It was 3∶12 a.m.when nineyear-old Glenn Kreamer awoke to the smell of burning.Except for the crackling(爆裂声)of flames somewhere below there was not a sound in the two-storey house at Baldwin,Long Island. With his father away on night duty at a local factory,Glenn was worried about the safety of his mother.his sister Karen,14 and his 12-year-old brother Todd.He ran downstairs through the smoke-filled house to push and pull Karen and Todd until they sat up.Then he helped each one through the house to the safety of the garden. There, his sister and brother.taking short and quick breaths and coughing, collapsed on the lawn.
The nine-year-old raced back into the house and upstairs to his mother’s room.He found it impossible to wake her up.Mrs.Kreamer,a victim of the smoke, was unconscious, and there was nobody to help Glenn carry her to the garden. But the boy remained calm and,as a fireman said later,“acted with all the self-control of a trained adult”.
On the bedroom telephone, luckily still working, Glenn called his father and, leaving Mr.Kreamer to telephone the fire brigade and ambulance service, got on with the task of saving his mother.
First he filled a bucket with water from the bathroom and threw water over his mother and her bed. Then, with a wet cloth around his head he went back to the garden.
He could hear the fire engine coming up,but how would the firemen find his mother in the smoke-filled house where flames had almost swallowed up the ground floor?
Grasping firmly a ball of string(绳)from the garage,Glenn raced back into the house and dashed upstairs to his mother’s room.Tying one end of the string to her hand,he ran back, laying out the string as he went, through the hall and back out into the garden.
Minutes later he was telling fire chief John Coughlan:“The string will lead you to Mother.”Mrs.Kreamer was carried to safety as the flames were breaking through her bedroom floor.

Chinese are very generous when it comes to educating their children. Not caring about the money, parents often send their children to the best schools or even abroad to England, the USA or Australia. They also want their children to take extra courses or activities where they will either learn a musical instrument or ballet, or other classes that will give them a head start in life. ___1___ So parents will spend unreasonable amount of money on education.___2___
However, what most parents fail to see is that the best education they can give their children is usually very cheap.
Parents can see that their children's skills vary. Some children are skilled in some areas while poor in others. ___3___
The problem is that parents are only educating their children on how to take multiple-choice tests and how to study well, but not teaching them the most important skills:they need to be confident, happy and clever.
Parents can achieve this by teaching practical skills like cooking, sewing and doing other housework.
Teaching a child to cook will improve many of the skills that he will need later in life. ___4___ It is an enjoyable but difficult experience. A good cook always tries to improve his cooking, so he will learn to work hard and gradually finish his job successfully. The result, a well-cooked dinner, will give him much satisfaction and a lot of confidence.
Some old machines, such as a broken radio or TV set that you give your child to play with will make him curious and arouse his interest. He will spend hours looking at them, trying to fix them; your child might become an engineer when he grows up. ___5___ And that is more important.
A.The Chinese believe that the more expensive an education is, the better it is.
B.These activities are teaching a child not only to read a book, but also to think, to use his mind.
C.What most parents fail to realize is that today's children lack self-respect and self-confidence.
D.Even poor couples will buy a computer for their son or daughter.
E.Studying extra courses needs much more money than school study.
F.Cooking demands patience and time.
G.Many parents don't want their children to cook for them.

Let Us Walk or Bike to School
Schools are encouraging students to go to school on foot or by bike instead of taking their parents’ cars. This is good for the students themselves, the transportation and the environment.
Nowadays, many students go to school in their parents’ cars, but this can cause many problems like traffic jams and pollution. Walking or biking to school has many benefits. First of all, it is good for your health because you have a chance to do regular exercise. Second, you will become more independent without having to rely on your parents to get to school, and also you can get a good view of the city in which you have lived for many years. Moreover, with more students walking or biking to school, there will be less traffic around the school. Finally, if fewer students choose to be driven to school, it will reduce the amount of pollution in the air, which is better for the environment.
