Last Saturday, I went to a coffee shop to meet a friend of mine. I got there ten minutes earlier.
So I ordered a cup of coffee and sat by the window, watching people. There were some boys playing football on the street and a small boy was running after the ball as it rolled across the road.
Suddenly, there came a car. It was going very fast. When the driver saw the boy in his way, he braked hard. But it was too late... The small boy was lying on the street without moving. To everyone’s surprise, the car didn’t stop. It drove away quickly.
People ran to the boy. There was a cut on the boy’s head and he lost a lot of blood. The coffee shop owner telephoned the police. Soon an ambulance (救护车) arrived and took the boy to the hospital. At 6 :30 pm, the police arrived and started questioning people. About half an hour later, they asked me to go to the police station because I saw everything. I gave them all the information I knew because I really wanted them to catch the driver. I didn’t leave the police station until 8 :00 p.m. After that I went home because I didn’t want to talk to anyone. The next day, the boy’s parents called me to say thanks. They also told me their boy was fine and the driver was at the police station now.

Musician Wang Yinrui used everything at home, such as boxes, bottles and brooms, to play music in lockdown. His
experiment turned into a video called “Rhythm at Home” that went viral across Chinese social media platforms. It has more than 12,000 thumbs ups on the WeChat video account of the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra alone. Later, Wang came back with a second video called “Music/Pleasure at Home” . This time, he invited his wife Liu Xuexian, a pipa performer, to have fun together.
“I had the idea of the first video not long after the lockdown began, when my neighbors and friends felt upset at times,” Wang told Shangiai Daily, “I just wanted to cheer them up, maybe even just for a laugh. I never expected to be famous. But that’s good, my video makes many people happy, even just for a few seconds or minutes.”
Wang first tried his hands at kitchenware (厨房用具) back in 2020, when the pandemic first broke out and concerts were canceled for months. He wasn’t good at cooking, and instead, got more interested in the sounds of the cooking ware when he messed up. He made 15-second short videos back then, later he bought some recording tools at home, and got a lot of good ideas that helped him to improve his beats during this long lockdown.
“For musicians like me, I feel like something is missing in life when there is no performance, no stage,” he said, “when I practise at home, there is no audience (观众) and it doesn’t feel the same.”
In fact, there were lots of audience viewing his short videos online. “I want to encourage people to live with a positive attitude in lockdown. Let’s look on the bright side and help each other. I’m sure we can get through the most difficult times together.” Wang said.
When Wang posted his first video, which started with the scene and sound of rice in a pot, a lot of viewers asked the same question—what happened to the pot after that Did it get sticky ”

“Breakfast’s on!” Mom called. I put on my sweater. My blue jeans had holes on the knees, like badges(徽章) of courage. My shirt was red. My socks were white and my shoes were black. My mom was color-blind, and my dad had no idea what was fashion. So I was all right.
It’s funny, sometimes, when you look at the people who brought you into this world and you see yourself so clearly in them. You realize that every person in the world is a compromise( 妥 协 ) of nature. I had my mother’s small-boned frame and her dark brown hair, but my father had given me his blue eyes and his sharp-bridged nose. Sometimes I got nervous talking to people so I stayed quiet. In my fantasies, though, I walked along with the cowboys and detectives who parade past us on the television, and out in the woods that came up behind our house. One thing I do know I got from my grandpa Jaybird, his curiosity about the world. Although he was seventy-six years old, he brought home things that made Grandma Sarah often shout, snake-skins and animals he’d found dead. One time he hung up a dead toad(蟾蜍) from a tree and invited me to watch the flies eat it. Maybe he was crazy. Maybe crazy is what they call anybody who’s got magic in them after they’re no longer a child.
On that morning before the sun, as I sat eating my breakfast with Dad and Mom in our house, the year was 1964. All I knew at that moment was that I needed another glass of orange juice.
So when breakfast was over and the dishes were cleared, after I had gone out into the cold to say good morning to Rebel and feed him. Mom kissed both Dad and me, I put on my jacket and got my schoolbooks and we went off in the old truck.
And there was Zephyr town before us, the town quiet in its dreaming, the moon in the sky.

Daniel, Sandy and Simon are in the lab.
Simon: Let’s do an experiment (实验). I fill a jar (罐子) with water. I cover the top with a piece of cardboard (纸板)
and hold it there. Then I turn the jar upside down and take my hand off the cardboard. Can you guess what will happen
Daniel: I think the floor will get wet. We should do this experiment outside, Simon.
Sandy: I think the cardboard will hold the water.
Daniel: I don’t think so.
Sandy: You think the water will pour out, Daniel. I think the water will stay in the jar. Let’s do the experiment to test whose opinion is correct.
Simon: Good idea, Sandy. That is called the scientific method.
Sandy: I am so sure of my opinion that Simon can do the, experiment over your head and I know you won’t get wet.
Daniel: Well, let’s try.
Simon: Are you ready, Daniel
Daniel: No! Wait! (He puts on a raincoat and sits down.) Now I think I’m ready.
Sandy: Simon, take your hand off the cardboard.
Daniel: No!
(Daniel closes his eyes lightly (紧紧地), and Simon takes his hand off the cardboard. The water stays in the jar.) Sandy: See, Daniel!
Daniel: How is that possible
Simon: The force of the air keeps the water in the jar. It is strong enough to hold the water.
Daniel: Wow!
Simon: So what have we discovered
Sandy: We have discovered the air pressure helps the cardboard hold the water in the jar.
Simon: Right. What conclusion (总结) do you draw, Daniel

Do you still hug your parents How do you feel when you hug them When do you need a hug the most
It was a cold November morning several years ago. My alarm clock had just gone off, but I was having trouble getting out of bed. My dad had died a few weeks before. I felt weighed down by sadness and depression.
Tough and strong, my dad had worked so hard all of his life to support us. He would sometimes shout at my brothers and me, but I always knew that he loved me. Still, he had been raised (养育) in a traditional way and raised us that way too. I couldn’t remember, for example, ever being hugged by him.
After my mom and grandma passed away, my dad moved into grandma’s home. I was so happy to have him close by. I would often visit him and just talk with him about life. But we still seldom touched and never hugged. Finally his own health began to rapidly fail and within a few months he left us. It was a cold morning when we had his service (追悼会), but I was too cold inside myself to feel it. I couldn’t remember when we’d had our last hug. I sighed (叹气) and got out ofmy bed. I turned on the lights and walked into the hallway. I saw my son Jim walking down the hall to meet me. Suddenly, he opened his arms and gave me a heart-felt hug. And just as he did, I heard my dad’s voice deep inside of me say, “Joey, this hug is from me!” I cried and smiled at the same time. In that moment, in the place where heart, mind, and spirit all meet, I felt loved. I felt loved by my dad. I felt loved by life.

When I started teaching in a middle school, I was sure I would change the world and touch children who needed love. Although most of my students seemed to respond pretty well to my teaching, there was a small group of teenage girls who became more and more hostile (敌意的) towards me.
One day a fight happened in my classroom. Trying to stop it, I stepped in to face one of those hostile girls, who started hitting me in the face. Two boys jumped up to control the girl, but the injury (伤害) was done. While the girl
was suspended (停课) for a few days, I was determined (决定) that she would not return to my classroom. But I also prayed ( 企 盼). I wanted to see all the students right there in my daily work at school. On the top of my daily teaching-plan book, I wrote this statement, “To see all the children in my classroom is always beautiful.” With this view I could expect to heal (治愈) any anger towards the girl in my heart. After her suspension, she returned to my classroom. I learnt the girl’s mother was trying to raise six children after her husband died in a car accident. The mother and I agreed to work together to help her eldest daughter.
There were no more incidents (事件) of anger the rest of the year. In fact, in the following seven years I was still working at that school. I taught all six of this family’s children. When the youngest child was in my class, the mother told me, “Our family loves you. Every year one of my kids says, ‘I hope I’m in her classroom!’”

The little tree held out its tiny leaves. It looked so sad. It continued, “If those trees were gone, I’d be able to grow. A year from now, I’d be the biggest tree here. But for now, I’m just a small tree.”
The man thought for a while and agreed. He walked over to the bigger trees and started cutting them down. Soon, he cleared lots of space around the small tree. Now it would be able to feel the sun and wind. It would grow bigger and become the biggest tree in that area.
But something else happened instead. The sun’ s heat came first, burning the small tree, which wasn’t used to so much sunlight. Heavy wind and rain came without the bigger trees to protect it. the small tree was hit by the storm. Soon, the tree was nearly dead.
“You’ve been quite foolish,” said a snake that saw what had happened. “You brought this on yourself. If you’d left the bigger trees alone, the sun and storm wouldn’t have hurt you so badly. They protected you. If you had just waited longer, you would’ve grown to be just as big as them. You’d be strong. But now, you’re nearly gone.”

根据文中第一段“They’re blocking the sun. It is so crowded here that I have no room to spread my roots. I can’t feel the wind.”可知这些大一些的树木挡住了太阳。这里太拥挤了, 我连根都没有地方 扎。我感觉不到风。可见 blocking 的意思是遮挡,阻碍。故选 C 。 15.【解析】推理判断题。根据文中第二段“It looked so sad. It continued, “If those trees were gone, I’d be able to grow. A year from now, I’d be the biggest tree here. But for now, I’m just a small tree.”” 根据文中第四段“The sun’s heat came first, burning the small tree... Heavy wind and rain came without the bigger trees to protect it. the small tree was hit by the storm. Soon, the tree was nearly dead.” 根据文中第五段““You’ve been quite foolish,” said a snake that saw what had happened. “You brought this on yourself…”可知一条看到事情经过的蛇说小树太蠢了, 这是你自找的。可见蛇 认为是小树自己的错。故选 B 。 18.【解析】推理判断题。根据文中第五段“Ifyou’d left the bigger trees alone, the sun and storm wouldn’t have hurt you so badly. They protected you. If you had just waited longer, you would’ve grown to be just as big as them. You’d be strong.”可知如果你不去管那些大树,太阳和暴风雨就不会对你造成这么严重的伤害。他们保护你。 如果你再等一段时间, 你就会长得跟他们一样大了。你会坚强。可见小树从中学到不要恩将仇报。故选 A。
Music produces a kind of pleasure that human nature cannot do without, according to an ancient Chinese thinker. In
fact, “pleasure” and “music” share the same Chinese character, pronounced as “le” for pleasure and “yue” for music.
Musician Wang Yinrui used everything at home, such as boxes, bottles and brooms, to play music in lockdown. His experiment turned into a video called “Rhythm at Home” that went viral across Chinese social media platforms.
“It got a little sticky at first, but then it’s okay,” Wang concluded, “everyone is allowed to have some fun at home, just be careful not to disturb your neighbors.”

A man named Randy in Canada liked to hunt for trees. He looked for big trees and old trees in Canada. He made maps to show where these trees were. He did not want to cut them down. Actually he wanted people to take care of them.
Ancient trees are today rare (稀少的) everywhere in the world. On Vancouver Island in Canada, there are so many big trees. The biggest trees are about 800 years old. They are the survivors of a forest fire. The fire brought damage (损害) to the area about 350 years ago. Randy was told of a very tall tree on Vancouver Island. The tree was said to be 314 feet tall. That would make it the tallest tree in Canada. Randy set out to find the tree.
But someone else found it first. It was found by a logger—a person whose job is to cut down trees. The loggers wanted to cut down Canada’s tallest tree and all the trees around it.
Randy made a path (小路) in the forest in order that people could see the tall tree. The tree was so big and beautiful that even more and more people wanted to save that forest. Thanks to these people, that forest is now a park. Canada’s tallest tree is still there.
There may still be a bigger tree out there. Maybe you will find it. But there are only a few old forests left in Canada. Many are still at risk of being cut down.
26 .Why did Randy make maps
A .To look for more big trees. B .To show the positions of the big and old trees.
C .To cut trees down later. D .To help loggers.
27 .The underlined word “survivor” means ________ in Chinese.
A.受益者 B.制造者 C.控制者 D.幸存者
28 .What did the loggers want to do with Canada’s tallest tree
A .They wanted to take care of it. B .They wanted to save it.
C .They wanted to cut it down. D .They wanted to know its height.
29 .Which of the following is NOT true
A .Randy is from Canada. B .The fire happened about 350 years ago.
C .Randy made a path in the forest D .Canada’s tallest tree is cut down now.
30 .What happened to the forest according to the passage
A .It has disappeared. B .It became a park.
C .It was not famous anymore. D .The passage doesn’t mention it.

We all know that sports and exercise are important parts of staying healthy, but they can also be life-changing in other ways.
Hussein, a 19-year-old boy from England, had autism (自闭症) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (多 动症) at an early age. His schoolmates often made fun of him, as he had problems with his sports skills. But when he was 14, Hussein was introduced to the world of wrestling (摔跤) , and his obsession with it soon made a big difference to his life. Hussein’s mother got him to take Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ,巴西柔术) lessons. Although he has his physical and social challenges, Hussein practiced very hard and did well, and then he became more confident. His sports skills and physical health improved, and his skills in the sport developed. At his first BJJ competition, he won a bronze medal. “Sport has helped me, and I like helping people through sport because it can make anyone who’s really shy, really outgoing and confident,” Hussein told LiveWire, a local community organization.
After winning several more medals, Hussein started encouraging others in his school to join BJJ. His efforts paid off. He got a part-time job at a local gym and began teaching other students. He also set up a TikTok to encourage other students around the world with special needs to take part in sports. For his efforts, he won the 2022 Rotary Young Citizen Sporting Hero Award. In an interview with local newspaper the Warrington Guardian, Hussein expressed his happiness at his achievements and winning the award. “I really hope to continue to get others into sports no matter what their ability, background or age are.” he said.

“Breakfast’s on!” Mom called. I put on my sweater. My blue jeans had holes on the knees, like badges( 徽章) of courage.
35 .The following sentence should be put at the end of __________.
But grandpa lit a candle of wonder in me and by that light I could see a long way beyond Zephyr town.
A .Paragraph 2 B .Paragraph 3 C .Paragraph 4 D .Paragraph 5
36 .What do you think of the writer’s grandpa
A .Curious and energetic. B .Curious but impolite.
C .Strange but friendly. D .Creative and confident.
37 .What can we infer from the passage about the writer
A .He had a pet cat called Rebel.
B .He was a brave and outgoing boy.
C .He loved his grandpa but thought he was crazy.
D .He studied in Zephyr town which is far away from his home.

Daniel, Sandy and Simon are in the lab.
Simon: Let’s do an experiment (实验). I fill a jar (罐子) with water. I cover the top with a piece of cardboard (纸板) and hold it there.

A young man entered the last interview of a company. The director found that the young man’s academic grades were very good.
“Did you get any scholarships(奖学金) in school ” the director asked. “None,” the young man answered.
“Was it your father who paid for your school fees(学费) ” the director asked. “My father passed away when I was one year old, so it was my mother who paid for my school fees,” the young man answered.
“Where did your mother work ” the director asked. “My mother cleaned clothes,” the young man said. The director looked at the young man’s hands. He had a pair of smooth and perfect hands.
“Have you ever helped your mother wash the clothes before ” the director asked. “Never,” the young man answered. “I have a request,” the director said. “When you go back home today, go and clean your mother’s hands, and then see me tomorrow morning.”
The young man felt that his chance of getting the job was high. When he went back, he happily asked his mother to let him clean her hands. His mother felt strange, happy but with mixed feelings. Steven: We will live in peace in 2050. We will be able to go on a trip to other planets by spaceship and we will find other planets which humans can live on. We will probably find aliens! We will probably be able to see robots everywhere, like at home, in factories, and in hospitals. They will help to make our lives more comfortable.
Samuel: I think a lot of things will be different in 2050. But the world will still have a lot of pollution problems. We will need to find other resources (资源) because of the large population. Now the world’s population is about 7.7 billion and it will reach about 9.7 billion in 2050. We will also need to build more spaceships to go to the Moon and Mars, because we will have to get resources from these places.

Quan was born in the city of Zhanjiang in south China’s Guangdong Province in 2007. She started diving at the age of seven. In 2018, she joined the Guangdong Diving Team, spending three years there before breaking into the national team at the end of 2020.
He Weiyi is a diving coach at the Guangdong Provincial Sports Team. Up on the 10-meter platform, he said it was where Quan showed her talent.
“It looks high up here, but believe it or not, in just three years’ time, Quan could manage some very difficult sets of movements. Her development was much quicker than most athletes (运动 员 ) . I’d say she’s got outstanding talent.” said Coach He.
But Coach He said talent alone didn’t make sure of success. For Quan, hard work has been the key. “Quan practiced harder than other athletes around her age. She kept asking me whether her positions and flights were OK, whether she did well. She’d get unhappy if I couldn’t answer her at once,” he added.
“In fact, there was a set of positions she didn’t feel comfortable to do. But I think athletes are all trained to have a calm state of mind and self-confidence. I think her stable (沉稳的) mood really helped her to pull it off (圆满完 成) perfectly. And that helped her win the gold medal.”

根据短文内容,选择最佳答案。

The next day would be Christmas, and Della had only $1.87 to buy a gift for Jim. Now, there were only two possessions (财产). One was Jim’s gold watch from his grandfather. The other was Della’s hair.
She went to the street with tears. Then she saw a sign, “Hair Goods.”
“Will you buy my hair ” asked Della.
“I buy hair,” said the woman, “Take your hat off.”
“Twenty dollars,” said the woman.
“Give it to me quickly,” said Della.
The next two hours, she was searching through the stores for Jim’s gift. She found a watch chain (表链) at last. As soon as she saw it she knew that it must be Jim’s although it needed $21.
At about seven, Jim got home. “Jim, darling,” she cried, “don’t look at me that way. I had my hair cut off and sold. You don’t know what a nice gift I’ve got for you. Let’s be happy.”
“You’ve cut off your hair ” asked Jim.
“Cut it off and sold it,” said Della. “Don’t you like me just as well, anyhow ”
Jim took out a package and threw it upon the table.
“Don’t make any mistake, Della,” he said. “I don’t think there’s anything that could make me like my girl any less. But if you open that package, you may understand.”
After opening it, she burst into joy but then she cried. For there lay the set of combs (梳子) that Della had always wanted. They were expensive, she knew. And now, they were hers, but her hair was gone.
But she hugged him and said, “My hair grows fast, Jim!”
Jim had not yet seen his beautiful gift. She held it out to him. “Isn’t it wonderful, Jim You’ll look at the time a hundred times a day now. Give me your watch. I want to see how it looks on it.”
But Jim put his hands under the back of his head and said, “Let’s put our gifts away. I sold the watch to get the money to buy your combs.”

One day, while I was walking on the street, I heard the piano music and singing rising above the noise of the people. I stopped and saw a young lady sitting at a piano.
She was singing songs about love. The way she was singing made me a little comfortable. I stood there watching her playing on such a crowded New York square. I thought that she must be brave enough to perform in front of so
many people.
She noticed me. I walked over and told her how good her music sounded. “Thank you.” she said. “I have been going through a hard time recently, but you’ve made me hopeful again.” I said to her. “I’m glad that I could help,” she replied, “Why are you so sad ”
“Well, my mom has lost her job, and I’m not sure what to do …”
“Did you notice the way you were walking Your head was down.” she said. “Don’t be upset, because opportunity (机遇) comes in different ways and if your head is down, you might not see it. You should smile more… lift your head up.”
I looked at her, surprised at how she was encouraging (鼓励) me. “Why are you playing the piano here ” I asked her with a smile.
She explained that she saw a lot of unhappy people in the world and she tried to cheer them up by playing music. I smiled a little wilder, realizing that no difficulties could stop me from going on.
