21.答案C 细节理解题。根据Kelburn Castle, Largs, Scotland部分“When viewed from some sides, Kelburn Castle looks like a typical Scottish castle. But on the building’s south side, the stone tower and walls are covered in cartoon-style graffiti. The castle’s graffiti is the work of four artists. The graffiti took 1,500 cans of paint to create.(从某些方面看,凯尔伯恩城堡就像一座典型的苏格兰城堡。但在建筑的南侧,石塔和墙壁上布满了卡通风格的涂鸦。城堡的涂鸦是四位艺术家的作品。这幅涂鸦花了1500罐油漆才完成)”可知,凯尔伯恩城堡像是一座典型的苏格兰城堡,但建筑南侧还布满了卡通风格的涂鸦,凯尔伯恩城堡最精彩的部分是它的设计。故选C。
22.答案A 细节理解题。根据Predjama Castle, Predjama. Slovenia部分“Although the site dates back to at least the 13th century, the current building was reconstructed during the 16th century.(尽管该遗址至少可以追溯到13世纪,但目前的建筑是在16世纪重建的)”以及Swallow’s Nest, Gaspra, Crimea部分“The current stone building was once a wooden structure.(现在的石头建筑曾经是木结构)”可知,Predjama Castle和Swallow’s Nest的共同之处是两座城堡都经历过重建。故选A。

答案B 词义猜测题。根据第二段中的“If you have posted a video of your favourite recipe on a popular website, chances are that it will be used by a robot.”可知,机器人能利用网上大量的视频信息。结合第二段最后一句可知,capitalise on应与“use”意思相近,因此应选择B项。take hold of“握住”;make use of“利用”;keep track of“与……

This time I would not hide my desire anymore. Determined to follow my heart, I explained to my father how I felt. I told him that I wanted to go to college to learn to fly instead of being a farmer. After saying this, I waited nervously for his reaction. To my surprise, he approved of my request, and he told me he was moved by my perseverance. With his support and my efforts, I was admitted into my ideal college.
At the graduation ceremony, with my father present, I as “Best Pilot” had to deliver a speech. In my speech, I shared with the audience my story about how a teenager realized his dream. Faced with difficulties, I took a path that led me do something that needed passion, training and practice. I also owed my success to my father’s support. Without his understanding, I couldn’t have pursued my dream. At the end of my speech, I spotted my father’s watery eyes, and said, “Dad, I made it!” His face lit up with pride.长春博硕学校2023—2024学年度上学期

Unusual Castles Around the World
Whether a fantastic achievement of architecture or just a try to appeal to the public intentionally, the four curious castles below are far from ordinary.
Kelburn Castle, Largs, Scotland
When viewed from some sides, Kelburn Castle looks like a typical Scottish castle. But on the building’s south side, the stone tower and walls are covered in cartoon-style graffiti (涂鸦). The castle’s graffiti is the work of four artists. The graffiti took 1,500 cans of paint to create.
Predjama Castle, Predjama, Slovenia
Predjama Castle was built directly into the mouth of a cave located halfway up a little over 123-meter cliff (悬崖) face. Although the site dates back to at least the 13th century, the current building was reconstructed during the 16th century. The impressive castle holds the Guinness World Records for the largest cave castle in the world.
Swallow’s Nest, Gaspra, Crimea
It’s common for castles to be built near the edge of a cliff, but few look so unsafe as the Swallow’s Nest in Crimea, which extends out over the Black Sea. The foundation of this small castle, which measures 20 meters in length and 10 meters in width, extends beyond the edge of the 40-meter cliff. The current stone building was once a wooden structure.
Trosky Castle, Troskovice, Czech Republic
On the top of two volcanic mouths is Trosky Castle, which dates back to the end of the 14th century. Along with the towers on each peak, the castle is also built on the ridge (山脊) that connects the peaks. After a defensive stronghold during war time, the castle was abandoned. The government took control of the site in 1925 and the remains of its walls are now carefully maintained.
What highlights Kelburn Castle
Its history. B. Its location. C. Its design. D. Its function.

On February 21, 2021, Jasmine Harrison became the youngest woman to row(划船) alone across an ocean. It took the 21 year old swimming teacher just over 70 days to row across the Atlantic Ocean.
Ms Harrison, who's from North Yorkshire, England, didn’t have loads of experience in rowing long distances. She'd only gotten the idea three years earlier when she happened to be in Antigua and saw the end of the 2017 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge(TWAC). “I just thought, I want to do this, so I'm going to do it,” she said.
Every year, rowers taking part in the Atlantic Campaign set off from the Canary Islands in December and row roughly 4,828 kilometers across the Atlantic. Every day, Ms Harrison would row for about 12 hours, pushing her 250 kilogram boat across the ocean. On average, she rowed about 20,000 strokes a day.
Ms Harrison had a satellite phone that allowed her to talk with family and friends every day. But the journey still left her with much time all by herself, which she says she enjoyed. But things got harder after her speaker fell in the water and she could no longer listen to her favorite songs.
Along the way she saw lots of sea life, including several mild whales. One even rose out of the ocean right next to her boat. For several days, she was followed by a small group of dolphins. “I'm in their environment,” she said. “It's just amazing.” But there was danger, too. Twice, her boat was turned over in the night by large waves. “Everything happened when I was asleep,” she said.
Somehow, Ms Harrison kept going. On February 20, after 70 days, 3 hours and 48 minutes, she reached the island of Antigua—the end of the journey. Her trip didn't just set a record, it also raised over£18,500 for two charities: Blue Marine Foundation, which works to control overfishing, and ShelterBox, which helps people who have suffered from natural disasters.
What made Ms Harrison decide to join in the Atlantic Campaign
Her watching TWAC.
Her participation in the 2017 event.
Her family's encouragement.
Her desire to make achievements.
What challenge did Ms Harrison meet according to the text
Dangerous sea animals.
Loss of her phone.
Hunger and tiredness.
Strong waves.
How far did Ms Harrison cover every day on average
About 59 kilometers.
About 69 kilometers.
About 79 kilometers.
About 89 kilometers.
What can we know about Ms Harrison
She is experienced in rowing.
She is a well known swimmer.
She set a record in the campaign.
She has got many rewards so far.

Robots performing tasks according to a predetermined set of instructions are nothing new. But robots able to learn how to cook by watching videos are a completely different approach, which is conducted by a group of researchers at the University of Maryland.
If you have posted a video of your favourite recipe on a popular website, chances are that it will be used by a robot. University of Maryland's professor Yiannis Aloimonos, leader of the group, said, “There exists a large amount of video information on the Internet that our robots can capitalise on. ”
“At present, the videos are fed electronically,” said research scientist Cornelia Fermuller. “Originally, we took our own videos, our cameras looking at us doing the cooking,” she explained. “And, as the robot advances, it reacts to good quality videos. And it will react to even lower quality home made videos.”
So far, the robot named Julia can make a simple salad by breaking each task into basic parts, such as grasping a spoon, bringing it to the bowl, stirring the salad and observing the results.
But why teach a robot how to understand a video when it can easily follow a fixed programme Aloimonos believes predetermined instructions lack flexibility. He thinks one of the problems is how to make the robot understand and use what it learns during a certain task, the so called feedback (反馈意见); another is the introduction of language.
“I believe it will take quite some time before the robots are able to understand metaphorical (比喻性的) language, ” he added. “But we don't need that to create a new world where the robots will be working for us.”
Which phrase can probably replace the underlined phrase “capitalise on” in Paragraph 2
A. take hold of B. make use of
C. keep track of D. catch sight of
What does Aloimonos probably agree
A. At present, the robot cannot fully digest what it learns.
B. At present, the robot cannot make a simple salad.
C. At present, the robot can follow home made videos.
D. At present, the robot can understand metaphorical language.
What is the best title for the text
A. Robots Creating a New World
B. Robots Making Cooking Videos
C. Robots Learning to Cook by Watching Videos
D. Robots Performing Tasks by Following Instructions
31. What is the writer’s attitude towards the robots mentioned in the passage
A. unclear B. supportive C. enthusiastic D. opposed
D
It’s unlikely that you come home from a trip and stand on top of your bed still wearing your street shoes. For some travellers, putting their suitcase on their bed is just as disgusting (令人反感的). The wheels of our luggage paced the same soiled path as our shoes, rolling through airport bathrooms, sidewalks and public transportation.
While it might sound terrible to put a worldly bag on your bed, is it actually harmful to your health According to Phyllis Kozarsky, an expert travel health consultant, most public health professionals don’t consider luggage a major transmitter (传播者) of disease.
“We have not identified outbreaks related to dirty luggage,” Kozarsky says. Travellers may benefit from cleaning their luggage if they suspect that their hotel rooms are overrun with bedbugs. “Then they certainly would benefit by cleaning it after they returned home,” Kozarsky says.
Even if your luggage touching your bed won’t hurt you, you might still be disgusted. After all, travel is an experience full of bacteria. “You have people... carrying all types of different bacteria. Some of them are sick, and you now have them populating these public travel places,” says Colleen Costello, CEO of Vital Vio, a company that makes antibacterial LED lights. Your fellow travellers have to touch all the same things you have to touch, from the TSA checkpoint to the airplane, the train ticketing machine to the handrail in your train car.
For peace of mind, Costello recommends giving your bag a quick disinfection or storing it on a luggage shelf. Of course, you could go beyond disinfecting your luggage wheels and clean thoroughly the rest of your travel experience—the airplane tray table, hotel room door and remote control.
But Kozarsky doesn’t guarantee that lifestyle. “It’s hard to keep up with every doorhandle, every railing,” Kozarsky says. “You can become a little neurotic (神经质的) that way.”
What’s the function of the first paragraph
To predict the conclusion.
To present the argument.
To introduce the topic.
To describe the phenomenon.
What does Kozarsky convey by explaining the luggage-cleaning case
Luggage touching your bed won’t hurt you.
Luggage spreads disease through your bed.
It’s a must to clean your luggage after travelling.
Travellers should be careful of on-way dangers.
How does Costello support his opinion
By giving examples.
By stating facts.
By making comparisons.
By listing figures.
What does Kozarsky think of Costello’s suggestion
It has gone too far.
It’s absolutely worthless.
It sounds somewhat reasonable.
It’s worth taking into consideration.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
How to Become a Scientist
Be curious.
Scientists choose to become scientists because they are curious about the world around them and how the things in it work. This curiosity leads them to investigate the how and why behind what they see.
Be patient in climbing the career ladder.
36 There are very few careers that take longer than this one. Even when you’re doing with your education, you still have to get research under your belt. If you’re an instant-gratification (即时满足) type of person, this may not be the right career for you.
Be hard-working and persevere.
It’s been said that jobs in science are the lowest paid in the US. What this is getting at is that because of the long path to success, for a while you won’t be living lavishly(丰富地). 37 Have the need to always keep learning. 38 Whether it’s reading peer-reviewed journals, attending seminars, or working toward getting yourself published, you’ll always be learning.
39
In those years of waiting for results, you need to constantly be looking for the smallest changes in what you expect to see. Your eye needs to be focused and ready at all times.
Think differently.
Think back to Newton’s apple falling on his head or Archimedes jumping into his tub and displacing water. Most people would think nothing of these events, but these men saw something else, something no one else was seeing at the time. 40
Observation skills are also necessary. Becoming a scientist takes a long time. Things are going to be tough for a while. Then you’re probably made of the right stuff. As the saying goes, “Where there is a will, there is a way.” Actually what every scientist does is seek out knowledge. To make progress in human knowledge, you have to think differently.

One day, my 12-year-old daughter participated in a school poetry reading event. All her classmates were invited to write a “lie poem” about how 41 they were and read them aloud. They were supposed to 42 untruths about themselves that made them sound 43 wonderful. As I listened to the poems, I realized that the children were actually 44 the picture of their future. By “lying” to themselves, they were creating a 45 of who they wanted to be in the future.
I couldn’t help admiring the school for 46 the children to dream big in such a special way, even if it might not be the first intention. In fact, most of us are 47 to see the truth of who we could be. My daughter’s school developed an unintended 48 to that difficulty: If it’s hard for you to imagine the 49 in yourself, then you might want to begin by expressing it as a 50 , as did the children who wrote the poems.
Think up some stories about who you would like to be. In due course, this 51 exercise would help you build the necessary blueprint for 52 your achievements. Without a picture of your 53 self, you can’t live into that self. So 54 it till you make it. The lie will become the 55 in the end.

My great-grandfather, my grandfather and my father were farmers. My father had a fixed idea that I would become a farmer too. Although I respected him and was indeed skilled at doing some farm work, I didn’t agree that I should automatically follow in my father’s footsteps.
When I was a teenager, my father happened to take me to an airport which belonged to one of his friends. It was the first time I had seen an aeroplane in real life. Knowing that I had never been on board, my father’s friend Tom offered me an opportunity to fly with him in his small aeroplane. I quickly accepted his offer! When we took off, I felt nervous but thrilled. Being up in the clouds and looking at the view below was unlike anything I had ever felt. I was just enjoying it. I assumed being a pilot would be the most awesome thing in the whole world. From that day a thought crept into my mind that I wanted to become a pilot, but I doubted whether my father would support me. After all, it was a totally different path from what he had planned for me. Therefore, I put the thought to the back of my mind, because I knew he would still insist on holding onto his previous idea.
Anyway, besides helping my father on the farm, I would frequently visit Tom’s airport. Gradually, I got familiar with every button and switch on the aircraft and I learned a lot about planes, such as how to fill the plane with fuel, how to check the engines and so on. But what I had learned just left me wanting more, so I decided to go to college to become a professional pilot.
