(2023·广东深圳·八年级深圳市海湾中学校考期中)Life can be lonely when you live alone. That’s why I decided to adopt (收养) a cat this year. But the process (过程) is more difficult than I expected.
There are many abandoned (被弃养的) cats all over Beijing. Some of them are abandoned because their owners have recently had a child. Others are abandoned because their foreign owners have moved back to their home countries. And still others are abandoned simply because their owners no longer want them.
Therefore, pet adoption agencies (机构) are very strict about who they allow to adopt pets. Before I could adopt a cat, I had to fill out a long application form (申请表) that included questions such as“Are you single ”and “How much money do you make each month ”
But it didn’t end there after filling out the application. In the second stage, I still had to travel to a different part of the city to see the cat in person and then talk with the adoption agency. They wanted to make sure that we could get along and I would take good care of the cat.
And even then, the cat you want to adopt might be adopted by others by the time you can adopt him or her. In my case, a rescue worker adopted the cat ahead of me. But I’m glad that these cats can find good homes. And in the end, I did finally find a sweet baby cat of my own.

(2023·广东深圳·八年级深圳市海湾中学校考期中)Polar bears (北极熊) have thick fur and big paws, and they are well prepared for life in their hard environment. In fact, they need the Arctic sea (北冰洋) ice for survival (生存). However, global warming (全球变暖) is causing larger and larger areas of summer sea ice to melt. Experts (专家) say that if global warming continues, the Arctic could be free of summer sea ice by 2050. It may cause some of the world’s polar bears to lose their homes.
Polar bears can’t survive for long on land. Seals (海豹) are their main food. The only place for polar bears to hunt seals is on the ice. Although polar bears are strong swimmers, it’s not easy for them to catch seals in the water. To catch a seal, they wait beside the seal’s breathing hole in winter. They often have to wait many hours before the seal comes up for air. When the seal comes up, the polar bear kills it with its paw. In summer, polar bears eat very little and wait for the sea ice to return.
With the sea ice forming later in the year and melting earlier, polar bears do not have enough chance to hunt and eat. Less sea ice makes it more difficult for polar bears to catch seals. Polar bears must swim longer to search for food. This can cause polar bear babies to become separated from their mothers, who provide them with food.
6.What can we learn from Paragraph 1
A.Polar bears will die out by 2050. B.Polar bears are killed by some people.

A.增加 B.融化 C.抬高 D.破碎
8.What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us
A.Where polar bears live. B.Why polar bears catch seals.
C.How polar bears catch seals. D.What polar bears’ behaviour is.
9.According to paragraph 3, why is it more difficult for polar bears to catch seals
A.Because the sea ice is becoming less.
B.Because the sea ice is forming earlier.
C.Because polar bears can’t swim as fast as before.
D.Because polar bears and their babies have to live separately.

(2022·广东广州·八年级校联考期中)As we are writing this book, we are in Venice, Italy, speaking at a meeting on cultural differences.
If we had never travelled to Italy, we would have been shocked by what we’d experienced. All cultures walk on the same side of the pavement as they drive on the road. This means if you’re British, Australian, South African or a New Zealander, you drive and walk to the left. What you’d find is that Italians sometimes bump into you as you walk on the pavement because, as they come near and you move to your left, they move to their right.
You’d also be shocked when you go to shake hands to say goodbye to an Italian but, instead, you get a kiss on both cheeks. “As I was leaving, the Italian man kissed me on both cheeks. I was tying my shoelaces(鞋带) at the time!” Woody Allen wrote in her article.
As you talk with local Italians, they seem to stand in your space, holding your arms, talking over the top of you, shouting in fact, and sounding angry about everything. But these things are a normal part of everyday friendly Italian communication. Not all things in all cultures mean the same things.
When they talk, Italians use their entire arms and body, while English people and Germans stand at attention. Italians keep their hands held high as a way to mean that they want to go on talking. Arm touching during an Italian conversation doesn’t show love or affection, but is nothing more than a way of stopping the listener from raising his hands and taking the turn to talk. To interrupt an Italian you must catch his hands in mid air and hold them down.
16.Which of the following is true
A.Italians drive and walk to the right.
B.Italians drive on the same side as the British.
C.Italians like to bump into others when they walk.
D.Italians do not walk on the same side as they drive.
17.What does an Italian do to say goodbye
A.To shake hands. B.To tie the shoelaces. C.To stand at attention. D.To kiss on both cheeks.
18.If you want to stop an Italian from talking, you’ll have to ________.
A.move your entire body B.hold down his hands C.look at the floor D.raise his hands
19.The passage mainly wants to tell the readers that ________.
A.all cultures drive and walk on the same side B.if you walk in Italy, don’t bump into others

(2023·广东广州·八年级校联考期中)In Ireland, scientists studied a group of 42 cats. They gave them three tasks. One was to give them some delicious food out of a plate. They found that the male cats preferred to use their left paw, and the female cats preferred to use their right paw.
Being left-handed or right-handed can also include eyes, ears, claws and even tails. In Italy, scientists discovered that dogs wag their tails to the right when they see something that they like. When they see something that they don’t like, their tails go to the left.
There are lots of fun examples. Left-handed dolphins swim in a different direction around the pool. Elephants like to swing their trunks(象鼻) in one direction. Even snakes prefer to curl up(蜷缩起来) only one way.
Many people believe that polar bears are left-handed. They say that polar bears cover their black nose with their right paw, which helps them hide in the snow when they are hunting. Then they can sneak up(慢慢靠近) on an animal, and their left paw will be free to catch it.
Scientists, however, disagree. Some have watched polar bears for thousands of hours. They never saw the bears cover their nose during a hunt. They also saw no evidence(证据) that they were left-handed. Without taking any notice of this, many websites continue to say that polar bears are left-handed.
Scientists are still learning about animals and their body languages. If you see an animal the next time, try finding out yourself which it prefers—left or right.

B.all animals are left-handed
C.being left-handed or right-handed can also include eyes, ears, claws and even tails

(2022秋·广东深圳·八年级校联考期中)People pay close attention to 5G these years. So, what is 5G The “G” stands for the generation of your mobile network. 5G is the 5th generation mobile networks and it’s a hundred times faster than 4G.
The first 5G video call was made on a Huawei Mate X smartphone on March 30, 2019. Shanghai has also become the first city in China to start testing 5G networks. Monaco became the first country in Europe to use a next-generation 5G mobile phone network based on technology from Chinese company Huawei.
It sounds obvious, but it’s important to understand just how much faster 5G is compared to current 4G speeds. 5G will not only be many, many times faster than your existing connection, and it will be greatly faster than the broadband connection you have at home.
Now, 4G takes about 100 to 200 milliseconds to send and receive data. But 5G will get it down to 1 millisecond or less. This big change will not only make our mobile Internet faster. It can be used in many other ways as well.
For example, 5G will help make self-driving cars safer. Today’s self-driving test cars have one problem-lag. When the car “sees” an obstacle (障碍), it sends this information to a data centre and receives instructions. However, it takes time to send and receive this information. With this kind of lag, the cars might crash because they don’t receive instructions in time. With 5G, this lag will be greatly lowered, making the cars safer, according to CNN. 5G could also be used to power the Internet of Things (IOT). This refers to a large online network that connects all things and people. Fast Internet speeds will be the key to developing this technology. For example, with IOT under 5G, your fridge could automatically (自动地) place an order online for eggs when it finds that there are no eggs left inside.
All in all, 5G will shape every type of technology that it touches. And you won’t have to wait too long for that to happen. Though we’ve seen a lot of positive progress just in the last year, we still have a long way to go before 5G is anywhere near as common as 4G is right now.

(2022·广东深圳·八年级深圳中学校联考期中)Folklore(民间传说) has long been passed down from one generation to the next. However, the National Trust has shown the development of technology is causing folklore to die out because it has nothing to do with modern life. It says that in a world filled with smartphones and the Internet, legends of magical blacksmiths(铁匠) are no longer of interest to children who have never put coal on the fire.
Jessica Monaghan, head of the National Trust’s Experiences and Programming, called on the public to share their knowledge of folklore from different areas of the UK to keep it alive. “The legends and traditions tell us so much about our ancestors(祖先) and their relationship with the world around them,” she said. “Through the legends, we can learn about what makes communities around the UK special and what has tied us together.”
“In the 16th century, the walnut was taken as a treatment for brain illnesses simply because they are similar in shape. Few people today would believe this because we have advanced medical knowledge and scientific methods,” said Dee Dee Chainey, author of A Treasury of British Folklore. But she thinks there are still chances for folklore as many people try to learn about old legends.
Folklore should be rewritten and retold in new ways with new characters and new lessons that are related to modern life. And that’s what folklore is about—taking the old wisdom and traditions and re-describing them for who we are and the lives we have now.
74.What problem is described in Paragraph 1
A.Children misunderstood folklore.
B.Children depend on smartphones much.
C.Folklore disappears slowly in modern life.

A.It is a danger to science. B.It will probably come back.
C.It is useless to people today. D.It will be left behind by people.
77.What is the writer’s suggestion according to the last paragraph
A.Keeping folklore by making some changes.
B.Collecting more interesting folklore.
C.Holding on to old traditions and following them.
D.Encouraging children to learn more about folklore.
78.What is the main idea of the passage
A.Folklore isn’t so important as it used to be.

However, the bad news is that humans are seemingly born to be lazy in order to save energy, according to Professor Christoper Hsee, a scientist at Chicago University.
In a study, 98 students were asked to complete two surveys. After they had completed the first, they had to wait 15 minutes to receive the next one. They were given a choice of either handing in the first survey nearby or at a farther place they had to walk to. No matter which choice they made, they received a chocolate bar. It turned out that 68 students chose the lazy option. Those who had taken the walk reported feeling happier than those who had stayed put (待在原处).

A.move your entire body B.hold down his hands C.look at the floor D.raise his hands
19.The passage mainly wants to tell the readers that ________.
A.all cultures drive and walk on the same side B.if you walk in Italy, don’t bump into others
C.things do not mean the same in all cultures D.if you travel to Italy, you will be shocked

(2023·广东广州·八年级广州市第一中学校考期中)Dragons are not real animals, but look like a combination of many animals such snakes, fish and deer. They have two horns and a long moustache. With fantastic power, they fly in the sky or dive in the sea. They can breathe out fire and they can make rain, too. The Chinese dragon is a symbol of strength and good luck. The emperors of ancient China loved dragons. Their clothes were covered with pictures of dragons.
We are proud to call ourselves the “descendants(传人)of the dragon”. In Chinese, excellent people are often called “dragons”. A number of Chinese sayings and idioms talk about dragons, for example, “Hoping one’s child will become a dragon”.
It is said that people born in the Year of the Dragon have certain characteristics. They are creative, confident, brave and quick-tempered. There are some famous “dragons” who have done excellent things, such as the great man Deng Xiaoping, and the Kongfu star Li Xiaolong. They are all very successful.
There are also some traditional festivals about dragons in China, such as Dragon Head-raising Day and Dragon Boat Festival. We have different kinds of activities to celebrate them. These two festivals come every year, but the Year of the Dragon comes every twelve years.

59.Which city first tested 5G
A.Beijing. B.Guangzhou. C.Shenzhen. D.Shanghai.
60.What can we learn about from Paragraph 2

(2022秋·广东广州·八年级广州市第十六中学校考期中)Research has found that the secret to happiness is keeping busy. Keeping your minds busy with tasks can help you keep off your negative emotions(负面情绪). No matter how meaningless they are.
Prof. Hsee said that keeping busy helped keep people happy. He said the findings, reported in the journal Psychological Science, might have an effect on policies (政策).
“Governments may increase the happiness of idle citizens by having them build bridges that are actually useless,” he suggested.
As for ordinary people, he advised, “Get up and do something, anything. Even if there really is no point to what you are doing, you will feel better for it.” He added, “Thinking deeply or engaging in self-reflection (自我反省) can be regarded as keeping busy, too.” “You do not need to be running around. You just need to be engaged, either physically or mentally.”
