The Levine study found that non-obese individuals move around two hours more each day than their obese counterparts, burning an additional 300-350 calories. This means that even small activities like walking across the room to change channels can contribute to your overall health and fitness. It's time to embrace your inner domestic athlete.
Here are some tips to maximize your non-exercise fitness routine:
Alphabetize your bookshelves: Rearranging your bookshelves can be a weight-training session in disguise. Hardcover books can weigh over a kilogram, so think of them as your big lifts, and the lighter paperbacks as your warm-up. Start with the lighter weights and gradually work your way up.
Vacuum (真空吸尘) neglected areas: Vacuuming involves continuous movement around your home, lifting and moving objects to get rid of dust. Set a timer on your phone and use the AMRAP protocol (As Many Reps As Possible). Lift as many rugs and shift as many chairs and
tables as you can within a two-minute period, followed by a 30-second rest. This should get your heart rate up.
Dismiss the wearables from your wardrobe: Clear out your wardrobe of items that you no longer wear. Bag them up and take them to a charity shop. Each bag you carry represents five lifts and folds. Carrying the bag downstairs and to the shop engages your stabilizing muscles.
Pick wild fruit: Take a brisk walk to a location with wild fruit, and bring a companion. Set an 11-minute timer and make it a competition to increase the intensity. This calorie-burning workout is perfect for fruit that's either high or low on branches.
According to the Levine study, what was the key difference between the non-obese group and their obese counterparts
Non-obese individuals burned fewer calories.
Non-obese individuals moved around more and burned more calories.
Non-obese individuals spent more time watching TV.
Non-obese individuals had a slower heart rate.
In which activity is the AMRAP protocol mentioned in the passage used
A. Alphabetizing bookshelves B. Vacuuming neglected areas
C. Picking wild fruit D. Carrying bags to charity shops 23.How does picking wild fruit contribute to a calorie-burning workout
It involves walking slowly to the fruit location.
It requires constant small rests.
It’s perfect for fruit that's neither high nor low on branches.
It encourages an intense picking competition to increase activity.

Anicka Quin's insightful article, “When Music Is Medicine” in the June issue truly resonated with me. I've undergone three years of CT and MRI scans, and thankfully, they’ve all been successful experiences. During one of my MRI sessions, it was suggested that I bring a CD to play while inside the scanner. I chose my favorite soothing music, and it made the entire process remarkably more calming and bearable.
My most profound encounter with the healing power of music, however, was witnessing its impact on my late mother-in-law, who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease. At a care home in her nineties, she seemed lost and confused during Christmas festivities, unable to grasp the carol sheet in her hands. Yet, as soon as the music began to play, a remarkable transformation occurred. She sang every word to every verse with a smile on her face, as if transported to a different time when the memories were still fresh.
It is well-established that music possesses therapeutic qualities that extend far beyond medical procedures. Even in good health, the benefits of music are abundant. Playing and listening to music can enhance our overall well-being in various ways. For instance, it promotes regular breathing, as we take longer breaths to sustain extended notes and phrases. It also encourages good posture, particularly when we stand in concert mode, which can improve our physical health.
I'm a proud member of the Mendip Male Voice Choir, where we gather once a week to raise our voices in harmony. Beyond our weekly meetings, we also practice diligently at home, striving to achieve the perfect blend of voices.
In addition to the joy of making music together, the friendship and fun shared among choir members are invaluable. Our gatherings extend beyond the rehearsal room, often involving enjoyable social activities that strengthen our bonds and contribute to our general health and well-being.
So, if you're looking for a meaningful way to enhance your life and make a positive impact on the lives of others, consider joining a choir. Whether you're passionate about music or simply seeking a supportive and joyful community, there is sure to be a choir near you ready to welcome you with open arms.
What can we infer from paragragh 1
The author doesn’t like the article.
The author isn’t in a good health condition.
Medical examinations are not smooth to the author.

To make a comparison with the author.
To emphasize her fading memory in her nineties.
To prove the healing power of music.
To describe the worse situation in the care house.
According to the article, how can music benefit our physical health
By promoting regular breathing and good posture.
By speeding up heart rate and metabolism.
By increasing stress and anxiety levels.
By causing muscle tension and discomfort.
What is the best title for the passage
A. Music brings friendship B. Social activities are enjoyable
C. Music is healing D. Community is supportive C
With an oversized body, the humpback whale( 座头鲸) is not designed for speed. Yet the
marine mammal, which can reach lengths of 50 feet, is known for its impressively long travels between warm-water breeding grounds in the winter and cold-water feeding grounds during the summer.
“Humpbacks have proved to make the longest documented migration of any mammal,” says marine mammal research biologist John Calambokidis, who has studied the whales since 1986.
Although humpbacks were once hunted to near extinction, their population has increased since achieving federal endangered species status. They are found in oceans all over the world. The Northern Hemisphere populations reside in the North Atlantic Ocean and the North Pacific Ocean. The southern group spends its time feeding off the coast of Antarctica. During the
winter, both groups head to warmer waters for breeding and raising their young.
According to Calambokidis, there is some scientific debate about why humpback whales migrate so far. It might be because the giant creatures, and their vulnerable newborn babies, need warmer waters to reduce energy loss during the winter.
There’s also the possibility that humpback whales migrate as a strategy to escape predation by killer whales. Calambokidis says that humpback whales are able to defend themselves against killer whale attacks easier if they are in shallow, warm waters rather than deeper cold-water ocean regions.
During their migrations, humpback whales seldom eat. They live off body fat accumulated before embarking on their journey. Calambokidis says that it’s hard to tell if humpbacks fatten up as a way of preparing for their travels or because they somehow know that prey will be less abundant in the near future.
How the humpback whales know where to travel during their migrations still has scientists stumped. “I am not sure anyone has a clear answer to this other than assumption,” Calambokidis says.
In what way are the humpback whales special
They have proved to make the farthest recorded migration of any mammal.
They are meant to have the most powerful ability to swim fast.
They are able to defend themselves easier in deeper cold-water ocean regions.
They feed on killer whales on their entire journey of migration.
Why has the population of the humpback whales improved
Because they have migrated to warmer waters.
Because they have fatten up along the migration journey.
Because they have been protected by the government.
Because they can travel 24 hours a day without resting.
What does the underlined word “vulnerable” in paragraph 4 mean
A. incredible B. available C. weak D. ideal
According to the last paragraph, scientists’ answer to the direction of the humpback whales’ migration is .
definite B. doubtful C. ashamed D. unclear
D
Puppies are often trained with treats-but maybe they don’t have to be. Pups may be able to learn by mimicking(模仿) people’s actions.
Some past studies have hinted at dogs’ ability to learn by observing humans, says Claudia Fugazza. She studies animal behavior at E tv s Lorand University in Budapest, Hungary. But past experiments used food to reward dogs when they mimicked people. So, they didn’t reveal whether dogs were natural copycats. And there’s even less known about puppies.
Fugazza and her team tested whether puppies and other young animals might imitate people. They rounded up 42 puppies, 39 kittens and 8 young wolves. All of these animals lived with human families. In each test, the researchers showed an animal an object. Once they got the animal's attention, a researcher modeled an action-touching an object with either their nose
or hand. Then, the scientists watched whether the animal copied the human.
“It often took a while to get the attention of kittens and young wolves”, Fugazza says, but the dog puppies were basically immediately looking at the human even before we started to call their attention.” After showing the actions, cats rarely replicated what humans did. Wolves sometimes copied, but the dogs were much more reliable. The team shared its findings in Scientific Reports.
Dogs and cats have both been bred to live with humans — a process known as
domestication, “they should have the same tendency to match human actions,” Fugazza says. But cats don’t. That suggests the importance of another aspect of the animals’ history: how they behave in groups.
Cats evolved from solitary hunters. Once they cozied up to humans, cats helped people get rid of mice, but they didn’t work with humans. Dogs evolved from wolves. Wolves work together, hunting in packs. And once dogs started hanging around humans, they worked with people. Those relationships might have provided the motivation for dogs to imitate humans.
What was the main focus of Claudia Fugazza's research mentioned in the article A.Testing if cats and dogs can mimic human actions
Investigating the domestication process of cats and dogs
Studying the hunting behaviors of wolves
Analyzing the intelligence of puppies and kittens
Which animal in the study showed the highest tendency to copy human actions
A. Cats B. Wolves C. Puppies D. Kittens
What process may explain their tendency to mimic human actions
A. The process of domestication B. The process of natural selection
C. The process of genetic mutation D. The process of habitat adaptation
According to the article, why do dogs have a greater tendency to imitate humans compared to cats
Dogs are inherently smarter than cats.
Dogs evolved from wolves and worked with people.
Cats are more independent and less interested in humans.
Dogs and cats have the same tendency to imitate humans.

Jimmy lived in a city with his family, but he loved nature so much. For his son’s birthday, he decided to go to the forest for celebration with family and friends and enjoy some time with Mother Nature. He booked a cottage ( 别 墅 ) which was near the forest. There were arrangements for guests to enjoy nature and view wild animals roaming ( 游 荡 ) in nearby places.
On the first day of their trip, they saw a small dog while entering the cottage. When Jimmy’s two year-old son noticed that dog, he offered it a biscuit with his small hands. The dog was happy to get a treat from the kid and stay with him. Soon the kid and the dog became friends. From that moment, the dog wouldn’t leave the kid’s side even for a minute.
On the third day of the trip, Jimmy’s family and their friends celebrated the kid’s birthday and everyone enjoyed it. The next day they wanted to spend more time in the forest. So all the adults decided to go for hunting and the kid was left in the care of his baby-sitter in the cottage. Few hours later, Jimmy and his wife were the first to get back. When they walked up to the cottage, they saw that main gate was open and in the hall no one was there. So they called their kid and the baby-sitter, but they got no reply.
They became worried and started to search for them in the cottage. At that moment, Jimmy’s eyes lit upon that dog with blood stains (血迹) on its mouth.

读后续写
Dear Mark,
I’m writing to tell you something about the sports meeting we held on the school playground last Thursday.
We had all kinds of traditional events this time, during which three boys from my class and I took part in the
4×100-metre relay race. At first, we were in the front. Unfortunately, I fell down when I took the stick from another boy.
Although I stood up and kept on running, we were the last to reach the finishing line. All the audience still cheered loudly
for me because I didn’t give up.
Do you often take part in the sports meeting at your school Please write and share with me.
Yours,
Li Hua

(Text 1)
M: May I visit Mrs. Brown tomorrow
W: Let me see. It’s Tuesday today. Sorry, you can’t. How about the day after tomorrow
M: That’s OK.
(Text 2)
W: What do you do after class
M: Well, I have classes until 11:30. After that, I usually go to the sports center and workout for at least an hour.
W: Really What kind of exercise do you do
M: Well, three days a week I swim. The other days I lift weights.
(Text 3)
M: So how do you like my new song
W: Well, it sounds all right.
M: Do you think I should play it at the club
W: I don’t know. It seems a bit modern for that crowd. I think they’ll be expecting something more traditional and quiet.
(Text 4)
M: Shall I go out to play football, Mum
W: Don’t forget you haven’t finished your homework yet.
(Text 5)
W: Could you drive me to the station quickly I’m going to meet a friend at 10 o’clock. But it’s 9:50now.
M: I’ll try. But with such heavy traffic, it will take at least 15 minutes.
(Text 6)
W: I’ve just got the pictures back. Look, this one of us on the beach is just beautiful!
M: Yes, but that other one is good, too.
W: I don’t know why you think so. That dress I’m wearing looks awful. I only bought it because it was half-price.
M: But it’s in good quality. Anyway, the one of us on the boat isn’t bad.
W: Apart from the fact that we look seasick!
(Text 7)
M: Excuse me, Miss. Is there a barbershop near here
W: Yes, sir. It’s on Bl, near the giftshop. You can take any lift down there from here. They’re open now until six o’clock.
M: Thank you. By the way, you’ve done a very good job cleaning the room and making the beds. My wife and I left you a
small tip. We appreciate your hard work very much
W: You are welcome, sir. It’s our pleasure to serve our guests.
(Text 8)
W: Hey, Steve, what’s up I haven’t seen you forages since our graduation. Are you still living in town
M: No, I moved to the coast about a year ago.
W: Nice.
M: Yeah, it is. It’s not a shot as here, either. I’m about five minutes from the ocean.
W: Great. And you’re working at the university, aren’t you
M: Yes. I’m still enjoying it. So what about you
{#{QQABBJ QYQAEgoggAggAAABBJBAAAQQghCCUUwwWUggCEEMEQkBAGACACICooGGwQBAAEIMIAAIAIAwQABFNAABBAAA==}#}#} }
W: Oh, I still live in town. This time last year I moved into my new apartment.
M: No kidding. This time last year I moved to the coast. So where are you working these days
W: At a trading company. It’s a job with a lot of travel and a lot of meetings but it’s fun. I like it.
(Text 9)
W: How can I help you
M: I’m thinking about changing to another university, but I’m not sure. I was hoping you could help me to make the
decision.
W: I’ll try. Why do you want to leave Krypto s University
M: Um… I’m thinking of going to Central University for further education, because it’s in my hometown. I’ve been kind of
homesick. So, I thought it’d be better to be closer to my parents and friends.
W: I see. The first year is usually the hardest. But the longer you stay, the more comfortable you’ll feel. By senior year,
you’ll be glad to stay. And would you keep the same major if you left What is it… business administration
M: Yeah, I would. The credits I’ve earned here will move to Central. I’ve already checked.
W: Well, even though you can still have your credits here, you will have to take extra courses, because Central has different
requirements.
M: Hmm… I didn’t think about that. I guess I’ll find out the exact changing requirements. Thank you for all your help.
(Text 10)
M: People always ask me why I only travel the hard way! A lot of television travel programs are about relaxing holidays on
the beach, but I’ve only ever taken really long trips. The last trip I did was a 50,000-mile journey around the Pacific Ocean,
and it took 12 months. But my very first trip was around the world journey, and the most difficult one was probably a car
journey from the North Pole to the South Pole. As you can imagine, I’ve seen a lot of the world. I’m lucky to be in really
excellent health, but life is very short and I’ve done so much traveling that I want a change. Traveling long distance swears
you out, and although it’s still a great pleasure for me, I want to do something more relaxing now. But the programs I’ve
made about the really long trips will encourage other people to get on a plane and have some adventures. Some people seem
to be afraid of going to a strange country and perhaps being ill there, but maybe they realize now that if I can do these trips,
so can they.
Perhaps if I spend more time at home, I can do more writing. I’ve done two books so far. I write about places I’ve seen and
my feelings about them. I don’t think I’ll ever write fiction or poetry, but I’d be interested in writing newspaper articles.
