A Kenyan teacher who gave away most of his monthly salary(工资) to poor people has won a $I million Global Teacher Prize.
In 2016, Peter Tabichi came ta Keriko Mixed Day Secondary School, a public school, in a faraway Kenya's Rift Valley. The school had just one computer and had problems connecting to the Internet. It had no library or laboratory, as well. To make matters worse, the students came from poor families where necessities like food and clothing were hard to come by. While these difficulties would have caused most people to leave quickly, Tabichi stayed.
Realizing that hungry kids tend to become poor students, the teacher began using as much as 80 percent of his monthly salary to buy food and learning objects for them. He set up a science club to get kids interested in the topic."Our laboratory does not have everything, but I encourage them to think wider and use what we can get locally."
Tabichi and other four teachers visit low-achieving students at their homes to provide one-on-one help and to understand the difficulties these children face daily. Tabichi also encourages parents to allow girls to continue their high-school education.
Tabichi's hard work has made a difference. School registration (注册) has more than doubled to almost 400 now since he came. In 2017, 16 of the 59 graduating students went to college, while in 2018, the number rose to 26.In 2017, five students qualified (有资格) for the Intel ISEF (International Science and Engineering Fair). This year, two other students will compete in the 2019 Intel ISEF to be held in Phoenix, Arizona.
The teacher, however, says that his success is due to his students. He said,"I am only here because of what my students have achieved. This prizo gives them a chance. It tells the world that they can do anything." As would be expected, Tabichi plans to spend the prize money on his school and to feed the poor.

EDMONTON, CANADA—The Btzlo ls one of the oldest buildings in one of the city's oldest neighbourhoods ( 社 区 ) ,but it's set to be knocked down. Edmontonians are hoping more can be done to preserve (保留) more of the city's history.
"The reason why the area is popular in the first place is that it's a historic neighbourhood. And I think it's important that we preserve that history." said Mark Wilson, owner of Vivid Print, a shop on Whyte Avenue at 103 Street.
Wilson's business is located in a building two doors down from the Etzio, a building that is more than a century old. But after 117 years on Whyte Avenue, the building is coming down to make way for a new three-floor development.
"It has become acceptable to simply pull down old buildings and put up new buildings," said Wilson."The words on the sidewalks (人行道) here say historic area. Well, it's not historic if all the buildings are 10 years old."
It's a move that disappoints Wllson and others on the street who believe more should be done to keep the feature of Edmonton.
"I think in this area it's important because it keeps the flavor (风味) of Edmonton, and Edmonton is known for Whyte Ave." said a woman on Saturday afternoon.
"Some of the old culture should still be there, I think," added a man who was walking along the street."It makes Edmonton what it is. Without it, it just becomes another mall or it could be any other city in the world."
Wilson, looking at the old building, believes a little piece of history is lost with every building that's torn down
After the Etzio building is tom down, the Old Strathcona Hotel and the Ross Building will be the only two buildings left from the 1800s.
