The Princess continued, “Mr. Bear, you can drink and eat, but you won’t feel good because you have never made any contribution to anyone else. I think you’ll find that it is better to be full in your heart, not just in your stomach.” After saying this, the Princess went back to the castle, leaving Broo alone.
One day, Broo was going to take lots of cookies from the rabbits, then he remembered what the Princess said to him. So Broo decided not to eat the cookies. The rabbits were surprised and said, “Thank you for your kindness, Mr. Bear. Now these cookies will taste sweeter because they are given by you, my friend. If you like, come back tomorrow and we can have the cookies together.”

Generally speaking, American food is not very thick in taste. Salads are much liked and are served all year round. Many Americans are trying to keep down their weight. This is shown in menus offering “low calorie(卡路里)” or “weight watchers” meals. In markets, one can find “No Cal” drinks (meaning without calories) such as cola.
Many Americans drink coffee or tea with their meal. If a waiter in an American restaurant asks “Now or later ”, what he means is “Do you want coffee with your meal or later ” When eating out in the USA, we can ask for tea, milk, beer, and so on, if we prefer these to coffee. American restaurants cannot serve beer, wine, or liquor unless they are licensed to do so.
The main dish in American meals is usually meat, chicken or fish, but more than one of these is hardly served at the same meal.
Most Americans eat quickly during the day—that is, breakfast and lunch—unless it is a social, business, or family situation. The evening meal, however, is usually a family time. Racing through daytime meals is part of the “American pace” of life, for working hours are considered important.
The nationwide fast-food restaurants are suitable for the ways of American eating. The standard(标准的) products, of nearly the same price, are served quickly, and taste the same whether bought in New York City or in Los Angeles.
McDonald’s is a popular restaurant. It offers many choices of hamburgers, French fries and “cokes”. These foods are rich in fats, sugar and salt. Often, they are the major meal of the day of many young working people.

What's this If you're looking at this tree in the shape of a butterfly, it's a topiary. A topiary is a tree or bush that is trained into a shape.
A topiary gardener should make a drawing first. The drawing shows the "final shape that the gardener likes. The gardener then chooses a bush for the topiary. It may be one that just planted or one that is already in place.
In June of the plant's first year, the gardener looks for new leaves. When the leaves grow, it's time to shape the bottom of the bush. It needs about five years. The top is not trimmed during this time. In the fifth year, the bush grows tall enough for shaping. Then the gardener begins to shape the whole bush.
Once a topiary has been started, it needs care all year. In summer it must be cut many times to keep its shape. This cutting also helps the bush grow. In winter the bushes don't grow. The gardeners have to brush snow off the plants, or snow may hurt some parts of them.

Last fall a beaver(海狸) moved into the small stream(小溪;溪流) beside our house. He began taking down small trees right away, and in a couple of weeks our stream turned into a pond(水塘). Every day, he added more to his dam(水坝) and to his house. We're sure you've all heard the saying, “as busy as a beaver”. Now, we understand this saying as we saw the work that this beaver did over a very short period(时期) of time.
We thought that would be the last of the beaver's busy activity as winter came. To our amazement, however, he started chewing(咀嚼) on a very large tree. The tree was over 18 metres tall and around 1.5 metres in diameter(直径). We were amazed at the challenge(挑战) this beaver was trying. All winter, he chewed and chewed. He had setbacks(挫折) as we faced major winter storms and ice cold weather. But sure enough, when the weather allowed, he would come back and chew a bit more.
The beaver's first goal(目标) was to survive(生存)—to build home for the winter. Working every day with that goal in mind, he successfully achieved that goal. But the large tree he started chewing on last fall was a future goal—he wanted the large tree to provide new food and branches(树枝) for the coming spring. Even with the setbacks he faced over the winter, he never gave up until he reached it.
Our beaver's experience reminds us that we need to set goals for tomorrow. Sometimes just surviving seems to take up all of our time. But, if you do just a little bit when time allows and stick to your future goal, you will achieve it.
When faced with setbacks, have your goal in heart and don't let the setbacks stop you. Keep chewing like the beaver, and you will achieve(实现;获得) your goal in the end.
39.What is the purpose of the beaver's chewing on the large tree
A.To provide more food for the winter because of the snow.
B.To add more branches to his dam and his house.
C.To prepare new food and branches for the coming spring.
D.To keep working every day with a goal in mind.
40.Here is a paragraph(段)“When spring arrived, we went down to see the beaver's progress. The tree was about to fall. Our beaver had almost completely chewed around and through the whole tree.” According to the passage, it should be put ________.
A.between Paragraph 1 and Paragraph 2
B.between Paragraph 2 and Paragraph 3
C.between Paragraph 3 and Paragraph 4
D.between Paragraph 4 and Paragraph 5
41.The best title of this passage might be________.

42.The beaver's experience reminds us that ________.

B.we have to get up early in the morning

D.everybody will achieve his goal
43.When faced with setbacks, ________.

Who is the greatest teacher in Chinese history Many people would say: Confucius(孔子). September 28 is his birthday. He was born over 2,000 years ago, but people still remember him on this day.
Confucius lived in the kingdom of Lu, part of today's Shandong Province. He lived during the Spring and Autumn Period. His childhood was sad. His father died when he was only 3 and he had to work to help his mother. But young Confucius didn't give up studying. He visited many famous teachers and learned music, history, poetry and sports.
Later, he became a teacher and started the first public school in Chinese history. At that time only children from rich families could go to school, but Confucius believed everyone should go to school if they wanted to learn. He had about 3,000 students in his lifetime.
Today, people still follow Confucius' lessons. He told us that everyone has something worthy to learn and to teach. "When I am with three people, one of them must be better than me in some areas. I select their good qualities and follow them. I take their bad qualities and change them in myself." He also taught us, "All study but no thinking makes people puzzled(困惑的). All thinking but no study makes people lazy."

A story tells about an elder villager who led other villagers carrying salt day and night to a town in order to buy food for the winter. One night they camped in an open air with a starry sky above. The elder villager, following the tradition passed down from ancestors, took out three blocks(块) of salt and threw them into the campfire to tell the change of weather in the mountains.
All people waited for the old man's "weather report": if the salt in the fire produced crackling sound(爆裂声), they would have good weather; if no sound was produced, it then meant the good weather would soon end and a storm would come at any moment.
The elder villager looked serious. The salt in the campfire made no sound at all. He urged the whole team to set out immediately. A young man in the group thought it absurdly(荒谬地)superstitious(迷信的) to "forecast the weather by using salt".
It was not until the next afternoon, the weather suddenly changed, with cold winds blowing and a snowstorm coming. In fact, the method used by the elder man could be well explained by modern science: whether or not salt produces sound in campfire depends on air humidity(湿度).That is to say, when a snowstorm approaches, lead to high humidity, the salt blocks will not produce any sound in fire.
Young people often don’t mind the philosophy(哲学) of the old, regarding their ideas as out date and useless. To be honest, however, some beliefs in life are just like salt blocks that are distilled(蒸馏) from the sea: old as they are, they remain crystals(结晶), and carry with them deep memories of the sea.
