A bike road in Krommenie , a city in the Netherlands , isn’t just helping people get around -- it’s also producing energy. The road, named SolaRoad , is paved with solar batteries , which use the power of the sun to make electricity .
The project is created to show that the places where people ride , walk , or drive can also serve to produce energy . And the solar - powered road is doing a better job than expected . So far , it has created enough electricity to power three houses for a year
Many cities already cover rooftops with solar panels (面板). By using renewable sources of energy, cities can decrease their dependence on fuels, coal, oil and natural gas. Renewable sources of energy don’t get used up or create pollution as fuels do.
Roads can provide even larger space than roofs to harvest energy from the sun. Sten de Wit, one of the researchers behind SolaRoad , says ,“ In the Netherlands , we have about 140,000 kilometers of roads . It’s a
huge area , more than all of the rooftops combined."
To create the experimental bike road , the SolaRoad team lay down concrete slabs (混凝土板) with rows of solar batteries on . A layer of strong glass covers and protects the batteries . Sunlight passes through the glass and into the batteries , which turn the sunlight into electrical energy
Although the bike road is expensive to build, with the energy it produces , it could pay for itself within 15 years . By building solar - powered bike roads, cities could produce enough energy to power street lamps , traffic lights , and even electric cars. Most people don’t notice that the bike road is different from a traditional street . Sten de Wit says ,“ That is exactly what we want : it does whatever it has to do to be a proper road while harvesting solar energy at the same time.”

Because of our fast world of phones, fax machines and computers, the old-fashioned art of letter writing is at risk of disappearing. Yet, to me, receiving a letter cannot be matched by any other form of communication. There is the excitement of its arrival, the pleasure of seeing who it is from and the enjoyment of the contents.
Letter writing has been part of my life since I was a kid. It probably began with the little notes I would write to my mother. As I grew up, my mother always insisted( 坚 持 ) I write my own thank-you letters to others for New Year and birthday presents. It didn't matter how short or untidy they were as long as they
were letters.
When I left home at the age of eighteen to train as a doctor , I would write once a week, and so would my mother. Sometimes my father would write and it was always a joy to receive his long, amusing letters. The letters from home contained just everyday events concerning my parents and friends. Of course, we also made phone calls but it is the letters I remember most.
I love the letters that come with birthday or New Year cards. Notes are appreciated, but how much better it is to have a year's supply of news! And it's better still when it's an airmail envelope with beautiful stamps.
I am pleased that my children are carrying on the tradition. Like my mother before me,I insist they write their own thank-you letters. My daughter writes me little letters just as I did to my mother, ”Dear Mum, I love you and thanks for everything you have done for me....”. I strongly advise readers not to let letter writing become another "lost art”.
76. Why is the old-fashioned art of letter writing at risk of disappearing
77. Would the writer write thank-you letters to others for New Year or birthday presents
