As I worked with older students aged from 16 to 18. I also noticed that they had a lot more subjects than I did 18 their age. Giving gifts is a common thing for human beings. But the world is so big that the customs of gift giving are different in every country. Let's take a look at the interesting traditions around the world.
In the US, a set of kitchen knives seems like a perfect gift for a wedding or a holiday. However, in some European countries like Germany, superstition(迷信)says that a knife presented as a gift will cut off your friendship. There's a well-known Italian wedding tradition that the groom's(新郎的) tie is cut into a number of little pieces. Wedding guests can then "buy" these tie pieces in cash(现金). It's a fun way to give money to the bride (新娘)and groom that leaves guests with a wedding souvenir.
Vodka(伏特加)might seem the most suitable gift for a Russian, but a lot of them would see it as an unimaginative(缺乏想象力的) gift. Many even think the idea is silly. In Germany, flowers are good gifts to take to your dinner hostess. But don't take her red roses, because it means you are in love with her. Don't take thirteen of anything, either.
( )26.In which country is it unwise to give sharp things as gifts
A. Italy. B. America. C. Russia. D. Germany.
( )27.What can we know about giving gifts
A. It is imaginative to give a Russian Vodka as a gift.
B. It is polite to give thirteen roses to your German hostess.
C. Italian guests can get a tie as a wedding souvenir(纪念品) for free.
D. A set of kitchen knives can be a suitable wedding gift in America.
( )28.In which part of a magazine can we read the text
A. Culture. B. Life. C. Food. D. Education.

If you go to a different country, you may get to know a different way of life. Here are stories of three young people when they first went to the US.
John: I still remember when I first went to the US three years ago, everything was new to me. When I met my host mother at the airport, she asked, "Do you want to go to the bathroom " I was not sure what she was asking. I thought the bathroom meant a shower, so I answered, "No, I forgot to take the soap (肥皂)!" Later I knew the bathroom meant a toilet.
Eric: Before I went to the US, I thought that everything in the US was large — tall people, big meals and large clothes. When I first got to my school, I was surprised by the size of the school — there was only one building with three floors. And there were fewer than 500 students in the school. Then I went into the dormitory (学生宿舍) and met my little 13-year-old roommate Jason. The room was also very small. However, in the small dormitory, I made good friends with my roommate and my classmates and had a great time there.
Linda: Every country has different cultures. I, a girl from Thailand, didn't know much about American culture. All I knew was from books and movies. So when I first went to the US, I was surprised by something. For example, when I first met my host family, they hugged me. People in my country only hug when they know each other very well.

C(2022·河北石家庄石门实验学校期中改编)
Do you sometimes feel different, alone or left out Recently scientists have done a survey(调查) about being alone among people aged from 3 to 60. It shows that teenagers have great needs to feel like they belong to a group. But being a loner doesn't always mean being strange or disliked. In fact, it has become a lifestyle in many countries among young people who consider(考虑) being alone to be an everyday part of life.
In South Korea, there are a growing number of people who describe themselves as "honjok". The word comes from "hon"(alone) and "jok" (tribe). These people eat alone, travel alone, and enjoy being by themselves.
In Japan, people have developed a strong loner culture over the years. There are solo karaoke bars and solo cafes. Ramen restaurants for solo diners are especially popular. Clapboards(隔板)separate(隔离) each seat. Diners can't see the faces of other customers or waiters. But knowing that there are other solo diners may make you feel better. More importantly, you can try to find strength in your aloneness.
Aloneness gives you time to look inside yourself or think about something without distraction(使人分心的事). Therefore, when you are alone next time, instead of finding someone to talk to or hang out with, you may try to learn a new skill or develop a hobby. You can start by walking in a park or visiting a museum alone. It may seem strange and boring at first. But be patient. Give it time. You may finally find the beauty of being alone.
( )32.Who might be more afraid of being alone
A. A 3-year-old baby. B. A 15-year-old teenager.
C. A 35-year-old mother. D. A 70-year-old man.
( )33.What do we know from the passage
A. Strange people are all loners.
B. Aloneness may help people feel strong.
C. There aren't solo karaoke bars in South Korea.
D. People in South Korea have developed a strong loner culture.
( )34.The structure of the passage may be .
A. B.
C. D.
D
Many people love travelling to different countries. If you plan to go abroad, you should know how to behave in different situations around the world.
Most travellers enjoy meeting new people, but sometimes you can be rude without saying anything. In Russia, you should never shake hands in a doorway, and if you're travelling in Thailand, never touch people's heads or point your feet at people. When the Japanese meet new people, they like giving business cards — but you should read the card carefully, not just put it in your pocket.
In most countries in Europe people expect a lot of eye contact when you talk to them, but in many Asian countries a lot of eye contact seems unfriendly. And in South America people usually stand quite close to each other when they talk, but in countries like the USA you need to give people more personal space. Also, it's rude to interrupt the Japanese people while they are talking to you.You must wait until they finish before you start speaking.
In restaurants in the UK, it's not OK to start smoking before other people finish eating, so you mustn't do it.When in India, remember to eat with your right hand. Also avoid leaving empty bottles on the dinner table in Russia — that's bad luck.
When you're travelling in Asia, if someone invites you to his or her home, don't forget to take off your shoes when you arrive. And if you visit a family's home in some Asian countries, don't admire anything valuable because your host will feel he should give it to you as a present.
With so much to think about, it's not surprising that many people prefer going on holiday in their own countries — or you might just decide to stay at home!
( )35.What does the underlined word "interrupt" mean in Chinese

People all over the world are now taking action to fight against COVID-19. But how they respond (应对) may depend on their own cultures and traditions. Let's take a look.
Daily habits can make a big difference to your health. According to the World Health Organization, 60% of people's health problems are related to everyday hygiene(卫生) habits. As COVID-19 spreads across the world, governments and organizations in many countries have suggested that people should pay more attention to their daily hygiene habits.
In China, for example, people usually share dishes together at the dining table. But this habit has a high risk of spreading illnesses through saliva (唾液). To fight against COVID-19, many cities in China, including Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, have called on people to order separate meals or use serving chopsticks to take their food. Many people also suggest that Chinese people should keep these habits after the outbreak.
In the US, people are asked to develop healthy hygiene habits. For example, people should cover their mouth and nose with a tissue (纸巾) when they cough or sneeze or use the inside of their elbow(肘)instead of their hands.
According to a survey by YouGov, a British market research company, many Americans have taken action to change their daily habits to live a healthy life.

I'm very glad to hear that you're coming to China for a short stay. I wish you a good time with the help of my advice.
When you visit a Chinese family, it's a good idea to bring some small gifts like fruits and flowers. Usually Chinese people will give you a present in return. If so, you must accept it with both hands. Remember not to open it immediately. During the Spring Festival, try not to break anything. If you do, say "suisuiping'an", which means "be safe all the time". And you can also greet your friends by saying nice words like "gongxifacai". Besides, don't clean the room on the first day of Chinese New Year. We think it will sweep away good luck.
I hope what I say can help you. Enjoy your stay!
