1. prefer (v.) preferred, preferred, preferring
(1)prefer sth.=like sth. better

I preferred to be a policeman when I was a child.

2. suppose (v.)推断,料想
(1)suppose +(that)从句 认为/猜想…… (否定句:I/We don’t suppose that…)
I suppose she will be back next year. 我想明年她会回来的。
I don't suppose/think he will go with us. 我想他不会和我们去的。
(2)be supposed to do sth.(被期望做某事/应该做某=be expected to do/should do sth.)
We are supposed to get there on time. 我们应该准时到达那里。(被要求)
3. smooth adj. 平滑的;悦耳的;平整的 (反义: tough)
smoothly adv.平滑地;顺利地 smoothness n.平滑,悦耳
Our path in life will not always be smooth. 我们人生的道路不会总是平坦的。
4. spare
(1) adj. 空闲的;不用的;备用的;多余的
in one's spare/free time 在某人的空闲时间 a spare tire 备胎 a spare seat 空座位
(2) v. 抽出,留出 spare sb. sth.=spare sth. for sb.
Could you spare some time for me I really need to talk with you.
5. case n. 情况,实情;箱,盒容器
a case of beer一箱啤酒 in the bookcase
His accidents is a case of drunk driving.这次事故是醉酒开车的一种情况。
in this/that case 既然这/那样 It is said that he is not at home. In that case, we won’t go there.
in case以防万一 In case you need any help, here's my number.
in case of 万一,如果 It would be safer to take more money with you in case of emergency.
6. along with伴随着
He sent the books along with other things. 我把一些书和其他东西一起寄走了。
单数主语,即使后面带有由with, along with, together with, like, but, except, besides, as well as, more than, no less than, rather than等引导的短语,谓语动词仍用单数。
You as well as he are to be blamed for this accident.
My friend said everyone except Tom and Jim was there then.我的朋友说那时除了汤姆和吉姆大家都在那儿。
7. stick
(1) cn. 棍,条 To fight bad people, the Monkey King uses a magic stick.
(2) v.刺入;粘贴 stick-stuck-stuck The gum stuck on my fingers.口香糖粘在我手指上了。
stick…into…把……插入/刺入…… The nurse stuck the needle into my arm.护士把针扎进我的胳膊。
stick to 坚持;固守;遵守(to是介词,+名词/代词/动名词)
When you start a job, you must stick to it. 一旦开始了一件工作, 你就得持之以恒。
The government must stick to its promises. 政府必须坚守它自己的承诺。
stick out伸出,突出 She stuck out her foot and tripped him over. 她伸出脚把他绊倒。
8.shut shut shut shutting
shut off 关闭; 停止运转 shut up 闭嘴 shut in 监禁; 围住; 关在屋里
shut down 停业,停工 shut away 把 ... 藏起来; 隔离
9. plenty of
(1)plenty of 意为“大量的,充足的”,相当于a lot of, 与可数名词连用和不可数名词连用。
I have plenty of time. 我有很多时间。
The room contained plenty of guests. 屋里有很多客人。
(2)plenty of +名词,作主语时,其谓语动词的数要与名词的数相一致。
There is plenty of work to be done. 有很多工作要做。
Plenty of students have come. 来了许多学生。
(3)in plenty 表示“大量;丰富;充裕”。
There is food and drink in plenty. 有大量的食物和饮料。
拓展a great deal of +不可数名词,表示“大量的”。They need a great deal of food. 他们需要大量的食物。
a great number of +复数名词,表示“许多的”。Chinese is spoken by a great number of people in the world.
10. sense
(1) v. 感觉到;意识到
We all seemed to sense his sadness at that time.在那个时候我们好像都感觉到了他的悲伤。
(2) n. 意识;感觉 a sense of satisfaction/humor/sadness
I have a poor sense of direction.我方向感很差。
11. praise
(1) un. 赞扬;表扬 Everyone is full of praise for the beauty of the south.人人尽说江南好。
win/earn praise for因为…而赢得赞扬 He won praises for his modesty. 他以自己的谦虚赢得别人的赞扬。
in praise of 称赞,赞扬 give praise to sb.称赞某人 receive praise from sb.得到某人的称赞
The teacher spoke in praise of those students who helped each other. 老师表扬了那些互相帮忙的学生。
(2) v. 赞扬;表扬 praise sb. for (doing) sth. 老师因为她的善良表扬了她很多次。
The teacher praised her many times for her kindness./The teacher praised her many times because of her kindness.
praise sb. as…称赞某人为… People in Rome and other parts of Italy praised him as a hero.
12. wound wounded(adj.)受伤的 the wounded=the injured伤员
(1) n.伤口;创伤 He has a wound in the arm. 他臂上有一处伤。
(2) v.使(身体)受伤;伤害 You must not wound her feelings.你不可以伤害她的感情。
wound 外界暴力或因武器等造成的伤害,刀伤、枪伤、刺伤等皮肉伤,是出血的、严重的伤。可指战场受伤,也可指精神受伤。
hurt 普通用语,既可指精神上的伤害,也可指肉体上的伤害。多指伤痛
injure 比hurt正式,指损害健康、成就、容貌等,强调功能的损失。可强调意外受伤
指肉体上的伤害时,hurt可与badly,slightly,seriously等连用;但如果指精神上的创伤,只能说very much/rather/deeply hurt。
13.区分produce和make
二者用作动词作“制造”、“生产”讲时,可互换使用。 The factory makes / produces color TV sets.
make为普通用语,意思为“做”、“建造”、“生产”,主语多为人,有时也可能是生产物品的某个地点.
She made a cake for us. 她给我们做了一个蛋糕。(主语是人)
The shop makes shoes. 这家店铺生产鞋子。(主语是某个地点)
produce为正式用语,意为“生产”、“产生”、“制造”,其主语可以是人,也可以是物或某个地点。
They produce over 250 cars a week. 他们每周生产250辆汽车。(主语是人)
The machine can produce music when you touch it. 当你触摸到这台机器时,它会放出音乐。 (主语是物)
Canada produces high-quality wheat. 加拿大生产高品质的小麦。 (主语是某个地点)
14.master
(1) cn. 大师,能手 He is a master of art.
(2) cn. 主人 The dog didn’t listen to his master.
(3) v. 掌握,精通 It’s important to master a foreign language.
15. recall (v.)回忆起,回想起,+n./v-ing/宾语从句;不可用于进行时。
He didn’t recall where he left his keys.他记不起他把钥匙放在哪儿了。
I couldn’t recall meeting her before.我想不起以前见过她。
16. total
(1) adj. 全体的,总共的 What’s the total population of China
(2) n. 总数,合计 in total=in all There are 400 people in the hall in total.
(adv.) totally (completely) What he did is totally unacceptable.他所做的一切是完全不可接受的。
17.dialog(n.)对话 指一般意义上的对话时,是不可数名词;指具体的对话或两个人之间的对话,是可数名词。
18.pity
(1) n. 同情;怜悯;(用于表示失望)遗憾,可惜 It’s a great pity that all the students can’t get the same opportunity.
take pity on对…表示同情;对…表示怜悯
