Classic Chinese cartoons bring joy to most of us. Last month, three classic Chinese cartoons came out in the cinemas again. Let’s see how old artists put Chinese culture and art into the cartoons to make them classic.
The Legend of Sealed Book tells the story of the boy Dansheng. He practices great tricks(魔法)from the book to help people. The film uses face painting from the Peking Opera. Little Tadpole Looking for Mummy is China’s first ink(墨水)wash cartoon. Artists drew all the animals, plants and rocks with ink and brushes. They learned from the great artist Qi Baishi. Though it’s only about 15 minutes long, it took lots of work. Artists drew everything by hand. One second of the cartoon needed 24 pictures! Fifty-nine years later, the 2020 cartoon series Fog Hills of Five Elements also uses this style.
Pigsy Eats Watermelon is China’s first paper cutting cartoon. This 15-minute cartoon came out in 1958. Artists cut Zhu Bajie out of colored paper. Environmental impact(影响)of online shopping
In the past few years, the way we shop has changed greatly. We used to buy things in traditional shops or in department stores. Now, customers are increasingly buying online, where they can order whatever they want directly to their door with the touch of a smartphone or the click of a mouse.
But what is the impact of all this online shopping on the environment You might think that online shopping is greener than in-store shopping. After all, an online store doesn’t use the electricity that a traditional store might use. Products are often delivered(递送)to several homes at once, so you would think this way of shopping must cut down on the carbon(碳)footprint.
However, the reality is not as simple as imagined. Many home deliveries fail the first time and the driver has to make a second or third attempt to deliver the products. Customers who choose speedy delivery or those who buy single products from different places also help increase the carbon footprint.
The carbon footprint also goes up if the customer chooses to return the product. A study in Germany showed that one in three products bought online are returned.
Clothing is one product that has high return rates(率). Unlike in a walk-in store, the online shopper can’t try things on before buying. So, companies offer free returns to make it easier for shoppers to buy the same clothing in different sizes and colors. Customers try them at home, keep one and return the rest of them. However, when clothes are returned, they are not always put back for sale, because many companies have found it cheaper to simply throw away the returned clothes. Then the returned clothes, which might be in perfect condition, end up in landfills.
So, online shopping isn’t as green as people might think. That last kilometer to your door is costly, for companies and for the environment. There is some positive news, electric delivery vehicles (车辆) will probably help lower the carbon footprint. However, the question of how to deal with returns nicely and without waste is still a challenge that many companies have not wanted to face. As more and more online shoppers begin to realize what companies are doing, there is increasing pressure(压力) for companies to take responsibility for the environmental impact of their activities.
40.The word “ attempt” in Paragraph 3 probably means “________” .
A.try B.choice C.decision D.progress
41.The writer takes the example of online clothing shopping in Paragraph 5 to ________.
A.stress the importance of online shopping
B.compare walk-in shopping with online shopping
C.show online shopping can harm the environment
D.offer some ways to return products while shopping online
42.What can we learn from the passage
A.An online store usually uses a lot of electricity.
B.Speedy delivery might make the carbon footprint go up.
C.Clothing online is one product that has low return rates.
D.Two in three products bought online are returned in Germany.
43.The writer probably agrees that ________.
A.it’s environmental-friendly to buy goods online
B.it’s necessary for companies to cut down on carbon footprint
C.it’s a good idea for companies to throw away the returned products
D.it’s helpful to deal with the returns nicely by electric delivery vehicles
When I was a foreign teacher in China, every day I taught English to my students and they taught me about China. One day the topic turned to saying “I love you”. I was shocked to learn that not one of my students had said this to their mothers, nor had their mothers said it to them. “Does your mom love you ” “Of course,” they answered.
“How do you know ” was my logical question. They responded that their moms cooked and always told them what they were doing wrong to show their caring. I was stunned. So mom’s cooking and criticizing read out as “I love you”. “Then how do you say ‘I love you’ to her ” They agreed that getting good grades, followed by good jobs would be how they showed their love.
I come from a culture where most people are expressive enough, so I repeated these queries in classes over time. Gradually, I began to get different response. Some of them had exchanged those sentiments with their moms.
One of my favorite stories of change came from a girl. When she came home from university, her mother met her at the door and hugged(拥抱)her. This had never happened before, but her mom said, “Now that you have gone, I have more time to myself. I noticed that in some places, mothers and children hug each other and I decided it was a good idea and that I would begin hugging you.”
In my family, we all say “I love you” a lot. While it is true that we often say the words without having great depth of feelings at that moment, it is almost like a blessing we give each other. Those three little words carry a world of meaning, even when said as a greeting, but most especially if they are the last words we say to or hear from those we love.

47.What’s the main idea of the passage
A.Say “I love you” more to your family. B.Say “I love you” a lot to Chinese people.
C.Say “I love you” as a greeting to others. D.Say “I love you” without great depth of feelings.
Supermarkets are trying out new computers that make shopping carts more intelligent (智能的). They will help shoppers find paper cups or toilet soap, and keep a record of the bill.
The touch-screen devices (装置) are on show at the Food Marketing Institute’s exhibition here this week, “These devices are able to create value and get you around the store quicker,” said Michael Alexander, manager of Springboard Retail Networks Company, which makes a smart cart computer called the Concierge.
Canadian stores will test the Concierge in July. A similar device, IBM’s “Shopping Buddy”, has recently been test-marketed at Stop & Shop stores in Massachusetts.
Neither device tells you how many fat grams (克) or calories are in your cart, but they will quickly show you items on sale. The idea is to make it easier for people to buy, not to have second thoughts that maybe you should put something back on the shelf.
People can use a home computer to make their shopping lists. Once at the store, a shopper can use a preferred customer card to start a system that will organize the trip around the store. If you’re looking for toothpicks, you type in the word or pick it from a list, and a map will appear on the screen showing where you are and where you can find them.
The device also keeps a record of what you buy. When you’re finished, the device figures out your bill. Then you go to the checker or place your card into a self-checkout stand and pay.
The new computerized shopping assistants (助手) don’t come cheap. The Buddy devices will cost the average store about $160,000, and the Concierge will cost stores about $500 for each device.

If and when you are considering getting a new pet, the first thing to do is to consider yourself and your lifestyle. Never buy a pet out of a sudden idea. Animal shelters (庇护所) worldwide are full of wonderful pets whose owners got them but later realize they could not take care of them. Learn more about how to choose the right pet below. Not all pets are the same. Some pets are more self-sufficient than others — certain pets such as dogs require a lot of attention, others such as turtles can go days (even weeks) without food and water, so you should think carefully before you bring home a pet. You can find books and articles on the Internet to help you select the right pet, but these questions are a good place to start: How much time and energy are you able to give a pet ● Are the family members all busy working/studying ● Is there anyone who can look after the animal when you all are away from home What is your living situation ● Do you live in a flat or a house ● Have you got a fenced yard ● ___▲___ What ages are your family members ● Are they too young to be left alone with a pet ● Are they old enough to help take care of the animal ● Are there elderly people who may be uncomfortable to an overactive pet Do any family members have allergies or fears about certain types of pets Is the family in agreement about owning a pet Where will the pet spend its time Asking yourself these questions will help you decide if a dog or cat is a better choice, or if a bird or rabbit would better suit your lifestyle. Once your choice has not been narrowed down, come talk to us or e-mail us at petchoice@. Our staff are experts in helping you choose the right pet for your situation.

Hi, my name is Wang Jun. Do you want to know about my staying in America Well, to tell you the truth, it is really an eye-opening experience here.
In China, I had English classes five times a week since Grade Five. But I didn’t know textbook English could be so different from everyday English until I came to Hotchkiss School, Connecticut. When I first studied English, I was told to say “I’m fine.” when people say “How are you ” But in the USA, I found that people say “I’m good.” or “I’m tired.”
One day, someone greeted(问候)me with “What’s up ” It made me confused. I thought for a moment and then smiled because I didn’t know what to say.
Since then, I have learnt more and more differences between Chinese and American cultures. To my surprise, American girls spend a lot of time in the burning sun getting a tan(晒黑的肤色). In China, girls try every possible way to keep their skin white.
American students are hard-working like Chinese students. In China, schoolwork is almost everything, so we study hard and that’s it. “Colour, colour, colour!” are the words of the artist Eric Carle. Eric is like the king in the world of children’s books. He has written over 70 children’s books. His most famous book The Very Hungry Caterpillar, is common on children’s bookshelves all over the world. What most people don’t know is that Eric also makes art for adults, which is called “ArtArt”. People didn’t know about it, because he didn’t show it to the public until he was 84 years old!
Like Eric’s children’s books, his “ArtArt” is full of bright and clear colour. He says that he loves colour so much because he missed it during the war in Germany. Eric was born in New York in 1929, but moved to Germany with his family when he was 6. When he was 10, World War II began. He noticed that all the houses and buildings in his town were painted grey, brown or dark green. It was a sad time, and it seemed like there was no colour anywhere.
At the end of the war, “when colour came back,” Eric explains, “I just loved it so much. I keep saying that I wish our eyes could see more colour. Colour is a very important part of my work.”
That’s true. Eric paints bright colours on Paper, cuts out shapes, and then glues them onto another piece of paper. This method is called collage (拼贴画). In fact, it is what led Eric to his “ArtArt”.
Eric’s “ArtArt” includes large collages as well as paintings, photographs and even costurmes.
In all these works, he uses all kinds of colours—everything from purple to light green to orange.
Now that’s a lot of colour!

Can animals be artistic Some experts think so. Painting and music are part of efforts to keep animals happy at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo. Zookeepers there believe that animals need enrichment(娱乐活动) just like people do.
A sloth bear(长毛熊) called Francois is one of the National Zoo’s artists. He began his artistic career two years ago. Francois has a very unusual way to paint. He uses his breath to paint. His zookeeper, Stacey Tabellario, says that although the technique may look strange, it is actually a very natural behavior for sloth bears. They have got big lungs(肺) and they can breathe out a huge amount of air. The zookeepers fill one of those tubes(管子) full of paint and ask them to breathe through it. And they blow all of the paint onto the canvas(画布), making the really cool paintings.
Animal artists come in all shapes and sizes at the Zoo. They use many kinds of techniques to create their works of art. Apes(猩猩) use paintbrushes. Many use their paws or claws—much like a human painter would use his or her hands.
Stacey Tabellario says Francois seems to enjoy expressing himself through his art. “When I set up the materials for painting activity, he comes and sits next to them and waits until we are ready to start painting. He does that every time. I also see where his eyes go. He does see the paints come out of the tube and land on the canvas.” But not every animal wants to paint.
Music is another part of the arts enrichment program. Physically and mentally interesting activities are an important part of the daily care of the animals. Trainers have a set of tools, from tablet computers(平板电脑) to small toys.
Kenton Kerns says the program helps the animals and the zookeepers in many ways. Every interaction between keepers and their animals creates some sort of connections. The one-of-a-kind works of art created by the animals are popular with zoo visitors. Many are sold at the zoo’s fundraising events.
83.What can we learn from the second paragraph
