人教新目标(Go for it)版 英语八年级上册 Unit 7 Will people have robots 阅读理解 专练
Let us suppose (假设) it is now about A.D.2060. People go to the moon every day. It is as easy to take a holiday on the moon today as it was for the people in 1960 to take a holiday in Europe.
What are people eating now People are still eating food. But many foods now come in pill (药丸) form. Farming, of course, is very highly developed. Very few people have to work on the farm. People are now largely vegetarians (素食者) and we are healthier both in our bodies and in our minds, and we don't have any diseases (疾病). No one has to be ill any more.

What will the car be like in the future Maybe the car can drive itself.
About 40 years ago, scientists from the United States started to make self-driving cars. The most famous one was made by Google in 2009. There are cameras and radars (雷达) on the top of the car. They let the computer in the car draw a 3D map of the environment (环境). Chinese scientists have also successfully made a self-driving car. The car made a trip from Changsha to Wuhan.
Is a self-driving car safe A recent (最近的) study shows that robots make safer drivers than people. If only 10% of cars on the street are self-driving, they will save 1,000 lives every year. If 90% of vehicles (交通工具) are self-driving, 21,700 lives will be saved a year. But a self-driving car is expensive and each costs about $100,000. So it is impossible to be very popular in the near future.

If cars had wings, they could fly and that just might happen, beginning in 2011.The company Terrafugia, based in Woburn, Massachusetts, says it plans to make such a car-plane called “Transition”, to customers(顾客) by the end of 2012. “It’s the next ‘wow’ vehicle,”said Terrafugia vice president Richard Gersh. “Anybody can buy a Ferrari, but as we say, Ferraris don’t fly.”
The car-plane has wings that unfold for flying—a process the company says takes one minute-and fold back up for driving. A runway is still needed to take off and land.
The Transition is being marketed more as a plane that drives than a car that flies, although it is both. The company has been working with FAA to meet aircraft regulations, and with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to meet vehicle safety regulations.
The company is aiming to sell the Transition to private pilots as an easier and cheaper way to fly. They say it saves you the trouble from trying to find another mode of transportation to get to and from airports: You drive the car to the airport and then you’re good to go.When you land, you fold up the wings and hit the road. There are no expensive parking fees because you don’t have to store it at an airport—you leave it in the car park at home.
The car-plane is designed to fly under 10,000 feet. It has a maximum take-off weight of 1,430 pounds, including fuel and passengers.
The Transition’s price tag: $194,000, But there may be something else you need to pay, like a radio, transponder or GPS and so on.
So far, the company has more than 70 orders. “We’re working very closely with them, but there are still some remaining steps,” Brown said.
9.We can learn from the first paragraph that _________.

Hi,
This is the year 2070. I have just turned 50, but I look like a person of 85. I have serious kidney (肾脏) problems because I don’t have enough water to drink. I’m afraid I don’t have much time left to live. I am already one of the oldest people in this society.
I remember when I was five years old, everything was very different. There were lots of trees in the parks. I could enjoy a shower for half an hour. At that time, women had beautiful hair. Now, we have to shave (剃) our heads to keep them clean without the use of water.
I remember there were “Save Water” warnings in many public places, but nobody paid attention. We believed water would last forever. Now, all the rivers and lakes are either dry or polluted. Water is much more expensive than gold and diamonds.
Without water, almost all factories are closed. Most people lose their jobs. Those who have a job work in desalination (脱盐) factories and are paid with drinkable water rather than with money.
In the past, doctors suggested adults drink eight glasses of water a day. Nowadays, I am only allowed half a glass. Most people are weak. Young people in their early 20s look as if they were in their 40s.
Because there are few trees, we don’t have enough oxygen. We have to pay for air. The air isn’t very fresh, but at least we can breathe. Poor people die young. The average (平均的) life expectancy is 40 years.
When my son asks me about my childhood, I tell him about how pleasant it was to fish in the rivers and how healthy people were. When he asks, “Why is there no clean water now ” I feel guilty. I belong to the generation who turned a blind eye to all the warnings.
I wish this letter could go back in time and that it would make people living in the 2020s truly understand the importance of saving water.
Best,
Natalie
