Living on the ISS
Hello everyone, my name is Jessica Meir. I am an astronaut. I work on the International Space Station(国际空间站,缩写为ISS) as a flight engineer. Today, I will tell you something about what life is like on the ISS.
The ISS has over 425 cubic meters(立方米) of living space. I work here with astronauts from the United States, Russia, Japan, Canada and several other European countries. When we are on the ISS, we have to follow a detailed daily schedule. It tells us when to get up, eat, exercise, work, relax and go to sleep. We spend about two hours each day exercising. Without regular exercise, we would lose a certain amount of muscle and bone due to the microgravity (微重力) environment in space.
The food we eat is specifically designed for space missions. Some foods, such as cakes, can be eaten in space just the way they are eaten on the Earth. But some other foods are real challenges. For example, when you’re in space, you can’t shake salt onto food, because the salt would float away. As a result, we have to use special liquid salt.
When we are not busy doing experiments on the ISS, we can relax and have fun in a variety of ways. Like most of you, we listen to music, read books, play cards, watch movies and talk with our family members.
As you can see, the microgravity environment in space brings many challenges that don’t exist on the Earth. Would you like to live for some time on the ISS
Yours sincerely,
Jessica Meir

I was at an empty Mexican beach at sunset (日落). I could see a woman in the distance (在远处). She kept bending down (弯腰), picking something up and throwing it out into the ocean. As I got closer, I noticed that the woman was picking up starfish that were left on the beach and, one at a time, she was throwing them back into the water.
I was puzzled. I walked up to the woman and said, “Good evening. I was wondering what you are doing.”
“I’m throwing these starfish back into the sea. You see, it’s low tide (潮汐) right now and all of these starfish have been washed up onto the beach. If I don’t throw them back into the sea, they’ll die here from lack of water.”
“I understand.” I said. “but there must be thousands of starfish on this beach. You can’t possibly get to all of them. There are simply too many. And this is probably happening on hundreds of beaches all up and down this coast (海岸). Can’t you see that you can’t possibly make a difference ”

Hippopotamuses (河马) or “hippos”, live both in the water and on land. Most photographs of these large African animals show them in rivers and lakes. That’s because they spend the daytime in the water, keeping cool in the hot African sun. Hippos sleep in the water, and baby hippos are born there.
But when the sun goes down, hippos come out of the water for food. They eat grass. During the night, they can walk as far as 10 kilometers to get enough grass. An adult hippo can eat over 50 kilograms of it in one night!
Hippos are dangerous animals, both on land and in the water. They fight with lions on land, and with the crocodiles that share their rivers and lakes. Male hippos often fight each other to see which one will dominate (控制) an area of river. Female hippos will fight to protect their young.
Hippos can attack people. They may look like big, slow animals, but they can run fast—about 30 kilometers an hour. That's faster than a person can run. Hippos will also attack boats that come too close to them.

The word “photography” comes from two Greek words——“photos” and “graph”. When these two Greek words come together, they mean drawing with light.
A good photographer is a little bit like an artist(艺术家) or a writer. He or she uses photos to paint a picture or tell a story.
Like all good artists, a photographer has to make a visual(视觉的) picture that makes people feel something. If you look at a photo and feel happy or sad or if it makes you excited or even angry, then the photographer has done a good job.
And like all good writers, a photographer needs to tell a story with his or her photos. A good photo should make you think and ask questions like “What are they doing ” or “Where was that photo taken ” or “Who is that person ”
With a camera on or a smartphone out there now, it’s easier than ever to learn to be a good photographer.

(2022秋·上海浦东新·七年级上海民办华二浦东实验学校校考期中)The world is not only hungry, but also thirsty for water. This may seem strange to you, since nearly 70% of the earth’s surface is covered with water. But about 97% of this huge amount is sea water, or salt water. Man can only drink and use the other 3%—the fresh water that comes from rivers, lakes, underground and other sources (来源), and we cannot even use all of that. Even worse, some of it has been polluted.
However, as things stand today(以目前的情况来看), this small amount of fresh water is still enough for us. But our need for water is increasing quickly—almost day by day. We should take steps to deal with this problem now and in this way we can get away from a serious world—wide water shortage (短缺) later on.
We all have to learn how to stop wasting our precious water. One of the first steps we should take is to develop ways of reusing it. Today in most large cities, water is used only once and then sent out into a sewer (污水管) system. From there it returns to sea or runs into underground places.
But even if(即使) every large city reused its water, we still would not have enough. All we’d have to do to make use of sea water in the world is to take away the salt. If we take these steps, we'll be in no danger of drying up.
103.Where does the fresh water come from
104.Is our need for water becoming larger and larger or smaller and smaller
105.Our world isn’t thirsty for water, is it

Mountaineer (登山者) Wasfia Nazreen is the first person from Bangladesh (孟加拉国) in South Asia to climb the “Seven Summits” ——the highest mountain on each continent (大陆). She talks about overcoming (克服) difficulties and doing the unexpected (出乎意料的)...
“When we climbed Mount Kilimanjaro (乞力马扎罗山), the highest mountain in Africa, we brought a special kit with us—a collapsible hula-hoop(可折叠呼拉圈)! I grew up in Bangladesh. Young girls were not allowed to do many things in my country, and hula-hooping in public was one of them.
“So we decided to take the hula-hoop to the top of Kilimanjaro and to the summits of all seven continents! It was my way of getting back my right to play outdoors.
“No good thing in life comes without difficulties, and all difficulties seem scary at first. But it’s always been worth it for me to get them over. For example, while climbing Mount Everest (珠穆朗玛峰) in Nepal (尼泊尔), we were close to the top when our camp was destroyed by an avalanche (雪崩). Without our extra supplies, we were forced to return to base camp and start all over again. It was frustrating (沮丧的) at the time, but reaching the top was more meaningful because of all the extra efforts we had made.

Looking at photographs of hippos, it’s easy to think they are funny, friendly animals. But in fact. they are deadly!

Name: Wasfia Nazreen Born: 27 October 1982 Job: Mountaineer Known for: Being the first Bangladeshi to climb the highest summits in Africa, Antarctica, North America, South America, Asia, Australia and Europe Future plans: To teach young women and school girls in her country about outdoor activities
