It all began in 1995, when Brian was still a firefighter. A car accident caused serious damage to his 1 . After several months of treatment, Brian’s doctors said that he would never talk again and would have to spend the rest of his life in a nursing home.

They kept talking to him day and night, until one day, he said one word, then another, and all of a sudden was talking like a normal person again! Brian was so 3 that he decided to set up a home for birds which are not wanted by their owners.
Now 15 years later, his house is home to about 80 birds including many kinds of birds like several macaws, cockatoos and African grays. The birds fly around from room to room, some cackling, others talking like humans. Though they all have big ages, Brian lets them fly freely inside the house.
Over the year, Brian has developed a special relationship with birds. The birds who bite other humans, seem to 4 him and can get along with him well. He is now called a bird whisperer.
Brian pays for most of the costs of looking after the birds from his own money, but has recently set up a foundation to raise money. He and his birds 5 earn money by performing at birthday parties, weddings and other social events. For people who want to adopt Brian’s birds, they have to volunteer at the foundation for three months 6 they can take the pet home.

Before the pandemic, it was common to greet others with a hug or a shake of the hand. That’s now being 25 by some people with an elbow or fist bump (碰手肘或者拳头). In the past, men bowed-bending forward at the body and lowering the head as if to say, “I’m not all that important”. Bowing is elegant (优雅的) and unlike elbow bumps, can totally avoid 26 . So, what do you think Should bowing make a comeback
Yes, it’s a humble, graceful greeting.
Bowing provides a practical and graceful solution to the problem of how to greet one another in the midst of a pandemic. Bumping elbows might not spread coronavirus but it doesn’t have the elegance of a bow. It can be awkward not knowing how to greet someone, so a bow can sort this out. It means that people know 27 what to do without colliding(碰撞) somewhere between a hug and a handshake. A bow is a gesture of humility(谦逊), which is a sign of strength.
The Victorian writer, Charles Spurgeon, wrote that the humility of a bow leads to feeling invincible(无敌的). 28 , in these serious times, it could be fun pretending to be in a novel by a Victorian writer.
No, it’s 29 to greet people in this way.
Physical touch reduces anxiety, stress and even pain. The pandemic has highlighted(突出) how much people want to hug their friends and family. Can you imagine bowing to a grandmother In the past, bowing was common in the UK when people at the 30 —such as royalty(皇室) and the rich—were considered more important than those lower down—such as children and the working classes. Society should not go back to a way of doing things that highlights inequality between groups. There are better ways to greet, such as the Southeast Asian way of saying “Namaste(合十礼)”, with palms together, pointing upwards in gratitude.

But many of them 55 in the rubbish bins, some even untouched. Unlike others, they wondered why the kids didn’t want the fruit.
They thought the fact that the apples were being served whole, rather than sliced (切成片的), made the fruit out of favor. And they wanted to 56 this idea.
They carried out a study at eight schools and found that fruit consumption(消耗) 57 by more than 60 percent when apples were served sliced. It’s one of those situations where what seems like a really small inconvenience actually makes a huge difference.

Is living on the planet Mars possible for humans The answer is yes. Some scientists believe people will live on the planet Mars by 2200. Our own planet, Earth, will become more and more crowded and 19 . We won’t have enough space to live and there won’t be any fresh air or water. Good news is that we can start again and build a better world on Mars. Here is what life could be like.
First of all, 20 should be much better. At present, our spaceships are too slow to carry large numbers of people to Mars — it takes months. However, by 2200, spaceships can travel at half the speed of light. It might take us two or three days to get to Mars!
Secondly, humans need food, water and air to live on. Scientists should be able to develop plants that can be grown on Mars. These plants will produce the food and air that we need. 21 , will there be enough fresh water for all of us There is no answer now.
There is a problem for us to live on Mars. Mars pulls us much less than the Earth does. This will be dangerous because we can easily jump too high and fly slowly away into space. To prevent this, humans on Mars have to wear special shoes to make themselves 22 .
Life on Mars will be better than that on Earth in many ways. People will have more space. Living in a large building with only 10 bedrooms is highly possible. People will have more 23 . With the development of science and technology, robots will do most of our work, so we can take up our hobbies.
In some ways, life on Mars may not be better than that on Earth today. Food will not be the same — meals will probably be in the form (形式) of pills and will not be as delicious as they are today. Also, space travel will make many people feel 24 . The spaceship will travel fast but the journey to Mars will probably be very uncomfortable.

I 50 some places which I could rent for the cheapest possible amount. I came upon a poor house four miles up a winding mountain road over the Potomac River in West Virginia. It was abandoned(被遗弃的), full of broken glass and rubbish. I found the owner, rented it, and cleared a country to camp in. The locals knew nothing about me, but 51 , they started teaching me the art of being a neighbor. They dropped off blankets, candles, and tools, and began 52 around to chat. They started to teach me a belief in a different American Dream—not the one person but the neighbor’s friendship. What I have believed in, all those things I thought were not 53 in this place. Up on the mountain, my most valuable things were my relationship with my neighbors. Four years later, I moved back into town. I saw many people having a really hard time, losing their jobs and homes. I managed to rent a big enough house to take in a handful of people. There are four of us now in the house, but over time I’ve had nine people come in and move on to other places. We would all be in 54 if we didn’t stay together. Now the American Dream I believe in is a shared one. It’s not so much about what I can get for myself: it’s about how we can all get by together.

Three years ago, a group of researchers at Cornell University’s Food and Brand Lab had a guess. They knew that as part of the National School Lunch Program, apples were served to kids.
They then made a followup study at six other schools, which not only showed the same result, but further 58 it. Both the overall apple consumption and the percentage of students who ate more than half of the apple served to them were more than 70 percent higher at schools that served sliced apples.
Based on these results, it seems that even the simplest forms of inconvenience can influence us. Sliced apples did reduce the waste. However, the hardest part is getting kids to 59 eating fruit, and that’s exactly why sliced apples are the way to go. A child holding a whole apple has to break the skin, eat around the core (果核), and 60 the inconvenience of holding a large fruit. These problems might seem silly or unimportant, but they’re important when you’re missing teeth or have braces (牙箍), as so many kids do.
It’s one of those situations where what seems like a really small inconvenience actually makes a huge difference.
