Mr. Tan: Good morning, class. Today I’m going to talk about the Internet. I’m sure all of you use the Internet, but what do you know about it Now let me tell you about its history and development.
The first general-purpose computers came onto the market in the early 1950s, but it was only in 1969 that scientists invented a way for computers to communicate with each other. This meant that computers allowed people to pass messages along a network and talk to each other.
general-purpose[只用于名词前] 多用途的;多功能的
To start with, only four computers were connected and the network was for military use. Public commercial use of the Internet began in mid-1989.
One of the main applications of the Internet is the World Wide Web.
military [ m l tri]军事的;军队的;武装的
Pages on the World Wide Web are called websites and can be accessed through the Internet. They were originally used as a space for scientists around the world to share information. The world’s first website was built in 1990 by Tim Berners-Lee, a British scientist. He then taught others how to build their own websites, allowing the Internet to grow.
Within 24 years, there were more than 1 billion websites online. Two years later, in 2016, 3.6 billion people were using the Internet—about 48 per cent of the world’s population at the time. And increasingly, people are using their phones to access the Internet. The future is definitely online and it’s definitely mobile.

Increasingly, training is taking place in the office rather than outside it.
在职培训日益增加,而不是脱产进行。

Possible answer:
Report on Internet use
When the Internet was invented in 1969, no one could have known just how much it would change the world. The world’s first website
was not built until 21 years later. Now there are more than 1 billion websites online.
There have been great changes in the way people use the Internet. The Internet has become more and more important and is now used for a greater variety of activities. It seems
more people trust Internet security, as they are more likely to shop online or make online payments now than in the past. Both these activities saw big increases, from 38% to 63% and 32% to 65% respectively. The biggest change in the past five years is the increase in people making travel bookings online.
This increased from less than 10% to more than 40%. Also, the popularity of mobile Internet use has grown dramatically in the past five years. Moreover, it seems that people of all ages have taken to the Internet.
Around 21% of users are now aged 40 or over, compared to 17% five years ago. The number of users under 20 has also gone up.
As far as I am concerned, people will probably spend even more time online in the future.
It seems likely that people will continue to do more of their shopping and payments online. The trend of going mobile also looks likely to carry on.
