Don't Judge a Book by Its Cover
Ever since I was a little girl, I've loved reading crime and detective (侦探) novels, so I guess it was pretty normal that I started writing them when I was older. However, my family is very big on having a traditional career (职业) and so when I said that I wanted to go to college and study writing, my parents told me that I couldn't. They told me that I had to study for a degree so that I would achieve a career, and not something as risky as writing. I suppose I could have studied journalism (新闻专业), but I didn't want to lose interest in writing because it would be something I would do every day for work, not for pleasure. I thought that teaching looked like a pretty good compromise (妥协), especially because of the long holidays. It was a good choice: by the time I was twenty-five, I'd already finished two novels and had an agent.
To be honest, I never meant to keep my being a crime writer a secret or anything, and my friends have always known. One of the reasons most people don't know is that my agent told me that my name Hazel sounded too much like a romance(爱情故事) novelist for older women. She suggested Brooke Lane and I thought, "Well, if you think it'll make me successful, okay." I'd totally forgotten about it until I walked into school one day and saw one of my workmates reading my novel. I asked her some questions about it, and it was so clear that she had no idea that I'd written it — she even offered to lend it to me after she'd finished! Of course, sometimes I wonder what my students would think if they knew that their teacher was going home on the weekend to write about murders and dead bodies, but I think my parents probably did me a favor: my teaching job keeps me in touch with the real world.
( )29.Hazel is probably .
A. an agent B. a journalist
C. a teacher and artist D. a teacher and writer
( )30.The underlined words "is very big on " in the passage most probably mean .

B. to like something very much
C. to have more experiences
D. to misunderstand something
( )31.It's clear that Hazel .
A. agreed to study journalism for a degree
B. accepted Brooke Lane as her pen name
C. would like to write something for teaching
D. told her workmates about her writing novels
( )32.We can infer from the passage that .
A. Hazel likes showing off in public
B. Hazel's students all want to write novels
C. Hazel's agent has played a role in her success
D. older women prefer the name Brooke Lane to Hazel

In Paris, one freezing winter evening, I was having dinner with my friend,Mr Dupin, a famous detective. We had just finished our meal when there was a loud knock at the door.Dupin opened it.There stood Mr Germain, Chief(首领) of the Paris Police.
We welcomed him warmly, for he was an old acquaintance(熟人) whom we hadn't seen for a long time.

"Then I visited him with my dark glasses on to help me observe(观察)better. While we were chatting, a dirty, torn letter in the letter holder suddenly caught my eye — unusual for the Minister, who is careful and neat."
"I was sure it was the letter."
"Then I purposely left my gloves behind so I could come back again."
"The next morning, I hired a man to fire a gun on the street. While the Minister went to see what happened, I stole the letter by replacing it with a similar one."On it Dupin wrote these words:

How to be a good detective
Have you seen the Hollywood movie Sherlock Holmes Holmes is a character created by the British writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. His books were so popular that Holmes soon became "the most famous detective in the world". What do you need to be a good detective The movie Sherlock Holmes will show you.
In the movie, the great detective faces a dangerous man, Lord Blackwood. Together with his best friend Dr Watson, Holmes stops Blackwood's plan to control the world with "black magic".
Most of us are not as intelligent as Holmes. But we can also work out mysteries on our own. All we have to do is to follow some simple rules.
Rule No. 1: Justice (正义) is the most important. No matter how smart he or she is, the most important quality for a detective is being good. In the movie, Lord Blackwood and Sherlock Holmes are both very intelligent. The difference is that Lord Blackwood is a bad man and he does bad things. Holmes can beat him on the side of justice.
Rule No. 2: Have sharp eyes. Every bad man tries to cover up what he has done. But not all things can be covered up easily. A good detective can discover the clues hidden on the scene of the crime with sharp eyes. For example, Holmes can simply look at a man's footprints and quickly find out his personal information like age and habits.
Rule No. 3: A good assistant is a great help. Even though Holmes has knowledge about many subjects, such as chemistry, botany(植物学) and anatomy(解剖学), he still needs Dr Watson's help. You should also have someone help you, especially if you don't know as much as Holmes.
Rule No. 4: Logic (逻辑) is the key. A good detective never jumps to conclusions. When all the necessary clues are put together, you'd better think carefully. If you can't work it out, don't be afraid. Just take a deep breath and concentrate on thinking. Logic can help you discover missing clues.

One possible version:
My favourite book
Good books are valuable treasures. Among all the books I've read, the novel called The Old Man and the Sea is my favourite. It was written by an American writer. It tells about a fisherman who is lucky enough to catch a huge fish, but he finds it hard to take it home. On his way home, he has to fight against the fish and the sea.
I like the book best because it tells such a meaningful story that I can learn a lot from it. The fisherman is brave and he never gives up when he is in trouble. I also learn that nothing seems terrible as long as we have a strong will and a brave heart.
