Diving into mid-autumn legends and customs

The Empress of Heaven gave him a magic pill as a reward. This pill would make him live forever. However, Chang’e took the pill by accident. Then she flew to the moon and lived there forever.
Another legend tells the story of a woodcutter named Wu Gang. He had to cut down trees because he once made the Jade Emperor angry. But the magical tree kept growing back. So he had to work endlessly.

Hello and welcome to my blog!
My name is Naomi. I am 16 years old. For the past two months, I have been living in Southampton, England, as an exchange student.
I arrived in Southampton on July 13. It felt unreal to think about living in a new country and in a new family for one year. On my first day, my host mum Tracy showed me around the neighborhood, and we drove down to the sea. The weather was great, and everything looked beautiful.
My school started the week after. I had chosen my subjects before. I had to do English and Math, and I chose History, Geography and Film Studies. The Itchen Sixth Form College is a big school with about 2,000 students who are between the ages of 16 and 19. My school day starts at 8:40 and ends at 15:30. During the week, I don’t do that much with my free time. Sometimes, I stay in school a little longer to talk with my friends, and then I go home and do my homework.
Due to COVID-19, students take only two classes per day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. In this way, we don’t have to change rooms very often and won’t need to walk too close to one another in the narrow hallways. All the teachers are really nice and supportive.
The school used to organize trips to London or Winchester for its exchange students. However, because of COVID-19, everything is canceled right now. That’s why we have planned some day trips ourselves! A few weeks ago, I went with some of my friends to Portsmouth, a seaside city about an hour’s drive from Southampton. We visited the Spinnaker Tower and saw the city from above. The view was magnificent.
So, this has been my first two months in England. I hope you enjoyed reading my first entry. I am looking forward to telling you about all of the experiences I have over the coming months.

(2022·上海·八年级统考期中)A day at the shops can help you live longer, and surprisingly, the benefits are actually greater for men, says a study group from Taiwan. The study even suggests that shopping regularly is better than going to the gym. Seeing friends and just people-watching can stave off loneliness and improve psychological health, suggests the study. It looked at almost 1850 people aged 65 and over living alone at home in Taiwan, who were asked how often they went shopping. They found those who shopped daily lived longer than those who shopped less, with thinking of people’s physical or other health problems. By comparing with those who didn’t often go out to the shops had the best life record, with a 28% cut in their chances of dying, while older women saw a bit fewer benefits with a 23% cut in dying. The researchers said, “An elder who shops less for food would be at risk of poorer diet to keep healthy. This makes a bad cycle. Shopping less causes poor health and poor health causes less shopping. ” But the study added, “In shopping situations, communicating with, or watching others can provide social and mental benefits. ” “Compared with other types of spare-time physical activity, like exercise, which usually needs motivation and sometimes professional instruction, shopping is easier to keep on.”

Late for our shoveling date
There was a big snowstorm last night. It even knocked out the power around our neighborhood. Around 11 pm last night, my sister and I called several friends with our mobile phones. We decided to shovel snow the next morning at 8 am.
After getting up, my sister and I prepared to go out.
“Hurry up, Alexa!” I shouted as I struggled with the door knob, which was difficult to turn in my heavy gloves. “We are going to be late!”
My sister Alexa showed up from around the corner and helped me with the door knob before putting on her gloves.
We were going to meet other friends to shovel snow. I smiled as we arrived at the meeting spot. I looked around.
“Where’s Erica ” I asked. “She promised she’d be here.”
“I don’t know,” Cassie, our cousin, replied, “we called her an hour ago, but there was no reply.”
“All right. Let’s get to work,” Alexa said.
A few hours later, we all gathered at our house to drink hot chocolate when Erica knocked on the door.
“Where were you ” I asked as I let her in.
“I’ve been at home! Why didn’t you guys call ” she asked.
“We did, but why didn’t you answer ” Cassie snapped.
“You must have called when I was drying my hair – I didn’t hear it ring,” Erica explained.
Alexa stood up. “Really Erica, why didn’t you help us shovel ”

While the idea behind cloning (克隆) your dead pet sounds like something out of a sci-fi (科幻) novel, the technology is not actually all that new. Briefly speaking, cloning is to make a copy of any living things or a cell (细胞). It is always a hot topic of discussion among scientists and even ordinary people.
You must have heard of the famous sheep, Dolly. It was the first successful man-made cloning animal in 1984. But long before that, in 1958, F.C. Steward grew whole carrot plants from carrot root cells, which encouraged the idea that cloning from animals’ cells may be possible. After more than twenty years, in 2005, the first cloned (克隆) dog—Snuppy was born. It was a pet dog. And scientists were able to re-clone him and create four more “Snuppy” in 2017. While one of them died, the other three were all healthy.
Many people still share concerns about (担忧) cloning animals. They believe that cloning could cause health problems. The cloning company claims that cloned animals have even fewer chances to meet health problems than non-cloned animals. The cloning company hopes that the process will become more common and acceptable.
For pet owner, cloning their dead pets can deal with their sadness. But the cloning process is by no means a quick fix. “It is not a rebirth,” Rodriguez, the manager of a cloning company said. “It’s the memory of that original animal and I think that’s what our clients are hoping to get. I don’t think they want to replace that animal. They’re just looking to get a part of that animal back.”
However, not all people support the idea of cloning. They believe that if cloning is used for bad purpose, it surely will create great problems that we cannot imagine and lead to the destruction of humankind.

Let’s play Chinese chess
Last month, a new chess game called Chinese chess came out in Apple’s App Store. This old Chinese game is available (可利用的) for iPhone and iPod Touch users. People can play Chinese chess against a friend or a computer with different levels.
As part of Chinese culture, Chinese chess is popular both in China and abroad. Many overseas Chinese play the game as a way of entertainment (娱乐) and developing (弘扬) Chinese culture.
Chinese chess is a two-player board game with a total of 32 pieces in red and black. Among all these pieces, King is the most important. It must remain in the palace. If it gets checked (被“将死”), the game is over. So the object (目的) of the game is to check the other’s King while protecting one’s own King.
Chinese chess has a long history in China. There are many sayings about its origin. Some believe that Chinese chess appeared during the Warring States Period (战国时期). Others believe that Emperor Shun (舜帝) invented the game to educate his younger brother Xiang. That might be why the game’s Chinese name is xiangqi.
Today some foreigners enjoy playing Chinese chess. In their eyes, Chinese chess can help them better communicate with Chinese people and learn Chinese culture. More and more foreigners take part in the World Chinese Chess Championship every two years.

Story with no end
Bastian Balthazar Bux is a boy with a problem. In fact, he has many problems. His father is doing a bad job raising him, but that’s because Dad has a problem of his own: he cannot get over the death of his wife. Bastian’s life at school is troubled too. The other kids pick on him, leading him to skip school a lot.
It doesn’t sound like a fantasy story so far, does it Fantasy is supposed to take us away from the unpleasantness of life, not rub our noses in it. But this is just where the fantasy begins. One day, running away from bullies at school, Bastian hides in a bookshop. There he finds a book that appeals to him, and he steals it and takes it home.
Bastian becomes immersed in the book. It drags him in, just as we are dragged into fantasy books. The book he reads, like the book we read, is called The Neverending Story.
The story spellbinds Bastian. It tells of a land called Fantastica. Fantastica is sick, and the person most sick is its ruler, The Childlike Empress.
The reason for the sickness is a kind of war that is being waged on Fantastica by a force called Nothing. The Empress asks a boy, Atreyu, to help her battle Nothing before it conquers Fantastica.
But what of Bastian, sitting hidden away, reading the story from his stolen book He becomes part of the tale himself. The Empress gives Bastian a vital job: to join forces with Atreyu in the struggle against Nothing. Now this book, which began as the story of a lonely, bullied, unhappy boy, really becomes a fantasy.
But even though Bastian has now entered the pages of a fantasy fiction book, he has brought his troubles with him. He has problems dealing with the challenges brought by his new life. When The Childlike Empress gives him a magic gem called Auryn, he abuses it for selfish ends.
Once Bastian finds his true self, he can help the Empress, Atreyu and Fantastica and make his way back into the real world.
Like Bastian, we can find ways to solve our troubles with enough commitment. In The Neverending Story, young readers can find a wonderful fantasy that also offers a positive message about their own world.

What’s My Line
“One of my actors is sick! He has just one line and you’re the only one who fits his clothes!” One afternoon, the school drama director suddenly shouted to me. She looked so nervous and worried that I felt sorry for her and said, “OK”.
“You will be fine. It’s easy!” She said. But it wasn’t easy at all. On the stage, four other actors and actresses spoke their lines, and I opened my mouth. Nothing came out. I couldn’t even breathe. I just wanted to leave. The next thing I knew, I was running off the stage.
When I was running off the stage, I accidentally knocked over a glass of grape juice that was on a table. The purple juice hit the girl next to me — Andrea, the leading actress of the drama. She gave me a nasty look. I thought she was going to kill me!
But then, Andrea quickly said, “Darling, you’re so silly! Let’s toast (干杯) to my darling’s silliness! Cheers!” She quickly took another glass of grape juice and drank it. The other actors quickly followed Andrea’s lead and saved the scene. The audience (观众) thought my mistake was part of the play!
