Embrace Sports, Enjoy Life
With the 19th Asian Games held in Hangzhou, it's an ideal moment to emphasize the advantages of sports, particularly the benefits they bring to students.
Firstly, regular physical activity is essential for maintaining good physical health. It enhances our fitness and strength. Additionally, sports play a vital role in reducing stress and improving mental health. Furthermore, sports promote crucial life skills such as teamwork, discipline, and time management.
I urge my fellow students to make sports a routine part of our lives, which can lead to a more balanced and fulfilling life. Let's draw inspiration from the 19th Asian Games and strive to "Embrace Sports, Enjoy Life."
读后续写
The young man drove me to a huge building and led me into a big classroom, which was crowded with elderly people like me. Through chatting, I learned that they had all been longing to read and write but never had the chance to go to school. As the bell rang, in came the teacher, a woman well past forty. After a warm and brief greeting, we started our lesson. First we learned to read the alphabet and thought I made mistakes at times, no one laughed at me. Everyone helped each other with open-hearted enjoyment.
I’m still going to school. Though faced with the most challenging event of my life, I’m full of courage and confidence. With the generous help of my teacher, friends and my children, I have made great progress in study. Now I’m never shy about admitting the truth that once I was not able to read and write at all. Besides, I’m eager to encourage more elderly people to attend the adult education classes, because it’s never too late to learn.2024 届高三年级第二次调研测试英语科试卷

Four Hotels That Will Make Your Life Easier
Marriott Detroit Airport
It’s such an ideal option for business travelers in a hurry. Here is the basic idea: You download the
iPhone or Android app. The night before, you can “check-in” virtually. When you arrive, you get a message
that the room is ready and your key, which is already tied to your reservation, is waiting for you at the desk.
Yotel New York
The self-service kiosks (一体机) at this high-tech New York hotel are open 24x7 and work just like the
ones you’d see at an airport. There are just five-steps to register and obtain your room card. There’s even a
luggage robot. You tap in the number of bags you’re carrying, then wait for a robot arm to swing down and
store your luggage in a locker.
Hyatt Regency Minneapolis
Business travelers like the fast kiosk check-in works. Like the Yotel, the kiosk asks you to put in your
credit card. The whole process takes about three minutes. When travelers leave, they can be equally
impressed with the fast check-out. You never have to wait in line.
Radisson LaCrosse
The Radisson is trying to make the kiosk process even faster, you use a mobile app to register and then
receive a password by email or text. When you get to the kiosk, you can scan the password to get your key
without any other steps required. It’s incredibly fast.
21. Which hotel has the self-service luggage locker
A. Marriott Detroit Airport. B. Hyatt Regency Minneapolis.
C. Yotel New York. D. Radisson LaCrosse.
22. What do Marriott Detroit Airport and Radisson LaCrosse have in common
A. They provide key-free service.
B. Travelers can check in with their mobile phones.
C. Travelers need to check in with a credit card.
D. They both have the fastest check-in process.
23. What’s the main purpose of the text
A. To recommend hotels with fast service. B. To criticize the service of the hotels.
C. To assess the service of the hotels. D. To help customers check in and check out.

What’s the first thing that pops into your mind when you think of wheat straw Most people would
probably just see it as a pile of waste in a farmer’s field. However, Wu Cui, an intangible cultural inheritor,
can turn the straw left over from harvested wheal into beautiful and eye-catching functional artworks.
The earliest straw-weaving (草编的) products were discovered at Hemudu Cultural Ruins, a Neolithic
3
{#{QQABBQ4EggiAAAAAAAhCQwUgCkEQkACCCAoGxBAEMAAAQQFABAA=}#}
cultural site located in eastern China’s Zhejiang province. The Book of Rites, one of the classical works of
Confucianism, also records that there were already mats made of cattail grass and professional
straw-weaving craftsmen during the Zhou Dynasty.
Straw weaving is a method of manufacturing daily items or artworks. It was listed as a national
intangible cultural heritage in 2008.
Wu explains the process of straw weaving: selection of materials is the first step of a complicated, time-
consuming and labor intensive process that can take weeks, or even months, to complete. You need to sketch
the piece on paper, which requires drawing skills. Next comes weaving, shaping and preserving of the work.
Even by finishing that process, it does not mean that you will always create a good piece of work, and the
hardest part is to make it lifelike.
In the past, woven straw items could be found almost in every household in the countryside, such as
straw hats and straw shoes, because they were practical in everyday life. But due to the impact of
industrialization, manufactured goods have replaced such products, which yield low profits, and there are
only about 100 individuals engaging in the work across the country. “The world has changed, and craftsmen
need to transcend practicality and pursue the beauty and artistry of straw culture to help the craft survive and
thrive,” Wu says.
From her perspective, straw weaving should respond to people’s needs and preferences, while still
drawing inspiration from traditional culture. “Craftspeople should make a great effort to grasp the trends and
opportunities of the times to create new and relevant products,” she says. When asked about her plans, Wu
says she wants to dig deeper into local traditional culture and create cultural creative products by developing
the straw-weaving technique.
24. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about straw-weaving products
A. Their major uses. B. Their historic origins.
C. Their cultural value. D. Their manufacturing process.
25. Which is the toughest part for straw-weaving craftsmen according to Wu Cui
A. Making the artworks vivid. B. Drawing sketches on paper.
C. Selecting suitable materials. D. Preserving finished products.
26. What does the underlined word “transcend” in paragraph 5 probably mean
A. Rely on. B. Cast away. C. Turn to. D. Go beyond.
27. What can we learn from Wu Cui’s opinion according to the last paragraph
A. Straw-weaving products are out of favor with customers.
B. Craftsmen should innovate the craft based on traditional culture.
C. Local people benefit a lot from the straw-weaving techniques.
D. Pursuing fashion should be the first priority for craftspeople.

Two-thirds of the world population lives under conditions where the freshwater demand is more than
twice the natural water availability for at least one month per year. According to official statistics, one billion
of those live in India and 0.9 billion live in China. Other areas facing this problem for longer periods include
Bangladesh (130 million people), the western and southern states of the USA (130 million), Pakistan (120
million), Nigeria (110 million), and Mexico (90 million).
Communities use a range of techniques to overcome this issue. In dry summers, those near the coast
can desalinate (淡化) seawater, although the process requires a large amount of energy and expenditure.
Some remote inland communities have alternative methods that suit their particular conditions. For example,
many high-altitude Chilean communities in the Andes use fog collectors, specialized nets that can gather just
a few liters a day.
Elsewhere, there’s another option available. Researchers at ETH Zurich have developed a new device
that passively harvests water from the air around the clock. The device is made up of a specially coated glass
pane (玻璃板) that reflects solar radiation and also radiates away its own heat. In doing so, it cools down by
as much as 15 degrees Celsius below the surrounding temperatures. This difference in temperature between
the air and the pane causes water vapor to condense (凝结) on its underside, which can then be easily
collected.
Tests so far have been conducted on a university building in Zurich and suggest that the device can
produce twice as much water per day as other passive water-collection technologies. Under ideal conditions,
researchers harvested 0.53 decilitres of water per square metre of the surface per hour. “That’s close to the
theoretical maximum value of 0.6 decilitres per hour, which is impossible to exceed,” says Iwan Hachler, a
doctoral student who is working on the technology.
The zero-energy input of the set-up could make it suitable for use in developing countries, particularly
in remote communities where water shortage is often combined with power shortages. The scientists are
hopeful that the device could be used with other water-collection methods, such as desalination, to increase
productivity.
28. What does the author want to tell us by mentioning official statistics in Paragraph 1
A. Lack of water seriously restricts many countries’ growth.
B. Water resources are unevenly distributed globally.
C. Fresh water insecurity is a global crisis.
D. Developed countries are better at handling water shortages.
29. How do many Chileans living in the Andes deal with the inadequate water supply
A. By moving to water-rich areas in summer.
B. By bringing in seawater and purifying it.
C. By harvesting water from fog.
D. By cutting down on their water consumption.
5
{#{QQABBQ4EggiAAAAAAAhCQwUgCkEQkACCCAoGxBAEMAAAQQFABAA=}#}
30. Why is a coated glass pane used in the new device
A. To work as a cooling surface. B. To hold the condensed water.
C. To get rid of harmful solar radiation. D. To record the changes in temperature.
31. What can be inferred about the new device
A. It needs further confirmation from experts. B. It is limited to laboratory environments.
C. It has met with theoretical bottlenecks. D. It produces satisfying outcomes.
D
The sales pitches tempt: Blue-light-blocking glasses are supposed to protect eyes from the effects of
short-wavelength light emitting from our smartphones, computer screens and LED lights. Given how much
time we spend on our devices, this sounds like a smart investment, right After all, eye strain is a real issue
and can lead to poor sleep and even eye diseases. The glasses can cost $15 all the way up to several hundred
dollars. But do they work
Elizabeth Esparaz, an ophthalmologist(眼科专家)based in Cleveland, Ohio, says the science that
manufacturers share as they promote these glasses can be confusing. For starters, blue light is not just about
tech devices, and it’s not always bad. “The sun emits a much higher intensity of blue light than human-made
devices, of course, and it’s actually beneficial,”says Dr. Esparaz. It helps our mood, alertness and sleep-
wake cycle.
The problem is blue light at night: It contains the release of melatonin. “Melatonin helps regulate our
circadian rhythms (生理节奏) and makes us sleepy, ” says Dr. Esparaz.
So, in theory, wearing blue-light-blocking glasses should help people who watch movies in bed or read
from a tablet at night avoid sleeplessness. A 2021 review study from the University of Oklahoma that looked
at 24 previous studies found that people affected by sleep disorders, jet lag and shift work fell asleep faster
after using these glasses.
As for eye strain, a 2021 Australian study showed that those wearing the glasses did not experience less
eye strain than those using clear glasses. And a 2018 review study, also by Australian researchers, found
insufficient evidence that they prevent certain eye diseases.
“These glasses aren’t going to be harmful,” says Dr. Esparaz. But, she adds, a lack of standardization in
the industry means there’s no way to know if one pair is better than another. A more reliable solution: Turn
on the blue-light-filtering function on your devices and limit screen time before bed. To help with eye strain,
Dr. Esparaz suggests taking breaks and using lubricating eye drops.
32.What is Dr. Esparaz’s attitude toward business publicity
A. Unclear. B. Dismissive. C. Doubtful. D. Approving.
33. What can we learn about blue light from the first two paragraphs
A. It may facilitate sleep. B. It can be beneficial.
C. It actually causes health issues. D. It merely comes from digital devices.

I love learning foreign languages so much that I learn a new language every two years. When people
find I’m a polyglot(通晓多种语言的人),they always ask me, “How do you do that ” Honestly, my answer
will be, “I don’t know. I simply love learning languages.” 36 They want to know why they spend
years learning even one language, never achieving fluency, and what’s the secret of being polyglots.
37 And what do we have in common I decided to find that out. I went to several events where
language lovers gather to practice their languages, asked dozens of polyglots about methods they use, and
heard dozens of approaches. Everybody seems to have a unique way to speak several languages fluently.
38 All these polyglots talked about language learning as if it was great fun. They found ways lo turn
language learning from a boring subject into a pleasant daily activity. You should have seen their faces when
they were showing me their colorful grammar charts and handmade flash cards. 39 The methods are
various, but they make sure it’s something enjoyable.
I realized it’s actually how I learn. 40 Then interesting programs became my choice. So all is
clear. If you don’t like writing words down on paper, type them in an app. If you’re a shy person, apply
self-talk at home. This is how polyglots learn languages, and the best news is that it’s available to anyone
willing to take the learning into their own hands.
A. How can those with little talent be fluent
B. But people are never happy with the reply.
C. There’s no shortcut to learning languages for anyone.
D. One of them even made recipes in a foreign language
E. That made me wonder, too, how other polyglots actually do it.
F. When learning Spanish last year, I was bored with textbooks.
G. Polyglots simply found ways to enjoy the language-leaning process.

Never Too Late to learn
I worked from the time when I was four and raised seven children, all of them college graduates. It
seemed I’d done everything I’d ever wanted to do in my life, but I had one regret. I was born in 1898, the
oldest of five kids. Papa couldn’t spare me to go to school, so I worked in the fields with him till I was 21
years old.
Everywhere I went, I learned some hard lessons about what happens to a man who even can’t read the
alphabet. People trick you out of wages. They sell you a ticket to one city, take your money and hand you a
ticket to somewhere else.
By 1928, I’d been wandering for nine years. I met a woman named Elzenia. We fell in love, married and
moved to Dallas, where I got work fixing roads for the city. When Amelia, the oldest of our seven children,
first went to school, I took my wife aside. “Elzenia,” I said. “I don’t want the kids to know I can’t read or
write.”
In 1938, one day my boss called me in. “George,” he said, “No one knows those machines like you do.
I’d like to give you a better job.” But my thrill and surprise were cut short when he said, “Fill out this form
and we will get you a pay increase.” I couldn’t admit the truth. I thanked him and walked out of his office. I
did stay right where I was, until I turned 65 and my boss made me retire. But I didn’t stop working. For the
next 25 years, I lived a happy life, but it still seemed to me like something was missing.
A young fellow handed me a piece of paper. It was information about adult education classes. People can
learn to read and write. Now I’m 98. I thought of my friends and neighbours and what they might think if
they found out I couldn’t read. After all these years, my secret would be out. But all my life I’ve wanted to
read. It was high time for action.
续写要求:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右。
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

The young man drove me to a huge building and led me into a big classroom, which was crowded with
