Jazz is a kind of music in which improvisation (即兴创作) is typically an important part. In most jazz performances, players play solos which they make up on site, which requires considerable skills. There is great variety in jazz, but most jazz is very rhythmic (有节奏的), and uses “blue” notes. You can often hear “call-and-response” patterns in jazz, in which one instrument, voice, or part of the band answers another. Jazz can express many different emotions, from pain to joy. In jazz, you may hear the sounds of freedom, for the music has been a powerful voice for people suffering unfair treatment because of the colour of the skin.
Jazz musicians place a high value on finding their own sound and style, and that means, for example, that trumpeter (号手) Miles Davis sounds very different from trumpeter Louis Armstrong. Jazz musicians like to play their songs in their own styles, and so you might listen to a dozen of different jazz recordings of the same song, but each will sound different.
Jazz developed in the United States in the very early part of the 20th century. New Orleans, near the mouth of the Mississippi River, played a key role in this development. The city’s population was more different than anywhere else in the South. People of African, French, Caribbean, Italian, German, Mexican, and American Indian, as well as English, descent (血统) mixed with one another. African-American musical traditions mixed with others and gradually jazz emerged (产生) from a mixture of marches, blues, and other kinds of music.
At first jazz was mostly for dancing. After the first recordings of jazz were made in 1917, the music spread widely and developed rapidly. At the same time, jazz spread from the United States to many parts of the world, and today jazz musicians and jazz festivals can be found in dozens of nations. Jazz is one of the United States’ greatest exports to the world.
28. What is a typical part of jazz
A. Players create music on site. B. It’s only performed indoors.
C. Players sing in different ways. D. It only expresses painful feelings.

C. Traditional value. D. A perfect timing.
31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. The Development of Modern Music B. A Report About African American
C. A Brief Introduction to Jazz D. Jazz Festivals in the US
D
We always hear that texting is a disaster. The idea is that texting leads to the fall of any kind of serious literacy, or at least writing ability, among young people in the United States and now the whole world today. The fact of the matter is that it just isn’t true. In order to see that actually texting is a magical thing, a kind of emergent complexity (复杂) that we’re seeing happening right now, we have to look at what language really is, in which case, one thing that we see is that texting is not writing at all.
Basically, if we think about language, language has existed for at least 80,000 years, and it arose as speech. People talked. That’s what we’re probably genetically specified for. That’s how we use language most. Writing is something that came along much later. There’s a little bit of controversy (争议) as to exactly when that happened, but according to traditional opinions, if humanity had existed for 24 hours, then writing only came along at about 11:07 p.m.
Now don’t get me wrong. Writing has certain advantages. When you write, because it’s a conscious (有意识的) process, because you can look backwards, you can do things with language that are much less likely if you’re just talking.
Informal speech is something quite different, Linguists (语言学家) have actually shown that when we’re speaking informally in an unmonitored way, we tend to speak in word packets of maybe 7 to 10 words. You’ll notice this if you ever have occasion to record yourself or a group of people talking. That’s what speech is like. Speech is much freer. It’s much more telegraphic. It’s much less reflective-very different from writing. So we naturally tend to think, because we see language written so often, that that’s what language is, but actually what language is, is speech. They are two things.
Now of course, as history has gone by, it’s been natural for there to be a certain amount of bleed between speech and writing.
32. Why do some people think texting is a disaster
A. It reduces people’s ability to write.
B. It has no benefits to people’s health.
C. It is hard to understand its complexity.
D. It makes people addicted to cellphones.
33. What does the underlined word “arose” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Served. B. Responded. C. Appeared. D. Performed.
34. What mainly makes writing differ from speech
A. It is easy to process. B. It helps people think deeply.
C. It’s about the nature of language. D. It has more strengths than speech.
35. What is mostly to be discussed in the paragraph that follows
A. The history of language. B. More details about writing.
C. The importance of formal speech. D. The relationship between speech and writing
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Setting a new personal max is a great way to chart your progress toward your fitness goals. 36 One useful step is to improve VO, max (最大摄氧量), which is a measure of how much oxygen your body can take in and use during exercise. The more oxygen your body can put to use while you work out, the better your performance will be, whether you’re running a long-distance race or playing a sport like tennis or soccer.
37 The first is to build up your aerobic (有氧) base, which is achieved by doing a lot of lower-intensity (低强度) aerobic work. In running, that would mean a lot of long, slow miles, with the goal of building up your distance over time. Doing this increases your overall aerobic capacity (容量), which in turn will help your body be much better at taking in and using oxygen.
Exercise physiologist and Ironman coach Alan Couzens is rich in his experience working with athletes. 38 In it he claims that the largest gains in VO: max tend to come when their training plan includes a lot of lower-intensity aerobic work.
In addition to these long, slow miles, you’ll want to add to some more traditional “VO2 max” workouts, which feature short bursts of high-intensity work at 90-95% of your maximum heart rate. 39
However, although it can be attractive (and feel good) to push yourself every time you exercise, high-intensity intervals (间歇) should only contain a small percentage of your overall workout routine. 40 As Jason Fitzgerald wrote for Outside Magazine, you should avoid long-time work at a VO2 max level, as it is tough on the body. Instead, he advises, “Save most of these intense, specific workouts for the final step of training when you’re sharpening for a race.”
A. So what’s the easiest way to do that
B. What is the VO2 max that is accepted during exercise
C. He has had a well-known post in a blog for SimpliFaster.
D. These short, intense bursts will help further push your body’s abilities.
E. There are two general strategies that are helpful for improving your VO2 Max.
F. If your performance improves, that’s a sign that your VO2 max has improved too.
G. If you are preparing for a race, for example, you want to avoid overdoing them too soon.

Simon transferred (转学) to the school which Jerry attended after his parents’ business closed down. Jerry had met Simon long before. After all, his mother once worked as the housekeeper in the large house that was Simon’s home. Since young, Jerry had looked at all that Simon had with envy and anger. Jerry’s mother ensured that Jerry treated Simon’s family with politeness, unaware that each time she made him do so, her young son’s hatred increased.
Jerry was seen as the leader in class, being the captain of the school soccer team. The other students looked on him as their hero. When Simon transferred to the school, Jerry knew that it was payback time. He would show Simon that he was the superior one, even without all the trappings of wealth. Thus, he always tried to ensure Simon was unwelcome in his class. He always said, “Sometimes, we have to treat people unkindly for their own good.”
One day, Jerry’s teammate ran to him with the message that his form teacher and soccer coach wanted to see him in the teachers’ office. Jerry ran to the teachers’ office. The expressions on the faces of his form teacher and coach worried him. He sat down quietly, hoping that the worst would not happen. He knew that he had not managed to get the minimum score required for a school athlete to remain in the school team. But he was confident that his superb performance in the soccer team would overcome all those poor results. The look on their faces showed that he was mistaken.
As he left the office, Jerry was upset. How was he to achieve the results required by the school before they would let him play in the game due to start in a month’s time To catch up on all his schoolwork in a month was clearly impossible. His mother would never be able to afford a private teacher and he had no good friends who were capable of helping him.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Just then, Jerry saw Simon and he brightened up. After a long stop, Simon’s voice rang out loud and clear.

第一节 应用文写作(满分15分)
One possible version:
The Person I Admire Most
Dear fellow students,
There are many respectable people around us. The person I admire most is Wu Lei.
Wu Lei, who is my favourite athlete, was born in Nanjing. He is the youngest player in the history of professional football in China. In 2020 and 2022, he won the Golden Globe Award for two successive years.
To my way of thinking. Wu Lei has set me a good example. What impresses me most is that although he once had himself injured, he never lost his desire to play football. The truth he shows me is that I should have a down-to-earth spirit and keep fighting to realize my dream, even if there are many difficulties.
That’s all. Thank you.
第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
One possible version:
Just then, Jerry saw Simon and he brightened up. Simon was the top boy in his class and would surely be able to help him. Jerry’s smile broadened even more as he thought of how thankful Simon would be to be given a chance to help a popular boy in class. Jerry walked quickly over to Simon and put forward his proposal to Simon that he should stay back in school after lessons every day to help Jerry achieve the required results. Jerry was confident that Simon would agree.
After a long stop, Simon’s voice rang out loud and clear. “Thank you for your kind offer, Jerry. But I’m afraid I cannot help you. You may think that I’m unkind, but sometimes, we have to treat people unkindly for their own good.” With that, he turned around and walked away, leaving a shocked Jerry in the corridor. Jerry realized he had hurt Simon deeply. Without hesitation, Jerry ran up to Simon and said sorry sincerely. Sensing Jerry’s sincerity, Simon forgave him.
