London and Paris are two of Europe's biggest tourist destinations, just a few hours away from each other byroad or rail and an hour's distance by air. What about the train-ferry combination that many recall fondly from their childhoods Well, though it's budget-saving, this option is too time-consuming today, so better leave it to your memories. Since the UK is not part the Schengen Area, passengers need to go through passport control prior to boarding.
Air trips:
Though flying between London and Paris is by no means recommended, there are still a few people traveling between the two dynamic cities by air. A very low one-way fare is possible through advanced booking, but of course it’s rare, and that doesn’t include the taxi and rail fares traveling to and from the airports.
* One-way fares from Paris can be as low as ?49;
* From London, Air France flies with fares as low as 39 (?46), and British Airways as low as 48 (?56).
Rail trips:
The only direct train between London and Paris is the Eurostar, which travels 15-17 times per weekday. Eurostar’s 2015 edition trains can make the journey in two hours at speeds of up to 320 km/h. Besides, they offer good seating space.
* Fares begin at a reasonable 58 (?68), round trip;
* The earlier you book, the more you save.
Bus trips:
The bus is by far the least expensive and longest way to travel between Paris and London. Eurolines and OUIBUS are two major bus lines traveling between the two capitals. The journey takes between seven and nine hours. Both lines advertise free Wi-Fi.
* One-way Eurolines fares begin at ?15;
* One-way OUIBUS fares begin at ?15 too, but early bird sales can even lower the fare.
21. Which way is probably the most expensive for a round trip
A. By train-ferry. B. By air. C. By rail. D. By bus.
22. What special service does the bus trip provide
A. Passport free boarding. B. Taxi pickup.
C. Good seating space. D. Free Wi-Fi.
23. What do the trips have in common with each other
A. They are cheaper if booked ahead of time.
B. There are different competing companies.
C. They are more expensive from the Paris end.
D. There are still additional fees to be included.

Deveza’s mother was on the waiting list for a kidney transplant(肾移植). Deveza wanted to donate one of her own kidneys—but she was turned down because she might develop the same health problems as her mother in later life.
Deveza came up with a different plan. In 2017, she started the world’s first paired exchange of different organs between living donors, exchanging half her liver(肝) for someone else’s kidney. A case study of the organ(器官) exchange has now been published, and the surgeons who were involved are calling for more exchanges like this. “You can imagine the enormous impact for mixed organ extended chains,” says John Roberts, a surgeon at University of California, San Francisco.
Most organ transplants come from people who have died, but there are never enough organs. As most people can manage with just one of their kidneys, people with kidney failure are increasingly receiving donated organs from relatives or friends. If someone wants to donate but their immune(免疫的) system is unsuited, doctors may be able to find pairs of would-be donors who can each give a kidney to the other’s relative.
When Deveza was looking into such chains, she came across research describing the idea of trading a kidney with the only other organ generally taken from a living donor—the liver. She suggested the idea to many hospitals before she finally contacted Roberts, who saw the idea’s potential.
Deveza was assessed to be in good enough health to donate part of her liver. It then took 18 months to find Annie Simmons, in Idaho, whose liver was unsuitable to use as a transplant for her sister with severe liver disease. They drew up a plan: Simmons would donate a kidney to Deveza’s mother, and in return, Deveza would give half her liver to Simmons’ sister. The hospital gave the go-ahead and the four operations took place on the same day successfully.
The team hope that the ground-breaking case will inspire more people to consider doing the same. Roberts says that direct exchanges involving two donors could enable up to thirty extra living-donor liver transplants a year—a ten percent increase.
24. What did Deveza do to save her mother
A. Carrying out a case study. B. Calling for kidney donations.
C. Launching a medical experiment. D. Trading half her liver for a kidney.
25. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A. Patients’ desperation to survive.
B. Several sources of organ donation.
C. Current situation of organ transplants.
D Doctors’ efforts to improve organ transplants.
26. What can be inferred about the organ exchange between Deveza and Simmons
A. It discouraged organ donation. B. It brought two families together.
C. It met with widespread approval. D. It produced a desirable outcome.
27. What is the best title for the text
A. My Liver, Your Kidney
B. Mother’s Love, Our Happiness
C. Organ Transplant: Blessing for Patients

Modern agriculture and its ability to feed billions of people may be among humanity's greatest successes. However, it comes with hidden costs. For example, have you ever considered how much water is needed to provide you with a steak or a salad It may surprise you.
In a recent study published in the journal Nutrients, scientists from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), Australia's national science organization, took a close look at the diets of 9,341 adult Australians — specifically, their “water-scarcity footprints (水消耗足迹)”.
It turned out that a sweet tooth not only adds to our waistlines (腰围) but also stresses our water resources. The water-scarcity footprint is a widely recognized measurement of water consumption. First, it counts the liters of water you used. Then, it looks at the place where the water was used. The more lacking water is in your area, the larger your water-scarcity footprint.
The scientists found that the average Australian’s diet had a water-scarcity footprint of 362 liters per day. Snacks (小吃) — cookies, cakes and alcohol — accounted for 25 percent of the water-scarcity footprint. The research also included a glass of wine (41 liters), a single serving of potato chips (23 liters), and a small bar of milk chocolate (21 liters).
Not surprisingly, cutting out snacks would be the NO.1 priority if you wanted to lower your own water-scarcity footprint.
Earth's surface is 70 percent water, but only 2.5 percent of that can be used for drinking or farming. By 2030, a world of about 8.6 billion people will need 35 percent more water, 40 percent more energy, and 50 percent more food, according to the United States National Intelligence Council. So, we need to watch what we eat, not just for our personal health but for the health of our societies.
28. What did the recent study closely focus on
A. Modern agriculture. B. Average Australians.
C. Water resources. D. Water-scarcity footprints.
29. What did scientists from CSIRO find in their study
A. Sweet teeth lead to thin waistlines.
B. Australians' diets are mainly made up of snacks.
C. The water-scarcity footprint is a measurement of saving water.
D. Lacking water in our area means a larger water-scarcity foot print.
30. What does the underlined part "the N0.1 priority" in Paragraph 5 probably mean
A. the least important thing B. the least impossible thing
C. something to be done first D. something to be prevented first
31. What does the last paragraph intend to tell us
A. Take care of our diets. B. Protect our drinking water.
C. Make good use of energy. D. Produce more healthy food.
D
Some big scientific discoveries aren't actually discovered but borrowed. That’s what happened when scientists discovered proteins from an unlikely lender: green algae (绿藻), whose cells are decorated with proteins that can sense light.
The light-sensing protein promised the power to control neurons (神经元) by providing a way to turn them on and off. Such ability, first noticed in 2002, quickly caught the attention of brain scientists: Nerve cells which were genetically engineered to produce such proteins become light-controlled. A flash of light could cause a quiet neuron to send signals or force an active neuron to fall silent. “This is the light sensor that we needed," says Zhuo Hua Pau, a scientist searching for a way to control vision cells in mice's eyes. The method is now called optogenetics (光遗传学).
In Pan’s lab, light-responsive proteins restored vision in mice with damaged eyesight, a finding that has now led to a medical test on people. Optogenetics’ promise wasn't clear in early days, as scientists were first learning how to use these proteins in neurons. “At that time, no one expected that this optogenetic work would have such a huge impact," Pan says.
The algae's light sensors have been adopted for use in countless brain research fields. Talia, another scientist, uses optogenetics to study connections between cells in the mouse brain. The method allows her to comb the relationships between cells that produce and respond to dopamine (多巴胺), which might help uncover details about motivation and learning.
So far, optogenetics research has taken place mostly in mice. But findings into more complex brains like human brain may soon be confirmed. “We are definitely on the tip of uncovering some fascinating principles of the human brain, such as how the brain transforms signals from the eyes into perceptions," says Yasmine of Columbia University.
No matter what happens next in this swiftly moving field, one thing is certain: Brain scientists will be forever in the algae's debt.
32. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A. The origin of neurons. B. The discovery of green algae.
C. The varieties of neurons. D. The inspiration from green algae.
33 . What can we learn from Pan’s research
A. Damaged eyesight is likely to be restored.
B. The findings are used to cure brain diseases.
C. Relationships between cells have been found.
D. The light-sensing protein is the key to the brain.
34. What’s Yasmine’s attitude towards the future of her research
A. Cautious. B. Confident. C. Critical. D. Unclear.
