is the world’s largest desert ”
To win the pub quiz, you need to study. For example, make sure you know the names of the winners of sport matches and TV shows. Besides studying it’s also very important to choose your team. Try to have a mix of men and women, and no more than five people. Once you get your team together, always trust your first answer, don’t think about it too much.
In some pubs if you take part in the quiz, you can get free drinks. But if you’ve paid to be in the quiz, there is usually a prize. Most people only go for the fun of it!

Those from the north side of the village play against the people from the south side of the village. Almost the whole village take part in it. It lasts from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. If any side scores a goal before 6 p.m., the game will restart. If any side scores after 6 p.m., the game will be over. In ancient times, people usually solved disagreements through it. However, it becomes an interesting event in England.

“Well, I’m going to write a story about endangered animals for the newspaper. I think it will help with my writing if I go up to the mountains. I just won’t get a feel for nature if I stay in my apartment in the city.”
“Sure, I’ll go with you, " Paul said, “Don’t forget your camera.”
“I won’t.” Uncle King answered.
On Saturday morning, Uncle King and Paul got an early start. After they put up the tent, they sat down to relax. “It seems hard to believe that animals could be in danger in place as beautiful as this,” Paul said.
“You’re right,” Uncle King said. “That’s why my story is so important. In the past, uncontrolled hunting (捕猎) was the main reason for animal extinction (灭绝). But now, many wild animals in our country are protected by laws. These laws limit hunting.”
“Why are some animals still in danger now ” Paul asked.
“Some of their homes are destroyed (破坏) by pollution. Also, the land is used for buildings, farms, and highways. That leaves fewer places for animals to live. So some land has to be left as national parks for wildlife,” said Uncle King.
“I’m glad you invited me,” Paul said. “I just didn’t know how much animals depend on us. I think your story will help all of us.”
