Books to Read in Your 20s
The Kite Runner
By Khaled Hosseini
As a Middle Eastern and North African Studies student, I have a great interest in books about what takes place in this area. I first read this book in high school and really enjoyed it because of its accurate language. If any of you is interested in reading this book and hasn’t yet, I highly recommend(推荐)it.
Firefly Lane
By Kristin Hannah
This is my favorite book. It is a story about friendship, love and life lessons. The story covers the lives of two best friends, Tully and Kate, from childhood to adulthood. I learned so much about friendship and life. So, read Firefly Lane! You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and then you’ll share this book with your best friend.
Half the Sky
By Nicholas Kristof
For any person of any age, Half the Sky is a must-read. It describes the struggle of women and the most pressing human rights problems of our time: the common oppression (压迫) of women and girls.
The Little Prince
By Antoine de Saint
This children’s book is simple. It might seem like a wrong book to recommend to someone in their twenties, but perhaps that’s what makes it a good choice. It sings praises to exploration and shows the importance of making friends.

“I have cancer.” Mom said and held me in a tight hug. I could feel her chest shaking as she tried not to cry but failed.
For all of my twenty-four years, my mom had been supportive. Strength and protection had always flowed from her to me. Now I knew it would have to flow the other way.
Mom didn’t stay down for long. After the shock of breast-cancer, she armed herself with a notebook and a pen and a thousand questions for the doctors. She took notes on white blood cell counts and medications with long names as though she were studying for entrance exams into medical school. “The not-knowing is the worst.” she said.
The operation was successful. The chemo (化疗) was the harder part. I went with Mom to every chemo treatment. She rarely complained, though her hair was gone and her toenails and fingernails fell out one by one. She joked that she could save money on nail polish (指甲油) and put it toward the doctor bills, even though she never wore nail polish. “Cancer can take my hair, my nails, my health, my very life. But it can’t take my smile.” Mom said.
Mom learned to share her fears with me, and it formed an even deeper connection between us. Yet I am certain there were fears she didn’t share because she was still protecting me — worries she only shared with Dad. Even in the darkest hours, she would just joke about the cancer. Mom always said, “When you look your greatest fear in the eye and laugh at it, you take away some of its power.”
Mom was one of the lucky ones. She did beat her cancer, though not without scars (伤疤). From her, I’ve learned I may not get to choose what I face, but I do get to choose how I face it.
24. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean
A. There were other ways to treat cancer. B. Knowledge of cancer would be helpful.
C. Mom had to stay stronger to beat cancer. D. I should be the one being there for Mom.
25. Which of the following words can best describe Mom
A. Humorous and generous. B. Caring and knowledgeable.
C. Positive and determined. D. Kind and successful.
26. What is the fifth paragraph mainly about
A. The jokes Mom told me. B. The fear Mom shared with me.
C. The ways Mom faced fear. D. The deep connection Mom and I formed.
27. What lesson did the author learn from Mom
A. Luck counts in beating diseases.
B. Positive attitudes get one through hardship.
C. Complaint does no good to one’s health.
D. Sharing feelings helps reduce sufferings a lot.

For 63 percent of Americans, coffee is one of their daily essentials. This number has been this high since 2017, according to the National Coffee Association. The rise of coffee is because of its numerous benefits like preventing DNA damage, but it works best if you do this simple thing first: Eat.
“Drinking coffee on an empty stomach, or early in the morning before you’ve had breakfast, can raise the level of cortisol (皮质醇) in your body. From the moment you open your eyes in the morning, your body starts releasing cortisol. It’s a hormone (激素) that’s responsible for ruling your immune response, metabolism (新陈代谢), and stress response,” says Dr. Nikola Djordjevic, MD.
“If you pump your body with caffeine (咖啡因) when your cortisol is at its peak,” Djordjevic says, “you’ll be forcing your body to bear even more stress.” In a study that evaluated preference for caffeinated drinks among medical students, it’s shown that 25 percent of students drank coffee in the morning on an empty stomach.
These students are at an increased risk of mood changes and possible long-term effects on their health, as explained in the study. “Drinking coffee on an empty stomach can greatly encourage the acid (酸) in your stomach, producing a more acidic environment,” says Dr. Jamie Long, a licensed clinical psychologist. Thus, a full stomach is important to control the amount of stomach acid produced.
Since coffee increases your stomach acid, you’re highly likely to experience heartburn and even develop stomach diseases, Djordjevic says. Clearly, drinking coffee on an empty stomach affects physical health. But it does harm to mental health, too. The overproduction of acid in the stomach can cause unusual mood change, nervousness, shaking and other withdrawal symptoms (症状). “And if you’ve already had the sign of experiencing anxiety, you’re even more possible to be attacked by the effects of coffee,” says Long.
Base line: Know your limits so you can fully experience what coffee can offer, because here’s exactly what happens to your body when you drink coffee daily.
28. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 1 refer to
A. The coffee. B. The DNA damage.
C. The stomach. D. The National Coffee Association.
29. What does the author tell us about coffee in Paragraph 2
A. It can help to reduce our stress. B. It will slow down our metabolism.
C. It might contain some kind of hormone. D. It may increase the cortisol in our bodies.
30. According to Djordjevic and Long, the over-production of stomach acid can .
A. be good for our hearts B. make us feel less hungry
C. reduce our nervousness and anxiety D. harm our physical and mental health
31. What can be the best title for this text
A. Why are there so many Americans coffee lovers?
B. What can you do to keep your stomach healthy?
C. Why shouldn’t you drink coffee on an empty stomach
D. How can you control the level of cortisol in your body

Researchers from Arizona State University (ASU) published their latest report. When men expressed their opinions with anger, people considered them more believable. But when women expressed anger, they were viewed as more emotional (情绪化) and, thus, less trustable. In other words, a man could benefit from using anger in power and persuasion. A woman, however, could be ignored or hurt by her group if she expressed anger.
The study was based on the responses of 210 students. They were shown evidence online from a murder (谋杀) trial. A man was said to have murdered his wife. The students were asked to decide if the man was guilty or not. Before making their decisions, the students discussed the case online with five jurors (陪审员). But these jurors were computers responses and comments. Some of the jurors had male identities. Others had female identities.
Some male jurors were angry about the verdict (裁决). When this happened, the students reacted by doubting their own decisions about the case. Confidence in their responses on the verdict dropped. However, when female jurors seemed angry, the students became more confident in their original verdicts.
Jessica Salerno, a psychologist and co-author of the study, said, “Our results provide something important for any woman who is trying to have an influence on a decision in her workplace and everyday life.”
In a political debate, a female candidate might have less influence if she shows anger. In the entertainment world, actor Jennifer Lawrence recently wrote that women and men in Hollywood get the opposite reactions when expressing their opinions angrily. “All I hear and see are men speaking their opinions,” she wrote. “When I give mine in the quite similar manner, you would have thought I said something annoying”.
32. What’s the new finding from the ASU report
A. Men usually do harm to angry women.
B. Women are more likely to become angry.
C. People prefer to believe the angry women.
D. Angry men appear to gain influence in a group.
33. When would the students be sure about their decisions in the study
A. Male jurors agreed with them.
B. They became angry with the jurors.
C. Angry female jurors didn’t agree with them.
D. Angry male jurors showed opposite opinions.
34. What does Jessica Salerno think the study
A. It helps women avoid losing influence.
B. It asks men to get away from angry women.
C. It causes men to change their attitude to women.
D. It shows men and women should be treated equally.
35. How does the author support Jessica Salerno
A. By showing differences. B. By giving examples.
C. By presenting research findings. D. By setting down general rules.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
Everyone, at one time or another, has experienced some challenges in friendships and relationships with family members. We might find ourselves upset or angry with other people, or even find that we argue with them. The reality is that nobody is perfect and we need to realize that we should find ways to live happier and less stressful lives. 36
Respect other people and accept them
This is the most important point. 37 Everyone is unique with different experiences and lives. By always remembering this, we will be able to develop and maintain strong relationships.
38
We might have friends who are crazy about sports, while we prefer reading. Or perhaps a parent’s hobby seems boring to us but it is something they love. If we want to keep our relationships strong and positive, we should at least take time to listen to them and talk about what matters to them. By doing this, we show them that we care about them and their interests.
Apologize when you make a mistake
This is the hardest thing for most of us to do, yet a simple “I’m sorry” can undo a lot of tension. By being honest when you make a mistake, you can fix any problem you may have caused and show that you are an adult. 39
So, try and follow the advice from now on, and you will find that you have happier and stronger relationships with your friends and loved ones. 40
A. Be interested in others’ interests.
B. Making an apology to someone shows you are frank.
C. When you are in trouble, your friends are always there to help you.
D. Respecting your friends’ parents is more important than your friends.
E. Here are some tips on how to make relationships happier and healthier.
F. And there is little doubt that you can live and work in harmony with others.
G. If we want to show someone we love them, we need to first respect who they are and show them we accept them for who they are.

Her mother shook her head. She said, "My dear, you are a lovely girl but you can't be a close friend to everybody. There just isn't enough time available for everyone, so it's only possible to have a few true friends. The others will be playmates but they won't be close friends.” Hearing this Lily realized that although she was a good classmate, she had not been a true friend to anyone. She had tried not to argue with anyone and she had tried to pay attention to everyone but now she had found out that was not enough to create true friendships.
Lily decided to change her ways and thought how she could make true friends. Just thinking about that, she realized her mother was always willing to help her. She put up with all of Lily's dislikes and problems, she always forgave her and she loved her a great deal. Lily smiled from ear to ear. She realized that she already had the best friend anyone could ever want.
