LONDON—Britain made meteorological (气象学的) history on Tuesday when temperatures in some places topped 40℃ for the first time ever recorded in the United Kingdom.
It was a day of hot milestones (里程碑) in Britain, where in the morning the temperature was 39.1℃, the highest level ever recorded in the United Kingdom. That record was broken about two hours later, when Britain’s national weather service said the temperature at Heathrow Airport hit 40.2℃. If confirmed, it would be the first time that the temperature in Britain had gone beyond 40℃. However, by the afternoon, the temperature hit 40.3℃. The extreme weather brought great sufferings to the local people.
The hot, dry conditions also put great burden on emergency services. Fires spread in some areas of Britain and even other European countries. In France and Spain, firefighters have been battling wildfires that have burned forest and bush and in some places, forced people to leave. On Tuesday, more than 2,000 firefighters were facing off against a big fire in the southwest Britain that has forced 37,000 people to leave their homes this week.
In Britain, the government advised people to work from home, but for schools, to stay open—a request that some areas had ignored, sending students home.
Trains are particularly affected by high heat because the infrastructure (基础建设)—rails and overhead wires—is not built to deal with extremely hot work Rail, which operates the country’s rail system, issued a “do not travel” warning for trains in some areas. Several train companies said they planned to cancel all service running north from the capital. The London Underground, most of which does not have air conditioning has also stopped some of its service.
24. What was the recent problem with the United Kingdom
A. It suffered a lot from high heat.
B. Its emergency services broke down.
C. It didn’t have experienced firefighters.
D. Its people were forced to leave their country.
25. What was the British government’s suggestion for its people
A. Don’t go travelling. B. Send students home.
C. Choose homeworking. D. Go to schools for shelter.
26. Why couldn’t trains run normally in Britain recently
A. They were out of date.
B. Some companies canceled all the train service.
C. The whole country’s railway system was in poor condition.
D. The railway infrastructure is not built to run on extremely hot days.
27. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. A Look into British Train System
B. The U.K. Reaches a Record High
C. The Hottest Weather Is the Most Harmful
D. The Battle over Hot Summer in the World

From homeless to Harvard … it’s an unlikely turn of events. Liz Murray’s life is a triumph (胜利) over misfortune, and an amazing example of the importance of Dreaming Big. Murray’s upbringing in the Bronx, as the child of addicted parents, was filled with severe challenges. There was never enough food in the house, the apartment was dirty and drugs were everywhere. By age 16, Murray’s mom had died and she was homeless — sleeping in parks, riding the subway all night, and living as a high school dropout on the streets of New York City.
Suffering this pain, Murray always imagined her life could be much better than it was. “I knew I had to change my situations for the better, and that no one could do that for me. But, I quickly found that I also could not do it alone. I had to take responsibility first, and then I had to find help — a community of caring people to help me get there.” Determined to change her life, Murray finished high school in just two years, and with the help of devoted mentors (导师) and teachers, she was awarded a full scholarship by the New York Times to Harvard University — all while camping out in New York City parks and subway stations.
Her story sounds like a Hollywood movie — and it practically is. Lifetime Television produced a movie about Murray’s life story entitled Homeless to Harvard, which was nominated (提名) for three “Emmy Awards”. Murray received the White House “Project’s Role Model Award” and Oprah Winfrey’s first-ever “Chutzpah Award”. Her memoir (回忆录), Breaking Night, landed on the New York Times bestseller list after it came out and it quickly became an international bestseller published in twelve countries, in eight languages.
28. What is the purpose of Paragraph 2
A. To show Murray’s determination.
B. To recommend a healthy lifestyle.
C. To introduce the value of education.
D. To thank a community of caring people.
29. Where did Murray get the fund for college after she finished high school
A. From her father. B. From the New York Times.
C. From devoted mentors. D. From Harvard University.
30. Which of the following became an international bestseller
A. Emmy Awards. B. Dreaming Big.
C. Breaking Night. D. Homeless to Harvard.
31. Which of the following can best suit Murray’s experience
A. Dreams are lies.
B. Too much is as bad as too little.
C. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
D. A bad beginning makes a bad ending.

A growing demand for turtles as pets in the United States, Asia, and Europe has led to a rise in poaching. Poaching means to catch or kill an animal illegally. Wildlife trade experts believe the rise in poaching is adding to the worldwide drop in rare freshwater turtles. Such concerns have led to proposals to increase protection for freshwater turtles.
More than 180 nations have gathered this week in Panama as part of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, or CITES.
Tara Easter, a doctoral student, studies the trade. She looked at turtle trade data from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. She found that the business export trade for mud turtles in the United States increased from 1,844 in 1999 to nearly 40,000 in 2017 and that the trade in musk turtles increased from 8,254 in 1999 to more than 281,000 in 2016.
The United States and several Latin American countries have suggested stopping or limiting the trade in more than 20 turtle species. In their CITES proposal, the countries included data from Mexico that found nearly 20,000 were confiscated from 2010 to 2022. To confiscate means to take something away from someone to carry out laws or rules.
The illegal trade has also led governments to suggest listing for the first time 42 turtle species under CITES, including North American musk turtles. A listing means traders will need permits to sell them internationally.
Matthew Strickler is with the U.S. Department of the Interior. He is heading the American group at the CITES meeting in Panama. He called the possible listings and increased protection for North American turtles “really, really important”.
“We’ve seen this pattern of turtles being depleted in one place, and then poachers and traders moving to another place,” Strickler said. “Southeast Asia was depleted. They moved to Africa. Now, we see them moving to the Americas.”
32. What is the real cause of the drop in the turtle population
A. Humans’ keeping them as pets. B. The pollution of freshwater.
C. Hunting them for their medical value. D. Their homes being destroyed.
33. What do we know from Tara Easter’s study
A. Turtle trade grew rapidly.
B. Turtles were well protected.
C. Turtles grow more and more popular.
D. Mud turtles were liked better than musk turtles.
34. What does listing some species under CITES mean
A. Hunting them by law.
B. Allowing selling them freely.
C. Canceling international wildlife trade.
D. Limiting the trade in them internationally.
35. What does the underlined word “depleted” in the last paragraph probably mean
A. Fed. B. Reduced. C. Joined. D. Protected.

One day my grandfather gave me a gift — a piggy bank. It had an opening through which one could put money in, but the opening was not big enough to reach in and get the money out. The only way to get at the money was to break the piggy bank open. My grandfather explained that was the whole idea; the piggy bank would help save my money so that, at the end of the year, I might have enough for that bike I dreamt about. He asked if I would put some of the money he gave me into the piggy bank. I agreed immediately and promised that I wouldn’t break it open until I could afford my dream bike.
Whenever he gave me a little bit of money, he would say, “This is for spending. But you can save some and put it in the piggy bank if you want to save it up.” When he gave me larger amounts, it was clearly for saving in the piggy bank. For some time, this worked fine. I loved shaking the piggy bank and hearing the sound of the coins. As it became heavier, I grew more excited, dreaming about buying my new bike, and all the adventures I could have on it.
Whenever I wanted to take some money from the piggy bank to buy delicious ice-creams or beautiful pens, I would imagine riding my bike on the street, and thinking of that, my thoughts about ice-creams or pens went away. So for almost six months, I only put money into the piggy bank without taking any out. I thought I wouldn’t break my piggy bank for anything. But one day something unexpected happened. I saw a piece of news on the television that a serious earthquake had happened in a nearby province. As many houses were destroyed, a lot of children became homeless. Seeing their shabby clothes and crying faces, I was sleepless that night.

第二节(共1题,满分25分)
I knew I should do something. I went to my piggy bank and was about to break it and withdraw money when my mind came back to the bike I wanted to buy, and I hesitated. Thinking of the look in the eyes of the children hoping for help in the earthquake, I grabbed the piggy bank and threw it to the ground. Suddenly, the coins rolled all over the floor. “Yes, those children need help and need the money more.” I said to myself.
My grandfather was surprised by my behavior. When he realized what had happened, he fondly touched my head and said, “Good boy, you did the right thing. Grandpa is proud of you.” He continued, “My dear grandson, you deserve that bicycle. As a bonus, let’s buy that bike together now. Then, go for a spring outing by bike.” “Thank you, Grandpa.” I was overwhelmed with happiness
