The 36-year-old Jia Juntingxian was born in Pingxiang, Jiangxi Province, and was blind in both eyes due to congenital eye disease. She showed athletic talent since childhood and was selected as a track and field athlete by Jiangxi Disabled Persons’ Federation.
Although she can’t see the world, Jia breaks through the “immediate” obstacles again and again while running, letting the world see her. In her sports career, Jia has won 43 national and world-class sports medals. Among them, in 2016, she broke the world record and stood on the podium(领奖台)of the women’s T11-T13 4×100-meter relay event at the Rio Paralympics.
In 2017, Jia retired and chose to become a teacher at a special education school. Just a year ago, she found out that two young brothers, with visual impairments(视觉障碍), wanted to be an athlete. They had never attended a special education school and never achieved their athletic dream. Jia could only help them attend a local special education school. The experience made her realize that these children living in remote areas may have little knowledge of special education. Even she didn’t know about such schools until late into her education. As a result, she decided to become more involved with special education.
Changing from a Paralympic competitor to a special education teacher, Jia said that there is no discomfort, “Because I understand the students as well as myself and knows the inconveniences and difficulties of the children. I hope that every child is like a different seed. Through hard study, they can bravely realize their own life.”
Jia also has paid close attention to the rights and interests of disabled people. In 2021, Jia proposed the construction of audible traffic signals for blind people. Her advice to local authorities on dog management has resulted in more indoor public places allowing the disabled to enter with their assistance dogs. Jia and her husband founded a massage(按摩)shop and currently employ 16 visually impaired people, with an average monthly salary of 3500 yuan per person.
Jia always believes that the world is a circle, as long as the love of others is constantly passed on, the whole society will be full of love!

Banff National Park is home to an amazing wildlife population. But the busy Trans Canada Highway that cuts through the park is a hazard to the lovely animals. To address the problem, Banff first put-up wildlife fencing on either side of the highway to discourage animals from entering the busy road. Then, since 1996, they’ve opened six wildlife overpasses and 38 underpasses to help the animals cross the highway in safety. I was fortunate to visit Banff’s Red Earth Overpass with Trevor Kinley, the project manager with Parks Canada. He told me that so far, they have documented 10, 000 safe animal crossings on this overpass alone. “ Some animals have learned how to use the crossings much more quickly than others. Black bears are the fastest learners, followed by deer. Wolves and lions take the longest to work out how to use them, ” Kinley said, laughing. “ But those animals that are slower to adapt are usually more capable and determined at figuring out the safest way to cross those overpasses and underpasses. ”
There is some criticism (批评) that channeling so much wildlife into a few bridges and tunnels is like making a trap for the animals, offering big animals an easy meal on either side. “ But research has shown that this is not the case, ” Kinley assured me. “ There are no more killings around the crossings than there are anywhere else in the park. ”
Walking over the Trans Canada and then walking underneath through one of the tunnels, I was amazed to see the fresh tracks of black bears, wolves, deer and many kinds of smaller animals. Somehow, all these animal footprints made me so happy, knowing that all this wildlife was passing safely under and over the longest road in Canada.
Hopefully, the success of the wildlife crossings in Banff will continue to inspire similar solutions around the world, where human pressure on wildlife continues to grow.
8. Which of the following best explains “ hazard ” underlined in paragraph 1
A. Shelter. B. Message. C. Answer. D. Danger.
9. What does Trevor Kinley say about those wolves and lions
A. They are stupid animals. B. They are cautious learners.
C. They are very dangerous. D. They are good at adapting.
10. What are the critics worried about
A. There are too many bridges and tunnels. B. Many animals will not use the crossings.
C. More killings might happen at the crossings. D. Illegal hunting might be encouraged in the park.
11. How does the author feel at the end of the visit
A. Concerned. B. Disappointed. C. Shocked. D. Delighted.
【答案】8. D 9. B 10. C 11. D
根据画线词后“To address the problem, Banff first put-up wildlife fencing on either side of the highway to discourage animals from entering the busy road. Then, since 1996, they’ve opened six wildlife overpasses and 38 underpasses to help the animals cross the highway in safety. (为了解决这个问题,班夫首先在高速公路两边设置了野生动物围栏,阻止动物进入繁忙的道路。自1996年以来,他们已经开放了6个野生动物天桥和38个地下通道,以帮助动物安全通过公路。)”可推断,hazard与Danger是同义词。故选D项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“‘But those animals that are slower to adapt are usually more capable and determined at figuring out the safest way to cross those overpasses and underpasses. (但那些适应速度较慢的动物通常更有能力,也更有决心找出最安全的方式穿越天桥和地下通道。)”可推断,Trevor Kinley认为狼和狮子是因为太谨慎才适应得比较慢,故选B项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“There is some criticism (批评) that channeling so much wildlife into a few bridges and tunnels is like making a trap for the animals, offering big animals an easy meal on either side.(有人批评说,把这么多野生动物引入几座桥和几条隧道,就像给动物设了陷阱,给大型动物提供了方便的食物。)” 可知,批评者担心的是动物集中穿过这么几个通道时,许多弱小的动物可能会沦为其他动物的盘中餐。故选C项。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“Somehow, all these animal footprints made me so happy,(不知怎的,这些动物脚印让我很开心。)” 可知作者在最后是很开心的,故选D项。

Researchers from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) said they have completed the most detailed virtual reality (VR) map of the universe ever created. The map permits users to “travel through space and time”. With the help of VR headsets, users can visit places in the universe virtually. The software program is called the Virtual Reality Universe Project, or VIRUP.
The researchers said they combined the largest data set of information about the universe to create the 3D experience.People can see the virtual universe through VR equipment or with 3D glasses in a theater. Jean-Paul Kneib, the director of EPFL’ s astrophysics laboratory (天体物理学实验室) , said that one of the best parts of the project was putting together parts of the data set “into one framework”. “You can see the universe at different scales一nearby us, around the Earth, around the solar system, at the Milky Way level,” Kneib said.
VIRUP produces images that can appear as close as one meter or seemingly at an infinite (无限的) distance. It aims to get many kinds of visitors. This includes both scientists looking to get a virtual picture of the data they collect and people seeking a new way to explore the universe. There are different versions of the software. A smaller version is aimed at the public and a larger one is meant for scientists or astronomy experts.
The project combines information from eight databases. It includes at least 4,500 known exoplanets (外星行星) ,tens of millions of galaxies (星系) and hundreds of millions of space objects. More than 1.5 billion light producing objects from the Milky Way alone are included. The researchers expect to continually add data, meaning the virtual experience will keep getting better with time. Future databases could include space rocks called asteroids in our solar system or farther objects in our galaxy.
Yves Revaz, an astrophysicist of the EPFL, called the system “a very efficient way of visiting all the different scales that compose our universe.” Revaz added: “A very important part of this project is that it’s a first step toward treating much larger data sets which are coming.”
12. What can people do through the software program
A. Visit the Milky Way for real.
B. Travel to the past through time.
C. View the universe with VR equipment.
D. Explore the formation of the solar system.
13. What do we know about VIRUP from paragraph 3
A. It allows users to download 3D images.
B. It combines different databases into a whole.
C. It is accessible to both astronomy experts and common people.
D. It guides scientists to adjust the distance for detecting objects.
14. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. The limitations of the project. B. The signifcance of the project.
C. The different versions of the project. D. The huge data source of the project.
15. What is Yves Revaz’s attitude towards VIRUP
A. Negative. B. Positive. C. Uncaring. D. Doubtful
【答案】12. C 13. C 14. D 15. B

I was not liking it much here. At this new school, nobody knew me. As I was shy, I had difficulty making friends and felt lonely all the time.
One day, when I was sitting in my seat, a girl came to me and introduced herself. It was Vivian. She smiled at me and asked if I wanted to have lunch with her. That day, we spent a great time together. Slowly, we became best friends.
In the coming month of October, it was my best friend’s birthday. I and other classmates in the school had planned a day out for her.
We all decided to take her to a nearby picnic spot (地点) in the afternoon and give her a surprise party. Everybody contributed a little to the cake and snacks. After school, we took her to the picnic spot. She cut the cake and we all enjoyed the snacks. After everybody had eaten, we all decided to enjoy the boat ride.
It was a pleasant day. The lake was small but beautiful. We were all singing together and cheering up. In the clear blue water of the lake, we could see the colorful fishes swimming rapidly. There were also ducks adding to the beauty of the scene (风景).
Everybody started clapping looking at those pretty birds. Vivian also became quite excited. Just when she was trying to touch the ducks, she lost her balance. Before anyone could do anything, she fell into the lake.

Luckily, everything was OK with Vivian. However, she was cold and shaking with fright. We immediately took Vivian to her house. When her parents heard what had happened they were shaken. The doctor came to see her and said that there was no need to worry. Vivian was all right. She looked at me with tears and told her parents about how I jumped into the water to save her.
I told Vivian about my swimming classes in my old school and promised to be there for her in any difficult situation. I also reminded her of how she used to come to my house to teach me when I was ill and that she was my best friend, and I just did the same for her today. Her parents also got emotional and hugged me. Vivian and I became true best friends. From that day, we have supported and helped each other in every possible way.
In 2021 Jia proposed the construction of audible traffic signals for blind people. Her advice to local authorities on dog management has resulted in more indoor public places allowing the disabled to enter with their assistance dogs. Jia and her husband founded a massage(按摩)shop and currently employ 16 visually impaired people, with an average monthly salary of 3500 yuan per person.

C. More killings might happen at the crossings. D. Illegal hunting might be encouraged in the park.
11. How does the author feel at the end of the visit
A. Concerned. B. Disappointed. C. Shocked. D. Delighted.

A. Negative. B. Positive. C. Uncaring. D. Doubtful

My family used to live in London. But then a few years ago my father got transferred (调动) and we came to a small town in Scotland. Everything was new here. The neighborhood, and the school.
Everyone was shocked to see this. Without losing a minute, I jumped into the water. Nobody knew but I had learned to swim in my previous school.
