【原文】M: My father was very proud that I’d been to university—the first in my family to do so, and he hoped I would become a banker or a lawyer. But I started my business when I saw a chance to make money from sports shoes in the early 1980s. The business kept growing, I had 120 shops in 1990, and just before I sold the business in 1998, the figure had grown to 250. I made 268 million from the sale, I thought I had made all the money I would need, I decided to enjoy myself, I spent lots of money on race cars and beautiful houses but after a while , I was bored and wanted to work again, I visited Africa for the first time in 2002 and saw I could offer business advice to farmers who were in difficulty. About five years ago, I started lending small amounts of money to famer and other people all over the world who had nothing but wanted to start their own business. Recently, I’ve been taking part in some projects. We’ve been able to build new schools and set up training programs that teach children about business. The first of these projects to be completed was a hospital in a small town in Malawi this spring.

She even called Mr. Palmer, but he didn’t answer. “What did that old man do with my kids ” She was shaking with anxiety, and all the horrible rumors about Mr. Palmer were running through her mind. She was about to call the police when her phone suddenly rang.

Welcome to Simon’s Rock Writing Workshop
About it
In 1983, Simon’s Rock of Bard College began offering a three-week writing workshop for high school students. It is now part of the National Writing and Thinking Network, the largest association of summer writing programs and camps in the country. Former participants have gone on to colleges like Amherst, Harvard, Kenyon, Princeton and Yale.
About its staff
The staff are skilled teachers and writers with a special interest in the theory and practice of the nationally recognized Bard College Institute for Writing and Thinking. They are selected for the Simon’s Rock workshop camp because of their record of teaching excellence and their familiarity with the needs and abilities of younger writers.

Unlike conventional workshops in creative writing, it focuses on using informal, playful and expressive writing as a way to strengthen skills of language and thinking. Out of these informal writing activities, using techniques of peer response, students develop more polished pieces, ranging from personal descriptions to stories and poems. Each weekday consists of three ninety-minute sessions organized as writing and discussion seminars. Workshop leaders write with their students, and there is frequent sharing of this informal writing, both in small groups and in the class as a whole.

“Should I go I do have a lot of work to do.” The question came from my daughter, Tracy, a college senior, who was debating whether or not to go with her roommates on a Saturday to drive to the beach and enjoy some unseasonably warm March weather.
On the one hand, sand, sunshine, and perhaps some fried food were prizes she deserved after a hard-won year of college life; on the other hand, her thesis (论文) conclusion wasn’t going to write itself. As a rather type A student, Tracy was unsure if she should go, and had asked my opinion.
As I read her text, I remembered my own college road trips in the 80s. At that time, four of us theater students, anxious and disappointed about the posting of a cast list, had driven out to the countryside through apple orchards (果园). We stopped at the side of the road to climb over a stone wall to grab some apples from a tree, taking off laughing, and ending the trip with ice-creams. I still remember sitting at a picnic table with the kind of laughter that you hope will never end.
I texted my daughter back, “Take the day off and go to the beach. The thesis can wait.” Actually, I wanted to text her much more than that. I wanted to tell her that college is for so many things—academic and personal growth and challenges, all-night study sessions, paper deadlines, and office hours. But it’s also for road trips with your roommates and a chance to extricate every bit of stress and responsibility for a few hours.
College is for the memories that you don’t think are anything special right now. But someday, one of you will say, “Hey, remember that time on the beach ” And those precious memories are worth more than any thesis conclusion ever could be.
24. Why did Tracy hesitate to go to the beach
A. She was kind of stay-at-home. B. She had to complete her paper.
C. She worried about the weather. D. She didn’t invite her roommates.
25. What made the author and his classmates decide to take a road trip at college
A. Their demand for spiritual relief.
B. Their desire to test their new car.
C. Their need to experience country life.
D. Their plan for seeking play materials.
26. What does the underlined word “extricate” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Take on. B. Think of. C. Go through. D. Shake off.
27. What does the author want to convey in the text
A. Good friends always make life happier.
B. Stress from college life can play its part.
C. College memories are more than academic achievements.
D. Academic achievements absolutely come first at college.
C
Research has shown that listening to music while showering, taking a walk or travelling to school could affect your ability to think outside the box and come up with artistic or creative things to do. Experts say being bored can lead to daydreaming plus the birth of new ideas.
While there is nothing wrong with listening to music, doing so when taking a shower or going for a walk takes away time that could be spent thinking about yourself and your life—the perfect time to let your creative juices flow. Happiness expert Gretchen Rubin said, “You need this open-searching time in order for new ideas to spring up. This is why people get ideas in the shower or in the middle of the night—it’s a period of time when the brain creates its own fun. It’s when I’m bored that I have big insights because my brain is open and trying to entertain itself.”
A recent study by psychologists showed the same process at work. In the research, two groups of people were expected to come up with proposals. They were then asked to complete the task in two backgrounds. One is in a quiet room while the other is with music playing. Researchers found, compared to participants who completed tasks in a quiet background, participants who listened to music performed less creatively.
So, is it best to throw away the bath-time tunes Most people said the research was a real mood killer. One said, “Sometimes, I need the music to cover all the thoughts I don’t want to think.” Another commented, “Many people have too much going on in their heads. That’s why they listen to music in the shower, by which they can actually relax.” But other listeners said they liked having quiet time while travelling home at the end of the day.
In any case, striking a good balance and listening to music sometimes but being quiet at other times could be the best balance in our life.
28. What do the experts find according to the first paragraph
A. Keeping our minds busy brings in new ideas.
B. Listening to music helps to bring inspiration.
C. Taking a walk keeps us from daydreaming.
D. Feeling bored tends to stir up our creativity.
29. How does the psychologists do the research
A. By observing through daily life.
B. By referring to former reports.
C. By carrying out an experiment.
D. By filling up a questionnaire.
30. How do most people find the result of the research
A. Unacceptable. B. Misleading. C. Confusing. D. Convincing.
31. What is the best title for the text
A. Does your playlist really appeal to you
B. Is it time to throw away your playlist
C. Listening to music keeps us mentally fit
D. Being quiet is always a good habit for us

The drone (无人机) is flying above the Amazon River in Brazil, but its battery is running low. Andre Coelho, the chief pilot, guides it back to safety with skills perfected by playing video games. Long hours’ practicing has become a surprising benefit in an effort to conserve dolphins that live in the river. Marcelo Oliveira, a conservation specialist, stands on the bow of a boat. He pulls the white drone from the air, changes the battery, and quickly sends it back in the sky.
Later, scientists will examine the video which has recorded for signs of the two species of dolphins that inhabit the river: the pink and bulbous boto (亚马孙河豚), and the smaller, prettier tucuxi (白海豚). Exactly how many live in the basin is a mystery. Some studies have suggested a decline of the pink dolphins in specific areas of the Amazon River, but the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) says there isn’t enough data available for either species of dolphins.
“We need to base everything on hard data,” says Miriam Marmontel, a scientist. “We need to focus on what’s really critical to help us get to a real situation that can influence policy. We need numbers. We need information on death and reproduction.”
Marmontel’s biggest concern is that dolphins are being caught in the nets of local fishermen. Scientists have also given a warning against fishermen’s killing botos. Pollution from gold mining is also a concern.
The scientists want to use the information they collect to persuade the IUCN to list the boto and the tucuxi as endangered species. Funding agencies and governments want evidence. Without the IUCN’s categorization, it’s difficult to raise the money for protection measures.
They hope their drone monitoring will do the trick. During three trips to the Amazon last year, the team has recorded about 70 samples (样本) that will contribute to a more accurate estimate of dolphin populations in the Amazon basin.
32. What are Coelho and Oliveira doing in the Amazon River
A. Playing a video game.
B. Recording the video of the flowing river.
C. Testing the drone they designed for fun.
D. Collecting data on dolphins with a drone.
33. What can make Miriam Marmontel worry most according to the text
A. The fishermen’s living conditions. B. The money for protection measures.
C.The pollution from the gold mining. D. The dolphins being caught by fishermen.
34. What is the purpose of the drone monitoring
A. To raise money to protect the Amazon basin.
B. To find evidence for the need to take measures.
C. To urge governments to record Amazon species.
D. To get an exact number of species in the Amazon.
35. What is the author's attitude to the drone monitoring in the text
A. Worried. B. Approving. C. Unfavorable. D. Unclear.

Molly was a single mother of two. She was new here so she didn’t interact much with her neighbors. However, she’d heard a lot of rumors (谣言) about her 82-year-old neighbor, Mr. Palmer. Some neighbors said he was spiritually sick. However, when she first saw Mr. Palmer, she did feel he was strange with his lonely lifestyle.
One day, Molly ran into Mr. Palmer. He was standing by a signal light and glancing around even after the light went green. Molly realized he needed help to cross the street, so she approached him. “Mr. Palmer. I’m Molly. I’ve only lately moved here. Can I help you ” she asked gently. The old man smiled at her. “Oh, Molly! Yes! Would you mind helping me cross the street ” “Of course not, Mr. Palmer,” she smiled. As they reached the other end of the street, Mr. Palmer thanked her over and over again. After that, Molly realized he wasn’t a strange man but just a lonely soul misjudged by everyone.
Days later, Molly got a new job and was just on a trial period, so she was too busy to babysit her kids, Ben aged 6, who had got epilepsy (癫痫) and Adam aged 4, when she was sometimes on the night shift.
One day, when she was returning home, she noticed Mr. Palmer sitting on a resting chair on his doorway. She stopped by and greeted him. During the chat, Mr. Palmer said he suffered from insomnia (失眠症), and only slept late in the morning for 5 to 6 hours at a time. Molly figured she could ask Mr. Palmer for help to babysit her kids while she was on her night shifts. When she asked him about it, he was happy to help.
When Mr. Palmer arrived at Molly’s house to babysit the kids, they got along well with him. Molly was relieved to see her children happy around Mr. Palmer each time and thought her kids were in safe hands while she left for work.
