An 80-year-old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 45-year-old highly educated son. Suddenly a crow perched (栖息) on their window.
The father asked his son, “What is this ” The son replied, “It is a crow.” After a few minutes, the father asked his son for the second time, “What is this ” The son said, “Father, I have just now told you that it’s a crow!”
After a little while, the old father again asked his son for the third time, “What is this ”
At this time some expression of irritation (恼怒) was felt in the son’s tone when he said to his father with a rebuff (生硬回绝). “It’s a crow, a crow.” A little while later, the father again asked his son the fourth time, “What is this ”
This time, the son shouted at his father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again, although I have told you so many times ‘IT IS A CROW’ Are you not able to understand this ” A little while later the father went to his room and came back with an old tattered(发皱的) diary, which he had maintained since his son was born.
On opening a page, he asked his son to read that page.
When the son read it, the following words were written in the diary:
Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa when a crow was sitting on the window. My son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question. I did not at all feel irritated but I rather felt affection for my innocent son.

What the theme of the writing is (a good father is better than a hundred teachers)
3. Clues to emotions:

Especially his father’s unlimited patience impressed itself on his memory. Not only had his father patiently answered his same innocent questions countless times, but had patiently helped him with his lessons countless evenings, patiently accompanied him to and from school countless days, and patiently tended him during his illness countless nights. It suddenly occurred to him that it was his father’s endless patience and selfless love that had made him what he was today. But today the way he repaid his old father was shocking, incrideble, and shameful. (情绪变化→唤醒记忆→反思羞愧)
But it was then that lots of good and happy memories of his childhood were brought back to him.
But the diary brought lots of good and happy memories of his childhood back to him.
But many good and happy memories of his childhood flooded over him.
Paragraph 2:
Feeling ashamed, the son got down on his knees before his father. “ Dad, I’m terribly sorry I’ve lost my temper and shouted at you. I shouldn’ have been so impatient and rude. I was wrong.” He cried bitterly, “I’ll never treat you like that again and I’ll love you forever. ” Looking at his regretful well-educated son, the wise old man breathed a sigh of relief. The same repeated question served as a moral touchstone (试金石) of his son’s love for him. His tattered diary also served as a timely reminder of his love for his son. As the old English saying goes, a good father is better than a hundred teachers.(道歉→评论→点明主题)惠州一中 2023 届高二下第一次考试

2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. Beijing has become the first city to host both Summer and
Winter Olympic Games, and it, together with Zhangjiakou is the host of the grand 2022
Olympic Winter Games.
As for your problems, I’d like to give you two suggestions on how to learn Chinese well.
First, speak a little Chinese every day. The best way to learn any new language is just to
speak it. Second, attend a Chinese class or discussion group. After all, language learning
environments are of great importance.
If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to write to me.
Yours,
Li Hua

In recent years, Myanmar has opened its doors to western tourism. This once-closed state in Southeast Asia is a gold mine for those who enjoy the ancient Buddhist culture of the region. Compared to its neighbors, the landscape of Myanmar has been left largely undamaged. There are so many reasons why Myanmar is amazing and has been rated one of the top Asian tourist destinations for 2019. Here are some of its scenic spots:
Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon
As far as pagodas are concerned, this is one of the most respected in Myanmar. This massive325-foot Buddhist pagoda is surrounded by smaller shiny-gold pagodas. It is believed that some of the hairs of Gautama Buddha are well-preserved in here. The Shwedagon Pagoda is a must-see destination on your traveling schedule.
Long Neck Tribe of the Hill Country
These women—who are identified by their long necks that are stretched by brass neck coils(项圈)from an early age—have become world-famous. You’ll find this tribe in the mountainous north of the country, especially in Chin state. This custom dates back to ancient times when tribesmen—who were always at war with neighboring tribes—put neck coils on their women to prevent them from being taken as prisoners of war. These days, the long-necked women are used to seeing foreigners, who make the long journey to this isolated region of Myanmar for the purpose of seeing them.
Mandalay City
This dusty, hot center of trading and commerce for Myanmar is both fascinating and exciting.You’11 never find a shortage of things to do here. Temples. Medieval-era castles. Buildings from the country’s colonial British past. There are over 600 monasteries and nunneries in the Holy Hills of Sagaing, which overlook Mandalay. The city also has an exciting nightlife which will be an attraction for many.

CPR saves lives. It can really change someone's life, as I found out for myself three years ago.
On October 14, 2009, my mom had an accident while playing soccer and was taken to hospital. The next morning, I was told that my mom had had a cardiac arrest. I later learned that two players on the opposing team kept breathing air into my mother's mouth and pressing her chest for seven minutes, as they waited for the ambulance to arrive. My mom stayed in the hospital for only ten days. I know that I am very lucky to have my mom here, because most people who have cardiac arrests and do not receive CPR within the first six minutes die.
My mom has used this experience to spread the word about CPR. She joined the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Support Group, which was set up to help survivors and their families through a difficult experience. The support group also takes part in the Heart Walk every year, raising money for the American Heart Association. And she attends Lobby Day each year, convincing the New York State Legislature to pass a law that would make basic CPR and first-aid training a graduation requirement for high school students.
This task is not as difficult as it may first appear to be. Every student in New York State must take health class in order to graduate. Just one or two days of health class each year will ensure that every student in the state will learn this important skill. This training is also nearly free. There is no need for a professional CPR instructor because the American Heart Association has online videos that show the newest techniques in CPR. Also, most local EMS services will lend training models to schools.
My mom and her fellow survivors go to a high school each year to talk to the students about the importance of learning CPR. This training will not get you the official CPR certification ( 证书), but as my mom says, “You don't need a little card to save someone's life.”
4. How does the author feel about the two players
A. A bit sorry. B. Quite concerned. C. Deeply grateful. D. Rather frightened.
5. In what way did the author's mother change
A. She made efforts to improve CPR. B. She became an active CPR supporter.
C. She paid more attention to her health. D. She realized the key importance of law.
6. What does Paragraph 4 say about the CPR training for students
A. It may be turned down by a lot of students. B. It will become a graduation requirement.
C. It requires little time and money. D. It is difficult and dangerous.
7. What might the author's mother agree with
A. CPR skills are more important than CPR certifications.
B. Every graduate should get an official CPR certification.
C. It is challenging for many students to master CPR skills.
D. High schools should make a special card for CPR learners.
C
Maths anxiety may be causing a national crisis, Cambridge University researchers have said, as they find that one in ten children suffer from anxiety at the subject.
Researchers surveyed 1, 700 British pupils aged 8 to 13 about their feelings towards the subject. They found 10% of children suffered from maths anxiety. Other feelings caused by maths included fear and anger, while physical symptoms included a racing heart or struggling to catch breath.
“The project studied students' attitudes towards maths because of what could be called a maths crisis in the UK, ” researchers said. “Many children and adults experience feelings of anxiety, fear or discomfort when they face maths. This may be leading to a low level of maths in the country. ” The number of adults with functional maths skills equal to a GCSE (英国普通中等教育证书) grade C has dropped from 26% in 2003 to only 22% in 2011, according to the survey. At the same time, only 57% of the children achieved the same level in functional maths skills.
Dr. Denes Szucs, a professor at Cambridge's Centre for Neuroscience (神经科学) in Education said that there is a misunderstanding that only low performing children suffer from math anxiety. “This is a common misunderstanding that we have seen in decision makers, ” he said. “They assume people are anxious about maths because they are poor achievers. ” In fact, more than 77% of children with high levels of maths anxiety are normal to high achievers. Dr. Szucs went on, “Probably their maths anxiety will go unnoticed because their performance is good. But they are very worried and in the long term their performance is limited. This is a real danger here: these are children who are completely able to do maths at a normal level, but may keep away from it because they feel anxious. ” The research also found that girls have higher levels of maths anxiety than boys.
John's Hillman, director of education at the Nuffield Foundation said, “Mathematical achievement is valuable, as a foundation for many other subjects and as an important predictor of future academic learning, job hunting and even health. Maths anxiety can seriously influence students' performance in both primary and secondary schools. ”
8.What can we learn from the survey conducted by the Cambridge University researchers
A. Girls suffer lower levels of maths anxiety than boys.
B. Only low performing children suffer from maths anxiety.
C. Children with maths anxiety will suffer both physically and mentally.
D. Most children with high levels of maths anxiety usually perform badly at the subject.
9. Why did the researchers study students' attitudes towards maths
A. Many children are suffering from maths anxiety.
B. They want to help improve students' academic performance.
C. Maths anxiety may cause great damage to children's development.
D. Both children and adults experience maths anxiety, causing a national maths crisis.
10. How does the author prove there may be a national maths crisis in the UK in paragraph 3
A. Providing data. B. Giving examples. C. Giving definition. D. Analyzing and reasoning.
11. What question could possibly be talked about after the last paragraph
A. How can students learn maths well
B. How can maths anxiety be reduced
C. How does anxiety influence students' mental health
D. How can children realize the importance of learning maths
D
Doctors in hospital emergency rooms often see accidental poisonings. A frightened parent arrives with a child who swallowed a cleaning liquid. Or perhaps the harmful substance is a medicine. Or it might be a chemical product meant to kill insects. These are common causes of accidental poisoning.
In cases like this, seek medical help as soon as possible. Save the container of whatever caused the poisoning. And look on the container for information about anything that stops the effects of the poison. Save anything expelled from the mouth of the victim. That way, doctors can examine it.
In the past, some people forced poisoning victims to empty the stomach. They need a liquid syrup of ipecac(催呕剂) to do this. But an organization of children’s doctors no longer advises parents to keep syrup of ipecac. The American Academy of Pediatrics says some poisons can cause additional damage when they come back up the throat.
Millions of people know a way to save a person who is choking on something trapped in the throat. The method is commonly known as the Heimlich Manoeuvre or abdominal thrusts(腹部按压), which you can do by getting directly behind a sitting or standing person. Put your arms around the victim’s waist. Close one hand to form a ball. Place it over the upper part of the stomach below the ribs. Place the other hand on top. Then push forcefully inward and upward. Repeat the abdominal thrusts until the object is expelled from the mouth. For someone who is pregnant or very fat, place your hands a little higher than with normal abdominal thrusts.
Red Cross experts say taking these steps can save many lives. But they also warn that abdominal thrusts are not for people who have almost drowned. They say the use of the method could delay other ways to restart breathing in the victim. Abdominal thrust should be used only in cases where a near-drowning victim is choking on an object.
To learn more about first aid, ask a hospital or organization like a Red Cross or Red Crescent Society for information. There may be training classes offered in your area. If you know first aid methods, you can be calmer and more helpful in case of emergency.
12. Which of the following is NOT the common cause of accidental poisonings
A. A harmful medicine. B. A cleaning liquid.
C. Poisonous insects. D. Dangerous pesticide.
13. Which is the closest in meaning to the underlined word “expelled” in Paragraph 2
A. Coming out. B. Taking up. C. Going away. D. Getting down.
14. What is probably inferred from the passage
A. Abdominal thrusts are very complex to perform.
B. The Heimlich Manoeuvre is not suitable for the overweight.
C. Syrup of ipecac once had a positive effect on poisoning victims.
D. It is more cautious to save a drowning person using abdominal thrusts.
15. What is the author’s purpose in writing this text
A. To warn people to avoid accidental poisonings.
B. To provide a short medical guide to first aid.

Half the battle is won once you prioritize(优先处理)your tasks. Make a list of what needs to be done. Plan your day through these lists and set realistic deadlines to accomplish each one of them. 17

19

If you are constantly attending to such notifications, how are you supposed to do meaningful work While working on an important project, put your phone on silent or switch it off. If you really want to stay updated with your social media accounts, you can set specialized time slots to check your phone.
Cut outside noise.
Until you do away with noise, you won't be able to focus. Limiting auditory distractions is crucial in increasing attention span. You can use noise-canceling headphones for that. 20 In case that doesn't solve the problem, choose remote work for a day or two to regain your lost focus.

“It’s a crow, a crow.” A little while later, the father again asked his son the fourth time, “What is this ”
This time, the son shouted at his father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again, although I have told you so many times ‘IT IS A CROW’ Are you not able to understand this ”
A little while later the father went to his room and came back with an old tattered(发皱的) diary, which he had maintained since his son was born.
