However the way up to the top was even worse—higher, steeper, more challenging. I would never make it. I heard someone sobbing and moaning; I wondered who it was and realized that it was I. The other boys must have been home. Time dragged. And with each passing minute, my legs and arms grew sore/numb. Something rolled down my cheeks. It was tears or sweat, or both. The shadows gradually lengthened, the sun disappeared from the treetops beyond the clearing below, and dusk began to gather. The ground below the cliff became dim. Can you imagine how desperate I was at that time
I didn’t know how long it had passed until a familiar voice came below. I glanced down! It was my dad with a flashlight. But what could he do It was impossible for him to climb up here and carry me down. “Come on down, my brave boy. Dinner is ready.” His comforting tone seemed to have a magic power. Somehow, following his light, I struggled to inch over one step. And then another. That’s how it went. Finally I took the last step down onto the bottom and into my father’s strong arms, sobbing a little, and then, surprisingly, feeling a sense of immense accomplishment and something like pride.

M: Hi, my name is William Jenkins. I’m a life and relationship coach and the owner of New York Dating Coach in New York City.
Now we’ll talk about making a good first impression. You only get one chance to do that. right A really great way to make a good first impression is to make eye contact and to show real interest in the person you’re meeting. It’s important to remember their names. When you first meet somebody, you should use their names during the conversation to let them know that you remember their names.
You should also allow them to have the spotlight. You can share information about yourself, but don’t control the conversation; it’s not all about you. Even if you’re the most interesting person in the world, people want to talk about themselves too. So be a great listener, ask questions and really make a point of getting to know the other person. And you know, people like to talk about themselves. So if you let them do that, then they’re going to like you.
Finally, make sure you dress nicely and have good posture. Don’t be negative and don’t complain; no one wants to hear your problems. Just be positive, be yourself and be a good listener.泸县重点中学2023-2024学年高二上学期10月月考

Haley Curfman, 25, of Blackwell, Oklahoma, is a teacher at Blackwell Public School and last year she bought a plain(朴素的) white dress, which she set up a station in her classroom for her students to decorate, encouraging them to go and draw on the dress whenever they had free time. Haley set up a station at a table with the dress and some colored markers so that her students could draw on it, having first seen the idea on Pinterest.
After the kids had finished the design, she then surprised them all by wearing the dress to class, sharing pictures of herself in it on Facebook in a post that has since been shared over 200, 000 times.
For teachers looking to do something similar for their own students, Haley said that she bought the dress off Amazon for less than $ 20 about six months ago and pre-washed the dress before she started the project. She used markers from Walmart. But she said these things can be bought in other places. She said, “To do the project, I set up a station at a table with the dress and markers. It takes anywhere from two weeks to a month to complete as we just work on it here and there when time allows. You'd better give the students enough time so they don't have to hurry.”
“Teachers have been sharing their dresses, T-shirts, etc. with me that they've been creating since the 1950s with the same idea. It is amazing, and I love the fact that you are sharing them with me! Thank you all so much for your kindness and support,” she wrote on Facebook.
Asked why she came up with the idea, Haley told Scary Mommy. “We don't have art in our school, so, I always try to do little creative projects when possible.”
24.What did Haley use the plain white dress to do
A.To teach her students painting. B.To prepare for her presentation.
C.To ask her students to draw on it. D.To help her students with their homework.
25.What do we know about the finished dress
A.It took Haley by surprise. B.It is kept by Haley at home.

A.Buy the same dress online. B.Give the kids enough time.
C.Buy the same markers in Walmart. D.Leave the finished work untouched.
27.Why did Haley carry out the project
A.To teach art to her students. B.To show her idea on Pinterest.
C.To share it with other teachers. D.To excite her students' creativity.

As my plane landed in Pamplona, Spain, I couldn’t help thinking., “I’m crazy about going abroad and taking classes in Spanish.” My biggest fear was whether I would be able to communicate with Spanish speakers, and how I would be able to adapt to a culture that is different in so many ways from American culture.
I had attended classes in Spanish and talked with native students for over a month but now it got better. When I first started, it was easy to get frustrated when I didn’t understand parts of what my professor was saying, or to feel embarrassed when I had to ask someone to repeat themselves many times. However, people often politely corrected me when I made a mistake, and also offered support and words of encouragement. Noticing my own progress through my increased ability to have a conversation has made the frustration dissolve. And it helped me reach my biggest piece of advice to anyone facing the same fear: to force yourself to speak as much as possible.
Another challenge I faced was culture shock when I arrived in Spain. As someone used to stores always being open in Seattle, I’ve had to get used to most stores being closed during afternoon hours and on Sundays. Plans are made much more slowly, and usually at the last minute, which for someone who values organization and certainty as much as I do, was difficult to get used to. The best way I found to deal with the culture shock was to change my views. I’ve grown to appreciate the Spanish attitude that there is more to life than work. Family and friends are important as well, and having so much time off allows life outside work to be enjoyed.
Living abroad is always frightening, especially when the language and culture are completely foreign. There will always be challenges, frustrations, and problems. However, learning to deal with them and appreciate the journey has been one of the most valuable things I’ve learned while abroad.
28.What can be learned about the author before she began her life in Spain
A.She was well-prepared.
B.She was concerned about her life there.
C.She really looked forward to the new culture.
D.She had worked very hard at learning Spanish.
29.What does the underlined phrase “dissolve” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Build up. B.Grow again.
C.Disappear slowly. D.Displayed clearly.
30.What did the author do to deal with the culture shock
A.She tried hard to make friends. B.She lived the way the locals did.
C.She made plans in advance carefully. D.She turned her attention to her study.
31.What does the author’s story show
A.Culture shock can be too hard to go through.
B.Living abroad isn’t as good as people think.
C.Living abroad can be challenging but it is worth doing.
D.Today’s people should learn to accept different cultures.

Almost everyone who has studied English has been warned about the way Brits love their manners. It is part of our national identity, as much as fish and chips or complaining about the weather. Recently I have been wondering where this comes from and I read online that we say sorry up to eight times a day. Probably the same amount of times that any other person says “hello” or “how are you”. It is almost like greetings to us! It was only when I was explaining how there are five steps of saying thank you when you buy something from a shop to a Mexican friend of mine that I realised how mad it sounded.
After some research online I have not been able to find any specific reasons why we are the way we are. I suppose for centuries manners and how we eat at the table and talk to other people have been the barriers between the lower and upper classes and represent your social status. Britain has traditionally been a quite conservative country. There are many articles suggesting that this seemingly polite attitude of always saying please and thank you is quite false because it is impossible to always feel that you want to thank someone or say please.
Maybe it is for this reason that people are going one of two ways: they are incredibly polite and hold back on their feelings or not polite at all, and express their true feelings. Some Brits are fed up of pretending that they are always content and having to please people. Sometimes because we feel we have to be polite, we are prevented from saying what we truly think. Do you think it is better to not hurt people’s feelings and be polite or to let people know the truth In your country what is the custom I know in some countries if someone is considered to be doing their job, the clients think that they do not need to be thanked.
32.What does the author think of the British way of saying “Thank you”
A.Normal. B.Surprising. C.Exciting. D.Pleasing.
33.What does the author want to find out
A.Why the British like to complain about the weather.
B.Why the British love their way of showing manners.
C.Why the British are fond of fish and chips so much.
D.Why the British have five steps of saying thank you.
34.What does the author think manners stand for centuries
A.Wealth and health. B.Social status. C.Politeness. D.Attitudes.
35.Why do Brits feel sometimes they have to be polite
A.They want to express their true feelings.
B.They want to let people know the truth.
C.They are kept from saying what they think.
D.They want to represent their social status.

How to Feel Connected
It's easy to feel disconnected from what is going on around you in today's fast-paced world. 36 You can get in touch and feel connected, however, by following the tips below:
Consider why you feel disconnected. Knowing what is making you feel disconnected can help you choose the best ways to address it. 37 Ask yourself these questions: Are you keeping yourself occupied with work too much Do you rely on electronic communication instead of face to face communication Do you lack friendships that are satisfying
Interact with people in person. Technology is a great way to stay in touch, but sometimes you need to spend time with other people in person. 38 You can also take steps to feel more connected by making small-talk with strangers who are sharing parts of your day.
39
Your loved ones could feel shy, so you may never know how to improve your relationship unless you ask the right questions. Asking them to open the doors can give you some insight on what you can do. Learning this information can help to strengthen your bond.
Show your commitment to them. Simply showing up and being there for your loved ones says a lot about how much you value your relationships. Putting in the time shows them that you are committed and want to stay connected. 40
Show appreciation. A simple “thank you” goes a very long way. Unfortunately, it is something that people who are close often take for granted. Telling someone you appreciate their time, love, and efforts can strengthen your bond and help you to become more connected.
A.Ask others what they need from you.
B.Sometimes you can feel isolated and distant from the ones you love.
C.Be brave to express your love.
D.Reach out to people to schedule a time to get together.
E.Attending family events, or simply visiting someone once a week can help to strengthen your relationship and keep it strong.
F.Targeting your efforts toward those issues allows you to close that distance more effectively.
G.You can have a gift delivered to friends on special occasions.

第二节(满分25分)读后续写
67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为 150 左右。
It was a hot July day in Philadelphia. The five boys I was with had been sick of playing marbles and burning holes in dry leaves. So when little Ned suggested climbing the cliff, the rest of kids all agreed excitedly, except me. I hesitated. I longed to be brave and active, like them, but I’d been a sickly child most of my eight years and I actually wasn’t as strong as the other boys.
“Come on!”Called Jerry, my best friend. “Just being sick is no reason to be a coward(胆小鬼).” “I’m coming!” I yelled, and ran along after them. Through the park and into the woods we went, finally we stood beneath the near vertical(垂直的)wall of the cliff, about 60 feet high. To me it looked like the very symbol of the Forbidden and Impossible.
One by one, the other boys climbed upward, finding handholds and toeholds on rocks. I hung back until the others were partway up; then trembling and sweating, I began to climb. A hand here, a foot there, my heart pounding in my skinny chest, I made my way up and up. At some point, I looked back and was horrified. The ground at the base of the cliff seemed very far below; one slip and I would fall. But the boys were talking loudly and happily above me. In a few minutes they started up to the top while I still struggled and crawled, far behind.
“Hey, wait,” I begged. Sadly, they ignored my request and continued their way to the top, from where they would walk home by an easier route. Before they left, they glanced down at me. “You can stay if you want to”, teased Ned. Jerry looked concerned, but he went with the others.
I looked down and was overcome by dizziness; a nameless force seemed to be dragging me to fall off. I grasped the rock as the world spun around. I could never climb back down. It was much too far to go, too dangerous.
