When Zhu Linyan went on stage, everybody laughed. The 14-year-old was carrying two wine barrels (酒桶)and dancing. His face was painted in different colors. He sang funny songs and spoke in a Suzhou dialect (方言).
Zhu acted in Shan Ting (《山亭》), part of a Kunqu opera (昆曲), at a student art show in Shanghai. In the play, he played a wine seller. Another character, Lu Zhishen, tried to take away his wine and drink it.
