Jane is eight years old and Billy is ten. They often fight at home. “Mom, Billy doesn’t give my book back!” “It’s not yours. It’s mine!” I don’t know how to stop them at first, but then I have an idea.
I give them some “punishments” when they fight. But those “punishments” are not really punishments—just nice things for each other. For example, when Jane first fights, she must clean Billy’s room. When Billy first fights, he must give Jane a hug(拥抱). They must do many things like this for each other.
I write these “punishments” on a round board(圆形板). When they fight, they must run (转动)the board and get their “punishments”.
Jane and Billy think this game is great fun and it works well. Now, they get along fine. When children do something wrong, we can do this kind of interesting game to let them know how to be nice to each other.

Some language students have difficulty remembering words. They think that something is wrong with their brains. In fact, that’s not the problem. The key is to know how to remember the words effectively.
To remember words better, you need to first understand how memory works. There are two kinds of memory: short-term and long-term. When you see, hear, or read something, it goes first into short-term memory. But short-term memory lasts for only a few seconds. You will only remember something longer if it goes into long-term memory. Your long-term memory is like a very big library with many books, and this “library” needs to be organized. When you put away a book—or memory—you can’t just leave it anywhere. If you want to find it again you have to put it in a certain place.
So, how can you put a word into long-term memory The answer is mnemonics—to work with the word and remember the word in new ways. You can do this by making a new sentence with the word. Even better, you can invent a little story about the word, with people or places that you know. Another way is to make a picture in your mind with the word. For example, if the word is “height”, you can think of the tallest person you know and try to guess his or her height. All these activities are good ways to remember words. They make the meanings of words stronger in your long-term memory, and they give a way to find a word when you need it.
