When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.
So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail His reply:“Because I love your stories. If you're willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try.
I chose Paul Revere's horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith(银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the horse's mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny;and unlikely to be anyone else's choice.
What did the horse think, as he sped through the night Did he get tired Have doubts Did he want to quit I sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere's horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half-dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them.
When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again.” I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn't win, I wouldn't care.

A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news.

I went to my teacher's office after the award presentation.

答案
One possible version:
A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news. The social studies teacher burst into the classroom to announce the news, his face beaming with excitement. “Congratulations!” he exclaimed, waving a letter proudly. Shocked and excited, I couldn't believe my ears. The hours spent honing my essay, the countless revisions, and the newfound joy in writing had paid off. I glanced around the classroom, where my classmates erupted into applause. So excited were they that my classmates decided to hold an award presentation on the spot in honor of the triumph and my perseverance.
I went to my teacher's office after the award presentation. A mix of gratitude and curiosity swirled within me. “Thank you, sir,” I said, my voice filled with genuine appreciation, for winning the contest was absolutely unexpected. Hearing my words, the teacher smiled warmly, saying that anyone shouldn't underestimate their ability. Patting me on the shoulder, he continued to encourage me to keep writing and exploring, for the contest was just the beginning. Inspired by his words, I left his office with a renewed sense of purpose, eager to embark on my next literary adventure.

I was invited to a cookout on an old friend's farm in western Washington. I parked my car outside the farm and walked past a milking house which had apparently not been used in many years. A noise at a window caught my attention, so I entered it. It was a hummingbird(蜂鸟), desperately trying to escape. She was covered in spider-webs(蛛网) and was barely able to move her wings. She ceased her struggle the instant I picked her up.
With the bird in my cupped hand, I looked around to see how she had gotten in. The broken window glass was the likely answer. I stuffed a piece of cloth into the hole and took her outside, closing the door securely behind me.
When I opened my hand, the bird did not fly away; she sat looking at me with her bright eyes. I removed the sticky spider-webs that covered her head and wings. Still, she made no attempt to fly. Perhaps she had been struggling against the window too long and was too tired Or too thirsty
As I carried her up the blackberry-lined path toward my car where I kept a water bottle, she began to move. I stopped, and she soon took wing but did not immediately fly away. Hovering(悬停), she approached within six inches of my face. For a very long moment, this tiny creature looked into my eyes, turning her head from side to side. Then she flew quickly out of sight.
During the cookout, I told my hosts about the hummingbird incident. They promised to fix the window. As I was departing, my friends walked me to my car. I was standing by the car when a hummingbird flew to the center of our group and began hovering. She turned from person to person until she came to me. She again looked directly into my eyes, then let out a squeaking call and was gone. For a moment, all were speechless. Then someone said, “She must have come to say good-bye.”

I was just about to leave when the hummingbird appeared.

答案
One possible version:
A few weeks later, I went to the farm again. As my car neared it, my thoughts drifted back to the moment when I rescued the hummingbird from spider-webs. I rushed back to the deserted house. It was a great comfort that the original hole in the window was nowhere to be found. Leaving the house, I couldn't help wondering how it was getting on now. Had it managed to find its way back home, or was it still out there somewhere struggling to survive
I was just about to leave when the hummingbird appeared. A flash of movement caught my attention. I turned around to see the same hummingbird hovering in the air. It seemed that the bird was waiting for me, and its beady eyes were on mine as if trying to convey some deep and unspoken gratitude. I felt a surge of relief and awe at the sight of this sound and grateful creature, and I knew that I would always cherish the memories we shared as I climbed into my car and drove away.

It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn't with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school's coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide.”
I bit back my frustration(懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer—that's all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.

答案
One possible version:
We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn't look at me.“Why do you give up the run, David ” I whispered to him. “I will be a loser and others will laugh at me,” he murmured, with his face flushing. I hugged him tightly, saying, “You are a determined boy and I believe you can face the challenge bravely. More importantly, it is participation rather than the result that matters to you.” Inspired by what I said, David looked up and said firmly, “I will run.” Rising and turning around, he headed for the starting line.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. Hearing the gun blasting, they rushed out like arrows. However, David fell behind soon despite great efforts. Every time he was about to quit, I shouted crazily, “Come on, David!” He kept running, sweaty and exhausted. Finally, when David struggled to cross the finishing line, a storm of cheers and applause erupted from the people present. Dragging his heavy legs, David approached me. He embraced me and said, “Thank you!” I was overwhelmed with joy for his wonderful performance.

A MOTHER'S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother's Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff's hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

As the twins looked around them in disappointment, their father appeared. When seeing Jeff's hand burned, he went and fetched the first-aid kit and treated it instantly. “Why did you cook by yourselves Don't you know it's dangerous ” shouted the father with anger. “Today is Mother's Day. We want to prepare breakfast and give Mother a big surprise.” Hearing this, the father smiled and whispered, “How I am proud of you! Let's do it together!” It was not long before a perfect breakfast was well done, giving off a nice smell.
The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. At the sight of the meal, the mother felt a little confused, asking “Where did you get this breakfast ” “We have done it with Father. It's a surprise for you on Mother's Day,” responded Jeff, his face blooming like a flower. “This is the best gift I have ever received! Thank you!” said the mother excitedly with tears sparkling in her eyes. She embraced the twins tightly. At that time, the twins really knew home was a place where members should understand each other and enjoy love.

Pumpkin (南瓜) carving at Halloween is a family tradition. We visit a local farm every October. In the pumpkin field, I compete with my three brothers and sister to seek out the biggest pumpkin. My dad has a rule that we have to carry our pumpkins back home, and as the eldest child I have an advantage—I carried an 85-pounder back last year.
This year, it was hard to tell whether my prize or the one chosen by my 14-year-old brother, Jason, was the winner. Unfortunately we forgot to weigh them before taking out their insides, but I was determined to prove my point. All of us were hard at work at the kitchen table, with my mom filming the annual event. I'm unsure now why I thought forcing my head inside the pumpkin would settle the matter, but it seemed to make perfect sense at the time.
With the pumpkin resting on the table, hole uppermost, I bent over and pressed my head against the opening. At first I got jammed just above my eyes and then, as I went on with my task, unwilling to quit, my nose briefly prevented entry. Finally I managed to put my whole head into it, like a cork (软木塞) forced into a bottle. I was able to straighten up with the huge pumpkin resting on my shoulders.
My excitement was short-lived. The pumpkin was heavy. “I'm going to set it down, now,” I said, and with Jason helping to support its weight, I bent back over the table to give it somewhere to rest. It was only when I tried to remove my head that I realized getting out was going to be less straightforward than getting in. When I pulled hard, my nose got in the way. I got into a panic as I pressed firmly against the table and moved my head around trying to find the right angle, but it was no use. “I can't get it out!” I shouted, my voice sounding unnaturally loud in the enclosed space.

答案
One possible version:
I was stuck for five or six minutes though it felt much longer. I was barely breathing, which nearly killed me. Hearing my cry, my dad came to my rescue in a hurry. He rested my head on the table, pushed it farther into the pumpkin and then put his hand inside to undo my ponytail. Through some six minutes' struggle, he managed to get my head out. Luckily, my mom filmed what happened to me while Jason and others joked around me.
The video was posted the day before Halloween. Seeing a miserable girl whose nose was filled with pumpkin pulp, I can't help laughing. Though I became famous, or rather notorious, suspicion clouding my mind forced me to challenge my mom why she didn't break the pumpkin to save me but filmed the happenings, my mom said that she wanted to give me a warning as well as a souvenir so that I would be more careful later on. Ironically, I have been increasingly becoming famous because of an unconscious but aggressive act to stand a chance over Jason of getting the prize.

The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy was in decline, some people in the town had lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were trying to help each other meet the challenges.
Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She knew they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would bring food and medicine to them.
One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed, his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boy—his name was Bernard—had interested her very much.
“I wish you could see him,” she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. “He is such a help to his mother. He wants very much to earn some money, but I don't see what he can do.”
After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard. “I wish we could help him to earn money,” said Clara. “His family is suffering so much.”
“So do I,” said Harry. “We really should do something to assist them.”
For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried,“I have a great idea! I have a solution that we can all help accomplish (完成).”
The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one. “I tell you what we can do,” said John. “You know that big box of corn Uncle John sent us Well, we can make popcorn(爆米花), and put it into paper bags, and Bernard can take it around to the houses and sell it.”

John, will you agree to be responsible for the work ” “Absolutely!” replied John, excitement shining in his eyes. Immediately, the children were busy making popcorn while their mother went out to invite Bernard. When coming back, she brought Bernard with her who had been told everything. Seeing the popcorn arranged in the basket, he was moved to tears.
With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business. Everything went amazingly!Soon he returned with an empty basket. Never had he earned so much money before in his life. Finding it was all to be his, he was so delighted that he could hardly speak, but his face lit up. People began to watch for the “little popcorn boy”, and every week he had at least fifty cents to take home. All this was due to John's bright idea, and the way he carried it out. He became a little hero in the community.

One fall, my wife Elli and I had a single goal: to photograph polar bears. We were staying at a research camp outside “the polar bear capital of the world”—the town of Churchill in Manitoba, Canada.
Taking pictures of polar bears is amazing but also dangerous. Polar bears—like all wild animals—should be photographed from a safe distance. When I'm face to face with a polar bear, I like it to be through a camera with a telephoto lens. But sometimes, that is easier said than done. This was one of those times.
As Elli and I cooked dinner, a young male polar bear who was playing in a nearby lake sniffed, and smelled our garlic bread.
The hungry bear followed his nose to our camp, which was surrounded by a high wire fence. He pulled and bit the wire. He stood on his back legs and pushed at the wooden fence posts.
Terrified, Elli and I tried all the bear defense actions we knew. We yelled at the bear, hit pots hard, and fired blank shotgun shells into the air. Sometimes loud noises like these will scare bears off. Not this polar bear though—he just kept trying to tear down the fence with his massive paws(爪子).
I radioed the camp manager for help. He told me a helicopter was on its way, but it would be 30 minutes before it arrived. Making the best of this close encounter (相遇), I took some pictures of the bear.
Elli and I feared the fence wouldn't last through 30 more minutes of the bear's punishment. The camp manager suggested I use pepper spray. The spray burns the bears' eyes, but doesn't hurt them. So I approached our uninvited guest slowly and, through the fence, sprayed him in the face. With an angry roar (吼叫), the bear ran to the lake to wash his eyes.

At that very moment, the helicopter arrived.

答案
One possible version:
A few minutes later, the bear headed back to our camp. Probably angered by the spray, the bear started attacking the fence even more violently. Not knowing what to do, I just stood there frozen with terror. Apparently, Elli kept a much more clear head facing this critical situation. She grabbed a big piece of garlic bread from the plate and threw it across the fence, which immediately drew the bear's attention. The bear stopped pounding the fence and walked towards the bread, but he went back again in a minute when he finished the bread.
At that very moment, the helicopter arrived. The noises of the helicopter frightened the bear away, leaping clumsily into the bush. Although he disappeared temporarily, we dared not remain there anymore. Climbing quickly into the helicopter, I slowly recollected myself! At our request, the helicopter circled the snowy area to follow the bear, so that we could take more photographs of the bear running through the bush. The day was really an adventure, but I thought it was worthwhile. The pictures taken that day were very beautiful. I felt the close-up snaps we took were worth the danger we experienced.

Allen was playing in his room. He heard a familiar chirping(吱喳声) and rustling from the cage in the bedroom corner. It was his beloved Blue Finch, named Mary. The boy had cared for the bird since he was six, a gift from his mother for graduating from kindergarten and entering primary school. Now, at 12 years old, Allen had just recently celebrated his primary school graduation and was about to take another step in his life journey toward junior high school. For the past six years, Mary was his constant companion and closest friend.
As he grew up, Allen found it difficult to make friends or be close to others. Having had to move around many times and change schools due to his father's work in the military, Allen never felt like he truly belonged in any one place. He always knew it wouldn't be long before he would have to move yet again. The stress and pressure of a constantly mobile life also led to strain and pressure at home, leading to loud arguments and fights between his mother and father which he could hear from behind closed doors.
But, throughout all of this, Allen's closest friend and companion—the true source of stability in his life—was Mary, his finch. But Mary was more than just a simple, calm pet: whenever Allen felt sad, the bird would always be singing and chirping, almost as if she sensed how he felt and wanted to lift his spirits. And when Allen fed the bird, Mary always moved across her branch to rest against his finger, never failing to bring a smile to Allen's face. Yet, one summer day after Allen had come home after a walk at the park, he found the window of his bedroom open and the door of Mary's cage open—the bird was gone. Suddenly, Allen realized that he must have left the cage open after cleaning it and forgot about the window being open on such a hot day. Upset, Allen fell down to the floor sobbing.

Upon hearing the noise, Allen's mother rushed upstairs and asked what had happened.

Filled with anticipation, Allen and his mother went outside to look for Mary.

答案
One possible version:
Upon hearing the noise. Allen's mother rushed upstairs and asked what had happened. “Mary, she's...she's gone,” Allen sighed sadly with disappointment. “Don't worry, honey,” said his mother, trying to convey comfort and confidence, “Let's move together and find Mary. Six years of companion has established a close bond between both of you. She will definitely come back to her family.” Allen's mother then kissed him fondly on the forehead and helped him up from the floor. Hand in hand, they made their way downstairs and to the front door.
Filled with anticipation, Allen and his mother went outside to look for Mary. They called out Mary's name, even imitating bird sounds as they walked down the street. They scanned their way down one block after another—eventually they found themselves at the entrance of the park Allen and Mary had been to multiple times. Amazingly, it was Mary that was perching atop of the bench where Allen always liked to sit in times of sorrow and loneliness. At the sight of Allen, Mary unhesitatingly spread her wings and flew, chirping all the way, into Allen's cupped hand. His mother was right after all: Mary always found her way back to Allen's heart.

My middle child, Jake, was smart and good-looking, but he always saw the cup of life as half empty! Every day when he came home from school, Jake would list everything bad that happened that day!
On his ninth birthday, we saved enough money to take the family to Disneyland for two days. His dad and I didn't make much then, so it cost a considerable amount, but we felt Jake's birthday was worth it. After doing Disneyland to death, we returned to our hotel room, all exhausted. And I asked the birthday boy, “Did you have fun today, Jake ”
All my fault-finding son could say to me was,“Pirates(海盗) of the Caribbean was closed!”
“Jake Marshall,” I was clearly unable to contain my anger, “we stood in line for an hour and a half to see the Haunted Mansion. We rode Space Mountain three times. We spent two days playing in the park, and all you can say is, Pirates of the Caribbean was closed ” Clearly, something had to be done about his negative attitude and I was going to be the one to do it!
I was determined to help him. I read every article and bought every book. With the help of great resources, I found my son had the tendency to see the worst in every situation. My research told me that people with negativity have an emotional need for sensitivity. That meant I needed to listen to my son's daily pessimistic reports. My usual reaction was to try to talk Jake out of his negativity, but that wouldn't satisfy his need for sensitivity, so I had to let him finish his complaints and ask what good things happened. Then I needed to wait until he could tell me. This would help Jake realize that good things really were happening to him.

From then on, Jake came to understand the power of seeing good points.

答案
One possible version:
One day Jake came home from school and complained as usual. He listed everything that made him unhappy, his face clouded with gloom. I sat next to him and gently said, “Jake, are there any happy things ” Jake looked up at me, confused, and then hesitantly mumbled, “Today, the teacher praised me.” Curious, I asked for the reason. Inspired by my inquiry, Jake went from speaking in fragments to pouring out his excitement and enthusiasm. At the end, I patted his shoulder and said, “Jake, you had such a meaningful day today. Think more about the good points.” A glimmer of light sparkled in Jake's eyes as he nodded with effort.
From then on, Jake came to understand the power of seeing the good points. Every day when he came home, he couldn't wait to tell me about the happy moments of his day. I would pull him into my embrace, letting him know that his happiness was my happiness. I felt gratified by the rewards of my efforts. Now, Jake has grown up, and whenever I hear his laughter as he shares the good points with me, I am overwhelmed with excitement. Indeed, he always sees the cup of life as half full.

Zaki was small for his twelve years, and he hated being treated as a child. Farid, his older brother, had been looked upon as a man long before he was Zaki's age. Now, every day as the sun warmed the Gulf, Farid and the other young men went out in their wooden boats to dive for oysters. With luck, there would be pearls in many of them. Each pearl earned a bonus for the man who found it.
Many times Zaki begged to go along, but Farid always refused.
“You ” Farid would laugh. “First, small one, you have to become larger than the oyster!” Still laughing, Farid would go his manly way, leaving Zaki bitter and angry.
So every day Zaki would go to the shallow water to practice. His grandfather, a former diver, would watch him and advise him. All morning, Zaki would practice diving beneath the waves. Every afternoon, he would again go underwater and hold his breath. With daily practice, his diving improved gradually. Soon Zaki felt as much at home in the water as he did out of it.
Zaki decided to challenge Farid the next day. He rose early the next morning. Even so, he had to hurry to catch up with Farid, who was already on the beach.
“Farid, wait!” called Zaki. “I must speak to you.”
In the stillness of the morning his voice carried clearly. The group of men around Farid grew quiet as Zaki spoke.
“Farid, I say that I can hold my breath under the water as long as you can. If I win, I ask only that you treat me as a man and let me dive by your side.” The men of the village burst out laughing.
Farid looked amused. “And what happens, younger brother, when you lose ”
Looked down upon, Zaki shouted, “I will not lose! Let's go into the Gulf to compete. The men of the village are here to judge.”
Farid looked surprised, but with all of his friends looking on, he had little choice but to agree.

One possible version:
Zaki and Farid went out into the sea until it was deep enough for them to dive. Then, at a signal, both dived beneath the waves. Zaki opened his eyes and looked at Farid, who was smiling with confidence. That smile made Zaki even more determined to win. Seconds ticked by with neither brother moving toward the surface. Slowly, the smile was fading from Farid's face, for he hadn't been expecting such serious competition. Time passing, there was a frown on Farid's face, which soon turned into a worried look. Farid realized that Zaki could possibly beat him.
Looking into Farid's eyes, Zaki suddenly understood what losing might mean to his brother. He would be teased about losing to a mere child. Looking at Farid's suffering, Zaki smiled. Thinking for a while, Zaki kicked his feet, rising to the surface of the water a second before Farid's head appeared beside him. The watchers cheered, patting Farid on the back. Farid, however, put his arm around Zaki's shoulders, announcing that Zaki was qualified. Meanwhile, he whispered, “Thank you.” Then, both brothers had learned that it takes more than strength to make a man.

The icy wind howled across the empty street and it was an unusually quiet day in the emergency room on December 25. Quiet, that is, except for the nurses who were standing around the nurses' station complaining about having to work on Christmas Day, for people were supposed to be spending time with their families, exchanging gifts and wishes.
I was a guiding nurse that day and had just done the cleanup in the waiting room. Since there were no patients waiting to be seen at the time, I returned to the nurses' station for a cup of hot coffee that someone had brought in for Christmas. Just then, a colleague came back and told me I had five patients waiting to be evaluated.
I was surprised, “Five How did I get five I was just out there and no one was in the waiting room.”
“Well, there are five signed in.”
So I went straight out and called the first name. Five bodies showed up at my guiding desk, a pale short woman and four small children in untidy clothing.
“Are you all sick ” I asked suspiciously.
“Yes,” she said weakly and lowered her head.
“Okay,” I replied, unconvinced. “Who's first ” One by one they sat down, and I asked the usual beginning questions. When it came to the descriptions of their symptoms, things got a little vague. Two of the children had headaches, but the headaches weren't accompanied by the normal body language of holding the head or trying to keep it still. Two children had earaches, but only one could tell me which ear was affected. The mother complained of a cough, but seemed to work to produce it.
Something was wrong with the picture. Our hospital policy, however, was not to turn away any patient, so we would see them. When I explained to the mother that it might be a little while before a doctor saw her because there were several more critical patients, she responded, “Take your time. It's warm here and there is a Christmas tree.”

The nurses, complaining about working Christmas, turned to sympathy for the homeless family.

答案
One possible version:
Then the mother turned and, with a smile, settled her kids in the waiting room. Though warm, the room was far from comfortable for children, who nestled closely by the Christmas tree. The youngest kid was staring at gifts on the tree, exclaiming something to her mother. Met with refusal, the wretched creature was on the verge of tears. The guilty mother looked upset, great sorrow clouding her face. The rest froze, eyes falling on their little sister. Realizing they were homeless, I went back and told my colleagues what had happened.
The nurses, complaining about working Christmas, turned to sympathy for the homeless family. Soon we were busy preparing presents for our unexpected guests, who just wanted to stay warm on Christmas Day. With gifts in their hands, the kids couldn't restrain their joy, whose laughter became quite infectious. The waiting room pulsed with happiness and we were able to locate a shelter that would take the family in. As they were leaving, the mother hugged each of us and whispered, “You're our angels and it's your love that warms us up!”

Kathy's family vacation to the beach was usually the highlight of her summer. This year, however, her parents announced a new rule: no phones for the entire week.
“But my friends will be expecting updates on the trip,” Kathy complained. Kathy's mom gave her a serious look. Unwillingly, Kathy handed her phone over and her mom locked it away.
The drive to the beach house took most of the day. As they turned off the highway onto country back roads, the clouds darkened. Rain started to pour. “Even more beautiful in the rain,” her mother said. “What do you think, Kathy ” Kathy glared at her mom. “Beautiful,” she muttered.
That night after dinner, Kathy wandered into the kitchen, where her father was washing dishes. She gave her father a loving look and said in her sweetest voice, “Couldn't I have my phone back, just for one second Just so I can tell everyone what an amazing time I'm having!”
“Can't,” he said. “It's not here. Remember ” Kathy was very annoyed. Having nothing better to do, she examined the dusty bookcase in the living room. The books looked as dull as the weather. On the top shelf, however, she spotted a puzzle. She took it, emptied the pieces on the table, and began to sort them.
After what seemed like a few minutes, she looked up. It was past ten o'clock. She had been working for almost two hours! She yawned. The puzzle was less than half done, but she was exhausted. So, she went to bed.
When Kathy awoke the next morning, she jumped out of bed and threw open the curtains. A blazing sun was rising over the blue ocean. The sky was cloudless. The scene reminded Kathy of a photo that her friend Betty had recently sent her.
This view was even better. It would leave everyone speechless. Kathy dashed to her bedside table and reached for her phone. But there was nothing there. She sighed. Still, she wandered in front of the window, admiring the sunrise.

答案
One possible version:
After a quick breakfast, Kathy headed to the beach. Under no circumstances had Kathy expected the scenery to be so spectacular! With the sea wind blowing against her face, Kathy totally lost herself in the stunning views. After half an hour's leisure walk along the beach, Kathy returned to the house. “How do I spend the rest of the day ” Kathy murmured to herself. Suddenly, the unfinished puzzle caught her attention. She felt a little excited and buried herself in it once again. Every time the shapes met, Kathy was overwhelmed by happiness. Soon, all that were left were a few gaps. She quickly put the remaining pieces into place. The puzzle was completed!
Appreciating the finished puzzle, she realized she hadn't thought of her cellphone for hours. Trying to preserve the image in her mind, she quietly started taking it apart rather than taking pictures to update her friends on the trip. “That,” she thought, “is just for me.” Without the distractions from her cellphone, she found herself engaged in the story sharing session with Mom and Dad willingly. They spent a high-quality family time together. On arriving home, Mom gave her cellphone back. This time, however, she had no intention to share but to keep all the great memories in her mind.

Even before I reached the tent, I knew there would be trouble. My little brother Andy was following me, with a sleeping bag, a flashlight, and his stuffed bear. My friends Wade and Brad thought Andy would ruin everything. He would get scared in the middle of the night and have to be taken back to the house. They complained so much that you'd think they were hospital patients instead of kids I'd invited for an outdoor sleepover.
Andy promised that he wouldn't ruin anything. He wormed his way into the tent and settled in the far corner. Night was closing in, too, with the woods around us fading toward black. The house, with its porch light, seemed a long way from us.
“Time for ghost stories!” Brad announced as soon as I'd closed the tent. He told a story about vampires(吸血鬼), but it only made us fall over laughing. When it was Wade's turn, he told a story of three guys who were camping in a tent. He described our situation exactly—except for Andy. When he was describing a terrifying creature, somewhere outside, a branch snapped (咔嚓折断). The hair on my arms shot straight up. “These guys were crawling into their sleeping bags, right,” Wade continued, “when out of the darkness rang this terrible cry.” And out of the woods behind us there was a cry, High-pitched, frightening, and strange! The hair on my head shot straight up!
“What was that ” Brad asked as the cry came again. We all looked at each other in horror, speechless. Wade suggested someone should go out to check, but no one dared. “What if it's something trapped or hurt ” Andy said anxiously. We focused our flashlights on Andy, whom we'd forgotten, sitting in the corner with his arms around his bear. Andy would adopt every lost or hurt animal in the world if Mom would let him.

“I'm going to see.” Andy ran out of the tent and disappeared in the darkness.

Andy said it was a baby monkey caught between branches, and it was crying for its mama.

答案
One possible version:
“I'm going to see.” Andy ran out of the tent and disappeared in the darkness. Although filled with fear, I ran after him without hesitation. He was my little brother after all. Andy headed into the woods, his flashlight beam wobbling along the trail. Finally, I saw him, a few yards ahead, with his flashlight aimed at the upper branches of a large tree. I raised my own light to light up the same spot. A pair of shining eyes seemed to float in the darkness. My heart pounded harder.
Andy said it was a baby monkey caught between branches, and it was crying for its mama. I knew he was right. I had to admit that Andy was impressive. We helped the little monkey out carefully. Having ensured that the little monkey was in good condition, we let it go. When we walked down back, I could see the guys before the tent. “Are you all right ” They asked. “We're fine.” I answered with a broad smile, knowing that the guys' opinion of Andy would change, too.

On a hot September afternoon, Peter and his friend Isabel were on their way to the library. When they passed by Tubman Park, Isabel suggested cutting through it to get to the library. As they entered the park, the sight of the swings (秋千) and the merry-go-round(旋转木马) brought back a flood of memories of their childhood spent there. But now everything looked so old, sad, and dirty. Litter lay on the ground next to an overflowing trash bin. There were still young schoolchildren playing there but they had to avoid the trash that littered the playground. A little boy told them that the government took the other trash cans away and the remaining one never got emptied often.
As they headed toward the library, the two high school students wrinkled their forehead. In the library, they encountered Mrs. Evans, their kind-hearted fifth-grade teacher, retired yet still passionate. Mrs. Evans listened as Isabel and Peter eagerly explained what they'd seen. Finally, she recommended them to go to City Hall to voice concerns.
The next day, Isabel and Peter went into the building of City Hall but were met by an impatient officer. They were informed that the government couldn't help with their problem due to a tight budget. Discouraged, they left and turned to Mrs. Evans for help.
Under her guidance, they decided to ask Go Green, a non-profit organization whose goal is to protect the environment, for help. “This group is good at raising money for projects just like yours,” said Mrs. Evans. She promised to arrange for them to present their ideas to Go Green. Hearing this, their face lit up.
Two main tasks remained ahead: researching ways to clean up the park and preparing a convincing presentation. As Isabel was good at researching while Peter always had a talent for speaking, they cooperated quite well. Isabel learned from a science magazine that a new type of trash bin can squeeze the trash down without being emptied often, which saves time, money and energy. Based on this, Peter practiced his presentation over and over again.

答案
One possible version:
A week later, Peter stood nervously at the back of the hall where Go Green was meeting. Finally, it was time for him to do the presentation. Standing in front of several experts from Go Green, Peter was nervous of messing things up. But unbelievably, when he began to speak, everything went so smoothly. His voice was clear and powerful, and his speech was logical and well-organized. Peter ended his presentation with a deep bow and went out to wait for Go Green's decision.
After the meeting, Isabel excitedly told Peter the good news. Their ideas were approved and Go Green agreed to provide the money they needed to purchase the trash bin. Peter smiled. It meant not only did their efforts pay off, but also Tubman Park would restore its cleanness and tidiness. Peter and Isabel couldn't wait to tell Mrs. Evans this good news first and then work out the next step they needed to take.
