From its castle foundation to its current state as home to some 38, 000 treasured works of art, discover their stories and history, and spend quality time with the Mona Lisa on this one of a kind storytelling experience. On this live online tour, our expert Louvre guides from their home in Paris to yours, will help you understand the architectural transition (建筑的过渡) from castle to art gallery, and the important works of art.
From its plinth (底座), the ancient statue of Venus de Milo plays an important role in the modern culture. Moving on to other works we will visit the Winged Victory of Samothrace generally held as a competitor in beauty to the statue of Venus we just explored. Our guides will explain the discussion over its origins, other images inspired by her figure, and where, how, and why she traveled in the year 1939.
After a look at a few more masterpieces we will continue our way through the halls, moving closer to a painting so famous that it attracts close to six million visitors each year. After graduating from art school with a degree in illustration (插图), I was at a standstill and didn't know how to work in the art industry. Back then, I was still living in Laguna Beach, California, so I decided to try my hand at plein air (野外写生) painting. This was something I had only done once or twice before, and with little success.
After a week, I fell in love with the work of Edgar Payne, William Wendt and the like, and at that moment I knew this was what I wanted to do with my life. I told my friends and family that I would not be going into the field of illustration, but into the field to paint from life, in plein air.
After one month of painting every day, from sunrise to sunset, I was selling here and there, mostly right off the easel (画架), but I quickly burned through my savings, and soon after, lost my apartment and moved into my car parked along the Pacific Coastline. My family tried sending me money but I always refused. A few more months passed, I was underfed and had no gas to move my car, but I kept painting.
One day, with a dozen paintings laid out by my feet in South Laguna with a serious sunburn and hungry stomach, a woman walked by, complimented my work and then bought all of my paintings! Turns out this woman was a big art collector. Then she generously gave me a show in her home a couple of weeks later. I nearly sold out at the show and then I got picked up by a famous gallery in Laguna Beach the following week.
This was back in 2008 and so many years later, I'm painting more than ever. I will still pick up an illustration job from time to time, but painting plein air is what I love more than anything — this is how I spend my time. I have work in a couple of galleries here in Oregon, but I do most of my sales through my website, which is updated (更新) daily.

A. Spoke highly of. B. Stayed clear of.
C. Lent a hand to. D. Gave a voice to.
31. How is the author doing now

It was 1912, and Albert Berry and the Benoist Aircraft Company were trying to make history by performing the first parachute (降落伞) jump from an airplane. The company chose Jefferson Barracks, a U.S. military post (哨所), as the landing site so Benoist could show possible military uses for the parachutes.
Tom Benoist and others at the company had been planning the jump for months, but there were a few challenges to meet. Back then, parachutes were not put in backpacks as they are today. They were kept loose. A parachute could easily get caught up in the plane. To solve this problem, Tom Benoist and pilot Tony Jannus designed a special cone-shaped (圆锥形的) device that was attached below the plane to hold the parachute in place. Another challenge was working out what would happen to the plane when someone jumped out. Many believed a sudden loss of weight would cause the plane to go out of control. Jannus and Berry experimented by repeatedly dropping heavy tools with parachutes. They were happy to discover that the plane still stayed on course.
On March 1, Jannus flew Berry toward Jefferson Barracks. The officer of the post, Colonel W. T. Wood, received a call that the plane was on its way. Soon, the plane came into sight. Soldiers rushed onto the grounds to watch.
Berry lowered himself into a harness device that was attached to the bottom of the plane and the parachute. He pulled out a knife and cut the connection between the plane and the harness. Then he fell backward to clear the landing gear (起落架). His body weight caused the parachute, fastened with rubber bands, to break away from the cone. Berry separated from the plane. His body started turning somersaults (空翻). He fell several hundred feet before his parachute finally opened. Berry finally landed perfectly behind the soldiers' dining hall.
Immediately, soldiers started talking about how parachutes could be used in war and how soldiers could be dropped onto battlegrounds to surprise the enemy. Soon, parachutes were used by the military.
Today, parachuting is a sport enjoyed by many people. And it all began thanks to the achievement of Tony Jannus and Albert Berry.
32. Why did Berry parachute into Jefferson Barracks
A. To join the army led by Colonel W. T. Wood.
B. To ask the soldiers for help in case of danger.
C. To take advantage of the open training ground.
D. To show parachutes could be used by the military.
33. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. How the parachute was lightened.
B. How the difficulties were solved.
C. How the plane was improved.
D. How the plans were changed.
34. What can we learn from paragraph 4
A. Berry made a successful parachute jump.
B. Berry jumped straight from the gate of the plane.
C. Berry enjoyed the journey falling through the air.
D. Berry opened his parachute the time he jumped out the plane.
35. Which of the following can best describe Jannus and Berry
A. Humorous and honest. B. Brave and creative.
C. Independent and patient. D. Knowledgeable and careful.

Why is science education important in our schools Science is everywhere. 36 As children grow up in an increasingly technologically and scientifically advanced world, they need to be scientifically literate (有文化的) to succeed. Ideally, teaching the scientific method to students is teaching them how to think, learn, solve problems and make informed decisions. 37
Governmental guidelines and tests often focus on middle and high school level STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education. 38 Not only does science education teach young learners problem-solving skills that will help them throughout their schooling, it also engages them in science from the start.
Kids usually form a basic opinion about the sciences shortly after beginning school. If this is a negative opinion, it can be hard to engage those students in science as they grow older. 39 By doing so, students will be encouraged to learn the sciences throughout school.
40 It connects students' lives with important problem-solving and critical (批判性的) thinking skills. Teaching these skills through science education gives students the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in school and beyond.
A. Science education gives children more choices.
B. Engage young students with interesting materials.

Why is science education important in our schools We are surrounded by technology and the products of science every day与上文中的Science is everywhere相照应,同时也与下文中的children grow up in an increasingly technologically and scientifically advanced world相照应,表明科学和技术在我们的生活中无处不在,因此科学教育非常重要。
37. G。根据上文中的teaching the scientific method to students is teaching them how to think, learn, solve problems and make informed decisions可知,作者在此处具体说明科学教育对学生的重要性。G项中的These skills指代上文中的how to think, learn, solve problems and make informed decisions,同时G项中的every aspect of a student's education and life也与上文中的Science is everywhere相照应。
38. F。 Not only does science education teach young learners problemsolving skills that will help them throughout their schooling, it also engages them in science from the start可知,作者在此处介绍从小接受科学教育的好处,与上文中的often focus on middle and high school level STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education形成了对比关系,因此F项中的But符合逻辑,同时F项中的science education should begin much earlier也与下文中的engages them in science from the start相照应。
39. B。根据上文中的it can be hard to engage those students in science as they grow older和下文中的students will be encouraged to learn the sciences throughout school可知,作者在设空处是要介绍鼓励学生学习科学学科的具体方法。B项中的Engage young students与上文中的engage those students相照应,同时下文中的By doing so也指代B项Engage young students with interesting materials,表明通过使用有趣的材料可以调动学生学习科学学科的积极性。
40. D。 Science education is one of the most important subjects in school符合本段主旨,同时也呼应文章开头Why is science education important in our schools。
Ben Blumenfeld is a web designer及work for a big TV network可知,Ben是一名网页设计师,故可推断其在大型电视网络公司的工作是为主要的节目设计“网页(websites)”。
42. D。 He ever made a breakthrough及great growth in the audience for a TV show可推断,此处需要填一个表示因果关系的词,故led to(导致)符合语境,意为“他取得的突破导致一档节目的观众量猛增”。
48. A。由上文中的his day-to-day work just went against that可推断,Ben意识到是时候换一份新的并且能把他的希望和职业结合起来的“工作(job)”了。
49. B。结合上下文及本句中的from Jeff Hammerbacher, a manager of a social networking startup可推断,一天,他收到了一份工作“邀请(invitation)”。
50. C。51. D。结合上文中提到的Ben有自己的价值追求及文中的the CEO — Mark Zuckerberg — told Ben that what they did would influence the very way the human race可知,在与Mark Zuckerberg的谈话中,Ben提到了他想做一些真正“有意义的(meaningful)”工作,而Mark Zuckerberg说他们将要做的事情会影响整个人类之间的“交流(communicated)”方式,将世界紧密地联系到一起。
