UNIT 4
NATURAL DISASTERS
Give a presentation on natural disasters
To discuss the natural disasters you know
To learn steps of preparing for a presentation on natural disasters
To give a presentation on natural disasters to your class
What kind of natural disasters can you think of
tsunami
typhoon
landslide
snowslide
/hurricane
earthquake
tornado
volcanic eruption
wildfire
lightning thunder
drought
flood
Work in groups of three or four. Choose one of the natural disasters above and brainstorm answers to the questions.
Understanding the disaster
Are there any known causes of the disaster
What can be done to prevent it
Wildfires are usually caused by human and natural factors (lightning, etc.).
Forest managers should be hired to protect the forest and people should be educated about prevention of forest fires.
Earthquakes are caused by tectonic plates shifting.
What are the possible effects of the disaster
What can be done to prepare for it
Check your home for areas that may be weaker in an earthquake. Also look at your things; for example, furniture such as a wardrobe which is not attached to a wall may fall easily, and glass on a high shelf could be dangerous. Also find the safest area too.
Preparing for the disaster
Keep some supplies at home, such as food and water, a torch, radio and first-aid kit, as an earthquake can affect access to basic things. Always have a plan, and practice for what you will do when there is an earthquake. Some knowledge of basic medical procedures may also be very useful.
In the event of a disaster
What can you do to stay safe during the disaster
What kind of help do survivors need
Don’t panic! Remember your plan and follow it calmly. Take cover in the safest area, perhaps under a strong door frame or table. Use your supplies and stay in contact with others so they know you are OK. Keep an eye on and help the vulnerable, such as old people, young children and pets.
Which questions do you not know the answers to
Which ones do you need more information on
Use the Internet or your school library to find out more.
Research
Put together a presentation using the information you have gathered. Use the tips to help you.
Organise
Start your presentation with a “hook” (a story or fact to catch the attention of your listeners).
On Monday, 5 December 20XX, 600 people disappeared when…
Reduce your ideas to three main points to help listeners remember what you say.
So always remember to drop, cover, and hold on…
Prepare visual aids for your presentation (photos, charts, tables, etc.).
In 2016 in Alberta, Canada, a wildfire destroyed over 2,000 houses and became one of the most expensive natural disasters in Canada’s history. Wildfires are caused when forests are left to grow and get too dry. They can become dry when there is a drought or when there is not enough snow to keep them wet. Then a person who might be hiking or camping can start a fire or lightning can strike a tree which also causes a fire.
Because the forest is dry, other trees quickly catch fire. Wildfires can spread very quickly and many people, including firefighters, are caught by surprise when a fire races over a hill towards them. The best way to prevent a wildfire destroying your life is to pay close attention to the news and be ready to evacuate very quickly if authorities say it’s time. A house or car can be replaced, but lives are far more precious.
Give a group presentation to your class.
Present
Thousands of people in Northern California were told to leave their homes in November 2018 because of spreading wildfires. Officials said the fire started as a result of lightning strikes. This is just one of the many wildfires that happened in 2018. Then how much do you know about wildfires
Wildfires are usually caused by human and natural factors (like lightning, etc.). When wildfires begin, they may threaten people and their personal property. So we should try our best to prevent them. Forest managers should be hired to protect the forest and people should be educated about prevention of forest fires.
What should we do when a wildfire begin We should first inform people nearby and evacuate them to safe places. We should stay calm and move to safe places as soon as possible. After the wildfire, we should provide survivors shelters to rest and medical help for the injured.
1. Choose a natural disaster that interests you the most.
2. Gather information about it (the cause, the effect, the safety instructions...).
3. Make a poster to introduce the disaster.
