一、阅读回答问题
(2022秋·上海·八年级期中)An old song says that “love makes the world go around”. If you watch Americans on Valentine’s Day, you can believe it. The whole country breaks out with little red hearts. Love-struck people give cards, flowers and candy to their sweethearts. You might call it an annual celebration of love.
The American concept of love and romance begins with dating. Young people date in several ways. At first they might have group dates with several boys and girls together. Later, they start going on single date — just one boy and one girl. Sometimes a boy and a girl will go to see a film. Maybe they will go to a party at a friend’s house. Or they might go out to eat.
A friend might even arrange a blind date for you with someone you don’t know. That doesn’t mean you keep your eyes closed the whole evening! You just don’t know who your partner will be until the time of the date. If someone asks you out on any kind of date, and you don’t want to go, you may politely say, “No, thanks.”
Americans view dating differently from people in other countries. American young people see a date as a time just to have fun. They don’t always have a romantic interest in mind. Someone may go out with one person this week, and another the next. After a while, a boy and a girl may decide they want to go steady. This means they think of each other as boyfriend and girlfriend. It also means they don’t want to date anyone else. Romance begins to bloom.
Romance love is very much a part of American culture. Movies, TV shows and books in America all picture people falling in love. Americans know no romance is perfect, but still they try to find the ideal person. Actually, love is a part of every culture, not just American culture. People all over the world search for happiness in a loving relationship. Maybe love does make the world go around.
Please answer the following questions in COMPLETE sentences.
1.In America, what do people give to their sweethearts on Valentine’s Day
2.Young people in America date in different ways, don’t they
3.What does “a blind date” mean
4.When does romance begin to bloom according to Paragraph 4
5.What do you think makes the world go around Why

Do you have the courage to climb mountains Do you have a clear head to stay calm in an emergency (危急) Would you know what to do if somebody broke their leg
Tamsen Bell, an eighteen-year-old girl from California in America, can answer yes to all those questions. She joined the Marine Search and Rescue Team when she was only 14 years old—the youngest age you can do this. She spent the hardest time in the team. She had to be trained for 60 hours to learn about first aid, climbing, map reading and rescue methods before she began to help others. But she achieved a lot from her teacher and teammates. The training gave her the confidence to do the job. Now she is one of 20 youth volunteers in the rescue team whose motto (座右铭) is “Any time, any place, any weather.” They are often called out in the middle of the night to help people who have got into trouble in the wild countryside of California. So she usually had to stay up and got up early the next morning.
When Tamsen was 16 years old, she helped to rescue an old woman who had fallen 50 feet down a steep cliff (陡峭悬崖). The woman broke her neck and couldn’t move. What’s more, it was snowing heavily that afternoon and she had to cover the old lady with her own clothes. She had to stay with the lady for 8 hours until the rescue team could lift her carefully back up the mountain to safety. The next day she had to lie in bed because of the bad cold.
It’s tough work, but Tamsen thinks it’s worth it. She says “The best part of the job is ______________________________________.”

(2022·上海浦东新·八年级校考期中)One day, a farmer’s donkey fell into a dry well. The poor animal cried for hours before his owner finally found him. The farmer tried hard to pull him out from the well but failed. He felt very sorry for the donkey but after carefully thinking about the situation, he decided that he would not save the donkey. Since the donkey was too old and it was not worth the trouble of saving. So he invited his neighbours to help him bury(埋葬) the old donkey in the well so that it would make him end his pain.
Hearing many people coming to help, the old donkey was excited at first. As they began to scoop the dirt into the well with shovels (铲子), he soon realized what was happening. He felt very upset and cried sadly again. As the farmer and his neighbours continued throwing the dirt on his back, he suddenly had a good idea. Some time later, when the farmer finally looked down into the well, he was surprised at what he saw: every time the dirt landed on his back, he would shake it off and take a step up!
Soon, everyone was amazed when the donkey stepped proudly over the edge of the well and ran away quickly! It seemed that it would bury him at first, but it actually helped him later because of the manner in which he faced his trouble.
That is life! Just like the donkey, life is going to throw dirt on us, all kinds of dirt. As long as we face our problems in an active way, and refuse to give in to any trouble, each dirt is like a stepping stone with which we get out of the deepest wells. Never stop and never give up. Success is just on the way.

(2022·上海静安·八年级校考期中)Answer the questions:
Each year several thousand people are killed on the road in Great Britain. Every year between one and two hundred thousand people are injured, or killed in road accidents.
If you are in England and if you listen to the eight o’clock news from BBC, you will often hear news of road accidents. You may hear something like this: “On last Monday evening, at about twenty minutes to ten, a cyclist was knocked down by a truck at crossing of Oak Road and High Street in Croydon. The cyclist had died from his injuries. Anyone who saw the accident please communicate with New Scotland Yard, telephone number Whitehall one, two, one, two.”
Accidents are often caused by carelessness. If everybody obeys the rules, the roads will be much safer. How can we make the road safer
In Great Britain traffic keeps on to the left. Motor-cars, trucks, buses and cyclists must all keep to the left side of the road. In most other countries traffic keeps to the right.
Before crossing the road, stop and look both ways. Look right, look left, look right again. Then, if you are sure that the road is clear, and there is nothing coming, it is safe to cross the road. If you see small children, or very old people, or blind people waiting to cross the road, it is kind to help them to cross the road in safety.
We must teach young children to cross the road safely and set them a good example so that there will be fewer and fewer accidents and our life will be safer.
24.If you listen to eight o’clock news from BBC, what will you hear
25.Accidents aren’t often caused by carelessness, are they
26.Does the traffic in Great Britain keep on to the left or to the right
27.What should you do if you see blind people waiting to cross the road

(2022秋·上海杨浦·八年级上海同济大学附属存志学校校考期中)Getting Creative with crime
An experiment carried out at Newcastle University aimed at reducing the number of bike thefts has produced some unusual results. The most efficient way of stopping people from stealing bikes seems almost too simple to be true. If you want to persuade thieves not to act, make them feel they’re being watched!
Posters showing a large pair of eyes were put up near three bike racks at the university, while other bike racks had no posters. The researchers explained that the number of thefts decreased by 62 per cent compared to the previous year at racks with posters. However, at the other racks, thefts actually increased by 63 per cent. Experts claim that clearly visible images of eyes make people feel they’re being watched. They say that we all care what other people think about us and that’s why we behave better when we think someone is looking. Now officials have agreed to carry out similar projects at train stations all over the country.
The “giant eyes” poster isn’t the only unusual method being used to try and fight crime on UK streets. In the East Midlands city of Leicester, police are inviting people to make large woolly balls and hang them up in trees around the area. They hope that these colourful additions to neighbourhoods will help create a safer place to live. The thinking behind the idea is that if you create a pleasant environment, people are more likely to behave better. “We live in a world where our every move is being watched by CCTV cameras”, one of the organisers told us. “The cameras are there to deter (威慑) possible criminals, but they come at a price, and many people don’t like being watched 24 hours a day. We believe there’s another way. We want to encourage people to take more pride in where they live.”
However, not all residents are happy—many refuse to believe it will make any difference. They’re demanding that the police do more to reduce trouble in the area. One local resident told us, I recommend that the police stop wasting their time on mad plans like this and do some real policing. We need to see more policemen walking around our streets, especially at night.
29.What is the most efficient way of persuading thieves not to act
30.Where were the “giant eyes” posters placed
31.Why did the number of thefts decrease at racks with posters
32.What are the disadvantages of CCTV cameras
33.What does “this” in the last paragraph refer to

Almost everyone shares the same daily routine(例行公事): beginning the day by reading the newspaper, then going off to work and then returning home tired and ready for bed. Younger people in school or college may have a different routine from adults, but their lives are pretty similar. Most people, young or old, can’t find the time or energy to relax and enjoy the day. Luckily, music is here to help us forget our worries and feel peaceful. Besides being pleasant to the ear, music can help us relax. Music is also good because it can teach us something about different languages and cultures and all around the world. Everyone likes music and every country has a history of music to be proud of. From birth to death, we have music along with us. Music, like all forms of art, is another way to add peace to our lives. Modern studies show that relaxing music can do good to our bodies in some way as hard exercise does. Pythagoras, the Greek mathematician, said that some kinds of music could change behavior patterns. Listening to the sounds of music can make us relax ourselves. Music can help people communicate and express their feelings. Every day people enjoy songs on the radio because the songs reflect(反映)their feelings inside. Lovers need love songs for each other. As much as music expresses feelings, it can also change feelings. A sad day can be made happy with the help of music. Sometimes when we feel angry we need angry music to make us feel better. Music can also help people remember something. (2022秋·上海·八年级期中)I grew up in a small town in Italy. One morning when I was 16, Dad told me I could drive him into a village, about 18 miles away, if I took the car to be serviced (保养) at a nearby garage. Thinking that I had just learned to drive, and hardly had the chance to use the car, I agreed happily.
I drove Dad into the village and made sure to pick him up at 4 p.m. Then I drove to a nearby garage and dropped off the car. Because there were still a few hours to be left, I decided to watch movies at a theatre near the garage. But, when the last movie finished, I was two hours late. I was afraid of the result of being late. I thought if Dad knew what I had done, he would never let me drive again. So when I drove up to the place where we had planned to meet and saw Dad waiting patiently on the corner, I told him that I had come as quickly as I could, but the car had needed some special repairs.
“I’m terribly sorry that you feel you have to lie to me, Jason.”
“What do you mean, Dad I’m telling the truth.”
“I called the garage to ask if there were any problems, and they told me that you had not yet picked up the car. So I know there were no problems with the car. I’m angry not with you but with myself. You see, I’ve failed as a father, so I’m going to walk home now and think carefully about where I have gone wrong all these years.”
“But it’s dark, and it’s 18 miles to walk home.”
I pleaded (请求) all the way, telling him how sorry I was. But nothing helped. I had to drive behind him for 18 miles.

What did rulers do for fun
After many hours of working, the emperor would be really tired. What would he do to relax
Writing poems was one of the most common pastimes (常见的消遣). Together with his favored ministers (大臣) or concubines (妃子), the emperor would take a walk in the garden, enjoy nature, and write poems. Emperor Qianlong especially liked poetry. It is said that he wrote more than 40,000 poems throughout his life. What a hobby!
Many emperors also loved calligraphy (书法) and painting. They not only wrote and painted themselves, but also had a huge collection of artwork. In Qianlong’s study room Sanxitang (三希堂), for example, there were priceless calligraphy works by Wang Xizhi (王羲之), Wang Xianzhi (王献之) and Wang Xun (王珣), three famous calligraphers who lived during the Jin Dynasty (265-420).
Watching Chinese operas was another favorite pastime for the emperor. In the Forbidden City, there used to be 11 theaters of different sizes. The small ones were used for daily shows, while the big ones were for special occasions (场合), such as festivals or the royal families’ birthdays. Emperor Qianlong was a big fan of plays. In 1790, he held a grand (大型的) “theater party” for his 80th birthday. The royal theater troupe (剧团) put on a long show titled Shengpingbaofa (《升平宝筏》). Qianlong watched it every day from 5 am to 3 pm for 10 days in all. He must have been a real fan of the show!
Toys in the Forbidden City
1 The music box (八音盒) came from the West. It is a musical instrument that can play music by itself. Emperor Guangxu (1871-1908) quite liked it and was curious about how it worked. One day, he took it apart (拆开) and changed the structure (结构) inside. When he played the box again, to everyone’s surprise, it played Chinese Kunqu Opera (昆曲) instead of Western music!
2 This toy is quite useful – it’s a fan. The little boy can wave automatically to make cool air. It was made by the Imperial Household Department (内务府).
Pavilion of Cheerful Melodies (畅音阁)
Located (坐落在) on the east side of the palace, this three-story pavilion is the biggest theater in the Forbidden City. It would hold shows during festivals and big events. In 2017, when US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump visited the Forbidden City, they watched Chinese opera in this theater.
Pets of the palace
Like many of us, the emperors also raised pets. There used to be many pets in the Forbidden City, including parrots, crickets (蟋蟀) and cats. Emperor Yongzheng’s favorite pets were dogs. He cared a great deal for them. For example, he designed (设计) clothes for dogs himself, and was strict about their quality (质量) and color. He also made beautiful dog cages (笼子) with wool mats (垫子) inside.

Royal family face changes
Dating back to 600 BC, the imperial family of Japan is the world’s oldest continuous monarchy. But for the first time in history, the family, as Reuters put it, “enters uncharted waters”.
The news came on May 17 that Princess Mako, 25, the eldest grandchild of current emperor Akihito, is to be engaged to her college boyfriend Kei Komuro. He is a “commoner”, which is another way of describing someone who isn’t part of the royal family.
This is a big decision. Under Imperial Household Law, which has been in place since 1947, women of the royal family have to give up their royal status if they marry a commoner, and their children will not be royal either.
To add to this, two days later, Japan’s government approved the request of 83-year-old Emperor Akihito to abdicate. It is the first time in nearly 200 years that an emperor has given up his throne instead of letting nature take its course. The emperor’s oldest son, Prince Naruhito, 57, will take over once his father steps down in 2019.
With Princess Mako leaving and Emperor Akihito stepping down, the ever-shrinking imperial family is facing a serious shortage of heirs, given that the Imperial Household Law only allows males to succeed to the throne.
To solve this problem, there has long been a suggestion that the law be changed, with many arguing it no longer suits modern times. And a recent poll by Kyodo News found that 60 percent of Japanese people believe that the children of royal women should be allowed to ascend the throne, while 80 percent are in favor of a female emperor.
But changing the law isn’t easy. Japanese conservatives seem to attach great significance to the males-only succession rule.
“This is all rooted in the concept of the unbroken male bloodline. The notion of what makes Japan special is that it has an imperial line that has been passed down through a male lineage,” Ken Ruoff of Portland State University in the US, an expert on the Japanese monarchy, told the BBC.
It is understandable that some people are afraid of change, just like how sailing in “uncharted waters” can be scary. But this doesn’t mean that it’s not a wise thing to do. As US writer Charles F. Glassman once wrote: “The danger of venturing into uncharted waters is not nearly as dangerous as staying on shore, waiting for your boat to come in.”
64.Which country is the oldest continuous monarchy in the world
65.What is a “commoner”
66.What will happen if a royal member marries a commoner
67.Why isn’t it easy to change the law
68.How many Japanese support a female emperor

Calling the future
When American inventor Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in 1876, it was a revolution in communication. For the first time, people could talk to each other over great distances. Over the last two decades, a new means of spoken communication has appeared: the mobile phone.
The mobile phone is like a two-way radio. But the two-way radio is a limited means of communication. As soon as the users move out of range of each other’s broadcast area, the signal is lost. In the 1940s, researchers experimented with the idea of using a number of radio masts to pick up signals from two-way radios. A caller would always be within range of one of the masts. When he or she moved too far away from one mast, the next mast would pick up the signal. (Scientists referred to each mast’s reception area as being a “cell”. This is why in many countries mobile phones are called “cellphones”.)
However, 1940s’ technology was just at the beginning. The “mobile phones” were huge boxes. They had to be moved by car.
The first real mobile telephone call was made in 1973 by Dr. Martin Cooper. As soon as his invention was complete, he tested it by calling a rival scientist to announce his success. Within a decade, mobile phones became available to the public.
They have changed the way we do a lot of things. One powerful feature is the short message service (SMS) or text message. It’s the perfect communication method for the busy modern lifestyle. The text message has changed the way we write in English. The language construction became more lax. Traditional rules of grammar and spelling are much less important.
Over the last few years, mobiles have become more and more advanced. We have seen the introduction of cameras, global positioning systems and Internet access.
Alexander Graham Bell would be surprised if he could see how far the science of the telephone has developed in less than 150 years. If he were around today, he might say: ‘‘That’s gr8! But I’m v busy rite now. Will call U 2nite.”
69.How many years has the telephone been invented

‘Made in China’ means quality
For a long time, “made in China” made people think of cheap, low-quality goods. China was just the world’s factory. But now Chinese brands are going global and being recognized.
Time magazine recently released a list of the 100 most influential companies in the world. Several Chinese companies were included, such as tech giants Alibaba, Huawei, Tencent, DJI, TikTok and DiDi Chuxing.
These companies are shaping the world with advanced technology. Time reported that DJI holds 70 percent of the global drone market. This year, it launched a new drone with a set of glasses that give users a first-person view of their drone’s flight. TikTok has become one of the most popular apps in the US with its never-ending stream of videos. Some 50 million US users spend an average of 46 minutes on it every day.
Chinese fashion has also attracted global consumers. In 2011, Chinese sneaker brands Feiyue, Huili and Li-Ning gained international attention. More recently, Shein has become one of the most popular Chinese fast fashion brands overseas. In 2020, its operating income reached over 10 billion dollars, an increase of 100 percent over the previous year, Global Times reported. Many European consumers say Shein is affordable, fashionable and of high quality.
In the future, Chinese brands will continue to develop. Thanks to a bigger market, improved supply chains and efficient manufacturing, “this is the best era for the development of local brands,” Yan Qiang, a partner with Beijing-based Hejun Consulting, told Global Times.
74.What will come to people’s minds when we mention “made in China” in the past
75.How did many Chinese companies enter the Time’s list
76.What’s the advantage of DJI’s new drone
77.Why do many European buyers like Shein
78.Why will Chinese brands develop quickly in the future

My class tries to catch a thief
When I walked toward my Forensic Science class, our teacher, Mr. Keller, a humorous and easy-going man, was kneeling down (跪下) by the doorway and staring at the floor.
“Everyone, don’t be afraid. A thief broke into our classroom last night and took my laptop.”
Shocked at first, we all began to feel excited about solving a “real crime”. In the class, we have learned about solving a crime with even very small pieces of evidence (证据). Today is show time.
“The only evidence is this footprint in the doorway,” said Keller. We quickly blocked off the crime scene with tape and my friend Tammy began taking pictures.
“Great job, everybody! We can use aluminum tape to keep the footprint evidence,” Keller told us. “I think the thief is among us.”
“Can we make a plaster cast of each of our shoe prints to see if it matches the footprint in the doorway, right ” I asked.
“Very nice. Let’s do it.” Keller took us to the playground and helped us make plaster casts of our shoe prints. Dirt and sweat were all over our hands and faces, but we were too busy to even notice.
The plaster cast makes it easier to find out the thief. But the result was a big bomb: “Mr. Keller!” One of my classmates, Amily, cried, holding Keller’s plaster cast.
“Bingo! That’s me!” He laughed. “I entered the classroom to get my laptop yesterday. But you did a great job catching the ‘thief’ today.”

Chinese animated legends
Other Chinese culture-inspired animations
1. Monkey King: Hero is Back (2015)
The film is based on the Chinese legend of Monkey King. In the story, Monkey King was imprisoned deep in the mountains after angering gods. Five hundred years later, monsters attack a small village and a child flees to the mountains. Unknowingly, the child releases the Monkey King from his curse. With the help and encouragement from this special child, Monkey King saves the village from the evil monsters.
2. White Snake (2019)
White Snake is based on a popular Chinese folk tale in which a white snake spirit turns into a woman and marries a scholar named Xu Xian. The film, however, focuses on the love story between a white snake spirit and a snake hunter before she goes to West Lake.
When people think of animation, many automatically think about those that come from Japan or the Disney classics that they watched as children. Yet in recent years, China has been making efforts to establish itself on the global animation map. Many Chinese animations not only become mainstream, but also are reviewed highly and bring in large amounts at the box office.
For example, in 2016, the Chinese film Big Fish and Begonia brought in over 200 million yuan just three days after its release. In 2019, the film Ne Zha opened with 100 million yuan in ticket sales and topped the mainland’s ticket-revenue charts for four consecutive days. Recently, after the animation White Cat Legend was released on the video-sharing platform Bilibili in April, it immediately became the top-rated Chinese-language TV drama on the review platform Douban, scoring 9.2 points out of 10.
According to The Paper, the rise of Chinese animation is partly due to its Chinese culture-inspired content and fantastic visual effects.
The TV drama White Cat Legend is set during the rule of Tang Dynasty Empress Wu Zetian. It tells the story of an official named Li Bing attempting to solve crimes with the appearance of a white cat. In order to make the show more attractive to audiences, the producers replicated the architecture and customs of the Tang Dynasty, including the bustling streets, merchants, clothing and utensils.
“The production and visual effect seem to bring us to Tang Dynasty”, an internet user commented on Bilibili.
Similarly, Big Fish and Begonia is based on ancient Chinese legends and follows the grand adventure of a 16-year-old girl named Chun who lives in a magical world beyond the human realm. Using a mixture of 2D drawings and 3D animation, the film is aesthetically impressive. “It is visually dazzling and made very much in the Hayao Miyazaki mode, including an intrepid young heroine and the cultural specificity that characterizes works like the Oscar-winning Spirited Away,” wrote Kenneth Turan, a film critic for the Los Angeles Times.
The excellent visual effects aren’t the only things that make these works stand out. The universal themes have also helped to extend the reach to millions of audiences worldwide.
Big Fish and Begonia teaches people about love and sacrifice, which is a lesson all people need to learn in their lives. In the animation Ne Zha, we can see a rebellious underdog who has to overcome hardship and his dark destiny to become a hero. The theme is about “the rebellious but righteous youth, which young people can relate to, encouraging them to become dream-chasers and fate-changers”, noted China Daily.
With more Chinese producers’ efforts on these aspects, the Chinese animations will be promising in the near future, noted The Paper.

Travel as a volunteer
Volunteering is hardly a new thing for college students. But how about volunteering in Africa
Of course this conjures up stereotypes such as shabby accommodation, unmade roads, malaria and huge expense. With young Chinese’s horizons expanding thanks to the country’s deepening integration with the international community, volunteer work in Africa is gaining momentum.
According to Guangzhou Association of Youth Volunteers, during a recruitment drive in March more than 650 students applied for 18 volunteer jobs in the Republic of Seychelles in Africa.
“The number of college students applying to do volunteer work in Africa has increased over the years,” said Yang Guang, a staff member of the Wuhan Youth League Committee. For Chinese volunteers their African experience can be rewarding.
Pan Di, a 25-year-old from Tianjin Foreign Studies University, went to Kenya two years ago as a volunteer English teacher in a ghetto in Nairobi, the capital.
It was a community of half a million poverty-stricken people. Pan was robbed upon her arrival. Verbal abuse to foreigners was not unusual. Living conditions were even worse than she imagined. Pan admitted she felt frustrated and disappointed.
“But my experiences there taught me to remain calm and collected in the face of adversity or even mistreatment. Now I’m more open-minded,” said Pan.
Li Chen, a Shandong University graduate, found his experience of volunteer work in Africa more substantial.
He did volunteer work as a *publicist for AIDS/HIV in Tanzania last year. Li, 23, made new friends from Canada and the US. They are veteran volunteers who travel around the world working with international organizations and groups.
One of them recommended Li to a Guangzhou-based NGO as an intern and Li was later offered a full-time job there.
“International organizations and NGOs of every kind have a presence in Africa. It is the ideal place to form a network that would help your career in a related field,” said Li.
Zhang Qi, head of Sunshine Volunteer Group, based in Beijing, agrees that volunteering in Africa can be rewarding.
He encourages more students to think out of box and to broaden their horizons in order to cope with China’s international role.
“Many college students are either too busy studying or too confined to campus life to explore the world,” said Zhang.
“Travel abroad as a volunteer is one of the best ways to open one’s eyes.”

Bitter cold
As the temperatures have dropped dramatically in recent weeks, you will hear more and more sneezing and “bless you” afterwards. Everyone seems to be talking about this year’s flu season. A news report from the US made the cold season sound even more horrible last week.
The US Food and Drug Administration is considering banning the sale of over-the-counter cough and cold medicines for young children because of its weak treatment and unsafe side effects.
What should you do if the doctors are still arguing about what to write on the prescription If you do get sick, knowing what to do can help you feel better faster.
How can you prevent getting a common cold
★Practice preventative measures: wash your hands, and keep your fingers away from your eyes and nose.
★Avoid close contact with cold sufferers.
★Help your immune system: get plenty of rest, drink lots of water, eat well-balanced meals, sleep for 7-8 hours per night and take regular exercise.
Try these tips if you get the flu:
★Drink lots of fluids.
★Get lots of sleep and take it easy. This is a great time to chill with your favorite DVDs without your mom or dad asking you to help out around the house!
★Take painkillers to relieve fever and aches. Over-the-counter cold or cough medicines may also relieve some flu symptoms. Avoid taking aspirin, though, unless your doctor says it’s OK. Aspirin can put teens at greater risk of developing another serious illness that sometimes follows infection with the flu virus.
★Wear layers. You might be cold one minute and hot the next, and wearing several layers—like a T-shirt, sweatshirt and robe—makes it easy to add or remove clothes as needed.
★Wash your hands frequently. You don’t want to spread the flu to everyone else, if you can help it. Also, avoid sharing cups and eating utensils with other people.
★ Get the flu vaccine in advance. Flu vaccines are available commonly as a shot. The shot contains killed flu viruses that won’t cause people to get the flu, but will cause the body to make antibodies to fight off infection by the live flu virus. Getting a shot of the killed virus causes your body to be protected against the particular type of live flu virus that’s in the vaccine.
The flu shot is about 80 percent effective against the flu, which means that a few people who get the shot will still possible to get the flu. In addition, the shot only contains certain strains of the virus.
94.What kind of medicines have unsafe side effects
95.What can we do to help your immune system
96.Why should we avoid taking aspirin
97.What should we do if we don’t want to spread the flu to others
98.What can killed flu viruses do

Polite problems
I’ve noticed a scary amount of politeness lately, and it has made me a little nervous.
I say “scary” because I am not used to being met at the door of a business and led to the proper area of a store to find what I need.
In more familiar times, one would walk into a department store unnoticed, go up to a sales associate, and find him or her talking on a telephone.
You would wait for a minute or so to ask a question of the person, usually a woman. And she, finally deciding to notice you, would turn to face you and say “Yes ” impatiently.
You would ask if her department have a certain popular brand and she would point and say “If we do, they’re over there” and turn back to her phone.
That type of behavior still exists in many stores. But I have noticed a Type B associate lately.
For instance, I was at a store the other day to purchase a battery.
I was met at the door by a friendly woman who gave me a basket, asked what I was looking for, and led me to the battery I needed.
On the very same day, I stopped at a nearby grocery store. I was looking for a special type of bread and the associate wanted to lead me to that too. I said no since I knew where it was, but she led me there anyhow.
Everyone was so sweet that I felt like I was drowning in maple syrup.
Later, I was on the phone to an incredibly polite bank associate who could not help me with an online request. He was so upset that he couldn’t do so that I felt him nearly collapse. With sadness in his voice, he said I had to appear in person at a nearby branch to do my business because they needed me to give them my Social Security number in person. I said, “not a chance” and hung up, but then I began to worry if I had made him kill himself. I think his name was Gary.
Gary, if you’re out there, think of your mom and your little sisters and don’t do anything crazy. It’s just that I’m not used to politeness from a banker, and I forgive your sweetness.
99.Why does the author feel nervous when someone is extremely polite to him
100.What does the author think of walking into a department store unnoticed
101.Why didn’t the author want the associate to lead him to the bakery
102.What did the author feel when people were so sweet
103.What is the author’s attitude towards the banker

Communication gap
Shi Jianfei, 21, is a mechanical manufacturing and automation major at Beijing Information Science and Technology University. He encountered an academic problem during the summer vacation but it took him a lot of determination to finally approach his professor at school to solve the problem. To his surprise, the meeting turned out to be quite pleasant.
But only a few students turn to their professors to ask for advice in solving problems or discuss academic topics with them. According to a poll of 2,636 college students conducted by MyCOS, a Beijing-based consultancy, more than a third of them contact their professors less than once a year.
Although most students and teachers are willing to communicate with each other, it seems that an effective communication mechanism is absent.
Shi says most of his professors share their contact details with students in the first class, but students tend not to take advantage of this.
“Communication usually takes place in class or between classes, because it’s difficult to get in touch with professors at any other time,” he says. “University professors always look very busy.”
Pressure
However, from the faculty’s perspective, students are too cautious about communicating with professors.
“They’re worried about asking questions they think may leave a bad impression,” says Du Xiguang, professor of chemistry at Northeast Normal University.
Wu created a QQ group in which students can discuss various issues with him, ranging from academic topics to personal problems.
“I find they are very talkative in this group because all of them are anonymous. But if they talk to me in person, they’re shy and nervous,” he says.
His view is echoed by Wu Qian, 22, an English major at Tsinghua University. Wu admits that when she encounters problems she prefers talking to her classmates and upper classmen.
“I think many students are too shy and passive, myself included. I feel more comfortable communicating with my peers,” she says.
Different styles of teaching
Cheng Haonan, 20, a space science and technology major at Nanjing University, offers another reason why students don’t form strong relationships with professors.
“We only meet our professor once or twice a week. That’s a lot less than the frequency with which we met our teachers in high school. Some professors can’t even remember my name,” says Cheng.
Du also attributes the shyness of many students to a change in teaching styles. In primary school, Chinese students get used to talking with their teachers because they’re like “nannies” who not only teach, but also watch out for their students’ personal development.
“In college, such communication isn’t *compulsory anymore and students aren’t pushed to discuss their ideas with professors,” says Du. “The real problem is that students aren’t yet ready to engage in adult conversation with professors. Some of them just expect professors to explain facts and help them prepare for exams, like in high school.”
Chen Yongmei, an associate professor at Beijing Forestry University, tackles this problem by taking the initiative. Since she only teaches one class a week, Chen invites one or two students for lunch every day. During lunch, they discuss academic and personal problems.
“Most students make use of this mechanism, but a few of them don’t,” she says. “In the latter case, I gradually lose the passion for communicating with them because this isn’t middle school. I’m happy to talk to them, but I don’t want to force them into a conversation they’re uncomfortable with.”

33.What does “this” in the last paragraph refer to
34.Do you believe the second method will work Why or why not
【答案】29.Making them feel they’re being watched. 30.Near three bike racks at the university. 31.Because clearly visible images of eyes make people feel they’re being watched. 32.The cameras come at a price, and many people don’t like being watched 24 hours a day. 33.It refers to inviting people to make large woolly balls and hang them up in trees around the area. 34.No, I don’t. 33.根据“In the East Midlands city of Leicester, police are inviting people to make large woolly balls and hang them up in trees around the area.”可知在英格兰东部城市莱斯特,警方邀请人们制作大毛球,并将它们挂在附近的树上,this指代这个行为。故填It refers to inviting people to make large woolly balls and hang them up in trees around the area.

【导语】本文介绍了日本的皇室换位的一些历史和近况。
64.由第一段“Dating back to 600 BC, the imperial family of Japan is the world’s oldest continuous monarchy.”可知,日本皇室的历史可以追溯到公元前 600 年,是世界上最古老的连续君主制国家。故答案为Japan.
65.由第二段“He is a ‘commoner’, which is another way of describing someone who isn’t part of the royal family.”可知,“commoner”是描述不属于皇室成员的人的另一种说法,故答案为A commoner is someone who isn’t part of the royal family.
66.由第三段 “…women of the royal family have to give up their royal status if they marry a commoner, and their children will not be royal either.” 可知,皇室女性如果嫁给平民,就必须放弃皇室身份,她们的孩子也不会成为皇室成员。故答案为He/She has to give up his/her royal status and their children will not be royal.
67.由全文倒数第三段“But changing the law isn’t easy. Japanese conservatives seem to attach great significance to the males-only succession rule.”可知,日本保守派非常重视男性继承规则。故答案为Because Japanese conservatives seem to attach great significance to the males-only succession rule.
