This week, my dog of almost 14 years died. What I lost was not just a pet dog. She was so much more than that. I don’t even remember my life without her.
My dog only cost $40. She was among hundreds of dogs at Philadelphia’s Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) . PAWS is the largest animal shelter in my city. It is also a “no-kill” shelter. Many other shelters, however, are unable to be “no-kill”because of the large number of animals they have. Nearly sixty percent of dogs that enter these shelters end up being euthanized (meaning “killed in a peaceful way”)
This number could be lowered if more people decided to adopt an animal rather than purchasing one. When you adopt a pet from a shelter, you are not only giving your chosen animal a loving home. You are also saving the lives of many others as you help to free up space for them.
Adopting an animal is much cheaper than buying one. Since the COVID-19 pandemic broke out, many people have had lower incomes than usual. More people have turned to adopting dogs. The idea behind the adoption of a dog is good. However, some animal shelters are worried that after the pandemic is over, some of these new pet owners might become, busy again and no longer have time to care for their animals. These animals might end up back on the street and in the end being put down. So before you take in an animal, think about why you want to do so. Do you truly love it, or do you just want to save money
I like to think back to when I adopted my dog almost 14 years ago. I’m proud that I gave her the life she deserved. Pets can make wonderful additions to our lives. However, almost any pet, including those without a large price tag, can do this. We should never allow man’s best friend to be let down by a system that kills because there is no room.

8.Where did the writer get the pet dog
9.What caused many people to turn to adopting dogs

(2022秋·上海奉贤·九年级校联考期中)Answer the questions.
What will the house of the future look like Could it have gardens on its walls, or a pool with fish for dinner Architects believe that they are all possibilities. The only thing for sure is that the houses will be as green as possible.
The tree house
Many architects in the world would like to build a “tree house.” Like a leaf, the surface of the house collects sunlight during the day. The energy can be used to heat water, produce electricity, and even create fresh air for the home. The “root” of the house is deep under the ground. It uses the soil (土壤) to control the home’s temperature.
The Lizard house
Like a lizard (蜥蜴), changing colour with the weather is the most important design of a lizard house. When it’s in the bright sun, the cover of the house will turn dark to protect it from strong heat. During dark days, it turns white and takes in as much light and heat as possible to produce energy.
Meals at home
The future of food production (生产) will be one part of the house design. Gardens may appear on the outside walls of the house. People can plant tomatoes, carrots and green tea on them. So every day in the morning, you just need to walk outside and collect your meals.
Learning from the past
Looking to the future isn’t the only way to be green. Sometimes, ancient techniques (技术) can also help cut down energy use. For example, a chimney (烟囱) in the future house can be a useful air-conditioner because it is easier for hot air to go out at the chimney.

Over a hundred years ago people in London were surprised to see a very unusual boat come sailing up the Thames River. The boat was eighty feet long, flat-bottomed, with big wooden eyes on both sides in the front and was colourfully painted at the back.
People came to know that it was a sailing boat from Fuzhou in distant China. The boat had sailed round the Cape of Good Hope, up the western coast of Africa, and finally to England. It had covered fifteen thousand miles…more than half of the distance round the world.
Although it was unexpected, the Chinese were warmly welcomed. The boat carried goods (货物) such as silk and tea as well as a number of gifts from the Emperor of China for the Queen of England.
People had always mistakenly thought of the Chinese as a people who were not used to the sea. However, from centuries of trading and sailing in dangerous seas, the Chinese had learned how to build good boats and sail them well.
The coming of this sailing boat to London proved once again the Chinese could sail to distant countries in the world.

The Moments (朋友圈) section of WeChat has become a popular part of the social networking platform (平台). You can share everything about your life on it with your friends. Some students had a discussion on whether to allow our parents to see our moments.
Yes No
Stella, 16: I think it’s meaningful to let parents see our Moments. Some say that without parents’ involvement (参与), they feel free when sharing things online. However, as teenagers, sometimes we do need our parents’ guidance, especially in term of social experiences. What’s more, shutting them off may make the generation gap bigger and bigger, while inviting them in can help us communicate and feel closer to each other. Denny, 16: Most of my friends keep their parents out of their Moments. They argue that if their parents get involved, they will feel upset. However, I feel happy when my parents comment(评论) on my posts in my Moments. It shows their love and care for me. It also makes them happy and stops them from worrying about me. We’ll leave them when we grow up. Why not cherish (珍惜) every opportunity to interact (互动) with them Robin, 16: I don’t allow my parents to see my Moments. Everyone needs some privacy and we all have our own secrets and lifestyles. If my parents could see my posts there, they may push me around with their ideas, nagging (唠叨) at me to do as they wished, which would be unacceptable to me even though it would show their love and care. After all, appropriate distance unites the family better. Laura, 16: I believe blocking (屏蔽) our parents in Moments is not a bad idea, as the generation gap can be a great problem. Online social media is mainly a way of communicating with friends of our own age. We can have more freedom to develop our thoughts and interests. Besides, we don’t have to worry about our parents’ presence. To enable them to read our daily posts would create a lot of misunderstandings.
37.According to the passage, what can you share with your friends on the Moments section of WeChat
38.Why does Stella think it’s meaningful to let parents see our Moments
39.How do most of Denny’s friends deal with their Moments, block their parents or let them see
40.Robin doesn’t allow his parents to see his Moments, does he
41.What’s the advantages of blocking our parents in Moments according to Laura’s opinion
42.Do you think your parents should be allowed to see your Moments Why or why not

However, I feel happy when my parents comment(评论) on my posts in my Moments. It shows their love and care for me. It also makes them happy and stops them from worrying about me.
