Most people in their 50s enjoy nothing more than a bit of peace and comfort, but that is not the case for Wang Jiangang, a man in his late fifties.
Wang, 59 now, was born and raised in Beijing. He said he has everything a man could want — a flat, a car, a successful business, and a happy family. However, Wang decided to plant trees in the Gobi Desert (戈壁沙漠). Now, he has lived in the desert in Inner Mongolia for about 7 years.
In June 2015, Wang went to Ejina of Inner Mongolia with his team. On the day they arrived, they got caught in a sandstorm. The sky got dark and was filled with sand. They had to hide in the cars, waiting for the sandstorm to stop. When the sandstorm finally stopped, he found there was nothing in the desert — no road, no grass.
Wang and his team started digging and planting trees in the same year. For years, they couldn't set up tents (帐篷) because of the heavy sandstorms, they had to drive about 200 kilometres to buy machine parts when their machines broke down, and they didn't even have enough water. But Wang didn't back down.
So far, Wang's team of about 100 workers has planted 20,666 hectares (公顷) of trees in the desert. The first group of trees has grown to 2 metres high, and one tree can fix 10 square metres of sand. Since 2015, he has invested (投资) more than 100 million yuan.
“I've always wanted to achieve (完成) something big. That's why I decided to create a forest in the desert,” Wang said. “Human life is short, but trees can live for up to thousands of years. They will benefit (使受益) our children and our children's children.”

I used to work on cruise ships (游轮) as a musician and travelled a lot. I got up early, drove to the airport, flew across the world, and got on a ship just to get to work! Then I spent 3 to 14 days on it. The ships were great. The food was excellent, and the staff (全体职工) were wonderful people. We stopped at fantastic places, and I often spent the afternoon on the beach drinking. But there were disadvantages too. I didn't know anyone on the ships, although the passengers all knew me. Of course, I had to talk to them politely even when I didn't feel like talking.
Now, everything has changed. The cruise ships aren't running, and I've been in my flat for a year. I never spent much time here, and I seldom (很少) spent a whole year in England after I began to work about twenty years ago! But I enjoy my life now. I have bought a bike and found some great coffee shops on the beach. I've also bought a big truck and driven around the coast. I found some beautiful places on the beach last year, and I could park in some of them and run straight (径直) into the sea! There are not many tourists and they are more peaceful than the fantastic places where the cruise ships went.
I'm spending a lot more time alone now. I have developed good relationships with people who I didn't use to know very well. I used to think that people who only live in one place were boring. But since last year, I've got to meet some kind and caring people! That's been valuable.
1. The writer used to get up early, drive to the airport, take a(n) _______, and then get on a ship just to get to work!
2. The writer had to talk to the passengers politely even when he didn't _______.
3. The writer seldom spent a whole year in England over the past _______.

Good afternoon, everyone! My family and I do small things to improve the environment.
First, we use public transport often. My parents drive their cars less and ride shared-bikes more. I take a bus to school. Second, we save water by turning off the water while washing vegetables and fruit in a bowl of water instead of leaving the water running. We also save water by reusing it. For example, when my mother finishes washing the clothes, she uses the water to clean the floor. Last but not least, we try to reuse things. For example, when my mother goes shopping, she always takes home-made bags which are made out of our old clothes. As for my father, he uses a china cup instead of a paper cup to drink water.
That's all. Thanks for listening!
