Dear Amy,
I couldn’t read your two e-mails until today because my computer was broken. I’m so sorry to hear about your problem, but I’m glad you’re feeling better and are recovering(康复). I’m surprised that in China someone’s liver(肝脏) matched(适合) yours! This is really a moving story—a stranger donated part of his liver to he doesn’t even know!
You’re right. We shouldn’t care too much about our weight. I’m happy you stopped taking medicine to lose weight. From your photo I can see you are now looking very well in the hospital. To keep slim(苗条) is important, especially for an actress, but nothing is more important than health. Your doctor’s advice is really very good—exercise for at least half an hour every day and eat lots of fruit and vegetables.
It’s not only in your country. It’s the same here with us Chinese—many people are always taking medicine to lose weight. That is often dangerous. But in fact, some of them are not overweight(超重) at all. I hope these people can learn something from your story. Hope you will leave hospital as soon as possible.

Tight-fitting(紧身的) trousers will also be banned and Muslim head-dressed will have to be “School blue” colour.

Almost all cultures celebrate the end of one year and the beginning of another in some way. Different cultures celebrate the beginning of a new year in different ways, and at different times on the calendar.
In Western countries, people usually celebrate New Year at midnight on December 31st-January 1st. People may go to parties, sometimes dressed in formal (正式的) clothes, and they may drink champagne (香槟) at midnight. During the first minutes of the new year, people cheer and wish each other happiness for the year ahead. But some cultures prefer to celebrate the new year by waking up early to watch the sun rise. Just as Halloween is for Americans, the Zhongyuan Festival is for Chinese. The Zhongyuan Festival, also known as Ghost Festival, falls on the 15th day of the 7th lunar month. It’s on August 30th this year.
The Zhongyuan Festival first came from Northern Wei Dynasty and a Taoist(道教的)saying. According to the saying, on the 1st day of the 7th month, the gates of hell open and hungry ghosts are free to find food or to punish (惩罚) people who did bad things according to Taoist rules.
People now spend the festival in different ways. In Henan, some people fly kites on this day and burn some paper in front of the door to remember the dead family members. In Hebei, people bring fruit, ghost money and dried meat to sweep tombs(扫墓). They also offer fruit and lamb to the grandchildren in the family. In Fujian, visitors may see some river lanterns along the river. The lanterns help to show the way to the ghosts.
People in Guangdong, however, have the festival on the 14th day of the 7th month. At night, they put the meal, ghost money and candles in front of their doors to make the ghosts happy so that ghosts wouldn’t bring bad luck to people.

Cows that are named and treated with a “more personal touch” can increase milk production by up to 500 pints a year.
The study, by the university’s School of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development, involved(包括) 516 farmers across the UK.
The study found farmers who named their cows got a 54% higher production than those that did not give their cows names. Dairy farmer Dennis Gibb said he believed treating every cow as an individual(个体) was very important.
“They aren’t just our means of making money. They’re part of the family,” he said. “We love our cows here and every one of them has a name. All of us regard them as ‘our ladies’ but we know every one of them and each one has her own personality.”
Dr Catherine Douglas said, “What our study shows is what many good, caring farmers have long since believed. Our data suggests that UK dairy farmers regard their cows as intelligent beings(智能动物). They are able to experience a range of emotions(情感的领域).”
“Placing more importance on knowing the individual animals and calling them by name can, at no extra cost to the farmer, also increase milk production.”

On March 14, math and science lovers around the world celebrated a special day: Pi Day.
Pi is equal to about 3.14, but the number goes on endlessly It is sometimes written in Greek, π. With the help of computers, mathematicians have been able to calculate (计算) pi out to over a trillion (万亿) decimal (小数的) places, but there is still no end to the number. This makes pi puzzling, even for the most famous scientists and mathematicians.
Pi Day is celebrated around the world on March 14, since how we write this date, 3/14, looks just like the number pi.
For some people, the appeal (感染力) of Pi Day goes far beyond math and science. Pi shows up throughout popular culture. You can see it in movies, comics, music and more. “In modern movies, any time the filmmaker wants to produce a sense of mystery (神秘), often the symbol pi is used”, says David Blatner, Jewish American writer of The Joy of Pi.
People also love trying to memorize the digits (数字) of pi and competing against others to see who can remember the most. Many teachers hold class contests to see how many numbers their students can memorize. The Guinness World Record for reciting the most digits of pi is held by Lü Chao of China, who successfully recited pi out to nearly 67,890 decimal places.
Above all, Pi Day is about having fun with the number, People celebrate Pi Day by eating or throwing pie and with fun pi-related games and activities.
