Criticism is judgment. A critic is a judge. A judge must study and think about the material presented to him, accept it, correct it or reject it after thinking over what he has read, watched or heard.
Another word for criticism is appreciation. When I criticize or appreciate some object or another, I look for its good points and bad points. In reading any printed or written matter, I always have a pencil in hand and put any comments in the book or on a separate paper. In other words, I always talk back to the writer.
That sort of critical reading might well be called creative reading because I am thinking along with the author, asking him questions, seeing whether he answers the questions and how well he answers them. I mark the good passages to store them in my memory piece of writing; where, how and why could or should I improve upon it
You might think that doing what I suggested is work. Yes, it is, but the work is a pleasure because I can feel my brain expanding, my emotion reacting and my way of living change.
Reading exercises is a great influence on a person. If pictures, still or moving, accompany the reading, the memory will retain the material for a long time.
Just as evil books can corrupt, so also can good books gradually work a change on a corrupt person.
Let's get back to the beneficial effects of thinking while reading. It helps us to enlarge our minds. We understand more about the universe, its people and many of its wonders. We learn to think and observe in new ways. We certainly do get a feeling for the language we are reading. All good writers in any language have been readers who read critically and continuously.
4. According to the writer, creative reading is ________.
A. raising questions and answering them for the author
B. reading and giving comments on the materials one has read
C. thinking in the same line with the author
D. storing up facts in one's memory
5. The writer says a critic ________.
A. asks what he does not understand
B. talks back to the author
C. understand the background on which the works are based
D. looks for the good and bad points of the material he has read
6. By the phrase “thinking along with” in the third paragraph, the writer means________.
A. following one's thought closely B. accepting
C. considering D. agreeing
7. We can learn from the passage that all good readers ________.
A. understand more about their surrounding than others.

C. have the feeling of the language they read.
D. have read extensively(广泛地) and critically

As we all know, children are fast learners when learning a second language. However, adults can study a second language as fast as children, a new study reports. Adults can develop the increased neural (神经的)connections with language study that can avoid dementia(痴呆)by four years, as well as make traveling a lot easier.
In an examination of Spanish second-language learners, the researchers found that after simplest training, the brain activity between sentences that relied on grammatical features unique to each language was similar to that of native speakers. “I think it is the reason why people think university foreign language teaching is good. It shows that, even with limited time in the college classroom, learning can happen quite quickly and well, ”said professor Alison Gabriele, the co-author of the paper.
Beyond that, it gives parents more reasons to study a second language as part of a family effort. Further research has shown that learning a language as a family effort improves everyone’s abilities and gives opportunities for learning something that are mostly absent from classroom settings. National Geographic reports in an interview with Christine Jernigan, author of Family Language Learning: Learn Another Language that as for immersion(沉浸)in language study, practicing a second language with people is the most important part, and who talks to each other more than a family Language learners need to be brave. Besides, they should ready themselves for making mistakes and receive others’ advice.
Most people will be far more comfortable making mistakes around family members than in a classroom setting. Furthermore, any home activity, whether that’s gardening, playing in the yard, watching movies, going shopping, cleaning, or cooking a meal, becomes an opportunity for language learning. Jernigan suggests preparing vocabulary before an activity and using it as short homework. Jernigan suggests using subtitles(字幕)too, so you can see which words are being used.

As the concept of emotional intelligence (EI) has gone global, we’ve watched professionals fail as they try to improve their emotional intelligence because they either don’t know where to focus their efforts or they haven’t understood how to improve these skills on a practical level. In our work consulting with companies and coaching leaders, we have found that if you’re looking to develop particular EI strengths, it helps to consider areas for improvement others have identified along with the goals you want to achieve and then to actively build habits in those areas rather than simply relying on understanding them conceptually.
The first step is to get a sense of how your self-perception (how you see yourself) differs from your reputation (how others see you). This is especially true for the development of EI because we can be blind to how we express and read the emotional components of our interactions. For example, most of us think that we’re good listeners, but very often that’s really not the case. Without this external reality check, it will be difficult for you to identify the ways that your actions affect your performance. Getting teed back from others can also provide proof of the necessity of shifting our behavior and motivation to do so.
To give you the best sense of where the differences lie between your self-perception and reputation, you should use a 360-degree feedback assessment that takes into account the multiple aspects of EI. The key is to find one to give you feedback, which is focused on development and not on performance assessment. And that can give you a detailed understanding of how other people’s assessments of you differ from your own assessments.
Secondly, when you get your feedback from an assessment, let that inform what you want to improve. But also consider what your goals are. When it comes to cultivating strengths in emotional intelligence, you’re at a huge disadvantage if you’re only interested because others say you should be. Your emotional intelligence is so tied up in your sense of self that being intrinsically (内在的) motivated to make the effort matters more when changing longstanding habits than it does when simply learning a skill.
That means the areas that you choose to actively work on should lie at the intersection of the feedback you’ve gotten and the areas that are most important to your own aspirations (抱负). Understanding the influences of your current EI habits relative to your goals will keep you going over a long period at time as you do the work or strengthening your emotional intelligence.
12. What do we know from the first paragraph
A. EI can be better improved with others’ help.
B. Leaders are badly in need of improving their EI.
C. EI plays a key role in professional development.
D. Professionals fail to understand the concepts of EI.
13. According to the passage, which of the following is an “external reality check”
A. You help your siblings make a key decision.
B. Your career development speeds up with others’ help.
C. You reflected yourself and made a New Year resolution.
D. Your teacher directed you towards a better attitude in study.
14. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4
A. To improve your EI, following your inner call is the most reliable.
B. It’s bard for others to know your EI because it hides deep inside.
C. To improve your EI, you should take your goals into consideration.
D. Acquiring a new skill is more significant than improving your EI.
15. Which of the following might the author agree with
A. Your inner self discourages you from improving your EI.
B. Effective EI development is determined by different factors.
C. The importance of performance assessment is underestimated.
D. EI development is unlikely to happen unless you know what EI is.
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. C 15. B

【12题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“In our work consulting with companies and coaching leaders, we have found that if you’re looking to develop particular EI strengths, it helps to consider areas for improvement others have identified along with the goals you want to achieve and then to actively build habits in those areas rather than simply relying on understanding them conceptually.(在我们为公司提供咨询服务和培训领导者的工作中,我们发现,如果你想要发展特定的EI优势,考虑其他人已经确定的改进领域以及你想要实现的目标,然后积极地在这些领域培养好的习惯,而不是简单地依赖于对它们概念上的理解,会有所帮助)”可知,如果你想要发展特定的EI优势,可以考虑其他人已经确定的改进领域,可得出在别人的帮助下,情商可以得到更好的提高。故选A。
【13题详解】

This is especially true for the development of EI because we can be blind to how we express and read the emotional components of our interactions. For example, most of us think that we’re good listeners, but very often that’s really not the case.(第一步是了解你的自我认知(你如何看待自己)与你的声誉(别人如何看待你)有何不同。对于情商的发展来说尤其如此,因为我们可能对我们如何表达和理解我们互动中的情感成分视而不见。例如,我们大多数人都认为自己是好的倾听者,但事实往往并非如此)”及第二段最后一句“Getting teed back from others can also provide proof of the necessity of shifting our behavior and motivation to do so.(从别人那里得到反馈也可以证明我们改变行为的必要性和动机)”可知,“Without this external reality check, it will be difficult for you to identify the ways that your actions affect your performance.(如果没有这种external reality check,你将很难确定你的行为是如何影响你的表现的)”中划线部分external reality check(外部现实的检验)指的是他人对我们的反馈让我们真实了解自己,明白对自己的错误认知并纠正自己行为。由此推知,D选项“Your teacher directed you towards a better attitude in study.(你的老师引导你在学习上采取更好的态度)”是一种external reality check“外部现实的检验”。故选D。
【14题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段中的“Secondly, when you get your feedback from an assessment, let that inform what you want to improve. But also consider what your goals are.(其次,当你从评估中得到反馈时,让它告诉你想要改进的地方。但也要考虑你的目标是什么)”可知,第四段主要讲述了当你想要提高情商时,你应该考虑你的目标。故选C。
【15题详解】

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了虚假消息特点,我们应该谨慎对待,辨认可靠来源,区分消息真假。
【16题详解】
根据前句“Fake news spreads faster and more easily today through the internet, social media and instant messaging. (如今,假消息通过互联网、社交媒体和即时消息传播得更快、更容易。)”和后半句“which can harm the public health and add to social disorder and division.(会损害公众健康,加剧社会的混乱和分裂。)”可知,这里介绍什么是虚假消息,which 所指代内容应为虚假消息,所以选择项G“These messages may contain useless, incorrect information and advice(这些消息可能含有无用的、不正确的信息和建议)”符合上下文语境,故选G。
【17题详解】
根据前句“Some fake news also contains a mixture of correct information, which makes it difficult to spot what is true and accurate. (一些假消息还包含了正确信息的混合,这使得人们很难辨别什么是真实和准确的。)”和后句“They might not have read the full story before sharing or just glanced over it. (他们可能在分享之前没有阅读完整的故事,或者只是浏览了一下。)”可知,假消息真假难辨,所以经常被分享,后文中 they 所指代内容应为分享消息的人,所以选择项C“Fake news may also be shared by trusted friends and family (假消息也可能被信任的朋友和家人分享)”符合上下文语境,故选 C。
【18题详解】
根据后文“So, it is only natural to more readily accept information that provides comfort or easy solutions – unfortunately, often in a false way.(因此,更容易接受提供舒适或简单解决方案的信息是很自然的——不幸的是,往往是错误的方式。)”可知,这里应为人们乐意接受虚假消息的原因。所以选择项D“People will be seeking certainty in a time of high uncertainty (人们将在一个高度不确定的时期寻求确定性)”符合上下文语境,故选 D。
【19题详解】
根据后文“it is worth double-checking. Fake news will try to grab your attention by being more exaggerated than real stories. Anything written entirely in capital letters or containing a lot of exclamation marks should raise your suspicions.(就值得再次检查。假消息会试图通过比真实故事更夸张的内容来吸引你的注意力。任何完全用大写字母书写或包含大量感叹号的内容都应该引起你的怀疑。)”可知,虚假消息的特点之一是比较夸张。所以选择项A“If a story is more surprising (如果一个故事更令人惊讶)”符合上下文语境,故选 A。
【20题详解】
根据前文“The best sources for authentic information are your government websites. However, even government messaging can get things wrong.(获得真实信息的最佳来源是政府网站。然而,即使是政府的信息也可能出错。)”和后文“For instance, The Conversation is a more trusted source because all content is written by academics who are experts in their fields. Websites such as APFactCheck and Full Fact highlight common fake news stories. A search engine can be used to look up the title of the article to see if it has been identified as fake news by the mainstream media.(例如,The Conversation是一个更值得信赖的资源,因为所有的内容都是由各自领域的专家学者撰写的。APFactCheck和Full Fact等网站突出了常见的假新闻。可以使用搜索引擎查找文章的标题,看看它是否被主流媒体识别为假新闻。)”举例说明一些可靠网站可知,尽管前文提到政府网站也可能会有错误消息,但仍比一般媒体可靠。所以选择项E“But they are more trustworthy than unchecked sources on social media (但它们比社交媒体上未经核实的消息来源更值得信赖)”符合上下文语境,故选E。

Time for Americans to act on climate change
The climate crisis is worsening at a rate that is becoming harder and harder to ignore. For more than two decades, scientific reports have made it clear that global warming is real, that humans cause it and that the consequences will be disastrous.
The scientific community has become increasingly panicked over the past year. The latest assessment from the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change painted a far more terrible picture than its previous analyses, and the long-awaited National Climate Assessment made clear that climate change represents a severe threat to human health as well as our economic security. Out of this panic came the treaty(条约)reached this past weekend by world leaders to keep the Paris climate agreement alive.
Yet many Americans still don’t regard the threat as a key priority for our government, and support President Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris treaty. Campaign contributions from fossil fuel companies have convinced elected officials to look the other way. A certain amount of despair has resulted in widespread apathy(漠然).
But there is another reason that has been discussed far less openly. While a growing number of people understand that climate change will have significant worldwide consequences, many Americans have an intuitive(直觉的)belief that their nation is more capable than others of adapting to a changed environment. Why Because they have before.
This historical success, however, resulted from the federal government taking science seriously, and making investments to urge revolution and innovation.
But these innovations did not happen by themselves, or simply because of the United States’ rich resources. They depended on consistent support from the leaders about the need to take action when faced with crises. This has been especially true in the environmental crisis.
President Bill Clinton had a shockingly modest record of advancing climate security, particularly given that his vice president, Al Gore, had been one of the most outspoken environmentalists in Congress. By far Clinton’s biggest accomplishment was assigning Gore to participate n thе Куоtо Рrоtoсоl negotiations. Сl ntоn сhо е, hоwеvеr, tо аvо d whаt urеlу wоuld have been a terrible fight in the Senate to gain approval of the treaty. While this effort probably would have failed, it would have signaled to the American people how seriously the Democratic Party took climate change.
Thus, the time has clearly arrived for progressive candidates to start campaigning on a platform built around the need for a sustainability revolution. Such a plan should include a carbon tax, well-funded clean energy research, evolved agricultural policies and smarter public transport. Given that Generation X and millennials(千禧一代)never bought into the fiction that the United States is immune to the dangers of global warming, the time is ripe to make climate security a crucial government responsibility. Only by doing so can we begin the long-overdue(拖延好久的)campaign to save the planet.

B. have a thorough insight to the problem in life.
C. have the feeling of the language they read.
D. have read extensively(广泛地) and critically

8. What does the new study in Paragraph 1 find
A. Kids often travel a lot on their own.
B. Adults have learnt a second language better than kids.
C Adults can study a second language as quickly as kids.
D. Kids are likely to develop the increased neural connections.
9. What does Alison Gabriele think of learning a language in the college classroom
A. It is successful. B. It is challenging.
C. It is disappointing. D. It is boring.
10. What is the advantage of learning a language as a family effort
A. Helping kids form good learning habits.
B. Making parents control kids easily.
C. Keeping kids focusing on the classroom.
D. Having more chances to learn in different situations.
11. What should language learners do according to the text
A. Try to take others’ advice less.
