Part 1: Text
While John Gilbert was in hospital, he asked his doctor to tell him whether his operation had been successful, but the doctor refused to do so. The following day, the patient asked for a bedside telephone. When he was alone, he telephoned the hospital exchange and asked for Doctor Millington. When the doctor answered the phone, Mr Gilbert said he was inquirin. Last week at a dinner-party, the hostess asked me to sit next to Mrs Rumbold. Mrs Rumbold was a large, unsmiling lady in a tight black dress. She did not even look up when I took my seat beside her. Her eyes were fixed on her plate and in a short time, she was busy eating. I tried to make conversation.
' A new play is coming to" The Globe" soon,' I said. 'Will you be seeing it ' ' No,' she answered. 'Will you be spending your holidays abroad this year ' I asked. ' No,' she answered.
' Will you be staying in England ' I asked. ' No,' she answered.
In despair, I asked her whether she was enjoying her dinner.
' Young man,' she answered,' if you ate more and talked less, we would both enjoy our dinner !'

'Young man,' she answered, 'If you ate more and talked less ,we would both enjoy our dinner!'
相当于 But, you are talking too much. So both of us are not enjoying our dinner.

结构非常简洁,形成鲜叫对比
Everyone wants to earn more and work less.

Part 4: Grammar&Difficult points
if引导的条件句
1.真实条件句:对将来可能发生的事情的假设,主句中用将来时或祈使句,从句用现代时。主将从现:
If he is out, I' ll call tomorrow.
如果他不在的话我明天再打电话吧。
You'll miss the train if you don' t hurry.
要是你不抓紧的话,你就会错过火车的。
2.非真实条件句(虚拟语气)
在英语中语气分为三类:陈述语气、祈使语气、虚拟语气。
虚拟语气:
如果我们所说的不是事实,也不是要求、命令、劝告等,而只是一种假设、愿望、建议或是一种实现不了的空想就用虚拟语气
(1)与现在事实相反
l) 如果你去展览的话你会喜欢的。[eks 'b ( )n]
If you went to the exhibition you would enjoy it.
2) 要是你现在看到他的话你根本认不出来他。
If you saw him now you wouldn't recognize him.
(2)与将来事实相反,或者将来不可能发生的

1)明天万一下雨,我们就取消比赛。
If it should rain tomorrow,we should call off the game.
2)要是你明天来,我们就开会。
If you came tomorrow,we would have the meeting.
