Giving gifts is a common thing for human beings. But the world is so big that the customs of gift giving are different in every country. Let's take a look at the unique tradition around the world.
In the US, a set of kitchen knives seems like a perfect gift for a wedding or a holiday. However, in some European countries like Germany, superstition(迷信)says that a knife presented as a gift will cut off your friendship. There's a well-known Italian wedding tradition that the groom's(新郎的) tie is cut into a number of little pieces. Wedding guests can then "buy" these tie pieces in cash. It's a fun way to give money to the bride (新娘)and groom that leaves guests with a wedding souvenir.
Vodka(伏特加)might seem the most suitable gift for a Russian, but a lot of them would see it as an unimaginative gift. Many even think the idea is silly. In Germany, flowers are good gifts to take to your dinner hostess. But don't take her red roses, because it means you are in love with her. Don't take thirteen of anything, either.

An idiom is a phrase that we can't understand from the meaning of each word. For example, if an American boy asks his mum what's for dinner, she may say, "I'll play it by ear." That means she doesn't have plans for dinner and she will decide later.
"Play it by ear" used to mean playing music without using the sheet music(活页乐谱), but now it's different. There are many idioms in English. If you learn to use them, your English will be much more colorful.
Have you ever heard the idiom "He bought the farm" It means "He died".Do you know how it became popular It was first used in World WarⅠ.When a soldier died, the government gave his family enough money to buy a farm.
In the early 1930s, people in the US often did not know when or where their next meal was. So as soon as they got something in their hands that could be eaten, it would go into their mouths. That was how people began to use the idiom "live hand to mouth".
And don't be angry if your English friend says this to you, "Break a leg in your game!" He is wishing you good luck! Hundreds of years ago, people believed in sprites(小精灵).Sprites enjoyed causing trouble. If sprites heard you ask for something, they would make the opposite happen. Tell someone to "break a leg" and sprites would make something good happen.
( )24."I'll play it by ear" can be used to answer the question

Do you sometimes feel different, alone or left out Recently scientists have done a survey about "being alone" among people aged from 3 to 60. It shows that teenagers have great needs to feel like they belong to a group. But being a loner doesn't always mean being strange or disliked. Actually, it has become a lifestyle in many countries among young people who consider being alone to be an everyday part of life.
In South Korea, there are a growing number of people who describe themselves as "honjok". The word comes from "hon"(alone) and "jok" (tribe). These people eat alone, travel alone, and enjoy being by themselves.
In Japan, people have developed a strong loner culture over the years. There are solo karaoke bars and solo cafes. Ramen restaurants for solo diners are especially popular. Clapboards(隔板)separate each seat. Diners can't see the faces of other customers or waiters. But knowing that there are other solo diners may make you feel better. More importantly, you can try to find strength in your aloneness.
Aloneness gives you time to look inside yourself or think about something without distraction(使人分心的事). Therefore, when you are alone next time, instead of finding someone to talk to or hang out with, you may try to learn a new skill or develop a hobby. You can start by walking in a park or visiting a museum alone. It may seem strange and boring at first. But be patient. Give it time. You may finally find the beauty in being alone.

新风向 弘扬中国文化Chinese fancy knots(中国结), also called Chinese knots, are very important in Chinese culture. They began as a form of traditional art in the Tang and Song Dynasties in China, and became popular in the Ming Dynasty. Long ago, they found their way to Japan and some Southeast Asian countries, and were well received there. Now they are regarded as one of the symbols of Chinese culture.
As for the name itself, it is surely meaningful. The Chinese character for "knot", jie, means "connection". And the pronunciation of jie is very close to that of ji, which means "good luck". As a result, Chinese knots are used as a way to express people's strong wishes for marvellous things like happiness, love and good luck.
The knots are used widely in everyday life. They come in different sizes. Small ones are connected to jewellery(首饰), clothes and gifts in order to draw people's attention while large ones are used to make a living room or study more beautiful. Whether large or small, they are named after their shapes and uses. For example, Double Coin Knots are called shuangqianjie because they are in the shape of two ancient Chinese coins, meaning "good things come in pairs". Besides, Chinese knots are famous for their bright colors. Different colors have different traditional cultural meanings. Red means good luck and happiness; green means health; yellow means wealth.

People all over the world are now taking action to fight against COVID-19. But how they respond (应对) may depend on their own cultures and traditions. Let's take a look.
Daily habits can make a big difference to your health. According to the World Health Organization, 60% of people's health problems are related to everyday hygiene(卫生) habits. As COVID-19 spreads across the world, governments and organizations in many countries have suggested that people should pay more attention to their daily hygiene habits.
In China, for example, people usually share dishes together at the dining table. But this habit has a high risk of spreading illnesses through saliva (唾液). To fight against COVID-19, many cities in China, including Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, have called on people to order separate meals or use serving chopsticks to take their food. Many people also suggest that Chinese people should continue these habits.
In the US, people are asked to develop healthy hygiene habits. For example, people should cover their mouth and nose with a tissue (纸巾) or use the inside of their elbow(肘) instead of their hands when they cough or sneeze.
