Life support machines enable patients to survive for a period of time while their body is recovering from a specific illness or injury. They benefit patients who only need them for a short time, as well as people who are attempting to maintain quality of life for the long term. Life support machines are also beneficial in the event that the patient is deemed “brain dead”. In these circumstances, the organs continue to receive oxygen-rich blood flow to keep them functioning.
(1)The legal battle is whether the life support machines should be taken off a coma patient Terri Schiavo who spent 15 years in a coma-like state.
The controversies were that Terri’s parents still believed that the coma was only temporary while Terri’s husband believed that Terri would not have wanted to live on in this state. Some people claimed that life is sacred, which no one has the right to end, while many people thought it was the right thing to have Terri taken off life support machines.
(2)I believe the matter is not as simple as it seems to be. We need to consider not only the feelings of the family but also the laws before making the decision.
2.
