Watching news about the environment on TV can be sad.The problems seem so big that it's difficult to imagine how one single person can do anything about them.Rebecca Hosking, however, thought differently.
Rebecca is a wildlife camerawoman and she was filming a documentary(纪录片) for the BBC in the Pacific Ocean when she saw something that made her cry—hundreds of birds that had died because they had accidentally eaten the plastic that was thrown into the sea.Beaches on Pacific islands that should have been the most beautiful places in the world were covered with plastic toys, drinks bottles, pens—every plastic thing you can think of.
Rebecca decided she had to do something.Back at home she thought about what she could do to help solve the problem of plastic. In her hometown of Modbury, she asked local shopkeepers to stop using plastic bags in their shops.
Plastic bags are used everywhere in Britain—every supermarket, every shop. The numbers are amazing.Britain uses nearly 17 billion plastic bags each year. And the bags can take hundreds of years to break down because they are chemical rather than natural so each year the sea and the environment become more and more polluted.
To Rebecca's surprise, the shopkeepers agreed and Modbury became the first plastic bag free town in Britain.Instead, shops offered cotton bags.
Other towns followed Modbury's example and towns around Britain and around the world are becoming plastic bag free.It won't solve all of the world's environmental problems, but it shows that people are becoming active and starting to think about how the little things in their daily lives can have a big influence. It also shows us that there is something we can do and that one person can make a big change with a strong enough belief.

Boys' schools are the perfect place to teach young men to express their emotions and involve them in activities such as art, dance and music.
Far from the traditional image of a culture of aggressive masculinity(阳刚),boys could develop without pressure if there were no girls, the US study says.
Boys at single-sex schools were said to be more likely to get involved in cultural and artistic activities that helped develop their emotional expressiveness, rather than feeling they had to conform to(遵守) the“boy code”of hiding their emotions to be a “real man”.
The findings of the study go against received thought that boys do better when taught together with girls.
Tony Little, headmaster of Eton, warned that boys were being failed by the British education system because it had become too focused on girls. He criticized teachers for failing to recognize that boys are actually more emotional than girls.
The research argued that boys often perform badly in mixed schools because they become discouraged(泄气) when their female classmates do better earlier in speaking and reading skills.
But in single-sex schools teachers can teach lessons according to boys' learning styles, letting them move around the classroom and getting them to compete in teams to prevent boredom, wrote the study's author,Abigail James,of the University of Virginia.
Teachers could encourage boys to enjoy reading and writing with “boy-focused” approaches such as themes and characters that appeal to them.Because boys generally have more acute vision(灵敏的视觉),learn best through touch, and are more physically active, they need to be given lessons where they are allowed to walk around.“Boys in mixed schools view classical music as feminine(女性的),”James wrote.
“Single-sex education also made it less likely that boys would feel they had to conform to the thought that men should be ‘in charge’ in relationships. In mixed schools boys feel forced to act like men before they understand themselves well enough to know what that means,”the study reported.
41.It is commonly believed that in a mixed school boys ______.
A.are more healthy B.perform better
C.behave more responsibly D.receive a better education
42.The author believes that a single-sex school would ______.
A.help boys to realize their differences from girls
B.force boys to hide their emotions to be “real men”
C.teach boys to build up the traditional image of a man
D.encourage boys to express their emotions more freely
43.In Tony Little's opinion,the British education system______.
A.focuses more on mixed school education
B.fails to give boys the attention they need
C.places more pressure on boys than on girls
D.realizes boys are more emotional than girls
44.According to Abigail James, what is the advantage of single-sex schools?
A.Boys can learn how to achieve success through teamwork.
B.Boys can choose to learn whatever they are interested in.
C.Boys can be taught according to their learning styles.
D.Boys can understand what their responsibilities are.
45.According to the passage,we can infer that ______.
A.girls should be taught in mixed schools
B.boys should be taught in boys-only schools
C.Eton will adopt the single-sex education system
D.Eton will continue to adopt the mix-sex education system
