Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each pf them there are four choices marked A,B,C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
(A)
When I was 18, I had a motorbike accident that put me in a coma for three months. The doctors said there was little chance of my coming out of it, but my identical twin, Marcus, didn’t believe them and carried on talking to me. My first words when I came to myself were, "Hello, Marcus."Even though I had no memory of my own name, or that the woman crying at my bedside was my mother, I knew Marcus immediately; it was like a genetic (遗传的) memory. I just felt close to him.
As weeks went by, I still could remember nothing before the accident. Marcus was the only person I could relate to.
I had to relearn everything, and Marcus helped me. Because of my twin I wasn’t scared of having lost my memory; I believed everything he said. He became my memory, telling me about my school, friends, previous girlfriends and holidays, showing me family photographs, and telling me how perfect I was.
With his encouragement I slowly recovered and tried to become the person everyone around me loved. Then years later, when my memories flooded back, I learned that I was anything but perfect —I was troublesome, selfish, and now very angry with Marcus for having lied to me.
But finally I understood. Out of love, Marcus had chosen not to tell me about my dark side. He wanted me to have a fresh start —and in fact I had one. Thanks to him, I was able to get married and have kids. I’m 46 now, and feel as if I’m in the third stage of my life. I know all there is to know, and wouldn’t want it any other way.
91. Which of the following words best describes Marcus?
A. Dishonest. B. Thoughtful. C. Careful. D. Strict.
92. According to the passage, the author _______.
A. felt very close to Marcus when he first woke up
B. didn’t get his memories back until months later
C. had been very popular before the accident
D. remembered nothing but his own name when he first woke up
93. What was the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To tell us the importance of being honest.
B. To explain the meaning of success.
C. To express his gratitude to his twin.
D. To show how he had suffered.
94. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. My Twin Rewrote My Childhood B. An Accident Destroyed My Life
C. Family Will Always Be with You D. Friends Share Everything
(B)
The number of people living alone has skyrocketed (猛涨). What is driving the phenomenon?
Human societies, at all times and places, have organized themselves in groups —but not any more.
Numbers never tell the whole story, but in this case they are shocking. According to the market-research firm Euromonitor International, the number of people living alone rose from about 153 million in 1996 to 277 million in 2011 —a 55% increase in 15 years. Contemporary solo dwellers (独居的人) in the US are primarily women: about 18 million, compared with 14 million men. The majority, more than 16 million, are middle-aged adults between the ages of 35 and 64. The elderly account for about 11 million of the total. Solitary (独居的) young adults between 18 and 34 account for more than 5 million, compared with 500,000 in 1950, making them the fastest-growing part of this population. Sweden has more solo dwellers than anywhere else in the world, with 47% of households having only one resident, followed by Norway at 40%.
So what is driving this?
One reason that more people live alone is that they can afford to. Yet there are a great many things that we can afford to do but choose not to, which means the economic explanation is just one piece of the puzzle.
The cultural change that Emile Durkheim called the cult (崇拜) of the individual may also be a reason, and seems now to have gone far beyond what Durkheim expected.
Another driving force is surely the communications revolution, which has allowed people to experience the pleasures of social life even when they’re living alone.
Living alone is often thought to be environmentally unsustainable, but solos tend to live in apartments rather than in big houses, and in relatively green cities rather than in car-dependent suburbs. There’s good reason to believe that people who live alone in cities consume less energy than they would if they coupled up and decamped (移居) to a single-family home.
Finally, it’s too early to say how any particular society will respond to either the problems or the opportunities created by this extraordinary social transformation. After all, our experiment with living alone is still in its earliest stages, and we are just beginning to understand how it affects our own lives, not to mention those of our families, communities and cities.
95. The numbers mentioned in the third paragraph _____.
A. prove that numbers never tell the whole story
B. show that the number of solo dwellers has greatly increased
C. are to encourage young people to live alone
D. are to show that there are big differences between countries with respect to solo dwellers
96. According to the passage, what has contributed to the increase in solo dwellers? ①Improved economic conditions .②A cultural change. ③The communications revolution. ④Increasing awareness of the need for environ-mental protection.
A. ①②③ B. ②③④ C. ①③④ D. ①②④
97. What do we learn from the passage?
A. Norway has the most solo dwellers.
B. 47% of households in Sweden have more than one resident.
C. There are more men living alone in the US than women.
D. Middle-aged adults are the most likely to be living alone.
98. What is implied in the second-to-last paragraph?
A. Solo dwellers prefer greener cities.
B. Living with family should be encouraged.
C. Living alone can be environmentally-friendly.
D. Solo dwellers are happier than those living with family.
( C )
The traditional distinction between products that satisfy needs and those that satisfy wants is no longer adequate to describe classes of products. In today’s prosperous societies, the distinction has become unclear because so many wants have been turned into needs. A writer, for instance, can work with paper and pencils. These are legal needs for the task. But the work can be done more quickly and efficiently with a word processor. Thus a computer is soon viewed as a need rather than a want.
In the field of marketing, consumer goods are classed according to the way in which they are purchased. The two main classes are convenience goods and shopping goods. Two lesser types are specialty goods and unsought(主动提供的) goods. It must be emphasized that all of these types are based on the way shoppers think about products, not on the nature of the products themselves. What is regarded as a convenience item in France (wine, for example) should be a specialty goods in the United States.
People do not spend a great deal of time shopping for such convenience items as groceries, newspapers, toothpaste, aspirin, and candy. The buying of convenience goods may be done routinely, as some families buy groceries once a week. Such regularly purchased items are called staples. Sometimes convenience products are bought without enough thinking; someone has a sudden desire for an ice cream sundae(圣代) on a hot day. Or they may be purchased as emergency items.
Shopping goods are items for which customers search. They compare prices, quality, and styles, and may visit a number of stores before making a decision. Buying an automobile is often done this way.
Shopping goods fall into two classes; those that are recognized as basically the same and those that are regarded as different. Items that are looked upon as basically the same include such things as home appliances, television sets, and automobiles. Having decided on the model desired, the customer is primarily interested in getting the item at the most favorable price. Items regarded as essentially different include clothing, furniture, and dishes. Quality, style and fashion will either take precedence(优先) over price, or they will not matter at all.
99. It can be learned from the first paragraph that ______.
A. a writer needs a word processor B. needs and wants can’t be separated clearly
C. the way to distinguish the products is unimportant D. a computer is a need rather than a want
100.The example of wine is used to illustrate that ______.
A. goods are classified differently in different countries
B. the types of the product lie on the people rather than its nature
C. Frenchmen often drink but Americans sometimes do
D. one product may belong to many types
101. Staples are items that ______.
A. are convenient to purchase B. are purchased without enough thinking
C. people “want but don’t need” D. people are in constant need of
102. Shopping goods that are considered as basically the same are those that ______.
A. consumers don’t care where to buy them B. consumers spend much time searching for
C. satisfy similar needs of the consumer D. can be found in nearly every shop

Directions: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.
Have you ever had a wonderful idea and thought it would make a great invention, but didn’t know what to do next? Here is the next step to take to make your dream come true and become a famous inventor. Remember to dream big, and never count anything out.
The first thing to do is to do some research. If you find nobody else has invented it on the Internet, search through US patent (专利) information to see if a patent has ever been created for your type of invention. If not, go to the next step.
The easiest way to go is to work with a company that can help you to make your dreams a reality. It can help you present your ideas and get your product in the right hands. Look for a reputable (有声望的) company such as Lambert and Lambert in Minnesota. It offers free advice, and if it thinks your product is marketable, it will help you push it.
Call the company and make an appointment. You will be wanted to bring in a model of your invention and a complete description (描述) of it. Write down exactly what your invention entails (必需) in as much detail as possible. At the meeting you can present it, and will be told how marketable it is. If the company decides to help you, it will present it to different manufacturers and help you go to the next step.
Once your invention has been approved (认可), and the rights to it sold to a large company, get ready to gain the benefits of becoming the next great inventor. It may take a year or two, but will be worth the wait.
(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN EIGHT WORDS)
103. If you had a wonderful idea and thought it would make a great invention, first you should _______________.
104. After the presentation of your invention, the company will tell you ____________________.
105. What should you present at the meeting with the company?
