Before the elevator was invented in the late 1800s, buildings were much smaller and less tall, as people did not want to walk up and down stairs (楼梯) all day. With the invention of the elevator came high-rise buildings and skyscrapers.
Some people find elevators make them a little uncomfortable because there are many people all standing close in a small room. It is best just to relax and enjoy the ride.
When the elevator doors open, stand aside and let everyone out before you try to get in. Even if you are in hurry, it’s impolite to push someone so that you can get into an elevator.
Don’t stare at (盯着看) people or stand too close. Try to keep your eyes looking ahead or you could make others feel nervous or uncomfortable.
If you have to move past people to get out of the lift, say “Excuse me, please” or “I’m sorry” rather than just push them out of the way. Others will appreciate it if you show some politeness.
If you are standing close to the buttons (按钮), ask others what floors they are going to and press the buttons for them. This is considered to be polite.

Last year I went to Nepal for three months to work in a hospital. I think it’s important to see as much of a country as you can, but it’s difficult to travel around Nepal. The hospital let me have a few days’ holiday, so I decided to go into the jungle and I asked a Nepalese guide, Kamal Rai, to go with me.
We started our trip at 6:00 in the morning with two elephants carrying our things. It was hot, but Kamal made me wear shoes and trousers to protect me from snakes. In the jungle there was a lot of wildlife, but we were trying to find big cats, especially tigers. We climbed onto the elephants’ backs to get better view, but it is unusual to find tigers in the afternoon because they sleep in the heat of the day.
Then we saw a tiger a little far away from us. Kamal told me to be very quiet. We crept (爬行) nearer and found a dead deer (鹿), still bleeding (流血). This was the tiger’s lunch! Suddenly I started to feel very scared.
We heard the tiger a second before we saw it again. It jumped out so quickly. I looked into its eyes and face, and saw right down the animal’s throat. It took hold of Kamal’s leg between its teeth, but I succeeded in pulling Kamal away. One of our elephants ran at the tiger and made it go back into the grass, so we quickly escaped to let the tiger eat its lunch. That night it was impossible to sleep!

Everyone knows that the twins look alike, right? Not quite. Although it may be very hard to tell identical twins apart, no two people are exactly the same—even identical twins.
Identical twins develop from the same fertilized egg (受精卵), so they share the same genes. Genes contain the information that determines people’s physical traits (特点). While most people have their own unique set of genetic instructions, identical twins are unusual because they both have the same set. But researchers have discovered that those instructions do not tell the entire story.
The environment in which each twin grows and develops also affects their physical appearance and personality. Even small differences can have big effects. Fingerprints are a good example. One might believe that identical twins have the same fingerprints. But detectives have known for many years this is not the case. Like snowflakes (雪花), no two fingerprints are alike. Unique patterns (图案) on the tips of the fingers appear as the child develops in the womb (子宫). While genetic instructions are the primary influence on fingerprint patterns, researchers have discovered other factors that also have influence. The rate of bone growth, or environmental factors such as pressure in the mother’s womb, can also affect the developing twins’ fingerprint patterns. So even though two twins grow next to each other in the womb, they experience slightly different environments. As a result, they develop slightly different fingerprints.
